redblade |
hi |
02:13 |
redblade |
as you know since i started my new, buggy-mod-free server, i've been having lots of timing out and slowness despite the lag now being <1 |
02:13 |
redblade |
but i noticed something in the worlds directory |
02:14 |
redblade |
rollback.sqlite is 1.5 GB |
02:14 |
redblade |
i dont know if that could be involved in this mystery |
02:14 |
redblade |
but is it safe to delete rollback.sqlite? |
02:15 |
redblade |
because i never had this problem on the old server (which used mods like technic and mg, and crashes were why i got rid of it) |
02:15 |
redblade |
there were timeouts, but not for everyone |
02:15 |
redblade |
and the slowness is unexplainable, even for a fast computer like mine |
02:15 |
redblade |
very few people can use this server it seems. most time out |
02:16 |
redblade |
and every time i check it's <1 lag |
02:16 |
everamzah |
i don't have any experience using rollback, but i think that backing up the database elsewhere and removing it from your world directory should reveal your answer |
02:16 |
everamzah |
maybe |
02:16 |
redblade |
well i eventually did some worldediting to clear out trees from a slow area so i'm wondering if it's storing all that |
02:16 |
everamzah |
perhaps try running the server without rollback first, and see what changes. if nothing changes, try moving it out of the dir and check results |
02:16 |
redblade |
and if that's affecting the game |
02:18 |
redblade |
i dont understand this at all |
02:18 |
redblade |
how is it possible that a server with <1 lag, not touching server swap, -19 priority, unified_inventory_lite, is slow |
02:18 |
redblade |
and outright crashing most |
02:19 |
everamzah |
if your server is crashing then debug.txt should be interesting |
02:19 |
everamzah |
i think -19 priority is scary, but i don't unix well |
02:20 |
redblade |
it's not "crashing" |
02:20 |
redblade |
other people's clients must be crashing |
02:20 |
redblade |
because most time out |
02:20 |
redblade |
under the old server, only mobile users timed out |
02:20 |
everamzah |
well let's see |
02:20 |
redblade |
but now, a lot do |
02:20 |
everamzah |
maybe they're all mobile! hehe jk joining ur server to see |
02:20 |
everamzah |
ofc i'm not mobile |
02:20 |
redblade |
just started it |
02:20 |
redblade |
"the creative gardens" |
02:21 |
everamzah |
i can't figure out these dang digilines thingies anyway |
02:21 |
redblade |
rollback.sqlite was moved out of the directory, a new one is being created |
02:21 |
redblade |
what's digilines? |
02:21 |
everamzah |
a mod by jeija, author of mesecons |
02:21 |
redblade |
45.33.65.68:30000 |
02:21 |
redblade |
mesecons is there |
02:22 |
everamzah |
holy shit u ever run ur client in a terminal? i'm getting flooded with missing textures |
02:22 |
redblade |
the only difference between the new server and the old is the removal of technic and mg, and the introduction of coloredwood and unifiedbricks, the former of which is not in inventory |
02:22 |
redblade |
no |
02:23 |
redblade |
what do you mean a terminal? |
02:23 |
everamzah |
a terminal emulator, or some sort of console |
02:23 |
redblade |
oh |
02:23 |
everamzah |
so you can see what minetest client is printing (errors) |
02:23 |
redblade |
you mean the errors? |
02:23 |
redblade |
there are a bunch of missing trees it says |
02:23 |
redblade |
they aren't added yet i assume |
02:23 |
redblade |
mostly in tinytrees or plantlife |
02:24 |
everamzah |
it's a lot of errors |
02:24 |
everamzah |
i was trying to paste to pastebin but it's not working |
02:24 |
everamzah |
i dunno any other pastie sites |
02:25 |
everamzah |
i think the server requires a lot of memory, perhaps the mobiles can't eat it al |
02:26 |
everamzah |
i don't mean how much ram ur server uses, i mean how much memory a client has to have in order to load ur server and play on it for any amount of time |
02:26 |
everamzah |
but i could be way off |
02:28 |
everamzah |
i think it's all those missing textures are kicking off the client? hehe, prolly way off some more |

redblade: are they all GuestXXXX, PlayerXXXX, or unique common names like Bob6843 and Tom5329? |
02:41 |
redblade |
I have the no guests mod, but very few of them have the four digit endings |
02:41 |
redblade |
but yes there are a bunch timing out |
02:41 |
redblade |
does it have to be exactly 4 digits? |
02:41 |
everamzah |
i'm strictly wondering whether the four digit names are Guest, Player, or common |
02:41 |
redblade |
no not guest |
02:41 |
everamzah |
and not PlayerXXXX? |
02:42 |
redblade |
There is a Player and three PlayerXXXX's |
02:42 |
redblade |
in the players directory |
02:42 |
everamzah |
ok must be unrelated -- i've heard tell about players with common names instead of Player or Guest. |
02:42 |
everamzah |
nevermind |
02:42 |
redblade |
there are a bunch of nameXXXX |
02:42 |
redblade |
but they're not all common names |
02:43 |
everamzah |
what i meant by common was, not "Player" and not "Guest" |
02:43 |
everamzah |
but instead, unique identifiers followed by four digits... |
02:44 |
everamzah |
BTW, what are the names that are followed by four digits? |
02:45 |
everamzah |
(just out of curiousity) |
02:46 |
everamzah |
i'd fix all those load-time (client) errors before anything else, though. all those "Creating a dummy image for ..." add up |

...well, there is an .exe file at https://github.com/mireq/minetest-mapper-cpp/downloads that is a "mapper" type of program. Would that be available for use on someone else's multiplayer server? |
06:17 |
botch |
or is that just for singleplayer or admin use? |
06:17 |
est31 |
no |
06:17 |
est31 |
it was made for multiplayer servers |
06:17 |
est31 |
but only for the admins, originally |
06:18 |
est31 |
It is possible though to map a world without the admin doing anything about it |
06:19 |
botch |
For an instance like that, would that .exe file on github be necessary? |
06:19 |
est31 |
what instance |
06:20 |
botch |
Say for example, I was on the LinuxGaming's server and I wanted a big map area much like the admins have on the forum site. Not necessarilly map specific but a huge picture of the area |
06:28 |
botch |
it's really not that big a deal, more of just a question on where different areas are like the area maps on the LinuxGaming's server posts on the forum |

Hello everyone (sorry for my bad english). I write here because I have a little problem, I do not put in selected objects shortcut, whit my keymap. I think the problem is that I do not have a numeric keypad, and I tried all my keys and only the μ * sends me to the third slot. It's very annoying because I have to open inventory constantly. Do you know the way to parameterize its shortcuts as desired? |

In mesecar the behavior is like this: You press forward and the car starts moving but after a little moment it stutters and resets you back 1 node or sometimes 2 |
14:19 |
rubenwardy |
that's due to anticheat |
14:19 |
rubenwardy |
anticheat doesn't like it when you go too fast, so resets you |
14:19 |
rubenwardy |
to fix, either give yourself fast or disable_anticheat = true in minetest.conf |

ideally it should be less buggy, but leave that to the core-dev gods |

allo! |
17:48 |
sofar |
hi |
17:49 |
RobbieF |
Is anyone here able to help me figure out why Technic Quarries brings my server to its knees? |
17:50 |
sofar |
constant node and metadata updates, possibly long lua calculation loops |
17:50 |
sofar |
the usual misery of technic? |
17:50 |
sofar |
how many quarries are around? |
17:51 |
RobbieF |
Hmm, not sure, since it's a public server. |
17:51 |
RobbieF |
I found this old chat log - http://irc.minetest.ru/minetest/2015-01-19#i_4120171 - where VanessaE is discussing a similar issue with another person, but from that thread I don't think it was ever resolved. |
17:51 |
sofar |
you're the pixelshadow person right? |
17:51 |
RobbieF |
Essentially it behaves as though there's a CPU leak or something, but CPU time is actually not bad. |
17:51 |
RobbieF |
Yes, that's me. |
17:52 |
sofar |
my son loved episode 441 ;) |
17:52 |
RobbieF |
So glad to hear that, thanks! |
17:53 |
sofar |
is minetestserver pegged at 100% cpu? I know you have plenty of ram in it... |
17:53 |
RobbieF |
Server runs GREAT as long as quarries are disabled (comment out the quarries include in the init.lua for technic HV machines. |
17:53 |
RobbieF |
No that's the weird thing. Plenty of ram free, and not much CPU usage, but the world LAGGGGGS. |
17:53 |
RobbieF |
Eg., chop a block, and it reappears a few seconds later. |
17:54 |
RobbieF |
restarting the server physically makes it okay for about 4 hours. |
17:54 |
RobbieF |
then it happens again. |
17:54 |
sofar |
so I have my concerns about technic, however I do have a solution to laggyness |
17:54 |
RobbieF |
disable quarries, and the system is 100% rock solid and fast with no sign of lag. |
17:55 |
sofar |
so I've posted this PR: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/pull/3805 |
17:55 |
sofar |
the underlying goal of that PR is to expose the bad behavior in core to not process ABM's and NodeTimers for long periods |
17:56 |
sofar |
with that patch you can set abm_interval and nodetimer_interval |
17:56 |
sofar |
the default for those is 2.0 and 1.0. I would suggest setting them to 0.5 and 0.2 |
17:56 |
sofar |
and see if that improves the situation |
17:57 |
RobbieF |
heh, that's all beyond me. |
17:57 |
RobbieF |
What is it a patch of? |
17:57 |
RobbieF |
the core? |
17:57 |
sofar |
yes |
17:57 |
RobbieF |
so you patch before compile? |
17:57 |
sofar |
correct |
17:57 |
|
rubenwardy_ joined #minetest |
17:58 |
sofar |
are you running a distro-provided version at the moment? |
17:58 |

Calinou joined #minetest |
17:58 |
RobbieF |
no, no. |
17:58 |
RobbieF |
all compiled from git |
17:58 |
sofar |
excellent. do you need help applying that patch? |
17:59 |
RobbieF |
yeah I have no idea how to do that... |
17:59 |
RobbieF |
do you think it will be added to core? |
17:59 |
RobbieF |
eg., should I wait and then it'll just be there? |
17:59 |
sofar |
yes, I'm pretty sure it'll get merged |
18:00 |
sofar |
make sure to check when it lands, and you still have to change the two settings |
18:00 |
RobbieF |
how long does that usually take? |
18:00 |
sofar |
and then restart the server, obviously |
18:00 |
|
Siva joined #minetest |
18:00 |
RobbieF |
oh yes, well, I suppose I could add the conf anyways right? Then when it's merged I'll be all ready |
18:00 |
sofar |
merging? sometimes weeks, but I think this one should be merged in a few days |
18:01 |
sofar |
yes, you can apply the config settings already, of course. |
18:01 |
RobbieF |
but if it's easy enough to patch, I don't mind trying... just that the server is live and quite active... would have to plan for downtime. |
18:01 |
sofar |
so you can literally do this: cd <minetest git tree> |
18:01 |
sofar |
curl https://github.com/sofar/minetest/commit/3b078c1c59a8df401dc7004bcab5e8016f5c67ab.patch | git am |
18:02 |
RobbieF |
I used git clone |
18:02 |
RobbieF |
so you mean just cd into that cloned folder? |
18:03 |
sofar |
right, you've cloned github.com/minetest/minetest, right? |
18:03 |
RobbieF |
Yeah; git clone https://github.com/minetest/minetest.git |
18:03 |
sofar |
ok, so `cd` to the minetest folder it created |
18:04 |
sofar |
then for good measure, update it with `git pull` |
18:04 |
RobbieF |
Oh cool |
18:04 |
RobbieF |
that's something I didn't know... |
18:04 |
sofar |
git is complex, and can do a lot |
18:04 |
sofar |
after updating try the curl thing |
18:04 |
RobbieF |
k |
18:05 |
RobbieF |
need to install curl |
18:05 |
RobbieF |
done |
18:05 |
RobbieF |
failed fetch... |
18:06 |
sofar |
the curl command failed? |
18:06 |
RobbieF |
git needs more info... says needs my email address.. guess that's my github account? |
18:06 |
RobbieF |
yeah that worked |
18:06 |
RobbieF |
k, downloaded and ran git am |
18:06 |
sofar |
oh `git am` failed |
18:06 |
RobbieF |
yep |
18:06 |
RobbieF |
fixed and worked. |
18:07 |
sofar |
type `git show` |
18:07 |
RobbieF |
so now do I compile again? |
18:07 |
sofar |
it should show you the last commit |
18:07 |
RobbieF |
git show shows your patch |
18:07 |
sofar |
does it say "Allow Node..." ... OK |
18:07 |
sofar |
