I'm a noob, not sure what i did wrong or what version the server is running |
01:08 |
turd |
it's 32 bit ubuntu on a VM, updated |
01:09 |
turd |
I've installed 3 other mods, they work, so I'm doing something right. Just this one I really want. and skins after I get this figured out |

turd: are clients and server running the same minetest version? |
01:10 |
turd |
the client is 4.13 linux, Im not sure what the server is. |
01:11 |
turd |
but both are apt-get install minetest and minetestserver from ubuntu trusty i think |

maybe ubuntu server 32 bit is outdated? |

very likely |

ok thanks though, I try to figure out getting the ltest version |

Too bads turd keep popping on and off, i would have suggested he's add the getdeb repos. MT in their repos are 0.4.13 |
01:31 |
Fritigern |
Either that, or build it himself, I have a script that he could use |

01:35 |

If anyone is insterested, this script clones the GIT repos, then builds Minetest. You can optionally have it start MT after compilation. http://pastebin.com/D0d6hJU2 |

01:39 |
kaadmy |
heh |
01:40 |
kaadmy |
from laziness comes great things :p |
01:41 |
Fritigern |
The version on pastebin has been slightly modified to make it useable to others as well. After all, i already have the repos set up, and at the end i copy the new versions over to another mintest folder from where I run it, but that's really it ;-) |
01:41 |
kaadmy |
that script wouldn't work for me anyway |
01:41 |
Fritigern |
How come? |
01:41 |
kaadmy |
i have a custom script to get the libs working |
01:42 |
kaadmy |
i have most of the libs downloaded/compiled outside the root directories |
01:43 |
Fritigern |
Well, my script is (nowadays) aimed at the noobs that have never built a thing in Linux before. Looks to me like you are way beyond the target audience of the script anyway ;-) |
01:43 |
kaadmy |
and your script might have strange side effects if your computer's got 1 core ;) |
01:43 |

I atttacked him with the war hammer. I just now tried atacking it with the diamond axe but that seems to do no damage (yet?). Same result with the basic, as in no damage done |

hi |
02:23 |
thefamilygrog66 |
I've just changed the treasure chest mod so that players can examine the contents more than once (i.e. the contents for each player are persistent, for games typically). |
02:24 |
thefamilygrog66 |
lezzy: My Darkside server has a lot of custom sounds (e.g. player greetings, air raid sirens at midnight/dawn), textures that change at midnight (and back again at dawn), lots of blood for both mobs and players, and so on. |
02:25 |
lezzy |
sounds nice |
02:26 |
lezzy |
im gonna add talking to the mobs, well simple talking lol |
02:26 |
thefamilygrog66 |
random phrases? |
02:27 |
thefamilygrog66 |
I had my son record a bunch of elf-like phrases, sped them up using audacity, and then added little elf mobs around xmas time. |
02:27 |
Fritigern |
What I would like to see in MT mobs is a visual response to being hit. Like bounce back + flash red or so. Most mobs mods don;t have that |
02:28 |
thefamilygrog66 |
Fritigern: you should definitely check out the darkside then. much blood, hacking sounds, and screams during mob battles. |
02:29 |
lezzy |
mobs redo is what i use, it has bounce-back and i added the nametag color red flash on hit, i could add a whole texture red flash but its not my style lol |

want to place a node with an entity, need a way to get that entity's pos |

getpos() ? |
05:31 |

why are you following me around saying the same thing |

05:33 |

mobs are ObjectRefs |
05:35 |
sofar |
so getpos() is a valid method for that object |
05:36 |
sofar |
it returns a {x = , y =, z = } pos |
05:38 |
Skyduskguy |
so using minetes.place_node({""}) |
05:39 |
Skyduskguy |
placing getpos() errors |

minetest.place_node(pos, {name = "node:name" }) |

do you know of any? |

attempt to call global getpos a nil value |
05:51 |
everamzah |
is your syntax correct? you could paste the code online somewhere for lookin' at |
05:51 |
sofar |
you have to do foo_object.getpos() |
05:52 |
Skyduskguy |
? |
05:52 |
sofar |
you can't just call "getpos()" ... it doesn't exist in the global namespace |
05:52 |
sofar |
it's a method |
05:52 |
sofar |
a method is a function that is specific to an object |
05:52 |
sofar |
cookie_jar.give_me_a_cookie() works |
05:52 |
Skyduskguy |
so the name of the mob? |
05:52 |

05:53 |

no, getpos() has no parameters |
05:53 |

*mind blown* |
05:53 |
Skyduskguy |
so how do i get pos of mobx |
05:53 |

sofar |
Skyduskguy: you started learning 10 minutes ago. Do not expect to learn this fast unless you have significant other programming experience |

Hi, anyone knows how to destroy a stuck mesecons piston? The piston is stuck in the open position, I can destroy the piston block, but the piston itself (the thing theat pops out when activated) is still there and I can't destroy it. |
08:34 |

paolosca: i'm not familiar with mesecons but if it's your server try calinou's maptools mod -- it features an admin pickaxe that can break anything. |

Thomas-S, I'm not sure if there is WorldEdit or if I'm authorized to use it on the server, do you know where can I find a list of commands to try? |
08:40 |

you can see if WorlEdit is installed with "/mods" |
08:40 |
Thomas-S |
and you can see your privs with "/privs" |
08:40 |

doing /help should show what commands are available to you. if //set and a bunch of other //commands are not there, then either it's not installed or you lack the priv |

whats the difference between meshnodes and nodebox? |
11:22 |
Calinou |
red-001, a meshnode is a regular mesh as you'd use it in most 3D games. It can use slopes, curves… we accept those formats for meshnodes: .x, .b3d, .obj, .md2 |
11:22 |
Calinou |
a nodebox is a text definition that allows only cuboids. Those are converted by meshnodes in the engine, so technically they render the same way. |

if using .x format: enable the .x exporter in the User Preferences |
12:20 |
Calinou |
if using .obj format: you don't need to do anything, it's already enabled |
12:20 |
Calinou |
if using .b3d format: download a .b3d exporter from the Web |
12:20 |
Calinou |
.md2 format is not recommended, but you can also find exporters around |
12:21 |

.obj does not support animation, .b3d and .x do (skeletal), .md2 is 8-bit vertex animation (very inaccurate) |

For anyone who would like to see the phenomenon which I struggled to describe: http://imgur.com/1XUSK8C |
22:24 |
red-001 |
it's the fault of the torch mod |
22:24 |
red-001 |
and minetest |
22:24 |
kaadmy |
let me guess: the 3d torch mod handles placing custom? |
22:24 |
Fritigern |
And because it's saturday ;-) |
22:24 |
Fritigern |
I have no idea. I didn;t write the mod and I can;t read lua |
22:25 |
red-001 |
I can write lua |
22:25 |
red-001 |
but this is cause by minetest iirc |
22:26 |
Fritigern |
I'll test with the default torches and with different nodes (if default torch does the same) |
22:26 |
red-001 |
so fault of minetest |
22:27 |
red-001 |
the door causes the torch to think there is a node there |

Definitely the 3d_torch mod's fault |
22:28 |
red-001 |
why? |
22:28 |
Fritigern |
With default torch in han, I can open and close the door without a problem. |
22:29 |
Fritigern |
regardless of the surrounding nodes |
22:29 |

wait discribe your problem |

Scroll back a little, and you will see. I did describe it |

But to humor you, i said : I have just noticed something odd. Open door, attempt to close door with torch (3d_torch) in hand, door does not close, but torch will replace a (sandstone) node on the non-hinged side of the door post. I don;t know if it's becuase of the door, the 3d_torch mod, both, or something else. |
22:31 |
red-001 |
ohh sorry I though you meant the way the toch was placed strangly |
22:31 |
Fritigern |
I did not mention before that I had also noticed that the 3d_torch can be placed on a closed door. |
22:32 |
red-001 |
yeah the fault of the mod |
22:32 |
EvergreenTree |
Is it best practice to print a line at the end of init.lua that says the mod has loaded? (such as https://github.com/4Evergreen4/ban_hammer/blob/master/init.lua#L99) |
22:33 |
Fritigern |
I love 3d_torch, it looks great and can be place any which way. It's just that it can also be used for griefing and it kinda feels incomplete. |
22:33 |
Fritigern |
EvergreenTree: Personally, I find it reassuringto see such a message |
22:34 |
red-001 |
I find it spam |
22:35 |
Fritigern |
So opinions differ on this. I'd say go with what you like best. If in doubt, add an option to turn such a message on or off in the config |
22:35 |
red-001 |
It would be nice if there was some sort of setting to tell mods whatever t enable it or not. |
22:36 |
Fritigern |
MAny mods have a setting to have their blocks show in creative inventory or not. So why not have a "confirm_on_loaded" setting? I think that could be a way to keep everyone happy |
22:37 |
EvergreenTree |
That seems like something that might be better implemented in minetest core |
22:37 |
red-001 |
yes and no |
22:37 |
EvergreenTree |
Then add a field to mod.conf that lets the mod specify its version number |
22:37 |
Fritigern |
EvergreenTree: I'm sure. But until that time, perhaps modders should add iit to their own mods |
22:37 |
EvergreenTree |
Then mods don't have to add boilerplate code just to do that |

EvergreenTree use a mod to select singlenode, with this as init.lua: |
22:41 |
paramat |
minetest.register_on_mapgen_init(function(mgparams) |
22:41 |
paramat |
minetest.set_mapgen_params({mgname = "singlenode"}) |

end) |

Every tutorial for texturing in Blender that I have found was like "click this, push that, open so-and-so" etc. And here i am trying to follow the instructions (which seems to assume that you already know where each flipping button and setting is) and only getting more and more frustrated after having to seach for the button or setting for the previous 15 minutes. |

yes singlenode was hidden to avoid confusing newbies |
