Hey all - Trying to play minetest with my son |

OldCoder, on some servers you type /m |
00:24 |
OldCoder |
It varies yes |
00:24 |
OldCoder |
MikeFair_away, hi |
00:24 |
MikeFair_away |
Getting the error "No worldname given or no Game |
00:24 |

selected |
00:24 |
OldCoder |
MikeFair_away, you are running locally? |
00:24 |
MikeFair |
Yes |
00:24 |
MikeFair |
Windows 7 64-bit |
00:24 |
OldCoder |
Hang on, I'll restart to follow along |
00:25 |
MikeFair |
Just downloaded mintest 0.4.10-win64-msvc |
00:25 |
OldCoder |
One moment |
00:25 |
* MikeFair |
nods. |
00:25 |
OldCoder |
You clicked on the Singleplayer tab? |
00:26 |
OldCoder |
Start over and click that |
00:26 |
MikeFair |
Yes |
00:26 |
OldCoder |
Then click New |
00:26 |
MikeFair |
Then we wanted to do Creative mode and turn off damage (but that doesn't seem to matter) |
00:26 |
OldCoder |
Clicked new? |
00:26 |
MikeFair |
Yes |
00:26 |
OldCoder |
Entered a world name? And then create? |
00:27 |
MikeFair |
Yes |
00:27 |
OldCoder |
Then the world name showed up in Select World list? |
00:27 |
MikeFair |
no |
00:27 |
MikeFair |
When I click Create; we get the error |
00:27 |
OldCoder |
Go on |
00:27 |
OldCoder |
Wait |
00:27 |
MikeFair |
That's pretty much it |

Wish to try a June build of mine? For comparison purposes |
00:28 |
MikeFair |
Game says "minetest" - Minimal development test |
00:28 |
kaeza |
MikeFair, where did you install Minetest? |
00:28 |
MikeFair |
I just unzipped it in the download folder, navigated to the executable and executed it |
00:28 |
OldCoder |
Should work |
00:29 |
OldCoder |
http://minetest.org/minetest-140610b.zip |
00:29 |
OldCoder |
That's one of mine; may not work with 0.4.10 but should work locally |
00:29 |
kaeza |
ah ok |
00:29 |
OldCoder |
Let's try it for comparison purposes |
00:29 |
OldCoder |
Download the ZIP |
00:29 |
MikeFair |
Downloading now |
00:30 |
MikeFair |
It's significantly bigger... |
00:30 |
OldCoder |
It's full of mods and cached goodness |
00:30 |
MikeFair |
cool |
00:30 |
OldCoder |
I think it's 0.4.8 or .9 and may not work with outside worlds but try it locally |
00:31 |
OldCoder |
You seem technical; so the obvious sequence failed? Create is where the error occured? Interesting |
00:31 |
kaeza |
MikeFair, does it show an error message when clicking "Create" or just nothing? |
00:31 |
OldCoder |
You've got 64-bit Windows? |
00:31 |
OldCoder |
Yes, you do |
00:31 |
* OldCoder |
wonders about missing DLLs |
00:31 |
MikeFair |
Popup that says the error message from above "No World name given or Game not selected" |
00:32 |
kaeza |
did you select a game from the "games" list when creating the world? |
00:32 |
MikeFair |
Yes, I'm fairly technical (coder, network engineer, sysadmin, etc -- both linux/windows) |
00:32 |
OldCoder |
Hm |
00:32 |
MikeFair |
kaeza: No, there was nothing to select |
00:33 |
kaeza |
I see |
00:33 |
MikeFair |
kaeza: So I hit "new"; typed in a World Name; figured I could leave Seed blank and it would make one for me; then hit create |
00:33 |
OldCoder |
I'm downloading the ZIP too; seven minutes. |
00:34 |
MikeFair |
Looked for some way to select a "Game" but only see a drop down for the terrain generator (figured whatever was default was best) |
00:34 |
kaeza |
that's weird, there should be at least a "Minimal Development Test" entry in it |
00:34 |
kaeza |
(in the game list, I mean) |
00:34 |
MikeFair |
(My download says 11 minutes left |
00:35 |
MikeFair |
kaeza: Oh yes, there's an entry populated that says minetest 'Minimal Development Test' == but there's nothing to select (aka for me to do or do wrong) |
00:36 |
* OldCoder |
looks forward to the test of his |

MikeFair, ah, I deleted my config to reset settings; apparently, you must click on the "minimal" option to select it (the game does not do so automatically) |
00:38 |
MikeFair |
Oh - we did turn on Waving Water; Waving Leaves; Waving Plants - because we thought that'd be cool --- I shouldn't cause this kind of issue though |
00:39 |
MikeFair |
That was it |
00:39 |
kaeza |
did that work? |
00:39 |
MikeFair |
So did we want Minetest or "Minimal Development Test"? |
00:39 |
MikeFair |
Yes I was able to create a game |
00:40 |
bjrohan__ |
Is the Carts mod the best mod for . . . mine carts that run on rails? |

"Minetest" is the main game, "Minimal" is for development purposes |
00:40 |
kaeza |
you'd be better getting a more complete "game" though. hold on a sec |

MikeFair |
Now we happen to have an Oculus (and soon probably other smart phone based VR gear) which we used in minecraft |
00:45 |
MikeFair |
It seemed to work ok |
00:45 |
MikeFair |
Forum posts seemed to suggest that there was no point at supporting it |
00:45 |
MikeFair |

FWIW - we're putting in our vote; but obviously not demanding it; and if I can I plan on seeing if there's anything I can do about it |

I can't say for sure. the issue was (or is?) that it requires an expensive license or some such |
00:47 |
MikeFair |
Well the headgear was $500 for a DK2 - retail will be ~$300 |
00:47 |
MikeFair |
So there's a real hurdle/cost there |
00:47 |
MikeFair |
Other solutions like this one: http://mergvr.com/ |
00:47 |
MikeFair |
err mergevr.com |
00:47 |
kaeza |
also that: the fact that no dev currently has access to the hardware |
00:47 |
MikeFair |
use an android phone as the display, so the game is running on the phone |
00:48 |
MikeFair |
kaeza: That's what the forums were primarily saying |
00:48 |
MikeFair |
We'd also love to use our Game Controllers -- currently we're using some keymapping software |
00:50 |
kaeza |
you may have better answers for that on the development channel, #minetest-dev |

Bring your kid to visit SilverCrab at minetest.org port 30019 and looking forward to what? |
00:58 |

For instance, if you guys ever saw OpenCobalt or OpenWonderland (http://www.openwonderland.org) |
00:58 |
OldCoder |
Sounds interesting |
00:59 |
MikeFair |
One of things they have are portals to other worlds; the doorways in OpenCobalt were actually rendering the world/window of the remote world (aka another game on anohter server) |
00:59 |
OldCoder |
Yes |
00:59 |
OldCoder |
There is an open 2nd life |

01:01 |
OldCoder |
Might try the FOSS one. yes. |
01:01 |
OldCoder |
If you can agree |
01:01 |
OldCoder |
on the protocol |
01:01 |
MikeFair |
Kind of like a mall or apartment building |
01:01 |
OldCoder |
Yep |
01:01 |
OldCoder |
Mine seems to be working\ |
01:01 |
OldCoder |
Tell me what it does for you |
01:02 |
MikeFair |
When you give people your "address"; that permissions them to enter the door |
01:02 |
MikeFair |
OldCoder: Will do |
01:02 |
MikeFair |
So you build a portal to the nexus world; it's just a big place with lots and lots of doorways and portals |
01:03 |
MikeFair |
and people travelling to and fro |
01:03 |
MikeFair |
or hanging out waiting for people to invite them check out their latest creations |
01:03 |
MikeFair |
anyway; that's one thing |
01:04 |
MikeFair |
the other is to use a projector to make a large video wall; then kind my daughter a "wand" |
01:04 |
MikeFair |
and make it so she can "cast spells" and whatnot in the virtual world "behind the wall" |
01:05 |
OldCoder |
For a non-gamer you have thought about this |
01:05 |
MikeFair |
or through the wall as the case may be |
01:05 |
MikeFair |
Then lastly; and this one is more me; is making a progammable workflow |

Fancy seeing you here, pehjota! I didn't know you were a Minetester. |
03:13 |
pehjota |
Cylus: Hey! Yeah, I've played Minetest since the 0.3.x days, and I'm one of the admins of the LibrePlanet Gaming Collective's Minetest server. |
03:17 |
Cylus |
pehjota: And I thought I was old coming from the 0.4.3 days. Is that server on the public server list? |
03:19 |

I might pop in at some point to see what some of those things are. |
03:26 |
Cylus |
NakedFury: I'm guessing the lines are from mapgen changes. |
03:27 |
pehjota |
Those are areas players haven't yet explored (and thus which haven't yet been generated). |
03:27 |
NakedFury |
I meant places with square deserts in the middle of green areas |
03:27 |
pehjota |
That map is automatically generated with the C++ mapper, and the older Python mapper had pretty much the same output. |
03:28 |
pehjota |
Ah, yeah, I assume those are from different versions of the mapgen. |
03:28 |
Cylus |
Does anyone know if either of these mappers can handle custom games? |

I'd love to map my world, but I don't think I'll have the same node names as I'm not using minetest_game. |
03:30 |
pehjota |
Yeah, you'll just have to edit the mapper's colors.txt file. |
03:31 |
pehjota |
And I highly recommend using the C++ mapper; it's /much/ faster. |
03:31 |
Cylus |
Okay, sweet. That sounds easy. |

The C++ mapper wouldn't compile for me several months ago, but I imagine it now either compiles better or has better compilation instructions, as it seems to be the recommended version now. |

Hmm, it compiled fine for me in July 2013. |

05:02 |

Thought so. Oh well, maybe one day :-) |
05:03 |

Probably one day. The only real issue I can see in implementing it would be the redefinition of the hand's digging capabilities mid-game. The rest is totally codable in Lua today. |

06:26 |

CWz: update your plantlife modpack |
06:26 |
VanessaE |
I fixed plants_lib so that it should never lag a map again |
06:26 |
VanessaE |
(or at least, no more lag than you get from the core mapgen anyway) |
06:26 |
VanessaE |
Zeno` can confirm that :) |
06:27 |
VanessaE |
you can even turn off the "spawn only saplings" mode in moretrees - even spawning whole trees at generate time is no longer laggy, so it would seem |
06:28 |
paramat |
CWz, also, set snow mod as a dependancy of moretrees, so it generates first, that way around is faster mapgen |
06:28 |
Zeno` |
I don't think it will matter with the new plants_lib changes |
06:28 |
VanessaE |
paramat: with current plants_lib, that doesn't much matter anymore. |
06:28 |
VanessaE |
you should give it a try |
06:28 |
paramat |
and use snow mod version 0.3.1, it's much faster |
06:29 |
VanessaE |
plants_lib doesn't read mapblocks in on_generated anymore |
06:29 |
VanessaE |
it reads them during a globalstep |
06:29 |
VanessaE |
(and only if they haven't already been read) |

what does this "[colorize modifier" do? :P |
15:02 |
ElectronLibre |
Colorize? For what? |
15:02 |
rubenwardy |
It changes the color of a texture |
15:02 |
jin_xi |
to make many different colored variations of a base texture |
15:02 |
rubenwardy |
Like tints |
15:03 |
_Esteban |
so this would enable easier coloring of textures for mods that add colored versions of blocks? |

we might introduce a new variable: annoy_players. if it's set to a very low value, then it's like dreambuilder, and builders will be happy. if it's set to a high value, building tools such as the screwdriver will not last long, and players who build too much might get banned for disturbing the server by doing some building instead of the there-desired pvp... |
