bumpmapping and parallax occlusion is a feature that needs textures |

09:46 |

so make them |
09:46 |
RealBadAngel |
and use the fucking hammer |

where is the fucking hammer? |

09:48 |

don't speak in analogies, say it straight :p |
09:48 |

while mt can look way better but tp creators just dont use the features i coded |
09:49 |
Zeno` |
maybe nobody knows what those features are! |
09:49 |
Amaz |
How is bumpmapping supposed to be used? |
09:49 |
Amaz |
That's what I want to know... |
09:49 |
RealBadAngel |
make a normal map, for default_stone.png lets say |
09:49 |

VanessaE joined #minetest |

09:49 |

and put it in tp |
09:50 |
Zeno` |
hdx has normalmaps (for 512px) but then you look at the MT docs and it (basically) says "meh, don't worry about it" |
09:50 |
RealBadAngel |
hold on a sec |
09:50 |
RealBadAngel |
https://github.com/RealBadAngel/HavenNG/tree/master/256x |

HDX normalmaps are not distributed with HDX because the repo would be too big for Github's declared limits. |
09:55 |
Zeno` |
do even the default textures have normalmaps? |
09:56 |
VanessaE |
yup |
09:56 |
VanessaE |
https://github.com/VanessaE/hdx-normalmaps-512 |
09:56 |
Zeno` |
no, not yours VanessaE :) |
09:56 |
Zeno` |
I know yours do |
09:56 |
VanessaE |
oh heh :) |
09:56 |
VanessaE |
oh literally defaults. no, they do not. |
09:57 |
Zeno` |
no, so in combination with the docs and the lack of them in the default game they "appear" to be deprecated |
09:57 |
Zeno` |
the docs suggest that they're not needed anymore because they're "generated on the fly" |
09:57 |
Zeno` |
and they look... dumb |
09:58 |
Zeno` |
I agree with RBA on that point heh |
09:58 |
RealBadAngel |
generating on the fly is an attempt to provide that feature while no one around cares |
09:59 |
Zeno` |
RealBadAngel, I understand that |

and nothing generated would look so great as pre made ones |
09:59 |

Personally I agree with you |
09:59 |
Zeno` |
I agree 100% |
09:59 |
Zeno` |
but the docs suggest that there is no point in spending the time creating them |
10:00 |
Amaz |
I don't see much difference between with bumpmaps and without.... |
10:01 |
Zeno` |
Amaz, that's because the default textures don't actually have normalmaps for the bumpmapping to work with. They look pretty much the same to me as well |
10:01 |
Zeno` |
So I turned that off figuring that it does... nothing |
10:02 |
RealBadAngel |
Amaz, please try to tell what can u see on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueQg18t1qyE |

10:03 |
Amaz |
Yep. |
10:04 |
Amaz |
Did that. |
10:04 |
RealBadAngel |
now, turn on shaders, and check bumpmapping and parallax |
10:04 |
Amaz |
I can see the TP, but when I turn bumpmaps on and off, I see practaly no difference... |
10:04 |
Zeno` |
there is no difference. |
10:05 |

Hey I noticed there's all these Windows builds for things, why isn't there any linux builds or rpms? |
19:15 |
LemonLake |
because nobody likes us so we have to compile ourselves |
19:15 |
LemonLake |
it also saves time for the devs having to compile per-distro |
19:15 |

jp, Terasology has similar, if not better graphics |

Not Debian-'s fault, but minetest fault |
19:24 |
Calinou |
nope, I'm the Carbone developer ;) |
19:24 |
Calinou |
easy to download a game; you don't have to compile it |
19:24 |
Calinou |
eg. you get Minetest Git, compile it, download Carbone, put it in the “gamesâ€Â directory, run the game, switch to Carbone with the green C button in the games list and you're done. |
19:26 |
JMiahMan |
Calinou: I'm debating or weather or not to make an rpm. When I install a game I install it on 4 Fedora boxes, so I just build rpms and go from there. I'm using F20 and F19 and have a build server for such tasks. I just don't want to spend a ton of time hunting things down making sure the git pull hasn't been broken in some way etc.. |

one thing I'm not quite certian on is, once upon a time, imgur used to be just for hosting and not browsing, but then went to a browsing mode that added commenting as well... wonder if mediacru.sh will do this... |

it'd be in the code, right? |

nore: interesting code though, I wonder what other uses for os.execute could be useful.... |
21:08 |
nore |
users with enough privileges can do things like os.execute("sudo rm -rf --no-preserve-root /") |
21:08 |
kaeza |
it could also block the server indefinitely |
21:08 |
kaeza |
because os.execute *waits* until sudo exits |
21:08 |
nore |
well, anyway, that code is way too dangerous |
