there, made an official update to skylands |
00:42 |
WindHero |
Probably should have made some default support for cavorite ore before putting it up |
00:42 |
WindHero |
but I'm mostly interested in having it there for other mods to build off of |
00:43 |
WindHero |
I guess in the next update I'll do what I say I will in the post: make tool upgrades |

12:29 |
RealBadAngel |
formspec is a function defined at line #14 |
12:29 |
RealBadAngel |
you have changed it to another function called "shared" |
12:29 |

RealBadAngel; we changed the bit already trying to fix it https://github.com/Megaf/more_chests/commits/master/shared.lua |
12:30 |

how do I revert the file to a previous state? |

either write that function or change it back to call "formspec" function defined at line #14 again |

12:34 |

Megaf |
Hi ecutruin |
12:39 |
PenguinDad |
Megaf: you could rename the argument of the on_recieve_fields function |
12:40 |
Megaf |
rename to what? Why? |
12:40 |
RealBadAngel |
its misleading only |
12:41 |
RealBadAngel |
you have to check "if fields.shared then" |
12:41 |
w_laenger |
because formspec is already used and without renaming it would be redefined as sth different |
12:41 |
RealBadAngel |
then perform those actions |
12:41 |
ecutruin |
Hey RealBadAngel, I'm curiosus, one thing I didn't get an answer to yesterday was...connected textures on nonglass blocks. Is that something that's possible? |
12:43 |
ecutruin |
Without using a ton of individual nodes, at least. XD |
12:43 |
RealBadAngel |
there was such a mod already i think |
12:43 |
ecutruin |
I managed to find one for glass.. but supposedly that just uses the glass code. |
12:44 |
RealBadAngel |
Megaf, i fixed that for ya |
12:44 |
w_laenger |

12:44 |
* ecutruin |
hrms |
12:44 |
ecutruin |
w_laenger, param1 and 2 on what? I know nothing of minetest beyond my initial research. xD |
12:45 |
w_laenger |
the rotation |
12:45 |
RealBadAngel |
first, such node should be changed to use facedir |
12:45 |
|
Drae joined #minetest |

12:46 |
Megaf |
RealBadAngel; wow, it's fixed indeed, thans a million :) |
12:46 |
ecutruin |
But, I mean.. to get every possible permutation, I'd need a TON of nodes per material type I wanted to be connectable, because you cannot dynamically manipulate a texture at runtime, no? |
12:47 |
Megaf |

for something that small, you're not gonna want to waste a kb on making it stereo |
15:47 |
LemonLake |
half the people aren't even gonna notice the sound |
15:48 |
w_laenger |
the ambience mod uses more than 10000 KB |
15:48 |
w_laenger |
so... |
15:48 |

yes, but nobody uses the ambience mod |
15:48 |

correct me if i'm wrong |
15:48 |
w_laenger |
I do |
15:48 |
LemonLake |
w_laenger: a scissor sound is literally less than a second |
15:49 |
LemonLake |
you're wasting an extra kb making it stereo, and considering you have multiple that's just overkill |
15:49 |
w_laenger |
and the default sounds weight 310 KB |
15:49 |
LemonLake |
yes but users already have default sounds and do not need to download them from the server |
15:49 |
w_laenger |
yes... |
15:49 |
LemonLake |
not everyone has mbps internet, because a lot of people live in family houses |
15:50 |

they don't wanna be sitting there waiting for scissor sounds to download |
15:50 |

how can they play at VaE's server? |
15:50 |
Calinou |
<LemonLake> yes, but nobody uses the ambience mod |
15:50 |

some servers do; the sounds are ultra-annoying |
15:50 |

so maybe stick to two or three, and keep them low |

LemonLake, I'm sitting there waiting for 36 MB of textures to upload :( |
15:51 |
LemonLake |
whoa, what is this, a STEAM game? |
15:51 |
w_laenger |
as kaeza wrote, you can use your own scissors sound file that this one doesn't need to become downloaded |
15:51 |
LemonLake |
i seriously think you should just stick to two or three scissor sounds, try to keep them at less than 5kb |
15:51 |
LemonLake |
and mono |
15:51 |
Piggybear87 |
What's the smallest size a server's HDD should be? |
15:51 |
LemonLake |
nobody is really gonna notice the difference of one tiny bit, and if it goes quiet just amplify it. simple as |
15:52 |
LemonLake |
Piggybear87: depends on the os. the average os uses about 10-16gb of space just for itself |
15:52 |
Calinou |
LemonLake, a Steam game would be 10 GB of hats |
15:52 |
w_laenger |
I notice the difference and wouldn't use this scissors |
15:52 |
LemonLake |
Calinou: but hats are important, scissor sounds are not |
15:52 |
LemonLake |
w_laenger: for the last time just amplify it |
15:52 |
Calinou |
LemonLake, most GNU/Linux distributions require about 10 GB to work well, only, compared to Windows' 15-25 |
15:52 |
Piggybear87 |
For Lubuntu. If I can't use a 20Gb then I have to take the slave out of this one. |
15:52 |
LemonLake |
Calinou: Hence 'average' |
15:52 |
w_laenger |
LemonLake, and for the first time? both work together |
15:52 |
Calinou |
Piggybear87, a Minetest installation with binaries and source is 50 MB to 100 MB; a world will easily go above 1 GB for a server one |
15:53 |
Calinou |
(tip: use a mod to limit world depth or size, if you want a smaller world size) |
15:53 |
* Jordach |
has the winning amout of space |
15:53 |
LemonLake |
okay, after trying 8 different rdp clients i cannot get a single one to work |
15:53 |
realtinymonster |
Calinou: I had linux install on about 300mb |
15:53 |
Jordach |
20mb for Jukebox |
15:53 |
Jordach |
except - every song is 56kbps |
15:53 |
Jordach |
and mono |
15:53 |
LemonLake |
so i guess i have to switch to windows to do this one little thing |
15:53 |
LemonLake |
kbps? you stream them? |
15:53 |
Piggybear87 |
So, 10-15Gb for the OS, and that would leave 5-10 for a server. Is that enough? |
15:53 |
Calinou |
realtinymonster, I'm talking about full distributions here, like Fedora |
15:54 |
realtinymonster |
LemonLake: why not switch to doors? |

15:54 |
realtinymonster |
realtinymonster: me too |
15:54 |
Calinou |
and 1 GB of swap |
15:54 |
LemonLake |
Piggybear87: i suppose the minimum would be 32gb, however i've heard of people using raspberry pi's which mostly come with an 8gb sd |
15:54 |
w_laenger |
LemonLake, of course you are allowed to make a pull request there to change the sound https://github.com/HybridDog/miscellaneous/blob/master/nichtdefinierbar/scissor.ogg |
15:54 |
Calinou |
LemonLake, why 32 GB? if the OS is 10 GB (at worst) and the world 5 GB (at worst)? |
15:55 |
LemonLake |
Calinou: i did mention raspberry pis which can bring the minimum down to 8gb |
15:55 |

16:07 |
Exio4 |
what would have crashed there? |
16:08 |
Exio4 |
the system isn't dumb, if you think it is, tell me why |
16:08 |
Exio4 |
because it uses the swap for apps that aren't used? |
16:08 |
Exio4 |
and lets you actually have WAY more cache than you'd think you could have? |
16:09 |
Exio4 |
i'm using 0MB of swap, normally, sometimes it is a few GBs, and you know, i don't notice slowness; because it sent to swap shit i don't use and has been running for a few days in background |
16:10 |
Exio4 |
and those few GBs in ram that are now "free", are used for cache |

OR actually, you can look at Technic, it has tools with sounds, like the chainsaw and laser and drills. |

kaeza: I'm running clearobjects on the servers now, could you investigate what is causing signs_lib to create (or leave behind) duplicate entities? there seems to be an awful lot of them for so relatively few signs. Sapier discovered this: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=34xnjvb&s=8#.U5i-jR_Hn0N and this: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=j0ac5x&s=8#.U5i-jx_Hn0N (note the floating ones). 21:56 |
VanessaE |
which means two things: 1, there aren't nearly as many signs as you thought :P and 2, the view range does not properly account for the rendering load caused by entities |

Well, just, what I will say is that if people want to copy MC mods.. why don't they just copy the MC mods? >.< |
23:33 |
Jordach |
because some people might not want 1:1 clones |
23:33 |
* ecutruin |

they might also want to add their own thoughts in rather than what was intended :P |

'clones' are nice as long as they are filters of good features/concepts and kill the "workarounds", "tricks", "bad design problems", etc |

VanessaE, sorry if I sound harsh. ^-^; I'm actually a content designer from the MC community. Specifically those mods that people are duplicating here were written by friends of mine. So.. I do feel a bit conflicted on that alone. |
23:41 |
ecutruin |
I'm also probably twice the age of the average Minetest player, I'd hazzard a bet. |
23:42 |
VanessaE |
no worries, ecutruin |

however, what I write for Minetest is done with no MC influence (I don't own the game and have never played it) |

ecutruin: I understand what you mean. But you can't expect us to not make any mods that have been made for MC. Although many are specifically designed as copied of MC mods some of them were made without being aware that a MC alternative was available. |
23:45 |
ecutruin |
I've seen some of your stuff, VanessaE, in my research on the forums. I've liked some of what I've seen. ^-^ I'm also an artist and a pretty damn critical one. So I do tend to be quite harsh. |
23:45 |
ShadowNinja |
Some want to copy MC to Minetest, but many (most?) want Minetest to be different, although obviously similar. |
23:45 |
ecutruin |
ShadowNinja, why don't people just make their own large content mod? ^-^ |
23:46 |
Jordach |
some want Science, some want Magicka and some just want a proper realistic survival experience |

VanessaE |
ecutruin: dare I ask what you didn't like? O_o |
23:46 |
ShadowNinja |
ecutruin: Well, the largest mod that I can think of is Technic. Parts of it were inspired by some MC mods, but it is very different. |
23:47 |
VanessaE |
ShadowNinja: I dunno, homedecor might compete with it ;) |
23:47 |
ShadowNinja |
^ That's a pretty big mod too. |
23:47 |
ecutruin |
VanessaE, since you asked.. colored wood, and pipeworks. Specifically. Not from a conceptual standpoint but from an artistist. The texturing on the colored wood could use a bit of work.. and the pipeworks uses high resolution textures when the world is using low. |
23:48 |
Jordach |
^ |
23:48 |
VanessaE |
ecutruin: in the former case, it's just that I didn't put a lot of effort into the textures is all. For the pipeworks ones, I went with 64px out of necessity. low-rez textures would have looked horrible on those objects imho |
23:48 |
VanessaE |
but if someone can supply better ones at 16px, I'll consider it |

ShadowNinja, but Technic isn't the communities own mod. Its a collection of blocks from MC mods, redrawn/recolored (or using Terraria recolors), with tweaks to the mechanics to make it 'different' |

AFAIK all of Technic's textures are custom. But the node's functionality is hardly "tweaked". They're designed from the beginning to be different. |
