Actually, does anyone know if the property to change bounding box on Lua entities works on players too? I see no reason why it shouldn't, although I haven't tried it myself |

couldn't keep it, heaven knows i tried... don't let them in, don't let them see |

yes |
00:07 |
Exio4 |
it is probably the only integrated from intel that needs a closed blob |
00:07 |
Taoki |
Ok. Then there are indeed no hopes of finding a good driver sadly. Intel cards are pretty much not made for 3D stuff or modern graphics |
00:07 |
Taoki |
Minetest should however still run even on that. Probably without shaders though |
00:07 |
Exio4 |
Taoki: this GPU is actually nice at hardware |
00:07 |

Nvidia or ATI are the only ones that can safely do modern graphics. Personally I prefer ATI... especially as a Linux user funny enough |

Just saying my experience with intel video cards was bad. It was however very limited and a while ago. No idea how good they should be now, although most people still complain Intel doesn't run games well |
01:23 |

The driver is usually common. Not doubting the card can have good capabilities, but if any intel driver is bad that can matter less |

These days, software developers assume the end user has every library inthe world installed. |
07:03 |

You end up with a huge zoo installed in your system: amake, gmake, cmake, autoconf, scons, etc. |

Yeah, but _some_ programs require other kinds. |

That's why building packages in a jail is preferred by some. |

kaeza: I would like to talk about your IRC mod. |
09:33 |
reactor |
I have a couple suggestions. |
09:34 |
kaeza |
reactor, like? |
09:34 |
reactor |
1. It includes luasocket, which, on many systems, already comes as a package. |
09:34 |
reactor |
Why not ask user to install the package instead? |
09:34 |
sfan5 |
what about windows? |
09:35 |
reactor |
ask the user to compile it. They must be already proficient enough in order to install MinGW. |
09:36 |
reactor |
...if the need for "Windows ease" is so bad, why not make it optional? |
09:37 |
reactor |
Which leads us to 2. Why use scons for such a simple thing? |
09:37 |
reactor |
As far as I see it, a simple Makefile is sufficient. |
09:37 |
kaeza |
reactor, if you don't like it, just remove luasocket.so and it will (theoretically) use the system one |
09:37 |
kaeza |
(+associated files) |
09:37 |
reactor |
I had to roll a workaround to not use the scons+build-everything-in-place way. |
09:38 |
reactor |
The last, but not the least, 3. LuaIRC is not mentioned anywhere in the documentation. |
09:38 |
reactor |
Neither is it pulled in; I had to search for it manually. |
09:38 |
kaeza |
for 2) ask ShadowNinja :) |
09:38 |
reactor |
Huh? |
09:39 |
reactor |
...as far as I see so far, there is the "correct" way, and the "Windows" way. |
09:39 |
reactor |
Which should be supported separately, because if you mix them, it becomes a mess. |
09:40 |
kaeza |
feel free to submit a patch |
09:40 |

hi |

Taoki |
Um... does max_HP not work on players? How do I limit the number of HP a player can have |
19:04 |
Krock |
player:set_hp(20) |
19:05 |
Taoki |
Krock: That is max hp? Can consuming apples for example still allow more than that? |
19:05 |
Krock |
Taoki, more than 20 will make no difference |
19:06 |
Taoki |
I want some players to have less |
19:06 |
Krock |
then 10 |
19:06 |
Krock |

19:06 |
Taoki |
ok. So setting it to 10 for instance means apples can't give up to do and so |
19:06 |
Taoki |
thanks |
19:09 |
Taoki |
Krock: When I respawn, I still get 20 HP, even if prior to that I did set_hp(10). I assume consuming food doesn't have that problem? |
19:10 |
Krock |
Taoki, you want max. 10HP at all? |
19:10 |
Taoki |
Krock: Yes. I want an individual player's HP to never go above that |
19:11 |
Krock |
on globalstep -> if player:get_hp() > 10 then player:set_hp(10) end |

But yeah. The idea is, there will no longer be "players and mobs", or "friendly or hostile mobs toward players". You simply define species with various properties. Those species are played as either mobs or players. There will be alliances between them two, and each player can choose any it wants. |
20:31 |

Awesome! I can't wait... |

Taoki, as for the purple fog, did you use C++, or is there a way to change fog colour in Lua? |

I tried to make ghosts invincible. But that was hard... both because making individual players invincible isn't working well with the current lua api, and ghosts can still do damage with hand |

21:12 |
asie |
as it seems to be lacking a good one |
21:12 |
asie |
and unlike the minecraft community, most people here seem to be actually competent |
21:13 |
Calinou |
heh |
21:14 |
Amaz_ |
Thanks. That seems a nice compliment. (Although, if you saw some of the mistakes I've made today, you might take it back!) |
21:14 |
Calinou |
I stopped playing Minecraft in January |
21:14 |
lordcirth |
asie, take a look at https://github.com/lordcirth/minetest-digipad |
21:14 |
Calinou |
Mesecons microcontrollers might be a start? |
21:14 |
Calinou |
or is this totally different? |
21:14 |
Calinou |
(and luacontrollers) |
21:14 |
asie |
Calinou: I will be reimplementing my own redstone system, likely |
21:14 |
asie |
Wirium from a sandbox game i made 3-4 years ago |
21:14 |
asie |
but I will try to keep mesecons compat |
21:14 |
lordcirth |
asie, and the Luacontroller |
21:15 |
lordcirth |
asie, why reimplement? if you need a new feature, talk with Jeija |
21:15 |
Calinou |
^ |
21:15 |
asie |
lordcirth: different design mechanic? |
21:15 |
Calinou |
Mesecons is nice ;) but can be slow |
21:15 |
asie |
i don't exactly want a redstone clone |
21:15 |
asie |
i want to fiddle with some new concepts |
21:16 |
zsoltisawesome_ |
Calinou: does it use ABM |
21:16 |
lordcirth |
asie, don't see how your wires could be that much different than other wires |
21:16 |
lordcirth |
zsoltisawesome, not for wire traveling, no |
21:16 |
zsoltisawesome_ |
what then |
21:16 |
asie |
lordcirth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9b46iAKrL8 |
21:16 |
asie |
sure they can |
21:16 |
Calinou |
many more things, it's a very complex mods |
21:16 |
asie |
(this ran in multiplayer too, but at a slower speed) |
21:16 |
Calinou |
probably dozens of thousands of lines of code? |
21:16 |
Calinou |
night |
21:17 |
asie |
lordcirth: if you look closely, this is very different from how redstone functions |
21:18 |
lordcirth |
zsoltisawesome, when a block wants to power a wire, it executes that wire's function, which looks for others and trips them, etc |
21:18 |
zsoltisawesome_ |
that seems uneffecient |
21:18 |
zsoltisawesome_ |
imo ABM would work faster |
21:18 |
lordcirth |
zsoltisawesome, no, ABM's can't run more than once a second |
21:18 |
zsoltisawesome_ |
\better |
21:19 |
asie |
anyway, AFK |
21:19 |
lordcirth |
zsoltisawesome, it would take 1 second per block to propagate a signal. this method isn't too bad. |
21:19 |
lordcirth |
zsoltisawesome, now perhaps you could change it to recheck it's connections once a second or two, and store, then when tripped it wouldn't have to look |
21:20 |
zsoltisawesome_ |
the only annoying thing about Mesecons is those microcontrollers |
21:21 |
lordcirth |
zsoltisawesome, you mean the luacontrollers, or the old microcontroller? |
21:22 |
zsoltisawesome_ |
old microcontroller |
21:22 |
zsoltisawesome_ |
it is a pain in the ass |
21:24 |

i wonder why those in particular were mentioned |

Amaz_ |
All of those do not need to be installed, and are just optional. |
21:31 |
Amaz_ |
Installed isn't the right word... Minetest doesn't need those to function would be better. |
21:32 |
asie |
Amaz_: Can mods interface with them? |
21:32 |
asie |
Especially LuaJIT makes me curious |
21:32 |
lordcirth |
zsoltisawesome, well, that's why he made the luacontroller |
21:33 |
lordcirth |
asie, LuaJIT is an optional, replacement lua Just-In-Time compiler that makes lua run faster. |
21:33 |
asie |
i know what LuaJIT is |
21:33 |
asie |
but I am talking from the perspective of the mod developer |
21:33 |
asie |
LuaJIT includes a really good API for interfacing with C libraries should that need ever come |
21:33 |
Amaz_ |
asie, I'm no expert, but LuaJIT makes mods function faster, LevelDB and hiredis are alternative backends for storing the map. |
21:34 |
asie |
that's the /other/ benefit for LuaJIT |
21:34 |

it lets you talk to C libraries very easily |
21:34 |
asie |
if you're a mod |
21:34 |
Amaz_ |
I don't know if that works in minetest... I haven't seen any mods utilising it... |
21:34 |
lordcirth |
asie, maybe, but for most purposes the mod dev doesn't need to know whether it's luaJIT or not |
21:35 |
asie |
indeed |
21:35 |
PilzAdam |
asie, you shouldn't rely on LuaJIT being available |
21:35 |
asie |
PilzAdam: I know, I know; it's just brainstorming |
21:35 |
PilzAdam |
you can use C libraries in pure Lua too, see the irc mod |
21:39 |
asie |
right |
21:40 |

i'm trying to discern exactly what i can and can't do with minetest |

~tell asie There is no "block logging" mod because that is a built-in feature. It's called rollback and records inventory actions too. Also, we call 1x1 cubes "nodes" in Minetest. "Blocks" are 16x16 sections, "chunks" are 80x80 sections, and "sectors" (not really used anymore) are 65000x16x65000 sections. |

Never heard of "sectors" before. |
22:09 |
ShadowNinja |
Enke: Minetest used to store the map in multiple files that would each store a sector. MineCraft still uses this fragmented aproach. |
22:09 |
Enke |
Sounds slow-ish... |
22:09 |
ShadowNinja |
Nowadays sectors arent used much. |
22:10 |
ShadowNinja |
MC stores 4 sectors per file in in's Anvil format. It's sectors are much smaller though. |
22:10 |
ShadowNinja |
it's* |
22:10 |
Enke |
Huh. |
22:11 |
ShadowNinja |
They call them chunks though, I think. |
22:11 |
ShadowNinja |
They're divided in half and then into 16x16x16 sections. |
22:11 |
Enke |
I remember hearing something about MC's chunks, but I never did any real research into it. |

Is it possible for a mod to disable a file in minetest_game? Something opposite to do_file... like undo_file or something |

I think making a custom game is the easiest way |

Taoki, do_file just runs the lua script, you can't "unrun" a script. but you could override what it does. |
22:35 |
Taoki |
Problem is player.lua will interfere with my new creatures mod. So it would have been nice if the mod was able to disable it |
22:35 |
Taoki |
Typically the animations will |
22:35 |
Taoki |
set_animation stuff |

hi there |

Taoki: You can only override what it does. Eg, set the animations back to what you want. |
23:01 |
ShadowNinja |
Hello floriel. |
23:02 |
Taoki |
ShadowNinja: player.lua in minetest_game sends a set_animation whenever a new set of keys is pressed. Likely conflicts with any other mod that does that |
23:02 |
Taoki |
Should have been a way to disable it really. I might suggest that |

floriel |
I'm searching the dev-wiki for a way to get all items of a group (e.g. group:wood) but can't find how to do it |
23:03 |
floriel |
does anybody know how to do it? |
23:03 |
ShadowNinja |
floriel: See how unified_inventory does it. You have to inerate through all items and check their groups. |
