ShadowNinja your tip was exactly what I was looking for, thanks |
00:18 |
floriel |
now I'm stuck with another problem: I try to figure out how much pieces of an item are contained in the players inventory |
00:19 |
floriel |
contains_item("listname", stack) only tells me if a stack of the given size is contained, but I need the total amount |
00:20 |
floriel |
has anybody an idea? |

floriel: Iterating through the inventory again. Use get_name() and get_count(). |
00:25 |
floriel |
hm, seems like the API could use some additional methods ;-) |
00:26 |
ShadowNinja |
Getting the count throughout the whole inventory isn't a very common operation, and it can be done without a C++ method. But feel free to add one. |
00:32 |
floriel |
the methods of the InvRef object are part of the c/c++ core and not lua, right? |

PilzAdam |
of course not |
13:00 |
PilzAdam |
formspecs were designed for simple list based inventories |
13:00 |
PilzAdam |
and they work perfectly fine for that |
13:01 |
PilzAdam |
this whole formspec Lua menu crap just abused the shit out of it |
13:01 |
crazyR__ |
but mod developers want more than that and are trying to make use of what they have.. so doesnt that say it needs a change? |

so is there anything being done? |

[14:58:58] <sfan5> I'm looking forward to 0.5.0 so I can completly break formspecs and make them better |
13:03 |

yeah but how far away is that? |
13:03 |
sfan5 |
very far |
13:04 |
crazyR__ |
my point exactly |
13:04 |
sfan5 |
we basically can't really improve formspecs without breaking mod support |
13:04 |
sfan5 |
stuff is supposed to break in 0.5.0 anyway so we can do that there |
13:04 |
crazyR__ |
have legacy? |
13:04 |
sfan5 |
lolno |
13:04 |
PilzAdam |
also a client side API would help in designing the GUI |
13:04 |
sfan5 |
I'm not writing a parser for that shitty formspec string |
13:05 |
sfan5 |
+(in Lua) |
13:05 |
crazyR__ |
to be fair sfan, all it would need to do is check if its a string or (new format). if its a string, then continue with the old way. if its the new format do the new stuff |
13:06 |
sfan5 |
yeah sure |
13:06 |
sfan5 |
we add a new way and keep the old one |
13:06 |
PilzAdam |
we plan for 0.5 to remove all this old legacy code |
13:06 |
sfan5 |
nobody will use the new one because the old one still works |

13:08 |

we would end up with 2x the code we have now |

that is not a "litte bit" |

im no expert but ive just searched the github repo for the word "formspec" and got 34 results. does that sound about right? |
13:28 |
crazyR__ |
also is this all the all functions in formspec: http://dev.minetest.net/formspec or are there some unlisted ones? |
13:28 |
sfan5 |
34 results does not indicate how much code is there |
13:29 |
Sokomine |
i'm using the formspecs to a great extend in my traders mod. it was a pain to use...but rewriting it to a new system probably wouldn't be much fun either.... |
13:29 |
sfan5 |
> it was a pain to use |
13:29 |
sfan5 |
yes, ack, ack! |
13:29 |
crazyR__ |
i will happily spend a few nights regexing them, for you to use to remake what you see as an ideal formspec. that way there wouldnt be twice the code? |
13:30 |
Sokomine |
the main problems i have with formspecs are: a) messages/labels that are longer than a few short words break at unexpected/unpredictable points. very bad for when you need a longer description for something |
13:30 |
Sokomine |
b) arrangement of formspec elements. it takes some trial and error to get them to fitting positions, and with diffrent font size, things might be diffrent again |

13:32 |
Exio4 |
the few times i looked at the code, i basically had nightmares or something similar! :D |
13:33 |
Sokomine |
the next thing i'm planning on the mod side is some basic quest/rpg mob. basicly right-click the mob, get a formspec with a question and either predifined replies or a text input field. i'm afraid that'll all have to be textareas |
13:39 |
PenguinDad |
I have really no idea why everyone hates this minetest.get_player_sysinfo() thing |
13:39 |
crazyR__ |
Exio4: I agree, the problem sfan he siad above is that he wasnt prepared to writea parser to convert the strings to what ever format he want to use. from my understanding, thats what is holdinghim back from doing the improvements he wishes todo in the next release. so my offer above is to write a parser for each of the formspec strings. allowing him to make it better |

basically, init/halt procedures, then add_definition_to_global_space, then add_definition_to_some_object/table/whatever, then runfile |

Sokomine, there's an isometric mapper, not sure if it still works well, not sure if it's fast |
18:51 |
Sokomine |
we only have those two extremes...exact, pixel-sized mappers, and very small-scale ones for individual houses. nothing which is useful as a real map |
18:52 |

Would be cool if it could use the actual textures |

Calinou: well doing 16 pixels/node wouldn't be too hard I suppose, but it would result in bloody HUGE images and it would mean pulling in all of the actual texture files that go along with the nodes being read in |
19:05 |

I expect you'd have to borrow some of the server's functions e.g. interpreting Lua to get node defs -> textures |

VanessaE, that 16 pixels/node mode would be for small areas |

make sure you use as short of wire lengths as possible and as few thigns that change as possible (things that change appearance, including wires, when they turn on/off will cause mesh generation lag in the client, which causes lower fps). make sure you run LuaJIT on the server |

do you have a link? |

21:41 |
dynamodan_ |
the signs_lib won't override the default built in signs |
21:41 |
PilzAdam |
ah, yes, thats a fork of my fork of the signs mod |
21:41 |
dynamodan_ |
oh! |

minetest_game |
21:42 |
PilzAdam |
any other mods? |
21:42 |
dynamodan_ |
yeah quite a few, homedecor, which requires signs_lib, I assume the one that VanessaE made, |
21:42 |
dynamodan_ |
dunno |
21:43 |
dynamodan_ |
technic, worldedit, mesecons, a huge list of mods actually |
21:43 |
dynamodan_ |
I could strip them all out and try with just homedecor and signs_lib |
21:43 |
PilzAdam |
looking at the code I don't see why it wouldn't override signs |
21:44 |
PilzAdam |
can you search if any other mod overrides default:sign_wall too? |
21:44 |
dynamodan_ |
there are other servers I've encountered that have the same bug |
21:44 |
dynamodan_ |
bremaweb LandRush, it has signs_lib but they're still the flat native signs |
21:45 |
PilzAdam |
VanessaE, https://github.com/VanessaE/homedecor_modpack/blob/master/signs_lib/init.lua#L169 <- "warning" is not a valid stream |

hah it must be another mod, because I removed all the other mods |
21:49 |
dynamodan_ |
it works now, so I guess it's down to re-enabling them one by one, see which one is the culprit |
21:49 |
PilzAdam |
or you just grep for :default:sign_wall |
21:49 |
dynamodan_ |
yeah been doing that a lot |
21:51 |
dynamodan_ |
hah it's in the landrush mod |
21:51 |
dynamodan_ |
probably part of the permission thing |

21:53 |

21:53 |
dynamodan_ |
signs_lib is an awesome mod made by PilzAdam, then furthehr modded by VanessaE |
21:53 |
PilzAdam |
VanessaE, you should add a note in homedecor that it's incompatible with the landrush mod |
21:53 |
dynamodan_ |
asie scroll up a little ;) |
