Hello I have downloaded and built 0.4.7 on my Debian 7 desktop machine. I want to run the minetest-server on my newly built mini-itx headless server. Im not sure how to run the program as a damon I guess you would call it, where it runs in the background all the time like ftp, ssh, samba does on the same server. I asked in the debian channel but one of the mods is a troll and sent me here. |

you'd have to make the service file or whatever yourself, i think |
00:02 |
Menche |
i have cron run the minetestserver command |
00:04 |
LinuxGuy2020 |
If minetest-server isnt started as a service then it will tie up the terminal until its stopped wont it? |
00:05 |
Menche |
unless you use cron, nohup, or a multiplexer, yes |
00:05 |
LinuxGuy2020 |
ok Ill do some more reading on those. Thank you. |

i have cron call a script every minute that starts mintestserver if it isn't already running |

Ok cool so "nohup minetest-server" added to the /etc/rc.local seems like it may be the easiest way for me to run the minetest-server as a background process every time the server is started up (if it ever gets shutdown or power outage). This brings up another question. If I have the minetest-server running and people on the local lan are playing, power goes out or whatever that causes the system to have to be restarted, is there any c |
00:16 |
Exio4 |
what |
00:16 |
Menche |
if the server suddenly shuts down, and players on will get the message SERVER SHUTTING DOWN |
00:16 |
Exio4 |
they won't if the server crashes |
00:17 |

(the most likely reason of why they get disconnected) |

Ok here is an odd question I successfully have a minetest server running using "nohup /path/minetestsever". It starts as root though. Is this the way it should be ran or should a make it run as a normal user? |
01:04 |

LinuxGuy2020: It should definitely NOT run as root. |

Minimum FPS = 60 wanted_fps = 100 fps_max = 500 |

i don't see any reason to move the cap above 60, as my monitor only refreshes that fast |

seems so |

how do i get the chords |

and is there a fix for the directx9 thing i dont like my gl card much |

what is the tmi mod? |
07:00 |
Mr_Round |
like has a searchbar for items/blocks |
07:00 |
Mr_Round |
it also give you the block id and what not |
07:01 |

has a all the blocks like minetest does but in a larger string to soo more blocks |

searching in the world or the inventory? |

well its mostly a Op tool for building in creative |

it takes a considerate amount of time to load the world...of a server |
15:38 |
Sokomine |
based on the amount of data i get, it can't be slow network connection |
15:38 |
Calinou |
yyamiyyugi: you can, as far as I know |
15:38 |
Calinou |
see lua_api.txt |
15:38 |
Calinou |
Sokomine: you mean, to connect to a server? |
15:39 |
Calinou |
by default, mods are downloaded directly from server, not from web |
15:39 |
yyamiyyugi |
I mean like, the player presses somthing they hear a sound |
15:39 |
IceCraft |
Hello |
15:39 |
Sokomine |
no, to get the map data from a server |
15:39 |
Sokomine |
i'm trying to save as much of redcrabs server as i can |
15:40 |
yyamiyyugi |
is there a way to do that client side, like say I pressed a gui thing, would i beable to get a sound from the players client instead of the server (so they would be able to use it on any server or add their own sounds) |
15:41 |
sapier |
mods aren't downloaded at all |
15:41 |
sapier |
only textures and models are downloaded, no difference if their origin is a mod or core |
15:43 |
Sokomine |
for example, it takes very long to be able to see the eiffel tower on redcrabs server in full - let alone the landscape |
15:47 |
Sokomine |
right now, it seems i do not have to fear running out of disc space soon..... |
15:47 |

there is no known way to contact redcrab, the server owner. we do not know if the server will continue to exist for more than a week |
15:51 |
sapier |
oh |
15:51 |
Sokomine |
yes. and i'm amazed as to how few data that actually is. it takes a long time for the world to built (has been like this before). perhaps the server sends it slowly |
15:52 |
sfan5 |
Sokomine: redcrabs map can't be bigger thab 4gb if he uses sqlite |
15:52 |
Sokomine |
the 4gb limit was reached some time ag |
15:52 |
sapier |
hmmm 1 week is a little bit to short to create a client that uses multiple users for simultanous download |
15:53 |
andersje |
have you guys tried to contact the owner of the IP of redcrab's server? |
15:53 |
andersje |
you could do a whois on that, and get the owner of the netblock. since someone is paying for the IP, that registered owner should be able to get hold of the guy paying the bills |
15:54 |
sfan5 |
whois says "No match for "REDCRAB.SURET.NET"." |
15:54 |
andersje |
alternately, if redcrab stopped paying, he may be willing to let someone else take over the bill |
15:54 |

15:55 |

suret.net is a french domain name, registered to emmanuel devaux, each.devauxgmail.com -- could that be redcrab? |
15:56 |
Sokomine |
redcrab has been absent for longer periods of time before. the reason cactus suspects that he either has to return or the server will be lost is that it has to be paid again in a week |
15:56 |
Sokomine |
we did send multiple mails and pns. some seem to have been read (according to the forum), but no reply |
15:56 |
andersje |
this appears to be redcrab's twitter page: https://twitter.com/redcraby |
15:56 |
Sokomine |
even if redcrab returns, having a copy of the map would be good |
15:56 |
Sokomine |
are you sure that's "our" redcrab? |
15:57 |
andersje |
well, it would make sense...because suret.net is registered by mr. devaux...and this redcrab and mr.devaux were tweeting back and forth |

rnl: if you connect to a server, the cache file (where pictures, meshes and sounds are stored) may take up several mb (up to 30 have been counted). transmitting that over mt takes a lot of time. for nfs, it ought to be no real challange.... |

ahh, looks kinda like the one that Pyramid Head carries around in Silent HIll 2 |
21:31 |
Exio4 |
yes, but it only appears to the caves on "math" |
21:31 |
Exio4 |
not everywhere |
21:32 |
Exio4 |
actually, nevermind |
21:32 |
Peacock |
i still get intense shadows and bright spots on my large blueprint spawns, the only solution anyone can propose is using voxmynipples to fix the lighting :P |
21:32 |
proller |
Exio4, its ok for ~flat magpgen, but not ok with 3d. you can fidd absolute darkness in floatlands when falling |
21:32 |
proller |
Exio4, you can disable caves |

yeah |

I'm mostly a lurker in the forums, but I've been working on some mods for a server of mine recently |
21:43 |
PilzAdam |
Exio4, is it faster than mapgen? |
21:44 |
PilzAdam |
AFAIK mapgen is faster than sqlite |
21:44 |
NekoGloop |
inb4 "except with glooptest" |
21:44 |
Exio4 |
PilzAdam: at least here it looks like so |
21:44 |
Peacock |
leveldb, so fast you can't fap while the world loads |
21:45 |
Exio4 |
well, with math mapgen that is |
21:45 |
Exio4 |
gonna try with v6 |
21:47 |
Exio4 |
well |
21:47 |
Exio4 |
v6 is too fast here |
21:47 |
Exio4 |
damn you hmmmm, you shouldn't make the mapgen this fast! |
21:48 |
Exio4 |
since some change he did to the mapgen i was able to go with "max speed" without waiting for mapblocks to generate with v6 |
21:52 |
proller |
Exio4, try https://github.com/minetest/minetest/pull/897 or proller:next branch |
21:53 |

i noticed lighting isn't fucked up with mapgen, just when you use an awful lot of add nodes |
21:53 |
Exio4 |
897? |
21:54 |
proller |
you can fall via mengersponge without stuck |

what are these math mapgens actually good for? (as in practical use) |

NekoGloop |
there isn't |

ive seen more practical features turned down for "lack of usefulness" :p |

I wonder what's up with the air pockets |
22:00 |
FreeFull |
Those weren't really there in the older mapgens |
22:00 |
FreeFull |
At least, not everywhere |
22:00 |
FreeFull |
You can see them all rising when you turn finite liquids on |
22:00 |
Peacock |
colored lights, animated (waving) plants, real (low-lying) fog, shit like that would be fun :-) |
22:01 |
Peacock |
defining nodeboxes by verticles (for slopes) also :-) |
22:01 |
proller |
FreeFull, i 90% know how to silently pop bubbles without rising |
22:01 |
proller |
and maybe fix it soon |
22:01 |
Peacock |
freefull i have no idea where the air pockets come from, i was told to add a few lines to minetest.conf, but they still remain |
22:02 |
Peacock |
*vertices not verticles lol |
22:04 |
proller |
i want make adjusted mengersponge for wingsuit contest, it can be fun |
22:04 |

in theory a spherical map would be fun, but with the proper gravity |

otherwise all you can do with it is a deathstar |

Peacock: Seems to me like the automatic water node filling in isn't happening |
22:06 |

By that I mean the same thing you get when you make an infinite water source |
22:06 |
Peacock |
maybe its got to do with the viscosity >1 bug |
22:07 |
Peacock |
either way, finite liquids used to just work, now they dont :( |
22:07 |
Peacock |
*infinite |
22:07 |

whatever the fuck they call the old liquids lol |
22:07 |

Peacock, call them "real" liquids to troll proller |
22:08 |

ill just call them low-CPU liquids for now :P |
22:08 |

im sorry, i thought minetest didn't care about realism :P |

proller, the commit I linked adds liquidtype = "finite" and drawtype = "finite_liquid" to nodedef |
22:12 |
Peacock |
does that mean old liquids will work like before? |
22:13 |
proller |
PilzAdam, what this... |
22:13 |
Peacock |
or was the airpocket thing fixed with 991 or 990 |
22:15 |
proller |
PilzAdam, its totally destroys my liquid idea |
22:15 |
PilzAdam |
proller, what is your idea? |
22:16 |
proller |
transformLiquidsFinite |
22:16 |
proller |
did you know how it works? |
22:16 |
PilzAdam |
not really |
22:18 |
proller |
making other draw type - bad |
22:18 |
PilzAdam |
why? |
22:19 |
proller |
you want to keep old and new liquids in one world? |
22:19 |
FreeFull |
I think the ultimate antigrief device would be lava that cannot be picked up in any way whatsoever, and when you break blocks around it it doesn't pour, and you can't place blocks in it |
22:19 |
PilzAdam |
proller, yes |
22:19 |
proller |
PilzAdam, for what? |
22:20 |
PilzAdam |
mods may want to add finite oil, while water can stay the same |
22:20 |
PilzAdam |
(same == current liquids) |
22:20 |
proller |
same shit? |
22:20 |
proller |
ok |
22:20 |
PilzAdam |
no, not the same shit |
22:20 |
PilzAdam |
same goodness ;-) |
22:21 |
proller |
why no make all liquids real and finite? |
22:21 |
FreeFull |
Because that's not fun |
22:21 |
PilzAdam |
proller, I dont want to force people to use one kind of liquid |
22:22 |
proller |
FreeFull, not fun what? |
22:22 |

What if you want to make a waterfall? |
22:22 |
proller |
you can |
22:22 |
proller |
look at Sky server |
22:22 |
PilzAdam |
for 10 seconds? and then? |
22:23 |
proller |
it have forever waterfalls |
22:23 |
proller |
from infinity sources |
22:23 |
PilzAdam |
so finite liquids arent finite? |
22:23 |
NekoGloop |
that's why proller hates it |
22:23 |
proller |
look up^^ |
22:23 |
NekoGloop |
because waterfalls are hate |
22:24 |
proller |
"finite must be renamed" |
22:24 |
proller |
it CAN be finite |
22:24 |
proller |
and can be with normalized 0-level |
22:25 |
proller |
now by default its have good balance |
22:25 |
PilzAdam |
also, my finite liquids commit only has 1 liquid node; a second one is not needed |

Exio4 |
pizza \o/ |

22:28 |
proller |
my can be true-constant-volume |
22:28 |
proller |
and liquid act as liquid |
22:30 |
PilzAdam |
why do you want to make sand a liquid? |
22:30 |
NekoGloop |
quicksand, duh |
22:31 |
