nah, I mean back in the days of the Commodore 64, if you got a 300 baud modem, I'm pretty sure it was 300 baud both ways. |

but cable caps it |

if it weren't for the litigious bastards out there who are scared shitless of fast upstream pipes, we would be seeing 30/30Mbps or more as standard. |

ISPs do trafic shaping, and alot more on UL |

a former ISP of mine cancelled my subscription in 2005 when i was able to prove it (and they sold me 'unlimited') |

we need better laws on usury and false advertising lol |

when you are buying their "service" you are accepting, because you probably never read, a thing like "you can fuck me and i will not say anything" |

well we used to have good laws on usury, once they were gone credit cards came along :p |

nowadays banks reserve the right to raise your rates and limit with prior warning/approuval |

ive heard stories that in some states judges are putting debtors in jail |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0HcI9ZmGeI we need this mod... |
00:43 |

what does it do? |
00:44 |
Kacey |
watch the video and find out |
00:44 |
sokomine |
no. i usually don't watch youtube |
00:44 |
sokomine |
can't even with my current browser. eliminated flash |
00:45 |
kaeza |
sokomine, HTML5? |
00:46 |
kaeza |
OldCoder, that's bad... someone should either fix or completely remove that command |
00:47 |
mauvebic |
you need clearobjects, especially where bullets/arrows are involved |
00:47 |
kaeza |
yeah, but it usually locks up the server |
00:48 |
mauvebic |
well it needs to fixed not removed |
00:48 |
kaeza |
Octupus called /clearobjects the other day... two days straight without server, until OC restarted it |
00:49 |
mauvebic |
part of the blame lies with modders who dont take care of their own entities |
00:49 |
kaeza |
mauvebic, that's not entirely true |
00:49 |
mauvebic |
well if it takes *that* long, there must be a shitload of entities on the map |
00:50 |
Sketch2 |
what is clearobjects? are you talking about alpha channel in images or something? |
00:50 |
kaeza |
my firearms mod creates huge amounts of entities (especially the shotgun or the launcher w/ smoke enabled) |
00:50 |
VanessaE |
clearobjects goes through the whole map and deletes all entities. |
00:50 |
VanessaE |
MOBs, NPCs, dropped blocks, etc. |
00:50 |
mauvebic |
well before you made firearms i made war and paysage mods and learned to add a killswitch after a timeout |
00:50 |
mauvebic |
i dont need to clearobjets |
00:50 |
kaeza |
and even then some entities are orphaned or whatever you call it |
00:51 |
kaeza |
i.e. the game loses control of them |
00:51 |
Sketch2 |
oh, ok. ty |
00:51 |
mauvebic |
so youre saying people are placing too many mobs/NPCs ? |
00:51 |
mauvebic |
a simple variable keeping track and capping the number of entities would fix that |
00:52 |
mauvebic |
as for dropped nodes, im not quite fond of those as entities anyhow |
00:52 |
Sketch2 |
currently tweaking stained glass into frosted glass and I'm having trouble with the lack of alpha, so I was hoping you were saying they were fixing that |
00:52 |
mauvebic |
id rather delete/clear my inv |
00:52 |
VanessaE |
Sketch2: not a chance. fixing that would be difficult at best |
00:53 |
kaeza |
mauvebic, that's why I suggested that moretrees should not drop leaves as items on leafdecay |
00:53 |
mauvebic |
well transparency works for water, using the same texture and alpha values on nodes and nodeboxes dont seem to work tho |
00:53 |
mauvebic |
oh well i dont use moretrees per-say, i just use the models with an instant-spawner |
00:53 |
mauvebic |
otherwise i treat the leaves like default leaves |
00:54 |
mauvebic |
all im saying is, dont blame the devs if ya'll cant keep track of how many entities you let your players create :p |
00:56 |
Sketch2 |
ok, wait- why's water different again? it's rendered differently than the rest? |
00:56 |
kaeza |
mauvebic, it's not that you will fire a single shot/place a single mob in a 32 km³ |
00:56 |
kaeza |
:) |
00:56 |
mauvebic |
just a guess, but it must be the liquid drawtype |
00:56 |
mauvebic |
i didn't quite understand that last statement :P |
00:57 |
Sketch2 |
maybe it's calling a different part of the render engine |
00:57 |
kaeza |
I mean, you have a 32000x32000x32000 world, and you plan to limit the number of npcs to 20 or 30? |
00:57 |
mauvebic |
well take bullets for instance, real bullets fall to the ground after a certain distance and become inert, so theres no reason game bullets shouldn't 'die' after a certain time/distance |
00:57 |
mauvebic |
as for mobs, put caps on how many of each can exist at any given time |
00:57 |
Sketch2 |
wonder if glass could be considered solid water |
00:58 |
kaeza |
mauvebic, IMHO that is the engine's task; to load/unload entities as need arises |
00:59 |
kaeza |
you need not worry about that in mod code |
00:59 |
kaeza |
*shouldn't need to |
00:59 |
mauvebic |
hmm, well thats a debate you need to have with the devs not me |
00:59 |
mauvebic |
i saw the problem and took care of it |
01:00 |
mauvebic |
and its certainly technically possible with the API at hand |
01:01 |
mauvebic |
thing is, performance improves slightly, so everyone goes overboard with the entities, which honestly, was shit a little while ago :p |

01:04 |
mauvebic |
well, rather than remove a useful command, id go with a conf option to limit the total number of entities for any 1 instance of minetest |
01:05 |
Naked |
turn down the power of the command |
01:05 |
mauvebic |
naw, limit the total number of entities you can add to the world in the first place, so clearobject doesn't take a fortnight |
01:06 |
Naked |
say /clearobjects 1 clears in your chunk or all the chunks surrounding your current position. like only 1 chunk outside your position |
01:06 |
mauvebic |
ah well, maybe add a radius paramater to clearobjects? |
01:06 |
mauvebic |
no param == all map |
01:07 |
mauvebic |
though limiting the scope of clearobjects will do nothing to deal with the large amount of entities already present |
01:07 |
mauvebic |
ittl just take longer to get it done |
01:07 |
Naked |
also add a high level permission needed to use that command with a yes/no prompt after using it |
01:07 |
mauvebic |
isnt clearobjects somewhere in /builtin? |
01:08 |

you can change /add the priv there |

Oh yeah |
05:35 |
us_0gb |
I hope it's not to "fix" the even distribution. I like the even distribution. |
05:35 |
hmmmm |
it's really simple, instead of taking a single string as the name of the node to place as ore, i'd take in a node structure, where you can also specify param1 and param2 |
05:35 |
telek |
Is it just me or is the enhanced_inventory mod or whatever it's called missing a back button from the craft menu? |
05:35 |
us_0gb |
Oh, nice! |
05:36 |
VanessaE |
you mean unified inventory? |
05:36 |
VanessaE |
or inventory plus? |
05:36 |
hmmmm |
proller needs it so he can make liquid springs with finite liquid enabled, but you can make stars with it too by placing air ore with param1 = 0xFF |
05:36 |
us_0gb |
If you are using a modern copy of inventory_plus, no back button is needed on the craft page. |
05:37 |
hmmmm |
in theory it should give off about the same effect as is in that screenshot |
05:37 |
us_0gb |
Stars, that would be interesting. |

i also have another ridiculous idea that's actually just a simplified version of an old idea that was rejected, i won't mention what it is though |

OK. So it is reported to the server as well with the key being down, and the server may then run a different set of actions? |
13:25 |

rarkenin, for formspecs that are opened by the engine its client side, but for the on_rightclick() of wich are called in Lua its sever side (obviously) |

what has reduced rate and what not is sometimes confusing. eating food at where it is sold has the higher tax rate, while taking it away to eat elsewhere has the reduced rate. apart from these oddities, i think it's a good system |

21:08 |
hmmmm |
in that version, i forgot to print a newline, so it doesn't get printed out until after that other error happens and prints to the console |
21:09 |
hmmmm |
the ore error itself is caused by making certain ore too scarce, this has been corrected some time ago |

in a nutshell, he thinks he's better than all of us because he uses an unmaintainable amount of object orientation in his code and we don't |
21:57 |
mauvebic |
hmm, well php's and lua's classes were pretty limited, so i only ever used them when absolutely necessary |
21:57 |
mauvebic |
otherwise yeah theres alot of gunk for nothing, functional works just as well and is slightly easier to comprehend |
21:57 |
hmmmm |
you mean imperative |
21:58 |
hmmmm |
and object-oriented programming can be either functional or imperative, it's describing a different aspect |

22:01 |

oh, no, no, you don't need to be advanced to understand it, you just need to have been the one to write it to understand it |
22:01 |
mauvebic |
true |
22:01 |
hmmmm |
you'll also need several UML diagrams and flowcharts to help you understand what the hell is going on, when you could've spent that extra time you used for all that overhead to _just code_ |
22:01 |
Exio |
the only thing what i don't like of an "OOP" code is the overhead of the code |
22:01 |
mauvebic |
though im about to give lua classes a shot for pipes since the current code is a mess lol |
22:01 |
hmmmm |
it's metaprogramming at its finest |
22:02 |
hmmmm |
you're not actually getting anything accomplished |
22:02 |
Uberi |
hmmmm: to write an API, you must first define the universe |
22:02 |
hmmmm |
lua classes are fine |
22:02 |
hmmmm |
the level of OO we use is great |
22:02 |
hmmmm |
it simplifies things |
22:02 |
mauvebic |
ok so its relative to spending lots of time on specs and little on coding? |
22:02 |

there's a point though |

more than that, but yeah, basically. |

well take pipes and its devices for instance: lots of similiar properties, but not necessarily the same connecting sides, amounts of flow pressure, or actions to be taken |

VanessaE |
heh |
23:33 |
jordan4ibanez |
I just realized something |
23:34 |
jordan4ibanez |
in minecraft there's a hard limit because the player's position number gets so huge it starts to become imprecise |
23:35 |
jordan4ibanez |
if you broke the map up into map sectors ( a part of the map that when the number gets to say, 31000, it starts to go back down as you go into the next map sector |
23:35 |
jordan4ibanez |
if you did that, you could say, have 31000 map sectors with a limit of 31000 nodes |
23:35 |
jordan4ibanez |
minetest* |
23:35 |
VanessaE |
wouldn't do any good, precision in minetest is horribly imprecise that far out anyway |
23:35 |
VanessaE |
you'd need to cut it off at more like half that range or less |
23:36 |
VanessaE |
"precision [...] is horribly imprecise" ... heh |
23:36 |
jordan4ibanez |
NO! it wouldn't be, because walking into the next map sector, would be like walking back to the center of the map of the sector that you just left, only it will be a different sector with different terrain |
23:36 |
jordan4ibanez |
each sector could have it's own database |
23:36 |
Exio |
code it |
23:37 |
VanessaE |
yeah but when you're 30000 out from center, shit gets all glitchy. 2d objects disappear, nodeboxes jitter around |
23:37 |
jordan4ibanez |
then limit the map sectors to 25000 |
23:37 |
VanessaE |
more like 16000 or less. |
23:38 |
jordan4ibanez |
I have no idea how, I don't know c++ |
23:38 |
VanessaE |
the correct solution of course is to just increase the range and fix whatever is causing that imprecision in the first damn place |
23:38 |
jordan4ibanez |
I just know the logic behind fixing the glitch without rewriting a _huge_ amount of code |
23:38 |
Exio |
VanessaE: what was the way to hang the server and make it eat the whole ram+cpu? |
23:38 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
i agree i want stuff but dont know C++ |
23:38 |
VanessaE |
whether that would be hard or easy, I have no clue at all. |
23:39 |

jojoa1997|Tablet: saying things is easy, coding them isn't |

objects* |
23:39 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
eh |
23:39 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
it is hard when you got no sleep |
23:39 |
VanessaE |
Exio: it just happens. I have no idea why, celeron55 says it's because of the way the engine checks for collisions - at high acceleration values, the check eats tons of CPU+RAM because it has to check huge volumes of space. |
23:39 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
\this summer i am staying up for 3 days stright |

https://github.com/EXio4/minetest/commit/901795681df676ab77b386da95fa2d890347187d |
23:39 |
VanessaE |
so your fix might have actually fixed it enough to stop it from happening |
23:39 |
Exio |
it should fix both then, or what? |
23:39 |
VanessaE |
possibly, yes |
23:39 |
jordan4ibanez |
the only thing I do know, is that position would have to has an S value added for sectors, so {x=,y=,z=,s=} |
23:40 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
no |
23:40 |
VanessaE |
5000 may be a bit high, why not 500? |
23:40 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
then you wont know where you are |
23:40 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
maybe |
23:40 |
Exio |
because you can reach 500 "legit" |
23:40 |
Exio |
when falling in simplenode mapgen |
23:40 |
jordan4ibanez |
or even sectors acting as HUGE nodes, like {x=,y=,z=,{sx=,sy=,sz=}} |
23:40 |
VanessaE |
Exio: exactly, but 500 is half again as fast as a human being can possibly move through thin air. |
23:40 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
{x=,y=,z=,x'=,y'=,z'=} |
23:40 |
VanessaE |
iow insanely fast |
23:40 |
jojoa1997|Tablet |
the ' means sectores |
23:41 |
VanessaE |
so 5000 is ludicrous speed :-) |
23:41 |
Exio |
VanessaE: hm, the collisionMoveResult is not *only* for the player |
23:41 |
Exio |
i see it "ok" because the engine is good enough to handle 5000 |
23:41 |

maybe sectors are map chunks |

23:42 |

23:42 |
VanessaE |
NakedFury: the cap on player/item/entity speed. |
23:42 |

23:43 |

23:43 |
Exio |
i think it is "pixels" (as every node is 16, iirc) |
23:43 |
Exio |
it is used with the BS value |
23:43 |
VanessaE |
Exio: it would be 10, and they're not pixels. I noticed the *BS multiplier. |
23:43 |
Exio |
what is used for everything, really |
23:43 |

so then 5000 would be 500m/sec |

that cap is reasonable then. |
23:45 |

Exio: as long as you're patching this, perhaps you should add a hard limit to player/object/entity positions to never go below -30912 or whatever it is. |
23:45 |
VanessaE |
that's another known way to crash a server. |
