rubenwardy, yeah i use wine to run minetest if i need to copy/paste something since linux version doesn't allow it for some reason. |

shamelessly states that he has created a Minds account, because its an open source YouTube alternative and /me is also putting all his videos on it https://www.minds.com/benrob0329 |

I need to start putting the video titles in the videos themselves, Minds assumes that you do because you have to use part of the video as the thumbnail. |

I hope you evaluate to 11 or the world has gone mad |

hi sofar |
07:35 |

tenplus1: how far did you get on Inside the Box? |
07:36 |

I played the tutorial levels 1 by 1... lemmie sign on and check |
07:36 |
sofar |
saw you logged on, didn't see how far you got |
07:36 |
sofar |
we added 2 new boxes to the "master series" ... amazingly good levels |
07:37 |

someone spent 5hrs on one of the levels |
07:37 |

ah pretty good, almost at the end of the tutorial for now then |
07:37 |

I like the puzzles, but hiding a button near a fall is sneaky |
07:37 |

seems the tutorial is difficult enough I might consider making it slightly easier |

tenplus1, seeing that your server uses toolranks, I'd really hate to change stuff without asking you. Have you seen the code this random person posted on my forum post? |
07:49 |
tenplus1 |
yeah I saw it earlier... personally level 6 is fine, we dont wanna OP tools so they never break... but the choice is yours |
07:50 |
lisac |
hm you are right. Tools still need to spend some materials for repair. If they spend too little, they become OPed. |
07:51 |
lisac |
what about raising the node count? |
07:52 |
tenplus1 |
that would be fine :) dont want it to be too easy now... digging 1200 nodes for level 6 tools is kinda easy |
07:52 |
tenplus1 |
or is it 2400...lol |

08:27 |
tenplus1 |
kewl thanks :) will update xanadu today with new levels |
08:33 |
tenplus1 |
why not add a special enchantment item you can use to make tools infinite |
08:34 |
rdococ |
yey |
08:34 |
rdococ |
an anvil would be cool |
08:34 |
rdococ |
you'd be able to take a tool or armor, and the material it uses, and smelt them to get a repaired tool |
08:34 |
tenplus1 |
lisac: something super hard to craft, takes forever to get items needed, place in crafting 1st with tool next and changes level to 100 which level check interprits as NO WEAR |
08:35 |
rdococ |
lol |
08:35 |
lisac |
hmm |
08:35 |
tenplus1 |
yeah rdococ, we do need an anvil to place items like tools and armor we can repair with simple ingots and diamonds etc |
08:35 |
lisac |
not sure that is a good idea. |
08:35 |
lisac |
Maybe call it 'limited tool'? |
08:35 |
rdococ |
lava sword |
08:35 |
lisac |
and make it possible to craft max of 1000 of those. |
08:35 |
rdococ |
very strong, but only one hit before it melts |
08:36 |
lisac |
tenplus1, if you make something rare and very useful, you simply ask for grinding those materials. |
08:36 |
rdococ |
true |
08:36 |
lisac |
ex. players only searching for them |
08:37 |
rdococ |
and it would become rare no longer |
08:37 |
tenplus1 |
hrm, something that gives progression to the game |
08:37 |
rdococ |
something that gets rarer to find as time goes on? |
08:38 |
tenplus1 |
that would be ideal |
08:38 |
tenplus1 |
I did that with crystal spikes in ethereal, but too many players know how to farm them now :D |
08:38 |
rdococ |
even if that spurs people into grinding a lot of it early on, once the supply from that can't meet the demand, the number of that item will drop by a lot |
08:39 |
lisac |
tenplus1, I had a great idea a while ago |
08:39 |
lisac |
add 'reskins' basically tools which look different |
08:39 |
tenplus1 |
do tell |
08:40 |
lisac |
they are colored very differently |
08:40 |
lisac |
and probably based of a single tool |
08:40 |
lisac |
like a diamond pickaxe but purple colored |
08:40 |
tenplus1 |
xdecor does that with enchantment table... it's limited in it's own ways |
08:40 |
rdococ |
mw ha ha! your purple diamond sword is no match for my red diamond sword! |
08:40 |
lisac |
yes: but these aren't craftable |
08:41 |
lisac |
you need to find them in chests inside dungeons. |
08:41 |
lisac |
and there are sets. |
08:41 |
lisac |
for example purple-red set |
08:41 |
rdococ |
idea: gold karat system. |
08:41 |
rdococ |
low-karat gold would be easier to find than high-karat gold |
08:42 |
lisac |
rdococ, I'd rather just make players able to 'purify' gold |
08:42 |
rdococ |
lol, I like how so many people misspell it as carrot |
08:42 |
lisac |
using smelting or something. |
08:42 |
rdococ |
lisac: what would pure gold do though? |
08:42 |
lisac |
it looks nice |
08:42 |
rdococ |
that it? :P |
08:43 |
lisac |
gold does nothing in MT anyways. :D |
08:43 |
tenplus1 |
gold is used for many things in my mods... |
08:43 |
rdococ |
what would be cool is combining gold with a white metal to get electrum |
08:43 |
Raven262 |
Hi tenplus1 |
08:43 |
tenplus1 |
protectors, potions, regen foods |
08:43 |
rdococ |
electrum would be more durable than the white metal, and stronger than gold |
08:43 |
lisac |
tenplus1, these, basically: https://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Decorated |
08:44 |
tenplus1 |
but yeah, we need a way to SMELT ores... |
08:44 |
rdococ |
also, using a furnace to cook food is a little overkill :P |
08:45 |
lisac |
add ovens which can cook only food items, but multiple at once |
08:45 |
Raven262 |
And require water to cook stuff |
08:45 |
Raven262 |
also salt |
08:45 |
rdococ |
ooh |

08:46 |
lisac |
hey tenplus1 why not make farming_plus spend water |
08:46 |
tenplus1 |
spend water ? how u mean |
08:46 |
lisac |
like, take the node of water which made the soil wet and remove it |
08:46 |
Raven262 |
how about limiting the water so it can be depleted when not inside the original source? |
08:46 |
lisac |
then prevent water replicating |
08:46 |
rdococ |
ooh |
08:47 |
lisac |
and you've made a water a rare resource |
08:47 |
lisac |
which is nice, right? |
08:47 |
rdococ |
ooooOOOOoooOOOoh |
08:47 |
Raven262 |
water pump + barrels for transport |
08:47 |
tenplus1 |
many players use permanent water sources... cant take that away from them |
08:47 |
lisac |
permanent water sources take away the fun :P |
08:47 |
rdococ |
tenplus1: wouldn't mind it in a subgame |
08:47 |
rdococ |
in fact, I think I suggested this a while back |
08:47 |
tenplus1 |
I could make a watering can you need to use on soil to keep it wet... add a timer to soil so it goes dry again... but that woudl lag game |
08:47 |
lisac |
and add a water cart, which stores water |
08:48 |
Raven262 |
basically, same thing that factorio has |
08:48 |
rdococ |
also, pipeworks |
08:48 |
lisac |
nonono just take away the water when the plant starts growing. |
08:48 |
Raven262 |
combine with advtrains.... |
08:48 |
lisac |
1 water == 1 plant |
08:48 |
lisac |
combined with ways of transporting water... |
08:49 |
Raven262 |
We don't have any liquid resources in minetest, except for lava. And lava is transported in the buckets |
08:49 |
rdococ |
what I really want is to change water's physics |
08:49 |
Raven262 |
water is quite useless in default |
08:49 |
rdococ |
I might make a subgame |
08:50 |
rdococ |
where water is unrenewable |
08:50 |
tenplus1 |
that's easily changes |
08:50 |
rdococ |
true |
08:50 |
Raven262 |
like lava on xanadu :P |
08:50 |
tenplus1 |
yeah :) |
08:50 |
tenplus1 |
and laval spread |
08:50 |
tenplus1 |
I limited that to 3 nodes only |
08:51 |
tenplus1 |
water needs to spread in a stream (a line), not outward 6 blocks... that's weird... also fallign water onto water shouldnt spread but go straight down |
08:51 |
Raven262 |
so i can't make a tunnel and get lava flow elsewhere? |
08:53 |
rdococ |
does pipeworks have support for lava in pipes? |
08:53 |
tenplus1 |
I think so |
08:53 |
tenplus1 |
any liquids |
08:54 |
rdococ |
I once tried creating finite water... |
08:54 |
rdococ |
(in the core) |
08:54 |
rdococ |
kinda worked, but not really |
08:56 |
tenplus1 |
it liquids flow in steps, node by node instead of spreading...e.g. water starts as water_source and spreads in a line 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 in height |
08:56 |
tenplus1 |
not outwards |
08:57 |
rdococ |
I did create a finite water lua mod once |
08:57 |
rdococ |
think it worked except for a few minor bus |
08:57 |
rdococ |
bugs |
08:58 |
tenplus1 |
very server intensive though |
08:59 |
rdococ |
I also modified the minetest core once to try and add finite water there |
08:59 |
rdococ |
it kinda worked...wait, I already said this :P |
08:59 |
tenplus1 |
ehehe |
08:59 |
rdococ |
it would be cool, though, to modify the liquid flow we already have |
09:00 |
tenplus1 |
my main argument is spreading on actual water, it shouldnt do that at all |
09:00 |
rdococ |
my idea was simple: water should only flow around if there was air, or water of a lower level than it, nearby |
09:00 |
rdococ |
as in, flow around and decrease level by one |
09:01 |
rdococ |
if not, then the ordinary water flowing operation would be skipped |
09:04 |
tenplus1 |

09:05 |
rdococ |
ik what minecraft water physics are |
09:05 |
rdococ |
I just think that we shouldn't restrict minetest's water physics to the same thing |
09:05 |
rdococ |
sure, maybe have an option for it, but this is minetest |

hm... |
10:01 |
* rdococ |
is still thinking about the unrenewable water thing |
10:02 |
rdococ |
Rather than having a white dye, you'd have to craft dyed wool with a bucket of water to get white wool again (and the empty bucket back, of course). |
10:02 |
tenplus1 |
sounds good |
10:03 |
rdococ |
I don't think we need a thirst system, because if we're going to have a hunger mod too, we'd need the water to grow crops anyway. |
10:03 |
tenplus1 |
yeah, and humans get some of there water needs through food anyhoo |
10:03 |
rdococ |
true |
10:18 |
rdococ |
we could go one step further and force players to smelt the water to get clean water for growing crops |
10:19 |
tenplus1 |
cook the water to return pure water and salt as biproduct :) |
10:19 |
rdococ |
yeah |
10:25 |
lisac |
hey tenplus1 hoppers won't work on Xanadu |

if you are making your own subgame then yeah, it's a good start... drop minetest_game folder into your local games one and rename it before editing |
10:42 |
rdococ |
yeah |
10:43 |
rdococ |
that's what I'm doing |
10:43 |
tenplus1 |
only thing with that though is you gotta keep up with all the latest changes in minetest_game and apply them to your subgame when needed... |
10:43 |
rdococ |
true |
10:44 |
rdococ |
at least I have the latest minetest_game for sure (I recompiled MT recently so I could use 0.4.17-stable instead of 0.5.0-dev.) |
10:46 |
rdococ |
does the mech mod from insidethebox store relative position, then? |
10:48 |

no idea, havent checked code for that yet |

huh, found a way to easily create cool-looking embossed text |
10:51 |
Shara |
All fixable compatibility issues between caverealms and CRL should now be fixed, in case anyone was thinking of switching to CRL. |
10:52 |
tenplus1 |
hi shara |
10:52 |
Shara |
hi :P |
10:53 |
tenplus1 |
what compatibility issues ? |
10:53 |
Shara |
There were a few unknowns from the gems/spikes still |
10:53 |
Shara |
But added aliases now |
10:53 |
tenplus1 |
oh, when switching between versions |
10:54 |
Shara |
I can't do anything about the mapgen part of course |
10:55 |
Shara |
Switching from old caverealms cave generation back to the server's normal mapgen might create weirdness |
10:55 |
tenplus1 |
lol |
10:55 |
Shara |
(but how many maps don't have some weirdness anyway?) |
10:56 |
tenplus1 |
so true... especially with flight mapgen changes |
10:56 |
tenplus1 |
*slight |
10:58 |
rdococ |
lol |
10:59 |
rdococ |
I've copied minetest_game to a new folder, given it a new header and modified the icon, and stuff. |
11:00 |
rdococ |
At the moment, the only change is that water is no longer infinitely renewable. |
11:00 |
Shara |
what else will you change? |
11:00 |
rdococ |
Crops from the farming mod will absorb one node of water when they start growing. |
11:00 |
Shara |
If it's only things like that, it would be easier to make a mod with overrides |
11:01 |
rdococ |
True. |
11:01 |
Shara |
Easier to maintain :P |
11:01 |
tenplus1 |
yup |
11:01 |
rdococ |
should I use register_node(":default:water_source", {stuff}) then? |
11:01 |
rdococ |
I only want to modify some properties, so override_node would be a bit of a hassle. |
11:02 |
tenplus1 |
minetest.override_item(node, stuff) |
11:02 |
rdococ |
Isn't there a way to override a node without having to specify every property again? |
11:02 |
tenplus1 |
you dont have to specify all properties, only the item you wanna change |
11:03 |
tenplus1 |
minetest.override_item("default:lava_flowing", {liquid_renewable = true, liquid_range = 3}) |
11:03 |
rdococ |
oh... |
11:03 |
Shara |
Isn't it going to get really annoying over time if you do that with water and crops, so that eventually whole seas get drained? |
11:04 |
Shara |
Or will you have another method to introduce new water? |
11:04 |
rdococ |
true |
11:04 |
rdococ |
hm |
11:04 |
rdococ |
see, the idea is to make water an actual resource |
11:04 |
Shara |
then you need rain that actually... rains? |
11:05 |
rdococ |
hm |
11:05 |
Shara |
Maybe use a weather mod, and if you can detect when a weather type starts/ends, that's the ohnly time water is renewable? |
11:05 |
Shara |
only* |
11:05 |
rdococ |
maybe, but meh |
11:06 |
rdococ |
I don't know of a good way to make water a resource you have to actually obtain when the world has whole oceans of the stuff |
11:06 |
Shara |
Well, yea... But this is why it is renewable by default :P |
11:06 |
Shara |
Use a mapgen that has river water... |
11:06 |
Shara |
Normal wate ris seawater, therefore salt water |
11:06 |
Shara |
water is* |
11:07 |
rdococ |
that is true |
11:07 |
tenplus1 |
you could amend farming to need river_water_source to grow |
11:07 |
rdococ |
yeah, I was thinking of that |
11:07 |
Shara |
river water isn't renwable ither though |
11:07 |
Shara |
renewable* |
11:07 |
rdococ |
and maybe you'd be able to smelt sea water into real water, or would that make the resource too common? |

So you still have the first problem. |
11:08 |
Shara |
You'll run the rivers dry if farming consumes water and there is no new river water |
11:08 |
rdococ |
true, but not if you can smelt sea water to get river water |
11:08 |
Shara |
But if rain makes river water renew, you'd get an interesting flooding mechanic as well maybe... so you'd start wanting rain, but not too much |
11:11 |
rdococ |
I have a weather mod, but the rain there depends on where you are - it might be raining where you are, but not where someone else is, for example |
11:11 |
rdococ |
I could use an ABM only targeting flowing river water blocks that are nearby source blocks, though. |

hi cal |
11:11 |

I had a driving exam this morning, but I'm not confident about the outcome |
11:12 |
rdococ |
(the ABM is so that I can control the river water to only renew in the areas it's raining) |
11:12 |
tenplus1 |
dont worry dude, you'll get better :) |
11:12 |
Shara |
Best of luck Calinou :) |

srifqi: it very likely is possible to compile from WSL to Windows, but it's less hacky if you do it directly from Windows with MinGW :P |

I heard that it's possible that the debug builds run too slow to cause the crashes |
18:02 |
tenplus1 |
I wouldnt be surprised... |
18:02 |
IhrFussel |
I mean if it's caused by race conditions those may never happened in debug mode |

thx benrob |
18:03 |
IhrFussel |
tenplus1, I also had that serialize.h bug in the past...updating MT fixed it for some reasons...or it was fixed by updating a faulty mod |
18:04 |
tenplus1 |
we dont have it as frequently as before which is great, but it does happen and reset server... cant track the damned thing down |
18:11 |
IhrFussel |
I thought mods couldn't cause segfaults, but they certainly can...I provoked one myself by putting a file handler in the on_use callback of a tool ... when someone dug extremely fast it caused a segfault |
18:13 |
IhrFussel |
As soon as I removed that file handler again the segfaults stopped, so it's 100% evidence of mods causing segfaults |
18:14 |
tenplus1 |
problem is no errors appear to figure what's causing them in the mod |
18:14 |
tenplus1 |
or entity |

benrob0329: mobile Chrome isn't so bad, mobile Firefox is another thing |
19:49 |
Calinou |
I wish I could use Chromium on Android, but it lacks a DuckDuckGo search option, and reliable content blocking (uBlock Origin) |
19:51 |
tenplus1 |
try the browser "Ghostery" on android/iphone... it's really good, has privacy options and built in adblock |
19:55 |
Calinou |
Ghostery is proprietary, though :( |
19:55 |
Calinou |
I'm on Firefox 55, which is supposed to have e10s, but not enabled by default perhaps |
19:56 |

Firefox 57 enables it by default, breaking legacy add-ons |

benrob0329: which problems? |
20:35 |
Calinou |
Chromium's devtools are much more complete |
20:35 |
Calinou |
but other than that… |
20:36 |
Calinou |
(that does matter to me though, as a webdev :P) |
20:37 |
nerzhul |
Calinou, it depends on your plugins |
20:38 |
Calinou |
Chromium has really good devtools out of the box, without needing any plugins |
20:38 |
Calinou |
and there's a dark theme for devtools since ~10 versions or so :P |
20:39 |
Calinou |
you can also zoom in/out of the devtools to change the font size |
20:40 |
rubenwardy |
I prefer Firefox's dev tools |
20:40 |
rubenwardy |
personally |
20:40 |

rubenwardy, +1 |
20:40 |

21:13 |
benrob0329 |
Calinou: Pulseaudio as a hard dependency, bad performance on android |
21:18 |
IhrFussel |
Firefox sends usage stats to their servers without your permission AFAIK...many people run away from it |
21:19 |
IhrFussel |
The market share shrinks...Chrome/Chromium are clearly #1 objectively |
21:20 |
IhrFussel |
Firefox had its golden days before Chromium was born |
21:21 |
Calinou |
IhrFussel: Chrome does the same thing (telemetry) and it's not fully disableable |
21:21 |
Calinou |
(Chromium too) |
21:21 |
Calinou |
Firefox makes it possible to fully opt-out (but it doesn't ask you on first start, unfortunately) |
21:21 |
benrob0329 |
All modern browsers suck in one way or another |
21:22 |
IhrFussel |
Most browsers have one major problem: They only work good for ONE OS ... I have yet to find one that features the EXACT same support on multiple OS's |
21:23 |
benrob0329 |
despite the fact that we have a ton of cross platform libraries nowadays |
21:51 |
IhrFussel |
benrob0329, yes to me it seems like nobody really wants to support Linux (outside out Android) |
21:51 |
IhrFussel |
outside of* |
21:52 |
Calinou |
IhrFussel: it's rare for large software developers with a "commercial" mentality to support Linux well |
21:52 |
Calinou |
unfortunately |
21:53 |
Calinou |
if you look at most of the Linux game ports, they have performance issues, distribution issues (hard to run on anything that's not Ubuntu), etc |
21:53 |
nerzhul |
no it's not rare to support linux, but yes support minetest and UI engine is rare |
21:53 |
Calinou |
there is supporting Linux, and supporting Linux *well* :) |
21:54 |
nerzhul |
many infrastructure software are from an enterprise (haproxy, nginx, mysql, mariadb, docker, kubernetes, openstack...) |
21:56 |
IhrFussel |
Most popular softwares are not available on Linux ... companies don't really care about the ~ 5% desktop users |
21:57 |
nerzhul |
but most popular company support linux for enterprise server softwares, sorry :) |
21:57 |
nerzhul |
desktop is not important, money is in B2B not B2C when you don't sell hardware |
21:57 |
IhrFussel |
Server != desktop ... Desktop support is missing |
21:58 |
IhrFussel |
No they just go where the money is...Windows Desktop |
21:59 |
nerzhul |
for B2C yes, B2B no |
22:00 |
nerzhul |
and you forget android market which is huge |
22:00 |
IhrFussel |
I excluded Android cause it's something else |
22:00 |
nerzhul |
no, it's B2C too :) |
22:01 |
IhrFussel |
But not desktop either...also not server...it's its own category |
22:01 |
nerzhul |
and certainly the biggest market we have in B2C these days, windows is not increasing, ANdroid replaces PC, OSX and IOS replaces Windows, and Linux is slowly increasing |
22:01 |
nerzhul |
android is a terminal which replaces windows for 80% users needs without problem these days :) |
22:02 |
nerzhul |
for the 20% , either do it at work (print, ...) either you don't need :p |
