Is there a known bug related to sneak-jump in 5.5.1? I was going to create an issue of it with some screen captures, but thought I'll ask first. |
07:42 |
MAGNETAR |
When pressing (and holding) sneak and jump in a 2-node tall passage-way, the player continues to remain up and essentially levitate, until either sneak or jump is released. |

Drafting issue and posting it in about two hours. Please stop me from doing that if this is already a known bug. :) |

Hello quick question. How do I find out my OGL version in MT? |
09:33 |
MAGNETAR |
minetest --version doesn't show the OGL version either. |
09:34 |
MAGNETAR |
I run MT in fullscreen, and I believe if I run it in windowed mode, the OGL version appears in the title bar (?). But I'd like to know the recommended way. :) |

minetest can't do this https://modrinth.com/mod/friendcode |
16:39 |
Oblomov |
why would minetest do that? |
16:40 |
MTDiscord |
<GoodClover> It avoids opening a port on your router if I understand it correctly. |
16:40 |
MTDiscord |
<GoodClover> but… you need to set up a "SAM bridge" |
16:43 |
Oblomov |
yeah because I'm trusting an external service to reverse tunnel through my firewall's router |
16:43 |
Oblomov |
what happened to upnp? |
16:43 |
Oblomov |
(btw, I wonder if minetest supports upnp to open/close the router port(s) as needed?) |
16:47 |
MTDiscord |
<GoodClover> looks like SAM is just another protocol on top of I2P… p2p rendezvous stuff if magic to me but I don't think any external service is being used here |
16:48 |
MTDiscord |
<MNH48> would that work over CGNAT though? in some places even fiber optic is under CGNAT because there's not enough public IPv4 to assign to the individual internet subscriber |
16:48 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> Tbh the external service would be a nice option for users who aren't able to do the port forward thing, and I've considered building similar tools myself. |

does anyone know of a way I can get gamepad support? I've been wanting to hook up minetest to a family TV for the kiddo but a keyboard and mouse is a bit cumbersome for the setup |
16:49 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> People stuck behind CGNAT right now either need to use a public overlay network like yggdrasil, with all the drawbacks that entails, or they need a generous friend with a VPS who can setup a reverse tunnel for them ... but all of that requires quite some technical know-how. |
16:49 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> Ideally something like WebRTC could be used to establish peer-to-peer connections automatically |
16:49 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> jaydemir: antimicrox is what I use to get gamepad support. |
16:50 |
Oblomov |
would be nice if MT had better gamepad support built in though |
16:50 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> Could be nice, if it's done well enough, yeah... |
16:50 |
Oblomov |
I saw something about that for the steamdeck iirc? |
16:54 |
Soni |
yes i2p works over symmetric NAT/CGNAT |
16:54 |
Soni |
it's a STUN+TURN p2p network |
16:54 |
Soni |
in fact CGNAT support is the selling point |
16:55 |
jaydemir |
looking up antimicrox, looks promising. Is this something I can enable/disable as needed? |
16:57 |
Soni |
you can also just embed i2p but that's more effort than a game jam allows |
16:57 |
rubenwardy |
If you use steam, another option is to add Minetest as a non steam game and then use steam input for controller bindings |
16:58 |
jaydemir |
I wouldnt use steam on a family machine like that but that is a really good suggestion otherwise |

Hi good people, it is a few years since I ran a minecraft / minetest server instance. One of the guys who runs tutorial series at local schools and libraries has asked if I would do so again. I'm told it will need approx 4GB RAM, I think 50GB HDD should be enough which then leaves the question of how many CPU cores? It will be running on a Debian 11 instance on a Intel Xeon E5-1620v2 CPU the server is on a 500Mb/s link, so I do not see |
17:17 |
phillw |
that as an issue as my 1st one was running on a 100 Mb/s link. |
17:24 |
phillw |
If the RAM / HDD space needs to be adjusted, please do say. It is going to be running as a KVM on one of my 'Daddy' servers |
17:24 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> In my experience, a Minetest server tends to need more than 1, but not more than 2, cores. |
17:25 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> One core to run the heavyweight "main thread", and a second for the less loaded threads, and the rest of the operating system overhead, to spill over into. |
17:26 |
phillw |
MTDiscord: thanks, sounds about right, I run Tor relays, and they get 2 cores each.. one for main job and a share of another for other 'stuff' :) |
17:26 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> If you can double that RAM it might help; I rarely hear of people running anything on <8 these days, so 4GB is sort of unknown territory.. |
17:28 |
phillw |
I can allocate it 8G, KVM treats things as maximum. I don't like to over allocate on my servers - unlike some well known companies. |
17:28 |
phillw |
one of the instances has 8G ... never used more than 2G :) |
17:30 |
phillw |
that's a tutorial system BBB (GDPR compliant TeamTalk/Zoom) |
17:30 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> A ton of minetest's performance and resource needs will depend on factors like which game/mods you run, how many players you have, some configuration stuff, and the play-style of your players, so the best thing to do is to measure it and adjust according to need as time goes on, and pay attention to trends. What you've got now sounds like a good starting point though. |
17:31 |
phillw |
MTDiscord: I've no idea how often they will destroy it to teach installation. |
17:31 |
phillw |
Or, if they want to keep it long term. |
17:32 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> Ah, if that's the case then long-term trends might become nice and flat :-) |

MTDiscord: disk space? |
17:42 |
phillw |
50 GB or 100 GB ? |
17:47 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> I think some of the longest-lived and largest MT public servers are in the 100G range, so 50G would be more appropriate for shorter-term or purpose-specific projects that you don't expect to accumulate much over time. |
17:48 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> Either way, it'd be better to expand as needed than to have to over-allocate at the beginning. |
17:50 |
phillw |
MTDiscord: I am on 2TB, 4TB and 6TB HDD's... 100 GB is not a problem :) |

<Warr1024> Not saying a higher-isolation virtualization system is a wrong solution, it's just not one I'm as familiar with, an so I forget the ins and outs of designing a solution with it. There are certain overhead costs to systems closer to the bare-metal end of the spectrum, but sometimes the improved isolation they buy you is worth it. |
18:20 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> I tend to run docker containers inside non-dedicated VPS hosting, myself, so definitely at the low-cost, low-isolation end of the spectrum :-) |
18:25 |
phillw |
MTDiscord: VPS are the ones I didn't say overcommit resources. I do rent mt servers, but they are bare metal and run the OS that I put on. I also book 16 x ipV4 addresses for the KVMs. Those ipV4's are *just* for that KVM... no sharing. We had an instance today where the ISP for one of the guys allocated him an ipV4 that was blacklisted.... WTH???!!!! do these companies not check their own allocations? |
