I'm thinking of starting up a new Minetest server, but I think my machine's 32-bit. Are there any quirks I should know about when running on 32-bit machines, such as the world not extending out as far or Lua floats not being as large? |
02:37 |
AlexYst |
My scripts have only been tested on a 64-bit machine, so they might need some tuning or something if 32-bit Minetest is different than 64-bit Minetest. |
02:54 |
paramat |
worlds are no smaller on 32 bit |
02:55 |
AlexYst |
Okay, sweet. Are the floats any smaller? Some of my scripts use some pretty big pseudo-integers. |
02:57 |
AlexYst |
It looks like I have some of my "integer" floats set to fake overflow at 9007199254740992; way over the 32-float limit. |

I think MT explicitly uses 64-bit integers where required (at least in the parts of code I've seen/broken). |
03:39 |
AlexYst |
luk3yx: Okay, sweet. Thank you! |
03:39 |
luk3yx |
I haven't load tested a 32-bit server or anything though, it'll probably run slightly slower because it's 32-bit however. |
03:41 |
AlexYst |
Yeah, I expect slowness. I'm poor though, so buying another computer just for Minetest seems out of the budget if I can get away with not doing it. |
03:43 |

G'night, all! I need to start my hour-long commute home so I can get up on time for my final exams tomorrow. |

hi there! New to minetest modding... I'd like to understand some of the capabilities of the lua api. What if I wanted to scale down the world (in a way that cubes appear smaller). Is there a way to easily do this? Moving the camera and playing with fov is a bit weird and also limited. |
22:09 |
dyamon |
also I can't really find a way to "force" the third person view |

no, there's no way in the API to scale down the world, and no way to set a view |
22:32 |

still, there is a 2D subgame and a hexagonal subgame example. I'd have to look into the code, but unless they are just clever hacks something has to be possible! |

how to make a wchar_t * to a core::stringw? |

never mind, i found a way |

I'm thinking it would be fun to have a game like a dungeon crawler. Like Pixel Dungeon style (not Nethack... that would take 30+ years) |
22:51 |
leo_rockway |
does anything like that exist? |

dyamon: local player = minetest.get_player_by_name("whoever");player:set_eye_offset(vector.new(0,50,0),vector.new(0,0,0));player:set_physics_override({speed=6});player:set_properties({collisionbox={-2,-0.5,-2,2,5.5,2},visual_size={x=6,y=6}}) |

Tweak values to taste. |
22:52 |
leo_rockway |
I haven't done anything with map generation, but it would be a fun exercise... |
22:54 |

correlation? I don't think so. |

hello |

cheapie: thanks, this feels a bit weird but is a good start, also while you can freely move the eye_offset in first person, it seems like there is a limit for the third person |

Question? I installed the Flatpak version of Minetest. How do I set it up to be a dedicated Minetest server? |
23:26 |
leo_rockway |
it looks like: minetestserver --worldname $WORLDNAME |
23:26 |
leo_rockway |
you'd need to create the world first, apparently. |
23:26 |
leo_rockway |
you'd probably want to screen / tmux that. But that's up to you. |

"The idea of using application containers in GNOME was first proposed in 2013 by Lennart Poettering" that tells me everything I need to know... |

:) |
23:37 |
leo_rockway |
I'm not a fan of either Gnome or Poettering. |
23:37 |
skibur |
Yeah, Flatpak doesn't have a minetestserver binary. |
23:37 |
skibur |
just minetest |
23:38 |
skibur |
Hum.... |
23:41 |

Awesome! |
23:42 |
skibur |
leo_rockway, flatpak run net.minetest.Minetest --help is a start! |
23:42 |
skibur |
I'm running CentOS. |
23:44 |
leo_rockway |
is there a repo that has current Minetest? I'm guessing no. |
23:45 |
skibur |
nope |
23:45 |
leo_rockway |
compiling might not be that hard. |
23:45 |
leo_rockway |
I compile from git, but I use yaourt for that (I run Artic, an Arch fork) |
23:46 |
leo_rockway |
erm... AUR, not yaourt |
23:47 |
skibur |
True, but If I can get FP to server Minetest, that would be great. |
23:48 |
skibur |
Going to need to create a service for systemd |
23:48 |
skibur |
np |
23:49 |
skibur |
woah, CentOS 7 has minetest at version 0.4.16. :S |
23:51 |
Calinou |
skibur: the Flatpak contains only a client |

yeah |
23:52 |
skibur |
I just did |
23:52 |
skibur |
So the Flatpak is Client/Server? |
23:52 |
skibur |
Is there a Server only FP? |
