13:39 ANAND Greetings! How are chat commands executed from the terminal?
13:40 rubenwardy which terminal?
13:40 ANAND Ubuntu
13:40 rubenwardy lol
13:40 rubenwardy NCURSES is used as library to have nicer terminal I/O
13:40 rubenwardy and it then interprets the input and runs it similar to IRC
13:40 rubenwardy so you'll need to compile with NCURSES support
13:41 ANAND IIRC, ncurses was detected on my system
13:41 rubenwardy ~g ncurses
13:41 ShadowBot rubenwardy: ncurses - Wikipedia - ncurses (new curses) is a programming library providing an application programming interface (API) that allows the programmer to write text-based user interfaces in a terminal-independent manner. </l/?kh=-1&uddg=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FNcurses>, Announcing ncurses 6.1 - The GNU Operating System and the ... - The ncurses (new curses) library (7 more messages)
13:41 rubenwardy ah
13:41 rubenwardy *ncurses
13:41 rubenwardy then do minetestserver --terminal
13:41 rubenwardy and the rest of the args ofc
13:41 ANAND k, I'll try

13:45 ANAND hmm

18:59 Librism :P
18:59 Krock VS as in Visual Studio?
18:59 Player-2 i was just about to ask that
19:00 Krock also: what are you trying to open there? the source code?
19:00 Librism Yeah
19:00 Player-2 to which my reply would be "not me, as i'm on linux"
19:00 Librism So any ideas Krock
19:01 Librism Server died again
19:01 Librism didnt it
19:02 Krock Librism, install and open cmake-gui (console window), then join the build directory and open the generated project file there
19:02 Librism cmake-gui
19:02 Librism i have the source of cmake
19:02 Krock yes, from cmake
19:02 Librism is it in there
19:02 Krock no, you'll need the executable of cmake, not the source
19:02 Krock +code.
19:03 Librism uhmm
19:03 Librism any way you could send me the download link so i dont download some other random thing
19:03 Librism ive allready downloaded like 30+ files trying to get it to work
19:03 Librism xD
19:03 Krock https://dev.minetest.net/Compiling_Minetest#Compiling_on_Windows
19:03 Krock we have a wiki for that
19:04 Librism Yeah but theres like 87 downloads on that page
19:04 Librism xD
19:05 Librism cmake-3.11.3.zip?
19:05 Krock if you've already got MSVC (msbuild.exe to be precise), then you'll only need cmake, irrlicht and zlib for the basic stuff
19:06 Librism which one do i get on the cmake page?
19:06 Krock Librism, Ctrl + F on that page, then enter "Binary distributions" and scroll a bit down
19:06 Krock where it says "installer"
19:06 Krock for you both versionx, x64 and x86 will work
19:06 Librism The msi right
19:07 Krock no, the .foo.baz archive
19:07 Librism I dont see any .foo.baz
19:07 Librism xD
19:07 Librism Or you just joking with me
19:08 Librism There isnt a .foo.baz
19:08 Librism Its the MSI isnt it...
19:08 Player-2 foo.baz is a common name for an example file that you ideally already know the name of
19:09 Krock Congratulations, Player-2! You've gained 30 EXP and levelled up to level 4
19:09 Librism What the
19:10 Player-2 Krock i know full well that waking up was a mistake today lol
19:10 Librism erm
19:10 Librism a
19:10 Librism god
19:10 Krock Player-2, no, it wasn't! You gained EXP and that's definitely helpful for your Minetest career :P
19:11 Player-2 hahahah
19:11 Krock Librism, yes. the .msi installer file. Nothing much you can do wrong there
19:11 serp no wait
19:12 Krock Librism, for the libraries openal, irrlicht, vorbis, ogg, etc .. you'll need the source code or a pre-built version for the system you're on
19:13 Librism ;p
19:13 Librism so no more downloads other than cmake
19:14 Librism ogg and all that is already there?
19:14 Krock where? definitely not bundled with Minetest.
19:14 Librism xD so i have to download all that?
19:15 Krock please read my messages carefully. for the minimal build you'll only need a few of them and not the entire list
19:15 Krock and for Win32 builds there are already pre-compiled libraries available
19:16 Krock there you could download the entire archive, unzip and done.
19:16 Krock up to you how you're going to build this stuff
19:17 Librism ok
19:17 Librism sounds good ill do it later
19:17 Librism thanks :)

19:35 andirc8000 I'm sorry for annoying again with my ideas of an ability to purge mapgen generated db entries (as in vs. player-placed nodes) (for backup/disk space minimization purposes) but how difficult would it be to make mt create two sqlite db files for each mt 'world': one for storing mapgen-generated nodes and the other for storing player-placed/removed nodes (so one could easily delete mapgen sqlite file before
19:36 andirc8000 backup)
19:40 Krock double trouble
19:40 Krock and you forgot the rollback database
19:42 andirc8000 isnt mapgen nodes are always deterministic (per seed number) (?)
19:43 Krock in theory yes. but then there are changes in the mapgen (bugfixes), new biomes, new decorations or manual noise adjustments of a generated world
19:44 Krock also leftovers and additional nodes from plantlife/-alike mods
19:45 Stix_ just realized i never logged out xD
19:46 Krock Stix_, sail away!
19:47 andirc8000 well, user can always choose *not* to delete mapgen dbfile before backup (and also mod-inspired nodes could also be placed into player-db sqlite file, (ok plants lbms? (or am I missing something huge?))

19:54 Stix i can seem to find the stabler version, only the most recent master branch
19:54 Krock if you want 0.4.17.1
19:54 Stix ahh kk
19:55 Krock same additional argument for minetest_game. note that "--depth 10" would reduce the download time and consumed space on your drive
19:56 Stix wait they dont compile together? o_O
19:56 Stix sry im just new to all of this
19:57 paramat mapgen is not entirely deterministic
19:57 Krock specify "they dont compile"
19:57 paramat depends on the order of mapchunk generation
19:57 Stix @Krick i mean: dont minetest engine and game come in the same pakage and therefore are compiled together?
19:58 Stix woops i meant @Krock
19:58 Krock Stix, type "Kro" and then press Tab to autocomplete
19:58 Stix oh wow it works!
19:58 Krock minetest_game is a game, not the minetest engine. thus means it's entirely Lua and does not require any compiling

So, say 30-40 minetest worlds, and it's like 100+mb.
20:07 Stix hmmm
20:07 lumberJ depending on how you compiled you can either put mt_game in .minetest/games/ or put it in the minetest folder where you compiled under /games/
20:07 Krock PS: there's a dummy backend, perfectly suited for experiments
20:08 Stix oh i just realized i just plopped minetest game into minetest folder not games directory
20:08 lumberJ yeah, that should fix it
20:10 Stix can i open minetest without a menu? the menu icon just opens 0.5 i compiled last night
20:10 BillyS joined #minetest
20:10 lumberJ you'll need a new menu icon for stable
20:10 Librism Krock
20:11 Librism You still here?
20:11 lumberJ or you can launch it with terminal, Stix
20:11 Krock no
20:11 Librism You have discord Krock?
20:11 Stix @Krock how do i do that?
20:11 lumberJ Stix : /path/to/minetest/bin/minetest
20:11 Krock Librism, this time a honest "no"
20:11 Krock Stix, cd ./bin && ./minetest
20:12 Krock like lumberJ said. start it from the terminal
20:12 Krock unless you meant starting it without the *mainmenu*
20:12 Stix BTW: whats the point of the first_join password verification
20:12 Stix oh and thx a lot
20:12 Librism xD
20:12 Librism aight
20:13 Krock the verification is to ensure you're using the right password to *create a new* account. If it appears on a server where you've already been to, then it's maybe a trap
20:13 Stix ah kk
20:14 Stix i put this in the terminal, doesnt work: /home/xubuntu/Downloads/minetest/bin/minetest
20:14 Krock ah. it doesn't work. tells me much about what's wrong. /s
20:14 Stix oh
20:15 Stix well /home/xubuntu/Downloads/minetest is the path to minetest and i added /bin/minetest to the end of that like lumberj said
20:15 lumberJ thats where you compiled it Stix?
20:16 Krock doesn't matter as long there's builtin
20:16 lumberJ yeah i know, just want to make sure he didn't copy it elsewhere
20:16 lumberJ before compiling
20:16 Stix yes thats where i put it
20:16 Krock or doesn't matter at all when it's a system wide build by accident
20:16 Stix what do you mean theres builtin?
20:16 lumberJ did you get any message back?
20:16 Stix hold on
20:17 Krock if the message is longer than three lines PLEASE paste it to PASTEBIN
20:17 lumberJ :) always a good idea
20:17 Stix i got this: bash: /home/xubuntu/Downloads/minetest/bin/minetest: No such file or directory
20:17 Krock so you didn't copy it there
20:18 lumberJ can you cd into that /bin/ directory?
20:18 Stix ill try
20:19 Stix bash: cd: /home/xubuntu/Downloads/minetest/bin/minetest: No such file or directory :/
20:19 lumberJ yeah so your path must not be right
20:19 lumberJ maybe find it in thunar first and make sure its where you think it is
20:20 Stix whats thunar?
20:20 Krock your file explorer
20:20 Stix also i can see the file when i got to that directory
20:20 lumberJ ah wait
20:20 lumberJ cd to bin not to minetest
20:20 lumberJ you cant cd to the file itself
20:21 Stix rlly?
20:21 Stix hmm
20:21 moonshield joined #minetest
20:21 lumberJ so: cd ~/Downloads/minetest/bin
20:21 lumberJ yes its not a directory
20:21 Stix so i do: cd /bin/minetest?
20:22 lumberJ cd ~/Downloads/minetest/bin
20:22 Krock Stix, crash course. cd /dir joins an absolute path. cd ./dir joins the directory relatively to your current directory (denoted with .)
20:22 lumberJ then try ./minetest
20:23 citiesMatrix joined #minetest
20:25 AlexYst joined #minetest
20:25 Stix oki since im stupid im google this
20:25 Stix google bin
20:26 lumberJ bin is just a directory insided the minetest directory
20:27 citiesMatrix hi
20:28 lumberJ hello cities
20:28 Stix if bin is inside minetest then why is bin the first "excutable" in the prompt line?
20:29 citiesMatrix do you mind telling me what my nick is displaying as
20:29 citiesMatrix not used to this matrix bridge
20:29 lumberJ citiesMatrix
20:29 Krock hello matrix citiesMatrix
20:30 Stix cities matrix
20:30 Librism reeeeeee
20:30 citiesMatrix wonderful....
20:33 cities oh well dont know how to change it
20:34 lumberJ you just did
20:34 cities oh. it just didn't tell me it did.
20:34 cities interesting
20:34 lumberJ it told us :D
20:35 thoughtjigs left #minetest
20:35 Stix yeah it did
20:35 cities :)
20:35 Stix i think ill just wait for the geek in the family to show me how to use bin xF
20:35 Stix *xD
20:35 lumberJ Stix: cd ~/Downloads/minetest/bin
20:36 Stix tried dat
20:36 lumberJ and are you in bin directory after that?
20:36 Stix do i need to be a a certain directory first?
20:36 lumberJ no the ~ makes it not matter
20:36 cities Ever used the Riot.im client?
20:36 Stix im at the bin directory atm: /Downloads/minetest/builtin
20:36 cities It’s a little over my head
20:37 Stix oki without tilda still doesnt work
20:38 lumberJ i think you are making this more complicated. either the directory isn't where you say it is or you are not typing exactly as I am
20:38 lumberJ you shouldn't be in the builtin directory if you did: cd ~/Downloads/minetest/bin
20:39 lumberJ if nothing happens after that, then you should be in the bin directory
20:39 Stix i did "cd /home/xubuntu/Downloads/minetest/builtin
20:39 Stix doesnt bin = builtin?
20:39 lumberJ no
20:39 lumberJ the minetest executable is inside the minetest/bin directory
20:40 Stix theres only builtin not bin, i just checked the filesystem
20:42 lumberJ possibly the compile process didn't succeed?
20:42 Stix but everything else is there....
20:43 lumberJ all of that is downloaded. i think the /bin/minetest executable is just created after everything compiles
20:43 Stix oh
20:43 lumberJ when you compile did you see it get to 100% in the terminal?
20:43 Stix i wonder why it doesnt appear in menu
20:43 Stix let me check
20:44 Stix yes 100%
20:44 lumberJ it wouldn't add to the menu automatically when compiling
20:44 lumberJ if you mean the whisker menu
20:45 Stix yes whisker menu
20:46 Stix it automatically added whisker menu when compiling 0.5-dev
20:47 lumberJ the one-line script handled it probably
20:47 Stix oh
20:48 lumberJ idk, but that would be my guess. i've never compiled minetest and had it show up in my menu automatically though
20:48 lumberJ is the ppa for stable not up to date yet? is that why you are compiling?
20:49 Stix yes
20:49 Stix the version it has is 0.4.13
20:50 lumberJ the ppa? no
20:50 lumberJ the default repo maybe
20:50 lumberJ https://launchpad.net/~minetestdevs/+archive/ubuntu/stable
20:50 lumberJ not sure if that includes the 0.4.17.1 fixes though
20:50 rubenwardy yay xubuntu
20:51 rubenwardy well no
20:51 rubenwardy yay xfce
20:51 lumberJ xubuntu not all bad
20:51 lumberJ if you have to be on something ubuntu based
20:51 lumberJ :)
20:51 Stix huh, how do i use that
20:52 lumberJ the directions are on the link
20:52 rubenwardy there's 3 command line instructions
20:52 lumberJ under "Adding this PPA
20:52 lumberJ after you run those do: sudo apt-get install minetest
20:53 Stix ah kk i see it
20:53 Stix thx
20:53 lumberJ you might want to remove minetest 0.4.13 if its on your system though. not sure if it will update automatically or just cause system confusion
20:55 Stix oki its working
20:57 rubenwardy it will update proper
20:57 rubenwardy well
20:57 Stix i got this: update-rc.d: error: insserv rejected the script header dpkg: error processing package cryptsetup (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of ubiquity: ubiquity depends on cryptsetup; however: Package cryptsetup is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing package ubiquity (--configure): dependency problems - leaving un
20:57 rubenwardy unless there's different package names
20:57 lumberJ that'd be when its good to use pastebin^
20:58 Stix whats pastebin?
20:59 lumberJ a website to post long strings of text so you don't spam up the chat
21:01 Stix so like this?: https://pastebin.com/EHj3aJAn
21:01 lumberJ yes
21:02 lumberJ is minetest updated in your menu now
21:03 lumberJ i dont think that error is from minetest
21:03 Stix it brings up 0.5
21:04 lumberJ did you compile 0.5 or use the daily ppa?
21:05 Stix daily ppa thing you linked
21:05 Stix im stupid theres builds for different os versions
21:05 Stix actually u cant pick
21:05 Stix i guess it does auto
21:06 lumberJ its automatic
21:07 lumberJ i didnt link the daily builds
21:07 Stix kk
21:08 lumberJ but if you previously installed 0.5 with the daily-builds ppa, 0.4.17 won't install from ppa
21:09 lumberJ if you used the one-line script though, i don't really know what the problem would be
21:10 Stix i used this to get 0.5: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=3837
21:10 lumberJ i always just compile from the directions in the game and never have problems
21:13 paramat joined #minetest
21:14 lumberJ Stix, what happens if you type: minetest --version
21:14 lumberJ in terminal
21:15 Stix Minetest 0.5.0-dev-18f1ede
21:16 lumberJ seems like theres some sort of conflict with having both versions i guess
21:16 lumberJ do you need minetest 0.5.0 now?
21:16 Stix no
21:16 Stix i dont
21:17 Stix i was just testing it out
21:19 lumberJ i'm not super versed in make but if you go to ~/minetest and do make uninstall you might be able to get it uninstalled properly
21:19 Stix "make uninstall"?
21:20 lumberJ you could try that. as i said i'm not versed in uninstalling that way so i'm not sure it will work
21:20 Unit193 joined #minetest
21:20 Stix kk
21:20 lumberJ you may just have to delete the 0.5.0 directory and maybe purge minetest with apt will work
21:21 lumberJ then reinstall and hopefully you will get the version from the ppa
21:24 lumberJ if the ppa did install correctly you should see minetest in /usr/share/minetest i believe
21:24 lumberJ but you will still want to clean up the 0.5.0 stuff so it launches properly
21:25 lumberJ the lesson here is don't run scripts if you don't understand exactly what they are doing :P
21:26 Stix *** No rule to make target 'uninstall'. Stop.
21:27 lumberJ yeah, i was afraid of that
21:28 Stix hmm i survived lava dunking just now lol
21:28 lumberJ maybe sudo make uninstall
21:28 Stix im multitasking mining and irc'ing xD
21:28 lumberJ but it probably just doesn't have an uninstall script
21:28 Stix that doesnt work either
21:30 lumberJ well stack overflow has some other advice but i think its a bit beyond the scope of trying to explain here and not really in the realm of my knowledge
21:30 lumberJ i would maybe suggest trying to sudo apt-get remove --purge minetest
21:31 lumberJ if that seems to work, delete the minetest folder with 0.5.0 and then try to reinstall
21:31 Stix oki
21:31 lumberJ but since it wasn't installed with apt, i can't guarantee anything
21:31 Stix have you noticed that the lighting in 0.5 is way smoother?
21:32 lumberJ hmm, not really but i haven't played it much.
21:32 Stix i wonder what they changed
21:32 lumberJ i test stuff on it but it crashes too much to play for me
21:34 Stix its never crashed on me sofar

22:11 mazes_80 Calinou: I sent updated wiki french translation via pastebin on this channel yesterday, for one modification, it's okay. But for more of them, seems a bit unconvenient. So as I have now more of them to update, I wa told to ask for a wiki user account.
