hey rubenwardy. you are riht the fps is a broblem :( my cpu strugles with the recording. I am not sure if speeding up is realy the best solution. I personaly like "slow" videos. If i am done with a part of the tutorial i just skip a few seconds and continue watching. |

I like watching tutorials at 1.5 to 2x speed; skipping = accidentally missing |
00:15 |
Calinou |
danSNDBX: you need a decent machine for recording smooth videos, sorry :P |
00:15 |
Calinou |
many people like 60 FPS videos today, which makes the problem worse |
00:15 |
Calinou |
you can use GPU-based encoding if you have a dedicated graphics card |
00:15 |
Calinou |
(OBS supports NVENC) |
00:15 |
danSNDBX |
I use OBS |
00:17 |
danSNDBX |
well... for your eye the difference between 30 and 60 fps is pretty small... - the vid is recorded with 30 fps, but it looks a lot less cause of CPU. It also changes during the video depending on for e.g. which direction I look at (and how many trees are in that direction) |
00:18 |
Calinou |
it is not pretty small, it's pretty noticeable in faster games |
00:18 |
swift110 |
Astrobe, ok me too |
00:18 |
Calinou |
but it's noticeable even if looking at a slow game or a desktop screencastr |

I play in 30fps #potato-master-race |
00:19 |
danSNDBX |
@maybedragon u can do that in your personal YT settings. Watching YT videos faster is actually very easy possible for everyone |
00:19 |
MaybeDragon |
danSNDBX: yea, right, but only maximal 2x in the default youtube player |
00:19 |
danSNDBX |
so i think makeing a slow vid is "ok" since everyone can watch it in 1.5x or2x speed with only two clicks |
00:20 |
danSNDBX |
well, most people become sick at 16x :D |

If everyone is supposed to play it in 2x speed than the default is definitely too low |
00:22 |

Ahh, don't mind me; I normally don't watch building videos; irrelevant feedback |
00:24 |
danSNDBX |
no, it helps a lot, thank you for your opinion! |
00:25 |

I try to work on the FPS thing but i think i need a better machine :( |

and i wrote down the speeding up thing. i am not sure about it (the video is only 4 mins at all) but i will keep it in mind. Maybe speeding up is something for bigger projects (longer videos) |
00:42 |
MaybeDragon |
danSNDBX: You might also do both? Mainly do your videos in the speed you like; but also build small .gifs out of them in a very high time lapse? |
00:44 |
danSNDBX |
maybedragon that sounds like an idea. but do you think it works to publish the sam vid in two different speeds? |
00:46 |
MaybeDragon |
Idk; But if I'd watch lots of posts on FB (or whatever) I wouldn't stop to watch 4mins of building. But a 30s time lapse might make me interested in more |

viaken: maybe spend some time on servers using different mods to get an idea? |
18:47 |
Shara |
It's often a quicker way to check mods in action than setting them up yourself |
18:48 |
Raven262 |
Thats one way, but smart server owners won't use mods that don't require too much resources. |
18:48 |
Raven262 |
Or many mods that together do. |
18:48 |
Shara |
Raven262: of course not, but you can't start checking if mods you want are efficient until you know what mods you want |
18:49 |
Raven262 |
Agreed. One gets much more ideas if they see what mods there are. |
18:55 |
danSNDBX |
i actually prefer less mods. |
18:55 |
danSNDBX |
dont get me wrong, there are a few realy amazing mods I enjoy |
18:55 |
rubenwardy |
more mods the better! |
18:56 |
danSNDBX |
but i feel like we didnt even reach the potential of the basic game instead we rush servers with a lot (of unfinished) mods |
18:56 |
Shara |
danSNDBX: considering minetest_game really is just mods anyway... |
18:57 |
rubenwardy |
servers end up making their own subgames essentially |
18:57 |
rubenwardy |
imo, the power of Minetest isn't with mods |
18:57 |

it's the subgames |

18:57 |

most mods will have some bugs that need fixing, which more server owners contributed the fixes back |

well minetest is a field for creativity. even without mods |

Hmm, you don't seem to want people leaving spawn either |

I use double dot ellipses.. when I'm inserting a non-grammatical pause in a sentence that doesn't commit to a full pause. :P |

hi, I am trying to use core.request_insecure_environment but I have nil. I would like to use FFI. |
20:48 |
t20kdc |
quater: I think you have to add your mod to a whitelist or something in the config, to get anything but nil. |
20:48 |
quater |
I did it |
20:49 |
quater |
secure.trusted_mods ? |
20:53 |
t20kdc |
quater: that should be the right setting. when are you calling request_insecure_environment? |
20:56 |
quater |
https://pastebin.com/f1ZdpZ0C |
20:57 |
t20kdc |
ah, you're trying to request it from a CSM? |
20:57 |
quater |
in test.lua: print('Hello world !') |
20:57 |
quater |
yes |
20:59 |
t20kdc |
request_insecure_environment isn't actually documented as a function available to CSM, apparently |

Last time I checked, status on that was: "You basically have to try and autodetect Lua 5.3 or failing that use your own implementation of bitops." *sighs* |
21:25 |
rubenwardy |
quater, the insecure environment isn't and won't ever be available to CSM |
21:29 |
quater |
there is no way to use/load a external library, bit32 completed lua5.2 |
21:31 |
t20kdc |
The solution should probably be that Minetest should have a reliable bitops library in the first place... |
21:31 |
t20kdc |
...since even with bit32 access, mod devs need to handle 4 cases, including no native bit library at all. |
21:32 |
t20kdc |
1. Lua5.1 (no bit lib, AAAA), 2. Lua 5.2, 3. Lua 5.3, 4. LuaJIT |

Writing code to do formspec layout is so... Time consuming and error prone. :P |
21:46 |
Cornelia |
I had good velocity on the project till I hit this point. :P |
21:47 |
t20kdc |
slots are a weird unit to work with, because it's not actually slots, it's slots + spacing... |
21:50 |
Cornelia |
*eyes narrow* |
21:50 |
Cornelia |
I hope not.. |
21:50 |
Cornelia |
Because I've added my own spacing... |
21:52 |
t20kdc |
With my usual luck regarding formspec layout, I'll probably turn out to be wrong. |
21:52 |
Cornelia |
No.. no.. |
21:53 |
Cornelia |
It looks like you're right.. |
21:53 |
Cornelia |
I'm using minetest-testbox to test random formspec code |
21:54 |
Cornelia |
It could just be the "widgets" themselves add spacing.. |
21:54 |
Cornelia |
I.e. image_button |
21:55 |
Cornelia |
It looks like they do... |
21:55 |
t20kdc |
Or it could be a mixture of both. Like, presumably a slot is a set amount of pixels, and the assumption is that you lay things out on a grid. |
21:55 |
Cornelia |
Which is.. very... Disappointing.. |
21:55 |
Cornelia |
Because the system I've been building up assumed that wasn't the case... |
21:55 |
t20kdc |
So everything's spaced out to add margins. But then of course that leads to an awful mess, so you then have to remove those margins again... |
21:55 |
Cornelia |
And I had to add the spacing myself if I wanted it. |
21:56 |
Cornelia |
I'm about to put this formspec heavy mod on indefinite hiatus... |
21:56 |
Cornelia |
As going back to restructure that formspec code does not feel like fun.. |
21:57 |
t20kdc |
Well, how are you generating your formspecs? |
21:57 |
Cornelia |
That or I may wait until the formspec replacement shows up.. O don't think I can handle this. :P |
21:58 |
t20kdc |
...there's a formspec replacement showing up? |
21:58 |

22:27 |

thanks guys |
22:28 |
Shara |
sameyepatch: if on computer, press f5 and check the text at the top of the screen to easily get item names |
22:29 |
sameyepatch |
Shara: hm, F5 doesn't seem to work in my case |
22:30 |
sameyepatch |
it says cannot give empty item, do I need to do something else? it's a tool (a pickaxe) so I think it only works with crafting materials? |
22:31 |
Shara |
f5 would only give you the names of placed nodes, so yes |
22:31 |
Shara |
You'll probably need to check the mod the item is in to find the name |

okay, I'll check that out |
