Inside register_on_dignode Im trying: local inv = digger:get_inventory() local drop = minetest.get_node_drops(oldnode.name, nil)[1] if inv:remove_item(drop,1) then minetest.set_node(pos,oldnode) end . while set_node get executed, drop isnt removed from inventory |

is Windows designed to get laggier over time, so you have to restart, causing windows updates? |

yes |
08:10 |
sy |
how else would they convince you updates make a difference |
08:10 |
rdococ |
heh |
08:11 |
rdococ |
of course, I could just disable windows update. then again, I did that on my mother's laptop (set it to "don't even download updates"), and by the looks of it, it was still doing something related to updates as I restarted it |

in actuality, though, all it's doing is tempting me to switch to linux faster than I already planned on doing |
08:13 |

or, rather, back to linux |
08:19 |

so maybe windows should stop slowing down in an attempt to trick me |

rdococ, Windows OS slows down over time because it uses the registry system which is utterly stupid and I'm glad Linux doesn't |
10:06 |
IhrFussel |
Maybe the registry doesn't slow it down in a matter of days, but as you install and uninstall lots of software the registry will be full of crap you don't need |

Windows slowdowns over time were greatly reduced as of Windows 8/10 |
10:54 |
Calinou |
it's barely noticeable now, especially on a SSD |
10:54 |
Calinou |
so, you don't quite need to reinstall every 6 months :) |
10:54 |
Calinou |
IhrFussel: also, there's software for cleaning the registry, if you really need to |
10:55 |
Calinou |
but on modern hardware, you don't need to |
10:57 |
IhrFussel |
Calinou, AFAIK Windows still uses the crappy registry system...as long as it does it will never be as good as Linux in that regard |
10:58 |
|
Fritigern joined #minetest |

To install 3rd party software to clean up a stupid system part is no solution IMO |
11:01 |
Calinou |
IhrFussel: it uses the registry still |
11:01 |
Calinou |
also, the registry system isn't bad per se, though it might be slow |
11:01 |
Calinou |
Linux has many flaws in the management of configuration and settings, too |
11:03 |
IhrFussel |
Calinou, Linux does not EVER slow down...if it does you did something wrong |
11:03 |
Calinou |
I think it can |
11:04 |
IhrFussel |
Ubuntu doesn't I use it since 3 years |
11:05 |
IhrFussel |
Like I said..if it does, you changed something in the system you shouldn't change |
11:06 |
IhrFussel |
Or you probably forget to purge software you don't need anymore...some people only use "remove" which doesn't touch config files |
11:06 |
Calinou |
anyway, on modern hardware and software, the Windows slowdown isn't noticeable |
11:06 |
Calinou |
(it doesn't have to be high-end – as long as you have a SSD and a non-crappy CPU, it's good) |
11:08 |
IhrFussel |
Calinou, if you say so^^ ... what about RAM management? Does Windows not claim ~ 50% of your RAM for the OS anymore? |
11:10 |
IhrFussel |
I've got 8 GB RAM now and Linux let's me use ~ 7 of them ... back when I had Win 7 I had 1 GB RAM and could only use ~ 400 MB for myself |
11:12 |
IhrFussel |
On my older PC with 768 MB RAM I had Xubuntu 16.04 and the OS only claimed 30% ... that's what I call efficient |
11:12 |
Calinou |
IhrFussel: unused RAM is wasted RAM :) |
11:13 |
Calinou |
http://www.linuxatemyram.com/ |
11:13 |
Calinou |
is also for Windows |
11:13 |

Fritigern joined #minetest |

Calinou, No what I mean is I didn't have more than 50% RAM for my personal use..Windows "stole" 50% |
11:15 |
|
Wuzzy joined #minetest |
11:15 |
IhrFussel |
And as soon as I tried to load a program that used than my 50% the OS completely slowed down |
11:15 |
IhrFussel |
used more* |
11:17 |
IhrFussel |
Even MS accepts that some parts of Linux are just better designed, so they added the Bash shell for example |
11:18 |
IhrFussel |
Windows still looks better, looks more modern, gets more support and is overall more popular...but the Linux OS does many things better under the hood and that's a fact |
11:18 |
Calinou |
IhrFussel: how much RAM did you have? |
11:18 |
Calinou |
you want 8 GB of RAM on Windows 10, really |
11:18 |
Calinou |
4 GB isn't great today, like it or not |
11:19 |
Calinou |
(even on Linux, if you use GNOME or KDE) |
11:19 |
IhrFussel |
I had 1 GB with Win 7 and 768 MB with Xubuntu 16.04 ... the latter worked better |
11:20 |
IhrFussel |
Xubuntu works very fast with 768 MB..trust me |
11:20 |
asl97 |
Off topic much? anyway, you can't really compare linux (kernel) and windows as a whole, linux with other software as a whole aren't perfect, there a numbers parts which does slow down overtime until something is done every now and then. |
11:20 |
asl97 |
The linux intergration is just a stupid pr stuff to try to pull linux users to windows, I doubt most windows user would even know about it, let alone uses it. |
11:20 |
IhrFussel |
Maybe you wait 1 or 2 secs before the browser opens, but it's faster than any Windows |
11:22 |
IhrFussel |
asl97, I know that "Linux" isn't one defined OS... the performance depends on DE, software installed, kernel features enabled/disabled...and much more |
11:22 |
IhrFussel |
But Linux is more open and offers more options...Windows doesn't even let you touch their "kernel" |
