https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/4563 - ._., how do people manage to make their game slower by enabling mip-mapping |
04:54 |
Calinou |
Quake 3 enabled mip-mapping by default and uses way higher-resolution textures |
04:54 |
Calinou |
we're not even talking about anisotropic filtering |
04:54 |
Calinou |
and by the way, mip-mapping is known to *increase* performance |

i'm experiencing two weird issues with trees (possibly related to each other) |
13:05 |
onlyonemac |
firstly, there's a small area (approximately 3x5 blocks) behind my house where the leaves never decay |
13:06 |
onlyonemac |
secondly, sometimes when the leaves decay they leave a dark "shadow" on the ground underneath which doesn't seem to go away |
13:08 |

on the first point; do you have a wood featuring any tree nodes? |
13:12 |
everamzah |
only the second point, search a mod called 'mapfix', i think it's https://github.com/minetest-mods/mapfix |
13:12 |
everamzah |
there's lighting bugs galore |
13:13 |
onlyonemac |
everamzah: no there are no trees touching or anywhere near the leaves. I cut down all the trees in my garden and the leaves remain. The only nearby trees are the one on the other side of my house and a few on the other side of the fence (about 3 blocks from the fence, and my trees are about 3 blocks in from the fence) |
13:13 |
everamzah |
and it doesn't matter whether it's a stock minetest game, or some mod -- they're present in both. anytime i've used saplings (and i have never used moretrees), i've gotten lighting bugs somewhere. same applies to fire, but i don't know how related. |

I'm not here to announce the release of my mod; instead I have to ask something important, but not directly regarding the internals of mods... |
14:56 |
segfault22 |
Is it wrong to go play Minecraft-ForgeModLoader w/ too many mods and wait for Minetest to "get better", when I have been telling people that I'm working on a big mod for Minetest that several people are interested in? |

you're not obligated to mod for anyone |

but isn't it dishonest, since I said I would release it soon? |
15:04 |
segfault22 |
There's this guy GreenDimond who is interested in the mod, and the idea that I may start a server someday soon... but if I tell him that I left for a while to play Minecraft while I "wait for Minetest to get better", he may think it's wrong, and others may as well... |

Hello |
19:32 |
Krock |
hi |
19:32 |
Fritz01 |
I've noticed that installing minetest from "sudo apt-get install minetest" takes around 9000kb from the hard disk. But compiling the source code tooks something like 200Mb! (dependecies included) How this can be possible??? |
19:33 |
Calinou |
Fritz01: apt-get downloads *binary* packages, not source code |
19:34 |
Calinou |
it does not compile anything on your machine |
19:34 |
est31 |
also, stuff gets statically linked |
19:34 |
est31 |
not dynamically |
19:34 |
|
rubenwardy joined #minetest |

staticaly linked? |
19:34 |
Fritz01 |
statically* |
19:35 |
Fritz01 |
what does it mean? |
19:36 |
codehero |
it stuffs every lib in the binary |
19:37 |
codehero |
rather than using system libs that are already installed |

LNJ2GO joined #minetest |

est31: I'm quite sure Debian packages are dynamically-linked |
19:38 |
Calinou |
whereas source code includes some in-tree libraries |
19:38 |
Calinou |
which are also compiled |
19:38 |
est31 |
yes |
19:38 |
est31 |
that's what I meant |
19:39 |
est31 |
if sqlite or lua isnt found on the system, the compile process links it in statically |
19:39 |
est31 |
maybe it even defaults to not doing a check at all, i'm not sure |
19:40 |
Fritz01 |
Thanks, but my question still stand: engine and minetest_game (compiled): 12 Mb / download from "apt-get" 9000Kb |
19:40 |
Calinou |
.deb packages are also compressed |
19:40 |
Calinou |
(LZMA2, I think, basically .tar.xz) |
19:40 |
Fritz01 |
isn't it impossible? |
19:40 |
est31 |
Fritz01, what exactly do you compare? |
19:40 |
Calinou |
no, all .deb packages you download are compressed |
19:40 |
est31 |
the executable files? |
19:41 |
Fritz01 |
all the engine (compiled) plus minetest_game |
19:41 |

with the download from "apt-get" |

est31 |
you will notice that the self compiled one contains less lines |
20:01 |
sfan5 |
maybe, maybe not |
20:01 |
sfan5 |
est31: debian maintainers obsess over dynamically linking everything, you won |
20:02 |
sfan5 |
't find anything statically linked when there is no need |
20:03 |
sfan5 |
also turns out that fedora is not missing minetest_game |
20:05 |
Fritz01 |
Are you saying that for the same game its possible to have different files size? |
20:06 |
sfan5 |
yes |
20:06 |
Fritz01 |
what? |
20:06 |
Fritz01 |
so the compiled MT has got useless libs? |
20:06 |
sfan5 |
no |
20:07 |
sfan5 |
you are comparing the wrong sizes |
20:08 |
Fritz01 |
i'm comparing: size of the compiled MT (12Mb) / MT installed from terminal by apt-get install (9000kb) |
20:09 |
Fritz01 |
they must be the same |
20:09 |
Fritz01 |
but they aren't |
20:10 |
Krock |
either they're compressed on a different way or the latter one does not contain MTG |
20:10 |
Krock |
I assume they were both compiled with the same libs |
20:12 |
Fritz01 |
got it! the files downloaded from "apt-get install" are compressed |
20:12 |
Fritz01 |
well, that's a big compression |
20:15 |
Fritz01 |
Which are the size of the engine (only binary)? |

There's a free license that save software from scam (fork with ads)? |
20:25 |
Krock |
not that I'm aware of. tldrlegal.com does not have a keyword for filtering |
20:31 |
nore |
Fritz01: probably not, because it would probably a non-free licence according to the FSF then |
20:31 |
redyellow |
cc by nc |
20:32 |
Fritz01 |
isn't that a non-free license? |
20:32 |
redyellow |
well yeah |
20:33 |
redyellow |
by your defition of free you can't stop forks with ads while using a free license |
20:33 |
nore |
the thing is, if your license prevents that, then it's not free |
20:33 |
Fritz01 |
with free i mean only open-source |
20:34 |
redyellow |
well cc by nc is open source |
20:34 |
nore |
^ exactly |
20:34 |
nore |
CC-BY-NC-SA would be a bit better for that though, but same idea |
20:34 |
nore |
any CC license containing NC would do what you want, but be non-free |
20:35 |
Fritz01 |
what do you mean with "free"? |
20:35 |
redyellow |
*according to the fsf |
