04:54 Calinou https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/4563 - ._., how do people manage to make their game slower by enabling mip-mapping
04:54 Calinou Quake 3 enabled mip-mapping by default and uses way higher-resolution textures
04:54 Calinou we're not even talking about anisotropic filtering
04:54 Calinou and by the way, mip-mapping is known to *increase* performance

10:53 _Megaf those are the powered ones
10:53 _Megaf and each yellow rail needs a powersource
10:56 johrpan _Megaf: Yeah, I thought if they are next to each other, one power source is enough.

11:20 thePalindrome Likely using an east coast bouncer
11:20 Not_a_Robot until Kubuntu changed it for Konversation
11:20 _Megaf thePalindrome: Higly customizable. Flexible, and the core and client are separated. So I run the core on my server, the core is connected to freenode. Clients I run on my phone, tablet, laptop. They sync to the core, core sends channels, backlog, nicks to client
11:21 _Megaf so everything synced

11:22 thePalindrome Pretty sure you can run a weechat instance on a server, then use weechat clients

13:04 onlyonemac i'm experiencing two weird issues with trees (possibly related to each other)
13:05 onlyonemac firstly, there's a small area (approximately 3x5 blocks) behind my house where the leaves never decay
13:06 onlyonemac secondly, sometimes when the leaves decay they leave a dark "shadow" on the ground underneath which doesn't seem to go away
13:08 Erthome joined #minetest
13:12 everamzah on the first point; do you have a wood featuring any tree nodes?
13:12 everamzah only the second point, search a mod called 'mapfix', i think it's https://github.com/minetest-mods/mapfix
13:12 everamzah there's lighting bugs galore
13:13 onlyonemac everamzah: no there are no trees touching or anywhere near the leaves. I cut down all the trees in my garden and the leaves remain. The only nearby trees are the one on the other side of my house and a few on the other side of the fence (about 3 blocks from the fence, and my trees are about 3 blocks in from the fence)
13:13 everamzah and it doesn't matter whether it's a stock minetest game, or some mod -- they're present in both.  anytime i've used saplings (and i have never used moretrees), i've gotten lighting bugs somewhere.  same applies to fire, but i don't know how related.
13:14 _Megaf [14:05:39] <onlyonemac> firstly, there's a small area (approximately 3x5 blocks) behind my house where the leaves never decay
13:14 everamzah if there are any nodes with group rating (group:tree) within 5(?) nodes, they won't decay
13:14 _Megaf is there any trunk/tree around?
13:14 _Megaf [14:06:14] <onlyonemac> secondly, sometimes when the leaves decay they leave a dark "shadow" on the ground underneath which doesn't seem to go away
13:14 _Megaf lighting bug
13:14 everamzah if you place a leave, it won't decay
13:14 everamzah i think it's only with sneak held down, or is it vice versa
13:14 everamzah vise?  haha
13:14 everamzah vice
13:15 onlyonemac _Megaf: the corners of my house are made of tree trunks, but they don't touch the leaves (i think in minecraft the leaves have to touch the trunk otherwise they'll decay)
13:15 onlyonemac everamzah: i haven't placed the leaves
13:15 everamzah well there you go, is it within 5 nodes?
13:15 everamzah because that would it explain it
13:15 _Megaf onlyonemac: no need to touch, just need to be nearby
13:15 onlyonemac everamzah: oh definately
13:15 everamzah isn't minetest great?
13:15 onlyonemac everamzah: like, 3 blocks from my house
13:15 * everamzah goes off to play single player
13:18 onlyonemac thanks for the mapfix thing; it works beautifully
13:18 onlyonemac (although hackish, i must admit)

14:54 segfault22 I'm not here to announce the release of my mod; instead I have to ask something important, but not directly regarding the internals of mods...
14:56 segfault22 Is it wrong to go play Minecraft-ForgeModLoader w/ too many mods and wait for Minetest to "get better", when I have been telling people that I'm working on a big mod for Minetest that several people are interested in?
14:56 segfault22 is it betrayal?
14:59 agaran _Megaf: crane was near bridge, yes
15:00 agaran from far end of it one could see it
15:01 segfault22 It is apparent that nobody here can answer my question,...
15:01 segfault22 Thus I should probably look within for the answer,... maybe the reason I asked was because that is how I feel about it, and I don't want others to think I'm a bad person for doing that...
15:02 Hijiri just b urself
15:02 Hijiri you're not obligated to mod for anyone
15:03 segfault22 but isn't it dishonest, since I said I would release it soon?
15:04 segfault22 There's this guy GreenDimond who is interested in the mod, and the idea that I may start a server someday soon... but if I tell him that I left for a while to play Minecraft while I "wait for Minetest to get better", he may think it's wrong, and others may as well...
15:04 segfault22 I know I don't have to make this mod, but I said I would

18:26 Krock commit 3c63c30 added this function (after stable 0.4.14 released)
18:27 Krock thus, the minetest_game master branch is not complatible with the older engine
18:27 Krock *compatible

18:28 sfan5 JoJo__: which linix distro do you use?
18:28 JoJo__ fedora
18:29 sfan5 so you installed this? https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/minetest
18:32 sfan5 well that's nice
18:32 sfan5 it looks like fedora is completely missing minetest_game
18:32 JoJo__ no, i have installed that website
18:33 JoJo__ minetest.net/downloads
18:33 sfan5 which one?
18:35 JoJo__ Source code  Get the latest stable or development source code from GitHub. You will probably want minetest_game as well. Put the game in your games directory.  See README.txt for details on how to compile.
18:36 sfan5 well in that case
18:36 sfan5 JoJo__: run this
18:37 sfan5 cd ~/minetest/games && mv minetest_game-master minetest_game && cd minetest_game && git checkout 0.4.14 && cd ../..

18:40 sfan5 nvm that won't work
18:41 sfan5 JoJo__: you need to download https://github.com/minetest/minetest_game/archive/0.4.14.tar.gz and replace minetest_game with that
18:45 JoJo__ working! Thanks sfan5

19:29 Fritz01 Hello
19:32 Krock hi
19:32 Fritz01 I've noticed that installing minetest from "sudo apt-get install minetest" takes around 9000kb from the hard disk. But compiling the source code tooks something like 200Mb! (dependecies included) How this can be possible???
19:33 Calinou Fritz01: apt-get downloads *binary* packages, not source code
19:34 Calinou it does not compile anything on your machine
19:34 est31 also, stuff gets statically linked
19:34 est31 not dynamically
19:34 rubenwardy joined #minetest
19:34 Fritz01 staticaly linked?
19:34 Fritz01 statically*
19:35 Fritz01 what does it mean?
19:36 codehero it stuffs every lib in the binary
19:37 codehero rather than using system libs that are already installed
19:37 LNJ2GO joined #minetest
19:37 Calinou est31: I'm quite sure Debian packages are dynamically-linked
19:38 Calinou whereas source code includes some in-tree libraries
19:38 Calinou which are also compiled
19:38 est31 yes
19:38 est31 that's what I meant
19:39 est31 if sqlite or lua isnt found on the system, the compile process links it in statically
19:39 est31 maybe it even defaults to not doing a check at all, i'm not sure
19:40 Fritz01 Thanks, but my question still stand: engine and minetest_game (compiled): 12 Mb / download from "apt-get" 9000Kb
19:40 Calinou .deb packages are also compressed
19:40 Calinou (LZMA2, I think, basically .tar.xz)
19:40 Fritz01 isn't it impossible?
19:40 est31 Fritz01, what exactly do you compare?
19:40 Calinou no, all .deb packages you download are compressed
19:40 est31 the executable files?
19:41 Fritz01 all the engine (compiled) plus minetest_game
19:41 Fritz01 with the download from "apt-get"
19:42 Fritz01 their size are different

20:00 est31 Fritz01, now run ldd on the compiled minetest executable and on /usr/games/minetest/
20:00 est31 like "ldd /usr/games/minetest"
20:00 grumble joined #minetest
20:00 est31 then compare the output of both
20:00 est31 you will notice that the self compiled one contains less lines
20:01 sfan5 maybe, maybe not
20:01 sfan5 est31: debian maintainers obsess over dynamically linking everything, you won
20:02 sfan5 't find anything statically linked when there is no need
20:03 sfan5 also turns out that fedora is not missing minetest_game
20:05 Fritz01 Are you saying that for the same game its possible to have different files size?
20:06 sfan5 yes
20:06 Fritz01 what?
20:06 Fritz01 so the compiled MT has got useless libs?
20:06 sfan5 no
20:07 sfan5 you are comparing the wrong sizes
20:08 Fritz01 i'm comparing: size of the compiled MT (12Mb) / MT installed from terminal by apt-get install (9000kb)
20:09 Fritz01 they must be the same
20:09 Fritz01 but they aren't
20:10 Krock either they're compressed on a different way or the latter one does not contain MTG
20:10 Krock I assume they were both compiled with the same libs
20:12 Fritz01 got it! the files downloaded from "apt-get install" are compressed
20:12 Fritz01 well, that's a big compression
20:15 Fritz01 Which are the size of the engine (only binary)?
20:16 Krock right click: properties
20:17 Fritz01 tried it. it says "4,9 Mb"; but isn't it too low?
20:18 Krock my winblows binary is 5.123 MiB
20:18 Krock sounds similar
20:21 Fritz01 Thanks for the help

20:22 MinetestBot Another satisfied customer. Next!
20:23 Fritz01 There's a free license that save software from scam (fork with ads)?
20:25 Krock not that I'm aware of. tldrlegal.com does not have a keyword for filtering
20:31 nore Fritz01: probably not, because it would probably a non-free licence according to the FSF then
20:31 redyellow cc by nc
20:32 Fritz01 isn't that a non-free license?
20:32 redyellow well yeah
20:33 redyellow by your defition of free you can't stop forks with ads while using a free license
20:33 nore the thing is, if your license prevents that, then it's not free
20:33 Fritz01 with free i mean only open-source
20:34 redyellow well cc by nc is open source
20:34 nore ^ exactly
20:34 nore CC-BY-NC-SA would be a bit better for that though, but same idea
20:34 nore any CC license containing NC would do what you want, but be non-free
20:35 Fritz01 what do you mean with "free"?
20:35 redyellow *according to the fsf
20:37 redyellow well I think you could in thoery add a clause to your license that forbids adding ads to the code
20:38 * redyellow is not a lawyer
20:39 Fritz01 anyways shouldn't MT License change to something like CC-BY-NC-SA?
20:39 Fritz01 that would prevent things like MultiCraft and the like
20:39 Krock look at the WTFPL license - it's a valid one (although it misses the warranty disclaimer part)
