according to the lua_api.txt docs, putting ${foo} in a formspec makes it retrieve foo from node metadata and interpolate it |

Hi guys I figured out how to run a dedicated server. However I would love to know how to keep it running in the background. When I manually start it in a terminal window then close the window, it stops the server. Whats the proper way to start the server? |
16:55 |
LinuxGuy2020 |
On Linux Mint |
16:55 |
LinuxGuy2020 |
I tried adding & to the end but that doesnt work apparently. |
16:56 |
ElectronLibre |
Use the command line to run the server. |
16:57 |
ElectronLibre |
Look for a binary file called "minetestserver", and its option. Then, launch `minetestserver <options> & disown` and you should be able to close the terminal window. If you want to keep it open, you can. |
16:57 |
LinuxGuy2020 |
Yeah but when I do that it hogs the terminal. Nothing else can be done after it. |
16:57 |

tip: Ctrl-D to close the terminal after using & on a process. |
17:01 |
VanessaE |
then you don't have to worry about the terminal killing the process on the way out. |

I'm just wondering, what are the minimum requirements for a server? |
18:56 |
xenkey |
I mean of course it will run on a 90s Jornada but what specs do I need to make the players... happy |
18:57 |

Depends on the amount of players and how you optimize the the server |

xenkey: a low-end CPU in the 1-2 GHz range, 1-2 GB of RAM, a fast disk, a fast network pipe |

that's about all you need, and you can run a few light-weight servers on that. |

xenkey, 1 GiB is not much.. maybe 3 or 4 |
19:00 |
xenkey |
I think there can be more than one emerge thread handling map generation |
19:00 |
xenkey |
Krock: It's 1 or 0.5 :P |
19:00 |
CWz |
my server has 2.33 pentium D, 1GB ram and 120GB HDD |
19:00 |
asl97 |
xenkey: that cause buggy cave iirc |
19:00 |
xenkey |
CWz: How many players do you have on a regular basis? |
19:00 |
Trixar_za |
I've run a server on less |
19:00 |
CWz |
0 |
19:00 |
xenkey |
asl97: Not much of a problem imo |
19:00 |
Krock |
xenkey, huh? The minetest server here only uses about 50 MiB RAM |
19:01 |
Trixar_za |
Should be fine for about 10-40 players |
19:01 |
xenkey |
Krock: Then how is 1GB not enough lol |
19:01 |
asl97 |
xenkey: it depend on the world size and version of the minetestserver |
19:02 |
asl97 |
if it's the old server which load every player files, 1gb wouldn't be enough iirc |
19:02 |
Krock |
xenkey, my server has a minimalistic setup. It heavily depends on the active blocks settings and activated mods |
19:02 |
xenkey |
I ran a server on a 4 core ARM box once and it reached the top of the server list (sort of), wondering if I should go again |
19:02 |
Krock |
so how do you think it's 1 or just 0.5? |
19:02 |
xenkey |
Krock: You'd have to put some effort into finding a server with only 50MB RAM |
19:03 |
xenkey |
I have servers with 1GB and 512MB |
19:03 |
Krock |
xenkey, minetest-server, not the complete server. |
19:03 |
xenkey |
huh |
19:03 |

krock said the server process use about 50 mib |
19:04 |
Krock |

19:04 |
xenkey |
yeah |
19:04 |
xenkey |
<22Krock> so how do you think it's 1 or just 0.5? |
19:04 |
xenkey |
With those I meant the RAM of my machines |
19:04 |
xenkey |
Not my estimate on the usage |
19:04 |
Krock |
ooh, I thought you were talking about the amount of servers |
19:05 |
xenkey |
Oh another thing |
19:05 |
xenkey |
It runs FreeBSD, is that an issue? |
19:05 |

It's an issue when you can't get a compiled version for it :P |

<VanessaE> only the paranoid insist on encrypting *everything* :P |
19:17 |
Calinou |
I think we should encrypt all the things (no meme intended), because it's the only way stuff can be secure; without it, nothing is really secure |
19:17 |
Calinou |
it is of course an ecological disaster, but better have that and save the world's privacy |
19:19 |
VanessaE |
yeah but sometimes "secure" is useless |
19:19 |
VanessaE |
why be "secure" with a publicly-searchable pastebin? |
19:19 |
VanessaE |
now ont he other hand login credentials, bank stuff, and anything else that implies a private exchange should be encrypted for sure |
19:19 |
Calinou |
I guess up1.ca is not indexed by search engines (and that's a good thing I'd say, pastebins should not be indexed unless author says so) |
19:20 |

(and the strongest encryption that's practical, too) |

what would cause a client to hang when connecting saying "item definitions..."? It happens when my brother (win8) tries to connect to my server (linux) with lots of mods enabled, but doesn't happen if he runs the server locally (windows), or if I connect with other clients here (all linux), or if there are fewer mods enabled. It looks like here except our versions match 0.4.12 https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10844& |
