VanessaE |
so I can stop being the middlewoman :) |
02:08 |
cheapie |
What's wrong with percentages? |
02:10 |
bas080 |
hey cheapie |
02:10 |
cheapie |
There's a reason that (for example) wget says things like "50%" instead of "5000/10000". |
02:11 |
bas080 |
I said, "Cheapie liked the progress in percentiles. I choose to no longer do this because it represents the point system with flowers better" |
02:11 |
bas080 |
furthermore, "It's not an opening tool. it's a grafting tool. That's the Jargon when it comes to beekeeping" |
02:11 |
bas080 |
I do this to make things a bit educational |
02:12 |
cheapie |
If you're going to do "points", at least provide some kind of explanation. |
02:12 |
cheapie |
"521+16/1000" doesn't make any sense at all without looking through the code. |
02:13 |
bas080 |
well, you can arrive at an answer by noticing that the amount of flowers that one places near the hive etermines the amount of +points |
02:13 |
cheapie |
I see what you mean with the grafting tool, at least. |
02:14 |
cheapie |
And this is better than something like "50% Complete (3% bonus from flowers)" how? |
02:15 |
bas080 |
The disable particles is a good idea. I have noticed that some mods do this by using the API get global particles enabled or something like that. Not sure how to exactly do this but I have seen mods use this. |
02:15 |
bas080 |
That way the settings preference is used |
02:17 |
cheapie |
The global particles thing is an engine setting (I think) that turns off ALL particles whether the mods like it or not. Some users (me included) would like the particles when (for example) digging on, but don't like machines to look like they're flinging beeswax everywhere. |
02:18 |
bas080 |
ok, that is useful indeed! |

bas080 |
:) |

Enke joined #minetest |

For the capitalization I do not agree with your aproach. Yes many mods capitalize all words. I however choose to not capitalize anything in the hope the engine will take care of that one day |
02:20 |
bas080 |
That way the engine can determine is words should be capitalized per word or only first word |
02:22 |
cheapie |
bas080: What makes you think that's a good idea? Are you expecting grammar rules to suddenly change some day? |
02:22 |
Hirato |
let's all adopt esperanto as the official minetest language |
02:23 |
bas080 |
cheapie, You have removed the stack_max. I noticed you don't like the stack_max. I choose to use them because it this feature is not used enough. People should be more considered when it comes to using the player inventory and using stack_max forces them to do so. |

02:24 |
bas080 |
cheapie, I don't think minetest is the best example of englsh grammar. |
02:25 |
cheapie |
bas080: Doesn't mean that it should be purposely broken. |
02:25 |
VanessaE |
bas080: I would suggest using cheapie's capitalization... your all-lowercase text will look kinda "unfinished" in-game, imho. |
02:26 |
bas080 |
Fine, I'll go with it. |
02:27 |
bas080 |
But only if it's not every word but just the first one |
02:28 |
bas080 |
Otherwise it looks like every word is a description |
02:28 |
cheapie |
bas080: Phrases (such as "Missing Queen Bee") are supposed to have all of the "major" words capitalized. |
02:29 |
cheapie |
Sentences are supposed to be capitalized like this. |
02:29 |
cheapie |
"Missing Queen Bee" is not a sentence. |
02:30 |
bas080 |
If it is not a sentence, then what is it? |
02:30 |
cheapie |
It's a phrase. |
02:30 |
OldCoder |
Vazon, explain mapgen v7 |
02:30 |
* OldCoder |

02:32 |

(in English) a sequence of two or more words that does not contain a finite verb and its subject or that does not consist of clause elements such as subject, verb, object, or complement, as a preposition and a noun or pronoun, an adjective and noun, or an adverb and verb. |
02:32 |
|
naccall joined #minetest |
02:33 |
bas080 |
Is missing a verb? |
02:33 |
cheapie |
I don't think it's a "finite" verb here. |
02:35 |
bas080 |
Having capitals does make things look more EPIC |
02:35 |
bas080 |
grandiose is the word |
02:36 |
VanessaE |
"Missing" is an adverb here. |
02:36 |
VanessaE |
or an adjective, depending on how to see it |
02:36 |
VanessaE |
it modifies Queen, or Queen-Bee |
02:36 |
VanessaE |
therefore, it isn't a verb |
02:37 |
cheapie |
VanessaE: So "Missing Queen Bee" is a phrase, right? |
02:37 |
bas080 |
VanessaE, I think you are correct. The missing frame |
02:37 |
VanessaE |
imho it forms a compound noun, therefore a phrase in the usual sense,. |
02:37 |
VanessaE |
if it were a book title, all three words would be capitalized. |
02:39 |
bas080 |
Is that because it is phrase or the title of a book? Names are indeed capitalized |
02:39 |
bas080 |
It is the name of the book/film |
02:39 |
bas080 |
This is not a name but displays the state of a node. |
02:40 |
VanessaE |
right but Queen Bee is a title by itself |
02:40 |
VanessaE |
and Missing is the first word of that phrase |
02:40 |
VanessaE |
so in this particular instance, all three words should be capitalized |
02:40 |
bas080 |
Point |
02:40 |
cheapie |
VanessaE: Same for "Missing Empty Frame(s)", right? |
02:41 |
VanessaE |
for an empty frame, I'd go with lower-case on the second two words but that becomes a style/preference thing. |
02:41 |
cheapie |
"Missing empty frame(s)"? |
02:41 |
VanessaE |
yeah |
02:46 |
bas080 |
cheapie, if you would like, could you make three commits. One for the improved spelling, one for the particles another for the changes to readme. Also write a short description as to what you have added to the mod after your name. Please use spaces instead of tabs for indents. Then I'll make sure to merge when the request is made. |
02:47 |
cheapie |
OK, I'll do that a bit later tonight. |

there is nothing special that you need to do. |

just build the engine, install the game content to the minetest games directory, and mods go in minetest's mods directory. |

Krock, That was not his question. He depends on `pipeworks', so if his mod is getting loaded, it means pipeworks is installed and working correctly. |

Hi, I have a tricky question: I have the following line: "for _,obj in ipairs(minetest.env:get_objects_inside_radius(...) do mytable[obj] = 1 end". Is it later possible to do "for i, target in pairs(mytable) do i:get_luaentity() end"? |
15:40 |
Taoki |
In other words, if I add an entry to a table as an object, can I later use that entry as the object itself? |
15:40 |
Taoki |
A similar question: If I do "local i = obj" (where obj is a Lua entity), can I then do "if i:get_luaentity()" somewhere else in the code? |
15:41 |
Krock |

The SimpleMobs code seems to indicate that it works. But I'm not sure if Lua entities are stored as actual objects, or these are references I can use however I like |

sfan5, I started again a little try to get leveldb running with your zip archive from buildbot. Now, the cmake outputs me the following error: http://pastebin.com/qYDKgnUg Is it even windows-compatible? |
15:46 |
Krock |
Taoki, for those problems, I mostly create some dummycode and test it :P |
15:48 |

Krock: you know that this is just a warning? |

Hi, can you run a test for me Soko? |
23:35 |
VanessaE |
I had to hard-power-off the machine to get up off of THAT one. |
23:35 |
Jordach |
VanessaE, so clearly windows wins again |
23:36 |
Jordach |
wtf is inside my desktop |
23:36 |
VanessaE |
Jordach: no, so clearly there's a really BAD memory leak in Linux builds. |
23:36 |
VanessaE |
10GB versus 5? |
23:36 |
VanessaE |
however, that Linux crashed when it ran out of memory instead of just killing the offending process is a bad mark for Linux, I'll agree with you there. |
23:37 |
Exio4 |
do you have swap? |
23:38 |
Sokomine |
vazon: can you tell me more about what kind of test you have in mind? |
23:38 |
Exio4 |
if yes, how much? what is your swapiness? |
23:38 |
Sokomine |
vanessae: bad |
23:38 |
VanessaE |
Exio4: 16GB of RAM, and no swap. |
23:38 |
Exio4 |
no swap |
23:38 |
Exio4 |
exactly |
23:38 |
VanessaE |
why the hell should I need swap with that much RAM??? |
23:38 |
Exio4 |
who the fuck will use ZERO SWAP |
23:39 |
Vazon |
Sokomine: I have started a paramat v7 mapgen server but im also using it to see if i can fix the media hang ups, can you log in and tell me if it is still getting stuck? |
23:39 |
Sokomine |
there used to be issues where "no swap" did confuse linux - it ran better if there was a physikal swap drive, even though it did not make much sense |
23:39 |
Exio4 |
no swap means if no memory is left, lets kill someone |
23:39 |
Exio4 |
OOM |
23:39 |
Exio4 |
out of memory |
23:40 |
Sokomine |
vazon: hm. i may try, but i usually don't run into media hangups due to a well-filled cache. i join so many servers that almost every image is in my cache by now |
23:40 |
VanessaE |
Exio4: yeah, so how about we kill the thing that sent the machine off into la-la land? |
23:40 |
Exio4 |
killing something means the kernel says "fuck you" and kills whatever it finds worth killing |
23:40 |
Exio4 |
that thing wouldn't have crashed your machine if you had some swap |
23:40 |
Vazon |
o lol |
23:40 |
Exio4 |
even if it was just 4gb |
23:40 |
VanessaE |
Exio4: let me reiterate. sixteen gigs of RAM. |
23:41 |
VanessaE |
that's a metric fuckload., |
23:41 |
Exio4 |
yeah, i have 12gb and i love swap because i sometimes fuck up with VMs and end using 20 gb of ram |
23:41 |
VanessaE |
I shouldn't need swap at all. |
23:41 |
Exio4 |
it ain't a fuckload |
23:41 |
* Jordach |
hands VanessaE a phat one |
23:41 |
Jordach |
chill out |
23:41 |
Exio4 |
the swap is freaking nice hey |
23:41 |
Exio4 |
why people say swap is bad |
23:42 |
Exio4 |
did a bug called swap bite you as child? seriously, swap means the system will free your FAST ram of crap and let the system have more cache there |
23:42 |
Exio4 |
and it also means in the worst case of something leaking memory, the system won't kill anything "pseudo-random" |
23:43 |
Exio4 |
i've never crashed my system by overusing memory, and i have a lot of ram hey! |
23:44 |
VanessaE |
fine |
23:44 |
* VanessaE |
turns on 16GB of swap |
23:44 |
VanessaE |
hm |
23:44 |
* VanessaE |
doesn't |
23:44 |
Jordach |
VanessaE, so if i try to break minetest with something that should kill it, yet it doesn't die; why is that |
23:45 |
Exio4 |
what happened tho? |
23:45 |
VanessaE |
Jordach: I'd tend to blame the OS actually. |
23:45 |
VanessaE |
Exio4: nowhere sane to put it. |
23:45 |
Jordach |
VanessaE, i can get similar results on my old Acer desktop |
23:45 |
Jordach |
with 128x |
23:45 |
VanessaE |
Exio4: only 4.6G free in /, 22 free in /home, 384 on /storage (and that's spinning rust) |
23:46 |
Jordach |
VanessaE, protip: wondered why Quassel and crew were only using ~20mb of ram? |
23:46 |
Exio4 |
where you going to put swap in your SSD? poor disk |
23:46 |
VanessaE |
Exio4: modern SSD, swap won't kill it |
23:46 |
Jordach |
windows was hotswapping them between cache and swap |
23:47 |
Exio4 |
VanessaE: how did you make your system OOM though? |
23:47 |
VanessaE |
Exio4: one of the big sites like anandtech or tomshardware or some such, just did this test with modern SSDs, found that they'll all go way WAY beyond their rating now, as in hundreds of terabytes. |
23:47 |
VanessaE |
Exio4: um, weren't you watching? Minetest + HDX 512 + my creative server. |
