03:05 hoodedice What is the syntax for 'if, then, else...' in lua?
03:06 hoodedice I'm using lua to write simple pseudo-code for another language
03:06 hoodedice I need the contraction thingy in Notepad++ to work properly, but it just contracts all of the nested if statements
03:09 hoodedice I just need to be able to seperate nested schist from the parent schist

05:01 hoodedice That moment when you've coded so hard, you use Tabs in browser to indent XD
05:29 ShadowNinja I often try tabs, but few sites work properly with them.
05:29 ShadowNinja (gist does, ubuntu pastebin doesn't)
05:32 ShadowNinja Lua feels so easy after messing with C(++) and getting tons of inexplicable segfaults.  :-)
05:33 ShadowNinja But you don't get the feeling of finally fixing everything and getting valgrind to run with no warnings.  :-|

19:07 _Zeus I was going to ask you people why minetest was better then any other game, but it's apparently crap. The chunk loading was slow when I actually tried to join a server, the gameplay isnt great, and then there's this: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=4039
19:07 _Zeus Plus the mod API is LUA
19:09 VanessaE crap?
19:10 VanessaE ok first thing's first:
19:10 VanessaE forget the ragequitters.
19:10 VanessaE they're just asses.
19:10 VanessaE every game out there has them.
19:12 VanessaE second, we have LuaJIT, which compiles the Lua code.
19:12 VanessaE the result is about as fast as the native C++ engine for a lot of stuff.  where it is slow usually comes down to poor coding skills or the API itself lacking some speed-critical function that can't be done well in Lua.
19:12 _Zeus That doesnt make LUA not suck.
19:13 _Zeus Im not talking about speed.
19:13 VanessaE if a server is slow at loading chunks, it's because that server is on a slow network.
19:13 _Zeus LUA just I do not like
19:13 VanessaE so?
19:13 Jordach compare that to other libs where you need compiled libs for File I/O, time, network management
19:13 VanessaE you're not the one running the code :)
19:13 VanessaE the server runs the code, not the client
19:13 pitriss _Zeus: Api is sufficient to do most needed things with game..
19:13 VanessaE so it doesn't matter, from the client's perspective, if the server runs Lua, Ruby, C++, Python, or BASIC for that matter.
19:14 VanessaE If the gameplay isn't great, try another server - each server has its own style.
19:14 VanessaE each server has their own game, their own set of mods, etc.
19:15 VanessaE I run 6 of them, myself.
19:15 * whiskers75 hugs VanessaE
19:16 VanessaE one has Realtest, one Nostalgia, two are extremely heavily modded minetest_game (what I call "my" game really at this point), one is nearly pure vanilla minetest_game, and one is an experimental thing that's not so much a game as a mapgen testing ground that morphed into a worl that people started building on.
19:16 SylvieLorxu joined #minetest
19:16 pitriss VanessaE: We appreciate your efforts;)
19:16 VanessaE thanks pitriss :)
19:16 VanessaE but my point is that each server is utterly different.
19:17 VanessaE Realtest is about as ridiculously different from "minetest" as you can get, really
19:17 pitriss VanessaE: BTW realtest is great idea but it have some flaws.. Too many unused ores for example.. :)
19:17 VanessaE Nostalgia is a more-or-less accurate recreation of what 0.3.x was like before darkrose picked it up and kept that branch going (she's done wonderful things with it)
19:18 VanessaE my game expands on minetest_game by adding pretty much everything under the sun that someone should ever want to build with on a normal basis, machines, electronics, food, etc.  you name it, it's probably there.
19:19 VanessaE "almost" vanilla is for folks who want a simple game.
19:20 VanessaE none of them have PVP or fire enabled, things like a nether mod, for example, because I see no use of that, nor of things like "aether" or any kind of "the end" type of mod, etc.
19:20 PenguinDad or for people with slow internet connections like me
19:20 VanessaE pitriss: yeah I know.  I think sda97 and DanD had intended to continue expanding the game past "black iron" and into a more modern age
19:21 pitriss VanessaE: and I bet RealTest rewamped will have way more players (even at current WIP state) with better documentation..
19:22 VanessaE pitriss: indeed so
19:22 VanessaE but I don't perceive of that documentation happening any time soon
19:22 rubenwardy ha
19:22 VanessaE DanD left rather loudly.  He has since sorta come back, but I don't see him getting much into this anynore.
19:22 VanessaE anymore*
19:23 VanessaE _Zeus: any more questions? :P
19:23 _Zeus Eh, well, I might actually stick around. See if somebody makes a non LUA implementation of the modding API. I really dont play games anymore, I just find ones and code on them.
19:23 rubenwardy Lua's syntax is quite bad. I prefer JS.
19:23 _Zeus I'd make one but it sounds painful currently.
19:23 john_minetest joined #minetest
19:23 _Zeus Unless I wanted to make a game wrapper.
19:24 pitriss VanessaE: we building czech one.. currently it is bunch of notes linked together.. If it grows into usable state, we maybe translate it to EN and put on wikia or some similar wiki provider:)
19:25 VanessaE _Zeus: I don't expect there will be a non-Lua API, however it is possible to code add-ons in C++ or so.  See the IRC mod for example
19:25 _Zeus It still seems painful.
19:25 _Zeus There is no way I am coding in LUA
19:25 _Zeus And as I said I only really "play" to make mods/plugins depending apon the game
19:25 VanessaE just don't suggest javascript
19:25 VanessaE NO one and I mean NO ONE will accept that :)
19:26 Calinou lua syntax is quite cool
19:26 _Zeus I'd prefer a windows batch ping system to LUA xP
19:26 VanessaE do a google search for "lamefun" and "javascript" and you should find some results that explain why I say that :)
19:26 PenguinDad and i think ruby won't be accepted either :P
19:26 _Zeus no, not javascript
19:26 Calinou praise javascript!
19:26 _Zeus Lol penguin.
19:27 Calinou the language will not be changed anyway
19:27 _Zeus YES RUBY DO RUBY YES YES
19:27 VanessaE Calinou: byte your tongue :P
19:27 Calinou "(she's done wonderful things with it)" the power of the reactionary
19:27 _Zeus Personally, I think plain old C, C++, or C# would do nicely.
19:27 Calinou _Zeus, you sound like Berlusconi when saying that :P
19:27 Calinou C#: no thanks
19:28 Calinou C++/C: you can use them under some circumstances, but do so only when needed
19:28 rubenwardy Ruby is worse than lua
19:28 VanessaE C or C++ would possibly be accepted, maybe.
19:28 VanessaE but C# or batch will never be.
19:28 _Zeus C# DOES have it's issues
19:28 rubenwardy (minus the whole 1 index thing)
19:28 VanessaE whatever it is has to be cross-platform.
19:28 _Zeus I was kidding about batch >.>
19:28 _Zeus And C# wouldnt really work
19:28 VanessaE ok :)
19:28 _Zeus I knew that already
19:28 _Zeus C and C++ are painful
19:28 Calinou Java is way better at crossplatform
19:28 Calinou so use Lua
19:28 VanessaE _Zeus: well you never know
19:28 rubenwardy I vote Javascript!
19:28 Calinou it doesn't hurt to learn a new language
19:28 Calinou you won't forget your previous languages
19:28 VanessaE we've had some incredibly insane-sounding suggestions here!
19:29 _Zeus And java isnt really the best, and would be impossible to implement anyway
19:29 rubenwardy How about brainfuck?
19:29 rubenwardy !g brainfuck
19:29 MinetestBot rubenwardy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brainfuck
19:29 _Zeus I tried implementing java from other languages. It's impossible.
19:29 VanessaE rubenwardy: and I vote you go suck an egg :)
19:29 * rubenwardy puts a kitten on VanessaE's head
19:29 * VanessaE puts the kitten in OldCoder's pile
19:30 _Zeus Hmm, brainfuck looks good
19:30 _Zeus Easier then implementing java by a long shot
19:30 VanessaE haha
19:30 PenguinDad the syntax isn't complex but ...
19:30 VanessaE didn't someone write a brainfuck interpreter as a mod somewhere?
19:31 _Zeus Let's make it read assembly.

19:32 rubenwardy 4LOL!
19:32 PenguinDad VanessaE: you got pwned by ShadowBot xD

19:33 Jordach VanessaE, nore made the FORTH machuine
19:33 VanessaE ah right
19:33 VanessaE why can't I remember this shit?
19:33 OldCoder Hi
19:33 _Zeus Guys, pick a random number between 1 and 300
19:33 Calinou C is slower than assembly, usually
19:33 Calinou _Zeus, 299
19:33 * Jordach jams some more C64 RAM into VanessaE
19:33 Calinou alternative: open a Cube-based game, type /echo (rnd 300)
19:33 OldCoder _Zeus, Malborge is interesting
19:33 _Zeus Okay, now time to find the 299th language on this list... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programming_languages

20:12 domtron I think Lua is good for modding because of it's simplicity and speed (even if it's syntax is bad). Anyway, since everyone complains about the syntax could we build a simple syntax wrapper ontop of LuaJIT to fix that? Or we could use Lisp... :P
20:13 BrandonReese joined #minetest
20:13 domtron meh, I'm to slow. I have school work to do anyway >.>
20:14 pitriss Syntax is good.. I hate nonstandard things on lua.. they reinvented wheel many times..
20:15 pitriss why the hell they used ~= instead more standard !=, why they doesn't used some existing implementation of regexes instead their patterns?
20:16 pitriss and indexing from 1 is just last nail to coffin.:)
20:17 domtron but since arrays are just tables with numeric keys you can use 0 as the first item right?
20:18 VanessaE yes.
20:18 pitriss But those lua patterns.. somebody should kill author for that.. why the heck i need learn the same thing as PCRE (which i know really good) just for one stupid language
20:18 VanessaE they just default to index-from-1 is all, I believe,
20:18 pitriss yes but default is 1
20:18 VanessaE now, the != versus ~= was just plain stupid :)
20:18 VanessaE that one drives me nuts.
20:18 pitriss VanessaE: ruby uses =~ for regex matching
20:19 VanessaE well ruby is stupid too :)

20:29 JesseH Not always the case, but more often than not.
