02:08 |
hoodedice |
plol. Did you not say that cUrl does stuff like torrenting? |
02:08 |
hoodedice |
Or something? |
02:09 |
VanessaE |
curl uses http to fetch files from a remote media server |
02:09 |
VanessaE |
if the minetest server you connect to is configured to tell the client where to go |
02:10 |
hoodedice |
So it's the same as a browser. |
02:10 |
VanessaE |
similar idea yeah |
02:10 |
hoodedice |
And I'm too lazy to config shit, so I'll just give that a pass. |
02:10 |
VanessaE |
else the client will fetch the media directly from the minetest server via the old protocol, which is about 1/4 the speed of http |
02:10 |
VanessaE |
curl is also needed for the public announce |
02:10 |
VanessaE |
and for the client to be able to read from the master server list |
02:10 |
hoodedice |
If I give all the mods that are used in the server, and my clients use that |
02:10 |
VanessaE |
(e.g. the public list) |
02:11 |
hoodedice |
Ok. Therefore, I'll need to build my own mt for ubuntu... |
02:11 |
VanessaE |
so, you want curl. :) |

02:12 |
hoodedice |

02:15 |
hoodedice |
VanessaE, simple question. Will you walk me through setting up an MT server? I've done half the stuff, port forwarding and shit, but I have a few performance related questions, which might be nooby |
02:15 |
VanessaE |
heh, I'm the last person to ask performance-related questions of :P |

02:16 |
hoodedice |
Hello Evergreen, sorry for the bug. |
02:16 |
VanessaE |
hoodedice: as long as the media is the same as before, and the server can *find it*, the clients won't re-download it |
02:16 |
hoodedice |
But don't you have your own server? |
02:16 |
VanessaE |
(provided they have it) |
02:16 |
hoodedice |
Okay, that;s great to know. |
02:16 |
VanessaE |
oh sure I do, but my servers perform rather crappily compared to some others |
02:16 |
VanessaE |
ask proller. |
02:16 |
hoodedice |
proller! |
02:16 |
VanessaE |
he'll tell you his are 100000000% faster than anyone else |
02:16 |
hoodedice |
Oh yes I know... |
02:16 |
hoodedice |
(#sarcasm) |
02:17 |
hoodedice |
Well, I'll just use celeron's recommended |
02:18 |
hoodedice |
(And I'm running this off a dual core 1.9 GHz celeron with 4 GB RAM) |
02:18 |
VanessaE |
even my "almost Vanilla" server can't handle more than around 20 users before it begins to lag (the map just doesn't wanna load faster than a certain rate, despite there being ample hardware resources available). |
02:18 |
VanessaE |
it routinely hits 35 users at its peak every day |
02:18 |
hoodedice |
Hmm. We are still a long way from stable |
02:18 |
VanessaE |
and that's with 8 gigs of RAM on a dual core 3.4 GHz i3. |
02:18 |
hoodedice |
I'm expecting 5 to 10 users |
02:19 |
VanessaE |
sapier and I have been working on the problem - it's nor hardware-bound, that much we are sure of. |
02:19 |
hoodedice |
I can see that |
02:19 |
hoodedice |
Back in the 0.4.6 days, when I used to play on Peacock's server |
02:20 |
hoodedice |

02:20 |
hoodedice |

02:20 |

still lags to hell these days |
02:21 |

02:21 |
hoodedice |
Ohai Peacock: Sorry for the ping. |
02:21 |

In other words, the 10 fps I get is a jump from 45-55, so it's not very noticable on my end. |

what's this player sqlite? Is there a dload link on the forum? Or is it compiled with the mt build? |
02:28 |
Peacock |
thats engine stuff, i dont do engine stuff, i just think it's stupid to have seperate files for each player, and to load them *all* into memory |
02:28 |
Peacock |
1 week of operation = 5K files |
02:28 |
Peacock |
ironically, windows file explorer does a better job of loading 5k files than thunar lol |

FOr now, I'll just be building minetest to match with sfan's bild |
02:35 |
hoodedice |
How come? |
02:35 |
Peacock |
i think the claims in landrush were probably too small so you had to have many per user, and they were all loaded into memory |
02:36 |
Peacock |
so i wrote a semi autonomous areas thingy where the server admin (me) creates areas. each area has its mayor who can add people to them |
02:37 |
Peacock |
that translates into half a dozen claims instead of dozens of claim per big building lol |
02:37 |
Peacock |
(half dozen for the whole map) |
02:37 |
Peacock |
what people do to each other inside their areas is no business of mine lol the mayor can boot griefers from his area |

I'm doing it for the first time. Can you please elaborate? |
03:54 |
hoodedice |
I sudo apt-add installed it |
03:54 |
VanessaE |
erm |
03:55 |
VanessaE |
you installed what exactly? |
03:55 |
hoodedice |
I see that the wiki uses wget. |

03:55 |
VanessaE |
ok that's fine. |
03:55 |

03:55 |
hoodedice |
Yeah, but that'll fetch latest |
03:55 |
VanessaE |
git reset --hard <the commit ID you want to stop at> |
03:56 |
hoodedice |
okay. full commit id? |
03:56 |
VanessaE |
cmake . -DRUN_IN_PLACE= foo bar blah etc; make -jwhatever |
03:56 |
VanessaE |
yes, the full ID, but the first several digits might work too |
03:56 |
VanessaE |
(I always use the full ID) |
03:56 |
hoodedice |
The rest can do. Only stuck at getting the correct commit. |
03:56 |
hoodedice |
Brb. Will try it out |
03:58 |
hoodedice |
So how long will the clone stay at that commit? Until a new commit is made, or until I clone it again? |
03:58 |
VanessaE |
it'll stay there until you pull or reclone. |
03:59 |

Ok, folder is set up, thank you very much Van. |

hi Peacock, i decided to convert 'moonrealm' into a moon mod, so far i have vacuum nodes that drown the player unless they have a spacesuit in inventory, also auto-setting of gravity when entering or leaving the realm, next footprints |

honestly i dont know who came up with this mudflow, but it looks god damn awful lol perfect square outlines and blocks of dirt ontop trees, i always thought it was a bug XD |
23:49 |
Peacock |
ive never been in a mudslide but ive seen YT's of it, they tend to push things like, oh, trees, roads and houses out of their way, rather than flow over it lol |
23:51 |
twoelk |
there was a raining gravel bug on VE-creative once, looked like dirty snow |
23:51 |
paramat |
:D flow mud is celeron's work |
23:52 |
paramat |
it just flows mud off sheer cliff edges to the ground below i think, if you fly around fast you can see it happening at mapgen time |
23:52 |
Peacock |
lol i dont get that if he doesn't like weather why code such a feature? lol |
23:53 |
Peacock |
"im not satisfied with the mapgen griefing via caves so let's add mud flow!" XD |
23:53 |
Peacock |
(just poking fun) |
23:54 |
twoelk |
yeah, tree griefing caves are not nice |
23:55 |
paramat |
Peacock, remember to redefine default:ice with 'is ground content = false' to avoid those largecavegen holes along chunk edges |
23:57 |
twoelk |
I wonder if highland ponds could be added to Mt.Meru |
23:57 |
Peacock |
right now im trying to figure how to add those two conf settings to set_mapgen_params :/ |
23:58 |
Peacock |
(biome,freq_desert) |
23:59 |
paramat |
so ideally mud should not flow over chunk borders, but it does because otherwise default mapgen would have lines of nomudflow along chunk borders, trees grow over borders to for the same reason ... and large caves :) |
