Peacock, 70+ fps with a 64px pack in MC |
00:00 |
Jordach |
without OPTIFINE. |
00:01 |
Peacock |
dang, how much is MC? |
00:02 |
Jordach |
$~30 USD |
00:02 |
Peacock |
fuck thats twice as much as i paid for the other two games and they're leagues ahead of both MT/MC |
00:04 |
twoelk |
are they really? or do they just focus on a smaller goal and fix what they have? |
00:04 |
Jordach |
Peacock, a lot changed since beta |
00:05 |
Peacock |
well i cant really convince anyone in a chat, i'd suggest checking out Blockscape and Space Engineers on youtube |
00:05 |
Jordach |
Peacock, i paid £17.95 via giftcard |
00:05 |
Peacock |
so, is it better than MT or no? (i never played MC) |
00:06 |
Jordach |
Peacock, playable on a P4 and has decent survival |
00:06 |
Jordach |
but better once you ramp said difficulty up |
00:06 |
Peacock |
on a p4? i cant even host an MT server on the p4 anymore |
00:07 |
paramat |
MC has a 256 node world height =/ |
00:08 |

Freenode's lagging. :-( (it's freenode, not ShadowBot. Pings are almost instant on another network) specing: It's keyed to PilzAdam, he's notorious for leaving immediately after saying bye. Peacock: No need for that. |
00:08 |
Peacock |
no need for what? lol |
00:09 |
NakedFury |
Space engineers is nice for how little it has for now |
00:09 |
NakedFury |
sweet sweet game |
00:09 |
Peacock |
devel is going fast on that game, blockscape not so much but its still nicer than first gen block games |
00:09 |
NakedFury |
blockscape is nice but development feels slower than Minetest |
00:10 |
twoelk |
from what I have seen MC is somewhat nicer to the casual player while Minetest gets really fun if you learn how to tweek it |
00:10 |
Peacock |
i almost don't mind, for every new feature there seems to be a new bug, or an old one gets worst |
00:11 |
Peacock |
wife just gave up trying to play 0.4.9 lol |

looking at the black jack tables on youre server, how about adding some billiard tables, just for the looks |
00:29 |
Peacock |
not sure how i could make those work though lol |
00:30 |
NakedFury |
just for the looks |
00:30 |
Peacock |
yeah but you know me lol |
00:30 |
twoelk |
adding atmosphere |
00:31 |
Peacock |
i suppose if i made the balls entities |
00:31 |
NakedFury |
I guess you wont add slot machines either then |
00:31 |
Peacock |
i have slot machines |
00:31 |
NakedFury |
since you cant add the colored lights to them |
00:32 |
Peacock |
well no i cant add colored lights to my slot machines but i gave up on trying to get this group to try anything new a while ago :P |
00:32 |
Peacock |
but you can bet fake money on slot machines on my server |
00:33 |
NakedFury |
color lightning would be its own x.x.# version if it made the cut |
00:33 |
Peacock |
ill tell you what i tell everyone, ittl never happen :P |
00:33 |
NakedFury |
well brb |
00:33 |
Peacock |
either its beyond the dev's skills, or a particular dev has a hardon against it, but yeah lol |
00:34 |
Peacock |
in any case id just settle for a non buggy version of mt to run a server off of :P |

01:49 |
Exio4 |
noone gives a way to reproduce it "properly" |
01:50 |
Peacock |
because no one can guess *why* it happens, users aren't devs |
01:51 |
Exio4 |
you don't need to say "the bug happens in enviroment.cpp:1234 with the variables a, b, c and x |
01:51 |
Exio4 |
" |
01:52 |
Exio4 |
Peacock: you need the how-to maybe reproduce it |
01:52 |
Exio4 |
a workaround |

Peacock |
in the army they use the term "Facts of the ground", here are the facts on the ground: people get teleported off the map (far), it happens to multiple users on multiple machines, devs don't know what's causing this. I dont know why you bring this up now hours later, this aint email, it's chat |
02:00 |
Exio4 |
devs don't play the game and users don't provide enough info |
02:00 |
Peacock |
of course not if devs played the game once in a while they might notice what's wrong with it |
02:01 |
Exio4 |
if the devs played that much they won't have time for developing enough shits though |
02:01 |
Exio4 |
they do it in their spare time when they are able to do anything |
02:01 |
Peacock |
i read the logs, they seem to spend more time debating things than getting them done :P |
02:02 |
Peacock |
they could certainly split debate time between debate and playing/testing |
02:02 |
Peacock |
hows that different from anyone else? players play in their spare time, modders mod in their spare time |
02:02 |
Exio4 |
kahrl, hmmmm |
02:02 |
Exio4 |
if you have 3 hours the day |
02:03 |
Exio4 |
and you spend one hour playing the game, other developing mods, and other coding shit for the engine |
02:03 |
Peacock |
lol whats wrong, got no arguments for an argument *you* start and now you need reinforcements? :P |
02:03 |
Exio4 |
my english is shit and i don't know to say the shit |
02:03 |
Peacock |
ok how exactly do you know how many hours each spend doing their specific tasks? |
02:03 |
Exio4 |
also |
02:04 |
Peacock |
well you know enough english to start shit, you should have the balls to finish |
02:04 |
Exio4 |
Peacock: i don't need reinforcements to saying "look at them" |
02:04 |
Peacock |
looks like you were pinging them |
02:05 |
Exio4 |
they aren't here probably |
02:05 |
Peacock |
and yeah half the dev team seem to be doing 90% of the work i grant you that |
02:05 |
Exio4 |
abd that 90% is mostly coding, not playing |
02:05 |
Exio4 |
the other 10% is done by "player-developers" ;) |
02:05 |
Peacock |
well the other half the team could actually test shit rather than debate their methods |
02:06 |
Exio4 |
1/4 of the dev team is busy most of the time because irl shit |
02:06 |
Exio4 |
also, what do you except them to do? |
02:07 |
Exio4 |
just code and then push to the engine? |
02:07 |
Peacock |
lol that's what they're actually doing now |
02:07 |
Exio4 |
they actually debate how to code the shit and what could be done before |
02:07 |

so many people do they're own thing that when things go wrong everyone says "no my department" :P |

my 048 server is corrupting the map |
02:10 |
Peacock |
the wife's 049 client is unplayable |
02:10 |
Exio4 |
how is that happening? |
02:10 |
Exio4 |
(the map corruption) |
02:11 |
Exio4 |
THAT is a wrong thing |
02:11 |
Exio4 |
but, why 0.4.8 and not 0.4.9? |
02:11 |
Peacock |
049 is just the client on the p4, it doesn't host the server |
02:11 |
Peacock |
but that client lags out even more than the previous 047 i had on there |
02:11 |
Exio4 |
yeah, why not move the server to the latest stable |
02:11 |
Exio4 |
Peacock: since what commit? |
02:12 |
Peacock |
its moving to newer stuff that's causing the frustration in the first place :P |
02:12 |
Exio4 |
did you move to the latest stable release or to so some commit? |
02:12 |
Exio4 |
lets look at minetest |
02:12 |
Exio4 |
it says "alpha" doesn't it? |
02:13 |
Exio4 |
i'm just saying you want a full game when it is barely "a work in progress" ;P |
02:16 |
Peacock |
last i was told, were still 10 versions away from 0.5.0, ill surely be past my 30th birthday by then |
02:16 |
Exio4 |
we're not 10 versions away from 0.5.0 |
02:17 |
Peacock |
and past my 40th for 1.0.0, though PCs will probably be museum pieces in the western world by then |
02:17 |

not as soon as you might except anyway |
02:24 |

i dont care *when* it comes so much as *what* it fixes :p |
02:24 |
diemartin |
0.5 will probably not be "just fixes" |
02:24 |
Peacock |
lag being a big issue, map (and/or memory corruption) being another |

(taking into account 0.3 → 0.4 basically changed everything |

02:25 |

well i wouldn't expect as much this time :p |
02:25 |

lets make a bug-fix only release called 0.5.0 so Peacock gets happy |
02:25 |
Peacock |
happy no, can run a server, yes :P |
02:26 |
Peacock |
what we have now can't handle all the android users, and corner note wants to add MT to steam |
02:27 |
diemartin |
anyway, it's not like "we got to release 0.5.0, so let's fix a big bug!"; it's more like "we have coded something that basically breaks backwards compat, so let's make this 0.5.0" |

its not like i mind that lol i just want what's already there to somewhat work better :P |
02:29 |

would if i could but A) im not keen on C++ B) minetest has too many source files |

and yeah no, sticking all the sources in the same file is a bad idea, even though i have a hard time visualizing something spread out over so many either :P which is why i dont do dev |
02:47 |
Exio4 |
it is easier to see that in different files |
02:47 |
Exio4 |
it also allows you to have multiple files in your screen in an efficient-way |
02:48 |
Peacock |
depends on the person |
02:48 |
Peacock |
heck even in the dev logs people have different opinions about how to format those files :P |
02:50 |
Peacock |
though if youre gonna assign value to feedback based on those who dev the engine and those that just use it, then i dont know how you expect feedback at all :P especially since you say devs don't use/play their own product :P |

most of the articles i read seem to describe heavy government spending since the 2001 default |
03:13 |

which, would boost prices without necessarily boosting investment |
03:13 |
Exio4 |
you could buy 420~ coca colas with the salary before |
03:13 |
Exio4 |
now you can barely afford 225-250 |
03:13 |
Exio4 |
that happened in only six years |
03:14 |

well hell here consumer goods cost the same, but things like rent, mortgages, power, gas have all gone up |
03:14 |
Peacock |
well hyperinflation will do that |
03:15 |
Exio4 |
here everything went up |
03:15 |

i need to sell my ARS to someone |

but the *hard* thing is getting cash dollar |
03:20 |

you can use your CC and have "cheap virtual dollar" |

or your debit card too |
03:21 |

there must be some way to setup a foreign account online? |
03:21 |

you can get the USD by just using the stock market too |

uh, dirt ridges are fixed in latest 0.4.9dev with the 'no mud flow' mapgen flag |

though what would be cool is a bedrock mod that handles all the undeground shit that we (you) could package with all your mapgens mods, then use singlenode |

im guessing that would be paragen + islands |
04:04 |

04:27 |

and even then it was failure to make a choice :P |
04:27 |

luajit uses features from lua 5.2 that are absent in the 5.1 lua packaged with MT |

04:32 |
Exio4 |
why should a mod be "luajit-dependentad" |
04:33 |
Peacock |
anyways that's a constant failing of opensource, trying to support all options instead of developing one to it's full potential |
04:33 |
Exio4 |
the fault of opensource is over the software level |
04:33 |
Exio4 |
it is a PEBCAK |
04:34 |
Exio4 |
we can't fix it, sorry ;) |
04:34 |
Peacock |
well we could spend the next decade discussing all of opensource's faults and the fanbois will still be proclaiming the year of linux on the desktop by 2024 lol |
04:35 |
Exio4 |
the desktop will die because companies don't like the idea of a proper hardware setup |
04:36 |
Exio4 |
they will become high-end only and the mid-to-low will be tablets, laptops, and other shit like that |
04:36 |
Peacock |
i kinda wonder what freetards will bitch about then lol |
04:36 |
Exio4 |
we'll have to deal with that, we don't manage the shit, M$, Google and the super companies around do that |
04:36 |
Peacock |
hopefully RMS will have gone the way of Steve Jobs lol |
04:37 |
Exio4 |
RMS is mostly right about his paranoic stuff, he says people is too used to the closed source shit and how it works to think positively about the "open source side" |
04:38 |
Peacock |
MS and Google produce what sells, and i tend to equate alot of MS/Google hate with general hatred towards american companies, because if any other country would gotten into IT first, no one there would dare bitch about it lol |
04:38 |
Peacock |
RMS may be paranoid but he's hardly right |
04:39 |
Exio4 |
M$ and Google create the necesity and the solution |

bitch all you want, i don't think you'd be online without them |
04:41 |

04:41 |
Exio4 |
we won't be here without rms either |
04:41 |
VanessaE |
er, I was getting online long before Microsoft even had their first OS. |
04:41 |
Peacock |
lol |
04:41 |
VanessaE |
have we forgotten the concept of BBSs? |
04:41 |
Exio4 |
also, the same with linux |
04:41 |
Exio4 |
yes VanessaE |
04:41 |
Peacock |
RMS' cause was a lost cause even back in the 80s |
04:41 |
Exio4 |
they are so old |
04:41 |
Exio4 |
facebook is the way to go |
04:41 |
Exio4 |
er, linus, not linux |
04:42 |
Peacock |
his whole modus operandi was to rail against a company that wouldn't give him the source to the driver lol |
04:42 |
Exio4 |
printer driver |
04:42 |
Peacock |
then linus came along and wrote a kernel, and he tried taking credit for that |
04:42 |
Exio4 |
linus only wrote a kernel |
04:42 |
Peacock |
while assuming control of several other projects while claiming GNU made linux possible |
04:43 |
Exio4 |
the basic userspace runtime and also the main libraries are gnu |
04:43 |
Peacock |
though RMS's main contribution is emacs and speeches |
04:43 |
Exio4 |
i'm talking about the whole GNU stuff, all the free software fundation and so on |
04:44 |
Peacock |
yeah, and whole gnu stuff has alot to do with the FSF convincing other people to turn over their copyrights |
04:44 |
Exio4 |
we can't say "you wouldn't be here without X company" or say shits like that |
04:44 |
Peacock |
people act like RMS had a direct hand in developing alot of those projects, he didn't, they were already done |
04:45 |
Exio4 |
rms developed a few projects there, yeah |
04:45 |
Peacock |
you might wanna research why linus would have nothing to do with GPLv3 lol |
04:45 |
Exio4 |
i know |
04:45 |
Exio4 |
it is like too "free software but not open source" |
04:45 |
Exio4 |
the GPL is one of the extreme points |
04:46 |
Peacock |
of course because there is a huge difference |
04:46 |
Peacock |
open source is pragmatic, free software is entirely political, and it's mostly the former producing the shit most people want and use |
04:47 |
Exio4 |
[01:40:36] <Peacock> bitch all you want, i don't think you'd be online without them < i can make that a "bitch all you want, i don't think you would be using a shitty os or even having closed source software here without them" |

05:04 |
Peacock |
heh ^ happens everytime |
05:05 |
Peacock |
ive already tried arch though, so gentoo seems the logical choice to try |
05:05 |
iqualfragile |
i would start an argument but its 6 in the morning and i am tired |
05:05 |
Exio4 |
archlinux is like worse than using ubuntu nightly releases |
05:05 |
Exio4 |
in stability-terms |
05:05 |
iqualfragile |
uuuh, i am realy considering arguing now |
05:05 |
Exio4 |
its package manager is nice |
05:05 |
iqualfragile |
ok, better |
05:05 |
Peacock |
i really did like archbang (arch + minimal install) but pacman kept breaking shit |
05:06 |
Exio4 |
but archlinux as it is now is shit |
05:06 |

oh god |

compiling everything? yeah lol |
05:06 |
SirDigby |
also he is being a dick |
05:06 |
Exio4 |
it is like "think or shit will break becasue you haven't read the shit properly" |
05:06 |
Exio4 |
because |
05:07 |
Peacock |
well fuck i shouldn't have to read a manual twice as thick as the bible to install an OS, its 2014 for christ sakes lol |
05:07 |
SirDigby |
sarcasm doesn't work well on the inter-buts |
05:07 |
Exio4 |
who SirDigby |
05:07 |
SirDigby |
right |
05:07 |
SirDigby |
Only try hards brag about arch |
05:07 |
Exio4 |
Peacock: that is why i like gentoo, it reduces its userbase to the right point |
05:08 |
SirDigby |
and it's like ya |
05:08 |
Exio4 |
if you don't read shit properly you'll end with everything fucked up |
05:08 |
SirDigby |
I can fuck with it |
05:08 |
SirDigby |
but I have a life |
05:08 |
Exio4 |
and that means you shouldn't be using it |
05:08 |
Exio4 |
lol dat lag |
05:08 |
Exio4 |
i'm REALLY out for this FUCKING LAST TIME |
05:08 |
Peacock |
exio it's attitudes like that that ensure linux will never be more than a niche OS |
05:08 |
SirDigby |
tell that to the class i'm teaching |
05:09 |
SirDigby |
how to use word |
05:09 |
SirDigby |
and i'm a student |
05:09 |
Peacock |
linux users want both to feel leet and yet increase linux adoption |
05:09 |
Peacock |
you cant have both, if you want more adoption, then you have to make it easier for anyone to use |
05:10 |
Peacock |
conning grandma into letting you install ubuntu doesn't count |
05:10 |
SirDigby |
I just want people to know how to turn on a computer, both 60-80 year olds and 5-30 year olds |
05:10 |
SirDigby |
these fucking kids are just as bad |
05:10 |
SirDigby |
that's what happens when everyone is on a ipad |
05:11 |
SirDigby |
i guess |
05:11 |
Peacock |
well kids like complicated and mid-age to geezers like simple to use |
05:11 |
SirDigby |
nvm |
05:11 |
Peacock |
i guess you can call me mid-age lol |
05:11 |
SirDigby |
I said nothing |
05:11 |
SirDigby |
no these kids are just dumb |
05:11 |
Peacock |
yeah lol |
05:11 |
Peacock |
they assume everyone has as much free time on their hands |
05:12 |
SirDigby |
they fuck with a computer all day that sit in their pocket but then they don't even know house to turn on a desktop |
05:12 |
Peacock |
most people in the west want computers that just works so they can get on with what really matters, not learning to mount USB drives lol |
05:13 |
SirDigby |
Iheh |
05:13 |
SirDigby |
ya |
05:13 |
SirDigby |
It's the same thing with cars |
05:13 |
SirDigby |
only if you fuck that shit up you might kill someone |
05:14 |
Peacock |
like seriously, " i wanna share pictures" not "learn how to mount usb, upload files via FTP, and educate my family on the best free software to access those files" lol |
05:14 |
SirDigby |
:D |
05:14 |

05:14 |

05:16 |

people can hate on windows all they want, most people dont use because they dont know better, they use it because its simpler |
05:16 |
SirDigby |
as long as they can break down from that bullshit self entitlement and ask for help I make money of the lack of what should be basic knowledge by now |
05:17 |
SirDigby |
off* |
05:17 |
Peacock |
hell i dont work in IT at all, yeah i sell websites (billboard sites basically) but i dont consider that IT so much as just business |
05:17 |
SirDigby |
I dreamed of this in high school |
05:17 |
SirDigby |
dosn't pay the bills tho |
05:18 |

05:18 |

05:20 |
Peacock |
if people could learn to get shit done themselves i'd be alot richer :P |
05:20 |
SirDigby |
well i do feel bad subsidizing my income from a school that runs na meeting up stairs with the distribution of marijuana. |

well if its legal who cares? |

05:22 |

lets me ask you this before i piss and go smoke, do you think that should be the case with all drugs, IDK about you but I have seen some fucked up shit when I was using that might change the minds of the average pot smoker |
05:24 |
SirDigby |
.brb |
05:24 |
VanessaE |
Idon't care what you smoke, snort, inject, or swallow, as long as it doesn't affect me or my loved ones. |
05:25 |
VanessaE |
and the reverse is true also: if I wanna smoke, and it doesn't affect you or your loved ones, you have no right to complain either. |
05:25 |
Peacock |
well weed's not the only thing i've done, but i at least try to stay family friendly around here :P though even heavy addicts will consume regardless of the law, better they buy from regulated sources and taxed proportionally for their future treatment |
05:26 |
Peacock |
seriously, victimless crimes shouldn't be crimes |

freetards used to love google, not sure how/why that changed |
20:13 |
us_0gb |
I don't like Chrome's address bar. Or that Chrome is proprietary. |
20:13 |
Peacock |
who gives a shit if it's proprietary (0.01% of people) so long as it works |
20:14 |
Peacock |
chrome caught on because firefox became bloated and slow |
20:17 |
us_0gb |
You said you didn't know why "freetards" no longer liked it. So I told you. |
20:17 |
us_0gb |
Firefox is also a pain. Also proprietary. |
20:17 |
Peacock |
i asked why freetard went from loving google to hating google, i didn't say chrome specifically |
20:17 |
us_0gb |
My bad. |
20:17 |
us_0gb |
Maybe it's the spying Google does these days. I don't know. |
20:17 |
Peacock |
in any case i hear RMS doesn't even use a modern browser, gets everything in text format? |
20:17 |
us_0gb |
Stallman is a nut though. You can't judge us all by what he does. |
20:17 |
Peacock |
yeah but if you use the same ideology it inevitably leads to that conclusion |
20:17 |
us_0gb |
Not really. It's his actions that are nutty, not his ideals. |
20:17 |
Peacock |
though im curious if iceweasel changing the firefox logo but using the exact same code makes it any less proprietary |
20:18 |
us_0gb |
I don't think he uses an outdated browser to be free. THere are plenty of free modern browsers. |
20:19 |
Peacock |
well most people want a browser that will load all their favorite sites without hassle, they dont necessarily have time to write to the webmasters telling them about the evils of proprietary formats and javascript |
20:19 |
us_0gb |
It does. The proprietary part is basically Mozilla's iron grip on the Firefox brand. You are not allowed to sell Firefox or modify it and call the modified version Firefox. |
20:19 |
us_0gb |
JavaScript is annoying even when it *is* free. |
20:20 |
us_0gb |
The code itself is free, aside from the "don't use the name Firefox" stipulation. |
20:20 |
Peacock |
im sensing a pattern here where whenever a company becomes a sponsor for free software they're eventually and inevitably vilified for their efforts, mozilla, google, etc. |
20:21 |
Peacock |
though they never say anything bad about IBM even though they made alot of money selling gear to the nazis (talk about true evil) |
20:22 |
us_0gb |
Mozilla isn't evil, they just don't let us use the Firefox name. So, to comply, we don't. |
20:22 |
us_0gb |
I don't know what to think about Google, but they do a lot of both good and bad. |
20:24 |
Peacock |
the way i see it with google is they're providing a service thats free of cost to the user, but they still have to pay to provide for that service, so they charge advertisers instead |
20:25 |
Peacock |
the correct solution for people who dont like that is to start their own search engine where the user is charged, and then they can have all the privacy they want |
20:26 |
us_0gb |
It's not a matter of who is charged. You can advertise without compromising freedom or privacy. |
20:26 |
Peacock |
i dont know how you think advertising works, but it has to be targeted to specific audiences to be effective |
20:27 |
Peacock |
thats why you dont see ads for beauty products during monster truck or home repair shows |
20:32 |
us_0gb |
john_minetest: The poll won't let me choose an option, but I like option one. |

yeah but you then complain about spying. I think people expect way too much from free services, they don't seem to realize they're the product, not the customer |
20:32 |
us_0gb |
I didn't complain about spying. I said that spying it the reason *other* people are against Google. |
20:32 |
Peacock |
ah well, then those people expect too much lol |
20:33 |
Peacock |
youtube pretty much is google lol |
20:34 |
us_0gb |
Not really. They are working toward systems that will prevent spying. THey put their money where their mouth is. I don't think they are asking for too much if they are actually doing something about it. |
20:34 |
us_0gb |
YouTube is owned by Google, yes. |
20:35 |
Peacock |
if they come up with their own service more power to them, its alot better than complaining about how other entities conduct their affairs |
20:38 |
Peacock |
companies aren't government, only shareholders get a vote |
20:38 |
us_0gb |
Peacock: They do do that. Have you heard of MediaGoblin? It hopes to be a replacement for YouTube and Flickr. |
20:39 |
us_0gb |
They build replacements. They aren't just standing around complaining. |
20:39 |
Peacock |
well, replacement is a fantasy, i'd aim for being an alternative with the demographic to whom such things matter |
20:39 |
us_0gb |
You not caring about this demographic doesn't mean it does not matter. |
20:39 |
Peacock |
and even if they did displace youtube in some alternate universe, how long before they get an offer ($) they can't refuse |
20:39 |
us_0gb |
Most if not all demographics matter. |
20:39 |
us_0gb |
Peacock: Due to the licensing, MidiaGoblin is unable to legally turn proprietary. Plus, you can make money with and even sell free software. |
20:39 |
Peacock |
yeah but when we're talking about a tiny demographic that takes these issues to heart, it's hard to believe that what they come up will replace the popular services, they'll at most be alternative/niche options |
20:39 |
Peacock |
last i checked, there doesn't exist a license where copyright holders are bound to keep releasing under the same license forever |
20:39 |
Jordach |
Peacock, I can't change the license of Sam I |
20:39 |
us_0gb |
It doesn't need to be a replacement for everyone to use. It needs to replace those services only for those who need a replacement. |
20:39 |
Jordach |
CC denies me that right |
20:39 |
Jordach |
which is BS |
20:39 |
Peacock |
the old versions will always be there under the same license, but the group can form a company, cease hosting the old thing, and come up with something new and proprietary, then it's up to another group to take up the old code and start over |
20:40 |
us_0gb |
Peacock: For MediaGoblin to turn proprietary, they would need to get the approval of ALL copyright holders. Due to heavy collaboration, that would be difficult to do. Everyone who added a patch is a copyright holder on the project. |
20:40 |
Peacock |
there's also all that dual-licensing stuff that gives me real headaches lol |
20:41 |
Peacock |
well VLC was able to re-license, and they even had fucked up french laws to deal with lol |
20:41 |
us_0gb |
Or they could carve out the patches, I supose. |
20:42 |
Peacock |
here's an interesting fact: the text of the GPL is copyright to the FSF (or GNU), so you have to use it as - is |
20:43 |
Peacock |
for a group that rails against copyrights and patents they do seem to place a premium on obtaining/holding all the copyrights to everything they get their hands on |
20:44 |
Peacock |
[cn] http://www.redhat.com/archives/redhat-install-list/2001-August/msg00346.html |
20:45 |
us_0gb |
Peacock: People have used modified versions of the GPL before. Them main thing you have to do though is rename your new license - you can't call it the GNU GPL. |
20:51 |
Peacock |
i wouldn't even chance it because i might find myself violating their copyright, and they're a litigious bunch |
20:51 |
us_0gb |
First, for the record, I don't like some of their licenses, such as the GFDL. THe GFDL isn't free at all, so I'm not saying the FSF is a pure force of good. However, most of the copyrights and patents they gather are used to preserve freedom. |
20:51 |
Peacock |
freedom or control? read the link i posted above |

Peacock: Reading over that page you posted, it seems that the main problem is that the developer decided to add his/her project to the GNU project, and didn't anticipate that Stallman had a direction he wanted to take the GNU project. If said developer wanted to keep control of his/her own project, he/she should not have tried adding it to a bigger existing project, especially one as politically and legally charged as the GNU project. |

you can create your own server specific one or use skins |

but skins requires a few extra mbs of download for first time players on your server |

hm i had an idea, i could wipe the netbook, put crunchbang, plug that into the router physical and run a dedicated server off that |
21:32 |

21:32 |
sfan5 |
Peacock: crunchbang is a good choice |
21:32 |
Peacock |
i used to use archbang but <omitted to avoid a debate> lol |
21:33 |
Peacock |
normally i stick xfce on crunchbang but for a ded server openbox is enough |
21:33 |
sfan5 |
s/openbox/no gui at all/ |
21:33 |
sfan5 |
but if you run it on a laptop a minimal gui may be good |
21:34 |
Peacock |
im not entirely sure how to setup the netbook to just launch minetestserver instead of a fullblown DE, (or how it would connect to the net in such an instance) |

I don't see why you'd need a GUI on a server |
21:34 |
Peacock |
but then id have to use netcfg i think? |
21:34 |
sfan5 |
you can connect to wifi with the command line |
21:34 |
sfan5 |
and rc.d is your friend |
21:34 |
Peacock |
no no, im doing the laptop thing because its the only box i can keep close to the router to plug with wire |

I've only used Openbox without LXDE once. It felt odd not having the panels there to greet me. I think I could get used to it, but since I don't have to, I'll stick with Xfce. |

I've ordered a new laptop. By "new", I mean "refurbished". I don't know if it will come prenamed or if I will be naming it though. I hope I get to name it. I might wipe it and reinstall just to name it if I don't already get to. |
