Windows is insecure, resource intensive, breaks itself, and strips you of essential freedoms. |

UniversalBuilder |
could you explain with more detail, i dont know much about operating systems |
05:24 |
UniversalBuilder |
what are the essential fredoms? |
05:24 |
sfan5 |
insecure -> The NSA can tell M$ to add a backdoor to Windows, they won't say no |
05:25 |
us{0gb |
Beaks itself: Windows slowly deteriorates as you use it. The longer you use it, the slower a Windows machine will become. |
05:25 |
us{0gb |
Insecure: Also Windows it the worst as far as viruses. Windows just LETS viruses trash the system. |

us{0gb: There is no functional difference between a virus and copy protection software. That's really why MS gets so many viruses I think. They just use the existing framework, built into it secretly for the use of various corporations. |
05:32 |
us{0gb |
It's not just copy protection software, is it? Viruses are like any software. If it has the permissions, it can do it, and Windows grants all the permissions. |
05:32 |
cy1 |
UniversalBuilder: Yes, take your time. Just read about it whenever you like. It's not a huge issue, and going slow always works out better when it comes to an OS |

us{0gb: Later versions of Windows 2000/NT+ have pretty good access control systems, though most people just use root because it's easier. :p What's special about MS is for instance the secret files which cannot be viewed by normal filesystem access, even if you enable viewing hidden files. |
05:34 |
us{0gb |
I see. I was unaware of those. |
05:34 |
us{0gb |
That's pretty lame. |
05:34 |
cy1 |
That lets corporations save a timestamp on your computer so they can magically deny you the ability to use their program if you don't pay up after the trial period. It also is a great place to hide viruses! |
05:35 |
us{0gb |
I wondered where data for that type of thing went. |

05:35 |
us{0gb |
Drats. The power flickered and it corupted my server's Minetest world. |
05:36 |
us{0gb |
The registry is an awful piece of junk, even in a clean environment. |
05:36 |
cy1 |
The Windows Registry is an interesting security by obscurity, in that it's deliberately complicated so that users won't be able to find the 7 scattered "timestamp" keys, but not secret or hidden particularly. |

05:49 |
hoodedice |
(https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?pid=107963#p107963) Should have read that earlier |
05:49 |
us{0gb |
I think what is slowing Minetest down is all these player files that are loaded at startup and kept in memory. Why are they not loaded when the player joins and dumped when the player logs out? |
05:50 |
hoodedice |
What do these 'player files' do anyway? |
05:50 |
us{0gb |
They store player locations, inventory, health, et cetera. |
05:50 |
VanessaE |
hoodedice: minetest_game doesn't change much, most of the focus is on the engine. |
05:50 |
us{0gb |
Data that isn't needed for players that are off line. |
05:51 |
hoodedice |
dumped = deleted? |
05:51 |
us{0gb |
Dumped as in taken out of RAM. Leave the copy on disk. |
05:51 |
hoodedice |
Ain't that obvious? |
05:52 |
hoodedice |
as in, why it is dumped |
05:52 |
VanessaE |
us{0gb: even with the thousands of accounts my servers have, the player files only add up to 5MB |
05:52 |
hoodedice |
Wow |
05:52 |
us{0gb |
Okay, deleted I thought meant from non-volatile memory. From volatile memory isn't much of a deletion. |
05:53 |
hoodedice |
Can't see lag in that. Something else is hogging the loading time |
05:53 |
VanessaE |
loading time is taken up mostly by registering nodes/items and rendering textures I guess |
05:53 |
us{0gb |
VanessaE, I just removed all the player files and my server is now fast again. |
05:53 |
VanessaE |
it takes me ~20 seconds to join my own server, for example, and it's on the same box as the client. |
05:53 |
kahrl |
VanessaE: still, player management could be optimized |
05:53 |
kahrl |
look at Environment::getPlayer |
05:54 |
kahrl |
it does a linear search on all players (even logged out ones) to find the one corresponding to a peer_id |
05:54 |
VanessaE |
(well closer to 25 seconds) |
05:54 |
us{0gb |
I'm talking about AFTER joining. Way too much lag. |
05:54 |
VanessaE |
wait, what? |
05:54 |
hoodedice |
peer_id? |
05:54 |
VanessaE |
lag as in server/network latency? |
05:55 |
us{0gb |
I removed the player files and it removed the killer lag on the server. Not really network latency but server latency. |
05:55 |
hoodedice |
How does that lag the game? |
05:55 |
VanessaE |
one thing I've noticed my servers doing is saving the maps. a LOT. |
05:55 |
VanessaE |
like every couple of seconds, huge CPU and disk spike, even when no one is on |
05:55 |
us{0gb |
All the players are stored in RAM even when NOT logged in. |
05:55 |
us{0gb |
I noticed this months ago, but didn't connect it to lag. |

accounts on minetest servers are password-protected if the server is set to require it, and it doesn't matter who signs on with a given name - if they know your password, they are you. passwords are hashed and stored in the server's password database |

15:17 |
VanessaE |
Jordach: too small, it would need to be ~60px to fit the image. besides, the earth image is supposed to be an official "seal", so a cube wouldn't make much sense. |

15:18 |
Jordach |
i've seen a KDE screenshot like trhat |
15:18 |
Jordach |
that* |
15:18 |
Dan_D |
They use the same texture I THINK |
15:18 |
PilzAdam |
Jordach, probably because KDE is so super-configureable that it can look like whatever you want |
15:19 |
Jordach |
then why does kubuntu look like Window 7 |
15:19 |
VanessaE |
Jordach: actually that's the Keramik theme for GTK/XFCE, recolored to purple. |
15:19 |
Jordach |
ah |
15:19 |
PilzAdam |
Jordach, my Kubuntu doesnt look like windows at all |
15:19 |
Pelayo_ |
kubuntu looks like kde only |
15:20 |
VanessaE |
btw, set off about 10 TNTs at once. the client will crash because of all the entities initially thrown around :) |
15:20 |
VanessaE |
at least in single player |
15:20 |
PilzAdam |
Kubuntu doesnt have a look, it is whatever you want |
15:20 |
Jordach |
PilzAdam, screenshot or gtfo |
15:20 |
PilzAdam |
not much to see on a screenshot |
15:20 |
Pelayo_ |
and kde copied lots of design concepts from windows, but that was more than 10 years ago and it has evolved separately |
15:20 |
PilzAdam |
youll only see the Minetest logo on skyblue background at 1080p |
15:21 |
PilzAdam |
everything is hidden ;-) |
15:21 |
Jordach |
KDE is a poor man's windows |

15:22 |

15:22 |

it uses the "side" texture for the bottom |

does it just take a heck of a lot of LV power? I don't want to keep using up diamonds to make generators... |

water mills are more effective cy1, but mv panels are way better (hint: use power at night and not day) |

maybe a wireless transmitter, but if you want to do away with wires (which would be my intent) then theyd always have to be place ontop the genny, which means you might as well make it builtin and save the extra node |

you earn the same shit pay, and you have to pay your dues on top |
20:20 |

here in the states, union jobs invariably pay more than non-union jobs -- even after taking out union dues. |
20:20 |
Peacock |
we already pay two income taxes (federal and provincial) |
20:20 |
Dan_D |
Well, it made the hdx folder where I wanted, but nothing in it |
20:21 |
andersje |
for example, when I taught at a technical college, I was in a teacher's union. I made about $8k/yr more than the guys at the non-unionized schools, but paid about $1200 of that into dues. |
20:21 |
Peacock |
unions for professionals look out more for their members than blue collar unions, |
20:21 |

in the states, we pay federal, state (except in florida) income taxes, plus sometimes municipal income taxes. |

Peacock, imageloader returns the image as a 2D matrix of tables; using different channels for different purposes should be easy |
23:04 |

the tables have 'r', 'g', and 'b' fields, so you could use for example r and g for node data and b for height |

simpler still would be to just add a height key to the palette |

I have a node that is taller than a standard node (using node boxes), and the texture on the bottom repeats on the top. How do I specify a second texture for the top, or even better, how do I get one tall image to texture the whole node? I tried setting visual_scale to two, but that property seems to only effect plantlike nodes. |
