00:00 |
hdastwb |
yup |
00:00 |
Peacock |
do you get the same performance with kaza's firearms? |
00:00 |
Peacock |
it uses a hud too |
00:01 |
hdastwb |
I've never been on a server that uses that |
00:01 |
|

but the hud seemed to almost always be wrong when testing in singleplayer |
00:04 |
Peacock |
i havent tried the hud yet since im going from 0.4.6 to 0.4.8 |
00:04 |
Peacock |
when paramat updates moonrealm |
00:04 |
Peacock |
which is the fastest/least intensive protection mod? |
00:05 |
Menche |
i would guess protector; all it does is check for protector blocks within a certain radius |
00:05 |
Peacock |
and for large areas what would you recommend? |
00:06 |
sokomine |
i'd vote for node_ownership. it may change if the list of protected areas gets longer |
00:06 |
Peacock |
i wanna split the map up into countries |
00:06 |
Menche |
node_ownership is the most flexible |
00:06 |
sokomine |
protector is very fine if you want players to self-protect small buildings |
00:06 |
Peacock |
id keep the shields for that |
00:07 |
sokomine |
for the ones i've seen on your server (except the ugly little cobble huts you don't want), it would be almost useless |
00:07 |
hdastwb |
(or muffin it and self-protect large swaths of land) |
00:07 |
sokomine |
hm. all those mods you prefer keep people away :-( that's far from what i want on a server. no annoying other players == singleplayer :-) |
00:08 |
Peacock |
shields can be handy during construction |
00:09 |
Peacock |
you dont want ppl sticking their noses in til its done |
00:09 |
sokomine |
so that the building does not fall appart? :-) |
00:09 |
sokomine |
ah, ok, that's an argument |
00:09 |
Peacock |
and protection doesn't necessarily stop people from using all the machines |
00:10 |
sokomine |
no, it doesn't stop them from that |
00:10 |
Peacock |
pipes/aeroponics and a few others i can't think of |
00:10 |
hdastwb |
you really don't want people around when item_drop is installed; they tend to absorb anything that you mine |
00:10 |
Peacock |
i disabled item drop :p |
00:10 |
Peacock |
drove me nuts too |
00:10 |
Peacock |
1 day = crap all over the place |
00:11 |
Peacock |
no wonder they had to fix clearobjects, amirite |
00:11 |
sokomine |
hdastwb: hmm. maybe we ought to set those players up as cleaners for all those buggy duplicated items that clug up many servers |
00:11 |
Menche |
what mod was providing the itemdrop? |
00:11 |
Peacock |
builtin |
00:12 |
Menche |
oh, you mean mining w/ a full inventory? |
00:12 |
sokomine |
even without item drop, players will be messy and leave lots of items lying around. especially in creative |
00:12 |
Peacock |
yeah i dont get that |
00:13 |
Peacock |
the inv has a trash button |
00:13 |
Peacock |
with a a damn trash can icon |
00:13 |
Peacock |
its not like its in a language they dont understand |
00:13 |
sokomine |
maybe it's the gathering/collecting attitude in "survival" mode |
00:14 |
Peacock |
you undo this :https://github.com/minetest/minetest/commit/ef6b8bee07b9cefe7d463fabd199548d37ff2bee |
00:14 |
Peacock |
to get rid of item drops on full inv |
00:14 |
Menche |
what about having a temporary chest spawn when an item is dropped that collects the item, and any more items that drop within 2-3 nodes get added to it? |
00:14 |
Menche |
the chest would disappear when emptied |
00:14 |
hdastwb |
it seems like items disappear faster in Minecraft; maybe they assume that they'll go away sooner here as well… |
00:16 |
Menche |
do items even disappear at all in Minetest? |
00:16 |
Peacock |
hmm, figured a way to make protection faster: drop the Y dim |
00:16 |
Peacock |
dont know but all those entities lag the hell out of my dualcore after a while |
00:16 |
Peacock |
and this is sposed to work on old hardware :p |
00:17 |
Menche |
at least having a timer that kills as dropped item after a set time may help |
00:17 |
Menche |
*a |
00:17 |
sokomine |
it lags on very fast machines the same as on slow ones (at least that fps drop due to too many items - like more than 1000...) |
00:17 |
Menche |
when testing the zombies game, i noticed that excessive entities lagged the client (FPS) as well as the server |
00:18 |
Peacock |
like i said, undo the pull i referenced and ittl be like before |
00:18 |
Menche |
i had a usual FPS of about 40-50 that dropped to 1-2 |
00:18 |
hdastwb |
the technic version of item_drop does have an item destruction timer, as well as item removal with lava and (I think) water movement |
00:18 |
Peacock |
no room in inv? too bad lol |
00:18 |
sokomine |
maybe a /clearallobjaroundme <radius> might help? |
00:19 |
Peacock |
item drop is good on paper, but not in practice (for me) |
00:19 |
* sokomine |
nods to peacock and finds it rather annoying as well |
00:20 |
hdastwb |
perhaps there's some way of optimizing entity transfer; it seems like they're the main cause of lag in many cases |
00:20 |
Peacock |
i do know in 0.4.6 some entities disappear, don't know if that's still a problem |
00:20 |
Peacock |
i log in and sentries are missing, and those are protected |
00:21 |
sokomine |
true, that entity transfer is strange. it's slowly increasing over time - you have to spend some time in the area, so i persume it takes client/server a long time to transfer them. one player who just arrived may be perfectly fine, while one who's been in the area for some time can hardly act anymore due to 3 fps |
00:21 |
Menche |
yeah, entities are unloaded when nobody's within active_block_range, and the server doesn't always reload them |
00:21 |
Peacock |
that is a problem on my server, sentries suddenly appearing when its too late to run lol |
00:22 |
sokomine |
the animals from mobf also need some time to pop up after entering one area |
00:22 |
Menche |
that's not new; in 0.3 i had that disappearing entities problem |
00:23 |
Peacock |
apart from guns the only entities i use is for terrain editor |
00:24 |
Peacock |
thats not a problem since they have a 5-second timeout then theyre removed |
00:27 |
Peacock |
node_ownership requires patching? |
00:27 |
Peacock |
:/ |
00:28 |
sokomine |

i also need good software to create good height maps |
17:55 |
RealBadAngel |
makin them manually is pain in the ass |
17:56 |
RealBadAngel |
but then only heightmap will be required, irrlicht is capable of generating normal maps out of heightmaps on the fly |
17:56 |
Calinou |
ideally, you should always make them manually, like normal maps |
17:57 |

those bricks i made manually |

ah, the height map |
17:59 |
RealBadAngel |
then made slight (4x) normal map made with gimp |
18:00 |

and copied heightmap onto normal map alpha channel |
18:00 |

this way i can have both of them in single file |

Okay. First time out, fiddling with a mod: 'money', trying to mess with the shop. The way I figure, 'on_punch' should be called when I left-click the shop. But 'can_dig' should return false when the shop contains anything. |
22:18 |
Mallot1 |
well thanks guys i got what i needed bye :) |
22:19 |
xiong |
Um, how does the engine know I punched instead of attempting to dig? |
22:19 |
Peacock |
punch is short |
22:19 |
Peacock |
long punch = dig |
22:19 |
xiong |
Um, also, for learning purposes, is there a simple action I can perform? Not sound. |
22:20 |
xiong |
So on_punch .... action = stupid_simple ... |
22:20 |

Ideally, I guess, the node blinks a funny color. |

A jack-in-the-box leaps out of the node shouting 'You punched me." |
22:23 |
Menche |
define the jack-in-the-box node and place it with set_node to the position above the punched node? |
22:23 |
xiong |
Okay, I'm just looking for something simple so I can tell when my on_punch function really has been called... and not an attempt to dig. |

The goal (if curious) is to alter the money mod so that the shop displays its tuning form even when it is not empty. |

The normal buy/sell screen comes up with a right-click; so punch is unused for a nonempty shop. However a nonempty shop cannot be dug up. |

Okay, another question. This caught my eye immediately and I still can't crack the puzzle. Why do you suppose the author put the tuning form under on_construct? Because it's not shown to the player then; it's shown on any right-click... until player fills it out correctly. Thereafter, right-clicks open the shop, displays its inventory and a form button or two for buy and/or sell. |
22:47 |
xiong |
The form does *not* appear when the shop node is placed. |

Ah, the lightbulb comes on. The formspec is merely defined on_construct; right-click *always* brings up any defined formspec/inventory. |
