how do you use register_on_mapgen_init() ? |
00:32 |
* Taoki |
tries to understand why battery boxes don't connect to wires |
00:33 |
kaeza |
I have this simple function: minetest.register_on_mapgen_init(function(mp) mp.mgname = "singlenode" end) |
00:33 |
kaeza |
but it's still using v6 |
00:34 |

maybe you need the switching station |
00:36 |
Taoki |
How do you connect different voltage cables in technic? |
00:36 |
Taoki |
Wanna give this a try till I head off to bed |
00:36 |
ShadowNinja |
Taoki: There is a converter but it is broken ATM. |
00:38 |
Taoki |
Can't find how to power battery boxes :P Since they only connect to HV cables and generators to LV cables |
00:39 |
Taoki |
any idea? |
00:39 |
Taoki |
Sadly technic doesn't have a tutorial yet |
00:39 |
ShadowNinja |
This part at least uses tabs for indentation -- Where it indents at all. And I bet about 70% of this is duplicated in the LV and MV wires. |
00:39 |
ShadowNinja |
Taoki: Use a nuclear reactor or a HV solar array. |
00:42 |
Taoki |
Works, nice |
00:42 |
Taoki |
Any difference between solar panels or solar arrays? I'm getting the impression of some duplicate stuff at first |
00:43 |
ShadowNinja |
Solar arays are a lot more powerfull. Sollar pannals are also only LV. |
00:45 |
Taoki |
nice |
00:45 |

RBA let me be part of the technic team BTW, and gave me commit access. So now I feel bad and weird that I'm an admin for something I barely even understand yet >.< |
00:48 |
ShadowNinja |
The thing we realy need is communication. We have no way, other than issues to contact a certain colaborator... |
00:52 |
Taoki |
BTW. I mentioned to RBA that I'm thinking about adding my Structures mod to technic_game, with a set of industrial buildings using all of the machines and stuff. You can let me know if you agree, if anyone else is interested or not |
00:52 |
Taoki |
Need to go in a minute now tho |
00:53 |
ShadowNinja |
I haven't looked at it. It is fine with me as long as it doesn't slow the game/mapgen down much. |
00:54 |
Taoki |
Not at all. Especially not that it uses schematics |
00:54 |

Only tested it locally thoi |

Is there a way to make the world... smaller? I really don't need this much space, it's huge like X-Box. |
02:56 |
VanessaE |
the world is only as big as that which you've explored. |
02:56 |
VanessaE |
to keep it small, simply don't explore outside of whatever you consider to be an acceptable range |
02:56 |
Ego |
Well, I was trying to see if the world ever.. ended. |
02:56 |

Lol |
02:57 |

it does, at around +/- 31000 in all directions, but the whole thing is not rendered initially |

That is sofa king huge... Lol |
02:57 |

correct, it renders and stores that which you've explored (and surrounding areas) |

I've got a little question about minetest.get_connected_players(). The API says that's it is a list with ObjectRefs. How can I access one in it? I saved minetest.get_connected_players() to a variable (let's call it X) and tried to access X.singleplayer => But it's nil |
09:29 |
webdesigner97 |
Or is there a better way to check wether a player is online? |

09:33 |
webdesigner97 |
what do you mean? |
09:34 |
Yrol_Denjeah |
As some mods depend on others and because i am getting "configuration is inconstistent"-errors, is the order of mods important? |
09:35 |
kahrl |
it is important but the mod loader handles it automatically |
09:35 |
kahrl |
that message usually means you're missing a required mod |
09:36 |

not sure if the GUI shows what mod that is, but debug.txt definitely will |

If i have a mod and it has in its "depends.txt" something written like "12345", to what exactly refers that? A: The name of the folder where the files of mod "12345" are in, or B: Some name that is written in one of the configurationfiles of mod "12345", C: something else |

kahrl, so A, thankees, followupquestion: i have a mod ( pipeworks ) where it says in the depends.txt, that "mesecons?" is required, but windpws does not aceppt "?" in file or foldernames, is that a typo or some specific option in that depends file? |
10:10 |
kahrl |
oh, that's a special character and means it's an optional dependency |
10:10 |
kahrl |
so it actually refers to mesecons |
10:11 |
Yrol_Denjeah |
alright |
10:11 |

so that means you don't need mesecons, but pipeworks can work with it if it is installed |

It is about 10:30am here |

17:34 |
Calinou |
let's threaten OldCoder to release nvidia driver source code, then escape as if he was in max payne 3 |
17:34 |
Calinou |
</silly plans> |
17:35 |
OldCoder |
Hm? |
17:35 |
* OldCoder |
is confused |
17:36 |
* OldCoder |
is not affiliated with NVidia and has given up on the proprietary drivers |
17:36 |
OldCoder |
<sillycon plans> |
17:36 |
Calinou |
lol |
17:37 |
OldCoder |
Try managing about 5 giant installers for proprietary drivers... they keep dropping support for old chipsets so you need to all the old packages around... not compatible with newer systems. Heck with it. |
17:37 |
* OldCoder |
is Nouveau now |
17:37 |
* OldCoder |
thinks FOSS is not a loss |
17:38 |
OldCoder |
john_minetest, yes; balance is towards the open version now |
17:38 |
OldCoder |
john_minetest, I know we're nearly there because Celestia works with my distro now |
17:38 |
OldCoder |
That one is pretty demanding |
17:38 |
Exio4 |
[14:37:49] * OldCoder thinks FOSS is not a loss |
17:39 |
Exio4 |
it isn't |
17:39 |
Exio4 |
it is way better as you can actually let compilers optimize stuff in case of old-hardware or low-end or when you need the "highest" performance |
17:40 |
OldCoder |
Yep |
17:40 |
Calinou |
it also prevents bias 8) |
17:40 |
Calinou |
or makes it harder |
17:40 |
Calinou |
* OldCoder is Nouveau now |
17:40 |
Calinou |
nouveau is a joke performance and opengl-wise |
17:40 |
OldCoder |
But it works |
17:40 |
Calinou |
it does |
17:40 |
OldCoder |
Proprietary does not... not well for a distro maintainer |
17:40 |
Calinou |
but 20× slower than nvidia for me |
17:41 |
Calinou |
24 vs 600 FPS on sauerbraten |
17:41 |
OldCoder |
Really? It is probably better in some cases |
17:41 |
Calinou |
nvidia supports their cards for 6 years |
17:41 |
Calinou |
never, OldCoder |
17:41 |
OldCoder |
And then throws away the cards |
17:41 |
Calinou |
except for 2D accel but who cares :P |
17:41 |
Calinou |
6 years is enough by far |
17:41 |
OldCoder |
Nope |
17:41 |
Calinou |
the 8800GTs get pwned by a GTX650 |
17:41 |
* OldCoder |
has laptops older than that |
17:41 |
Calinou |
old laptop shrug |
17:42 |
Calinou |
usually the battery inside these laptops would be dead anyway |
17:42 |
OldCoder |
old laptops is tops |
17:42 |
Calinou |
nvidia also has a decent legacy driver |
17:42 |
* OldCoder |
likes old laptops |
17:42 |
Exio4 |
sadly, when a laptop gets old you can't "do l33t stuff" like a desktop for making it live a bit more |
17:42 |
OldCoder |
nvidia made me support multiple installers |
17:42 |
Exio4 |
you need to a buy a complete new one |
17:42 |
Calinou |
you buy another one, laptops are trashable :P |
17:42 |
OldCoder |
Exio4, nah... I got people who patch them together |
17:43 |
OldCoder |
Replaced keyboard on Inspiron about 4 times |
17:43 |

The one I am on right now is used and has had a number of tweaks |
17:43 |
OldCoder |
Pretty slow but gets the job done... hmm is the bot going to be angry? |
17:43 |
Exio4 |
upgrading the cpu here is buying a new one that plugs into my mobo, shutdown the pc, do black magic, in 30 minutes i'm using a new cpu |
17:43 |
Exio4 |
changing the keyboard is unplugging the old one and using the new |
17:43 |
OldCoder |
Limit is 5 lines in a short period of time? |
17:43 |
OldCoder |
Yep |
17:43 |
OldCoder |
I used desktops from 1981 on |
17:44 |
Exio4 |
the laptops are way more "static" than desktops |
17:44 |
OldCoder |
Actually did not buy first laptop until about two years ago |
17:44 |
Exio4 |
and expensive, and worse perf/$ |
17:45 |

Static how wow how are static they? |
17:45 |

17:46 |

17:46 |

17:46 |
OldCoder |
A bit tougher with laptops |
17:46 |
Taoki |
Why are loops dosallowed in mesecons / luacontroller? They're an important part of why scripting is useful for it at all |
17:46 |

I have a question. I noticed that apart from meta:set_string, there's a meta:set_float and meta:set_int. If setting a number in the meta of a node, is it absolutely necessary to use those? Of if for example you'd do meta:set_string("field", "6.34") it would still be valied? |

Got a big problem if not. But from what I seen that should be fine |

Taoki, afaik, something like liquids, but with a few "levels", to make things like snow |
19:27 |

I downloaded "Flat World" world, it's got silt in it. |
19:27 |

water/lava can be sloped, leveled nodeboxes can't |

maybe it's that |

Ego, you don't need a flat world |
19:27 |

19:27 |
Taoki |
Calinou: Oh... so solid blocks but with a "consumption" level, which specifies how low the top surface is? |
19:27 |

likely |
19:28 |

it's possibly just to save node definitions |

Awesome! That might work for my "natural dirt slabs" idea :) |
19:28 |

i'll read the PR's code to confirm |

So we can have top dirt nodes have different levels, for smooth terrain. But without even a different type of node |

semi-smooth hills, yeah |
20:01 |
Kacey |
Taoki, i only know up to MV mechanics |
20:01 |
Calinou |
Taoki, if you had smooth hills, you would still have blocky caves and stuff like that. |
20:01 |
Calinou |
so it wouldn't look consistent and good |
20:01 |
Calinou |
and blocky seas, too |
20:02 |

Calinou: Smooth cave floors could work too |
20:02 |
Calinou |
what about ceilings, walls, and all that :P |
20:02 |
Calinou |
and handling player collisions :P |
20:03 |
proller |
now there is problem with leveled nodes and building |
20:03 |
NakedFury |
better to have a mix of smooth and blocky areas |
20:03 |
Taoki |
Ceilings and walls could matter less. And player collisions should automatically work |
20:03 |
Calinou |
lol nope |
20:03 |
Taoki |
NakedFury: yeah |
20:03 |
Calinou |
Taoki, oh, if you want to use leveled nodeboxes |
20:03 |
Calinou |
not flowing liquids, which would be actually "smooth" terrain, that is not blocky |
20:04 |
Taoki |
I don't want to blindly use them, just hoping they'd make smooth terrain too |
20:04 |
Taoki |
yeah |
20:04 |
Calinou |
the problem is that steep hills still won't look "smooth" |
20:04 |
Calinou |
plateaus, even worse |
20:04 |
NakedFury |
then add certain smooth biomes |
20:05 |

would be inconsistent |

only one node for several levels |

20:49 |
Jordach |
now we need auto_nodebox |
20:49 |
Calinou |
facedir_fixed_texture too |
20:49 |
Jordach |
so there are six possible faces (eg, how xpanes too) |
20:49 |
Calinou |
would be a facedir that does not rotate textures :P |
20:52 |
Jordach |
Calinou, you know how there's X amount of nodes for xpanes |
20:52 |
Jordach |
there should be a nodebox called auto-connected |
20:52 |
Calinou |
like raillike, but for nodeboxes |
20:52 |

raillike_nodebox? :P |
20:52 |

would be nice |

would have client-side prediction, too |
20:52 |

so you define six tables and then let the engine attach them |

so wires wont have hundreds of node |
20:52 |

nodes* |

perhaps you ought to consider constructing your own "game". if you're running under linux. place all mods in one folder and symlink those you want. that's most practical |
22:08 |
ieksobes |
I'm not really good with these terms. That means a separated game folder and changed default_game= line in conf? |
22:09 |

And yes, it's debian x86_64. |

Can somebody tell me why my worlds look like this? http://imgur.com/FsYG8mp |
22:29 |
Exio4 |
how can you actually reproduce that? |
22:31 |
Exio4 |
anticheat is funny |
22:33 |
whirm |
Exio4: how to reproduce it?, I just build minetest from git, it happens using irrlich 17 and 18, with or without mods, and using indev or v6 |
22:34 |
Exio4 |
i don't actually know, that doesn't happen to me and never happened |
22:35 |
kahrl |
what mapgen mods do you use? e.g. moretrees |
22:35 |
whirm |
kahrl: technic game |
22:35 |
whirm |
but I'm almost sure it happens without any mods too |
22:35 |
whirm |
let me check |
22:37 |
sokomine |
yes, new versions do have a configuration tab for mods (and, if you're running on linux, it's best to download and compile the newest version) |
22:38 |
whirm |
http://imgur.com/VtEXtbT <-- kahrl this is with vanilla minetest_game, even worse, everything dark |
22:39 |
sokomine |
ieksobes: create a new folder in games, i.e. games/my_game/mods and add symlinks to all mods you want into that folder. that's usually the best way. you'll then have to klick on the right "game" type in the singleplayer menu. they're shown at the bottom of the screen |
22:45 |
Kacey |
whirm, those shadows just need a lighting update place a torch and then pick it back up |
22:47 |
VanessaE |
Kacey: a trick I learned for large swaths of bad lighting that doesn't wanna update is worldedit. not //fixlight, but making a big tract of sand or gravel and causing it to fall (then clean it up with //replace sand air) works when fixlight doesn't. |
22:48 |
whirm |
Kacey: nope, the torch makes light, but doesn't fix the lighting |
22:48 |
Kacey |
then try what VanessaE said |
22:49 |
VanessaE |
you may have to get up pretty high to get the sand up above the top of the badly-lit blocks. |
22:50 |
whirm |
the fixlight command doesnt exist according to my minetest :D, how does this worldedit works? |
22:50 |
Exio4 |
it is a mod :P |
22:50 |
