06:35 xiong I have finally found a little gold... and it appears to have no practical application. I smelted it into gold ingots but I can make no tool or other object from the ingots; and they will not alloy with copper, bronze, or steel.

Wiki says a lava bucket will smelt for double the time of a tree; this is better but not extraordinary or worth the risk.
