It was fun while I was watching it, but it left some major holes when I thought about it after I was done watching it |

I was talking to someone a bit ago, and he wanted all items (for example, lumps and ingots) to be placable as nodes. It could help with labelling chests that contain that item, or used on servers with shops to label automated shop nodes. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? He plans to try to build it, and if it doesn't go as well as planned, I'll build it, but only if there is a chance it will actually be pulled. |
04:08 |

[0gb_us] |
Okay, how do I help? |
04:11 |
ssieb |
kaeza: do you have any wordpress sites open? |
04:11 |
VanessaE |
I need to override a particular field of a node if found, presumably by indexing it via the 'minetest.registered_nodes' table. |
04:11 |
kaeza |
nope |
04:11 |
VanessaE |
in particular, I want to force the node in question to have paramtyp2 = "facedir", but I can't safely redefine the node. |
04:11 |
ssieb |
ok, I've found that leaving a wordpress site open makes my firefox run at 100% after a while... |
04:11 |
kaeza |
ssieb, why the question? |
04:11 |
kaeza |
ah |
04:11 |
[0gb_us] |
Why can it not be safely reregistered? |
04:12 |
kaeza |
no only forum.minetest.net and a couple other tabs |
04:12 |
VanessaE |
[0gb_us]: because they're from stairsplus :) |
04:12 |
[0gb_us] |
How does that make it unsafe to reregister the nodes? |
04:12 |
kaeza |
(btw, FF bitched about a script in FB) |
04:12 |
VanessaE |
[0gb_us]: I only need this forced setting code for testing purposes. Once I'm 100% sure the rest of my code works, I will actually remove the forced setting. |
04:13 |
* kaeza |
runs sudo apt-get autoremove firefox |
04:13 |
[0gb_us] |
To set it, you HAVE to reregister. |
04:13 |
VanessaE |
shit. |
04:13 |
khonkhortisan |
I watch the channel and no one says anything. I look away, and that's the time everyone decides to talk. |
04:13 |
VanessaE |
I can't just overwrite the value that should, in theory, be in.. oh. |
04:13 |
[0gb_us] |
Set the value in the definition, then pass the definition back to register_node(). |
04:13 |
VanessaE |
I'll bet it was working just fine, but my code is being executed before stairsplus. |
04:14 |
* VanessaE |
plugs it into stairsplus directly. |
04:14 |
[0gb_us] |
Put stairsplus in your dependancies. |
04:14 |
khonkhortisan |
VanessaE, https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/661 ? |
04:14 |
VanessaE |
[0gb_us]: exactly the plan. |
04:17 |
[0gb_us] |
Any other thought on placing items? Or just "worthless feature, install item frames even though they needlessly use entities"? |
04:21 |
VanessaE |
damn it. |
04:22 |
khonkhortisan |
Would an item node use the item texture surrounded by transparency on every face? |
04:22 |
khonkhortisan |
Like the hand node from minimal? |
04:23 |
khonkhortisan |
If it was possible to make 3d particles then item frames wouldn't use entities |
04:23 |
[0gb_us] |
It wouldn't be a cubic node. |
04:24 |
[0gb_us] |
Most would probably be signlike. |
04:27 |
VanessaE |
khonkhortisan: doesn't seem to be helping at all. There must be something else I'm missing. |
04:27 |
VanessaE |
(something specific to stairsplus) |
04:35 |
VanessaE |
ok, my code works fine if I tweak stairsplus to give facedir to all nodes by default (this is absolutely necessary anyway) |
04:35 |
VanessaE |
now if calinou would just show up. :) |
04:35 |
jordan4ibanez |
There are many things you can think about, death and the fabric of reality is probably the worst thing to though |
04:37 |
[0gb_us] |
OH! VanessaE, I figured out the issue. |
04:37 |
VanessaE |
oh? |
04:37 |
[0gb_us] |
You need to iterate over the node's definition, and copy it to a new array. |
04:37 |
[0gb_us] |
THEN add the facedir thing, and reregister. |
04:37 |
VanessaE |
oy. :( |
04:37 |
VanessaE |
well it's ok, I already tested the code the way it will be used in practice anyway |

I play with linux from time to time, learn what I need when I need it. |

05:26 |

I game on Linux. |
05:26 |

you should do something that makes you happy, i can't picture you happy everytime you come across win lol |

sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls |
05:27 |

If I can't make it run without Windows, I only use it if required to. No one demands that I play games, so that rules out Windows as a gaming platform for me. |

THis system here plays Win games Awesome... Except my dumbass put an ATI card in now NO OpenGL games work!! |

on my old p4 win was slower than linux (for a time) but on the HP they're the same |

I had an old eMachine that had bad caps someone gave me, $6 on ebay and that bitch ROCKS now. |
05:30 |
[0gb_us] |
mauvebic: If the system crashes weren't caused by Windows, why did removing Windows instantly fix the problem? And why has the problem not returned? |
05:30 |

Linux is underfunded, and is STILL better than Windows. |

I'm not saying there is a good funding source to find. You just asked who I blamed. |
05:40 |

I blame funding. |
05:40 |

and most of the linux base seems to be contrarians, people who will always take issue with something, so why give to such a charity? |

[0gb_us] |
But even WITH funding, Windows is a pile of crap. |

Also, there is so much duplication of effort, with the different distros. |

05:43 |

or people who earn a real living from OSS and advocate that programmers should give away their work |
05:48 |

Yes, paid Linux support is available, and as Linux is always a work in progress, it will never be truly fixed. |

10:11 |
VanessaE |
Ok, I'm lost. Help? |
10:12 |
VanessaE |
..and I'm doing this inside a register_node() call |
10:12 |
kaeza |
depends exactly on what you're trying to do |
10:13 |
kaeza |
do you want to have different "strength" depending on if shift is down? |
10:13 |
kaeza |
or do you want different actions? |
10:13 |
VanessaE |
I want to detect if the user left-clicks with an item in their hand. If left click + shift, do one thing. If left click alone, do the default digging action. |
10:14 |
kaeza |
hmm... |
10:14 |
VanessaE |
if I use the on_use callback, I can detect it easily enough, but I can't figure out how to call the old, default digging action when I need to. |
10:15 |
kaeza |
I'm not sure about that with left-click |
10:15 |
kaeza |
with right-click it should be easy |
10:15 |
VanessaE |
it is...except of course shift = sneak for some folks |
10:16 |
kaeza |
as you said, you either have the default tool action, or you fake it and get no crack anim |
10:16 |
VanessaE |
yes. |
10:17 |
kaeza |
I don't think that's possible currently, sorry :/ |
10:17 |
kaeza |
can't you use a separate action for left and right click? |
10:17 |
VanessaE |
wouldn't help in this case |
10:18 |
VanessaE |
I don't want to interfere with the normal digging code |
10:18 |
VanessaE |
right click to place, left click to dig, like always. |
10:18 |
VanessaE |
so what I need is a graceful way of detecting some kind of event the user can set off - so that I can toggle a flag. |
10:18 |
kaeza |
and shift-rclick would be too cumbersome I guess |
10:19 |
VanessaE |
shift right click is easy...but it conflicts with sneaking |
10:20 |
VanessaE |
I'm working rewriting stairsplus to use 6d facedir |
10:20 |
kaeza |
I guess that is nope.avi |
10:21 |
VanessaE |
and I need to be able to toggle a flag to decide whether a given node should turned sideways on placement or just right side up/upside down. |
10:21 |
kaeza |
if you override on_use (to detect shift+click) you can't call the degault digging code |
10:21 |
kaeza |
-g+f |
10:21 |
VanessaE |
lame. |
10:22 |
kaeza |
ah... uhm... I guess I understandnow |
10:23 |
kaeza |
you want to place a node in three ways depending on mouse button and shift state |
10:23 |
VanessaE |
yes. |
10:23 |
VanessaE |
sorta. |
10:23 |
kaeza |
*and* you need to be able to dig when you have this node in hand |
10:23 |
VanessaE |
yes. |

I already know how to detect if I am pointing at a floor, wall, or ceiling, so that part's solved. |
10:24 |
VanessaE |
and I know how to rotate the node to the right orientation in the case of the sideways objects. |
10:24 |
VanessaE |
and a routine to toggle the flag that enables/disables that sideways mode is easy. |
10:24 |
VanessaE |
the problem is finding a graceful, user-friendly way to call that toggle function. |
10:25 |
VanessaE |
shift-left-click would have been ideal. |
10:25 |

oh, one issue I didn't do: |
11:01 |
VanessaE |
I only tested the conversion routine against iron stone bricks. There's a call at the bottom of stairsplus_convert.lua that does it |
11:02 |
VanessaE |
duplicate that call for every material type you want to convert |
11:02 |
VanessaE |
(I suggest adding the necessary code to the register_stair_slab_panel_micro() function_ |
11:02 |

11:04 |

I thought there was VanessaE's plants lib way of regrowing them |
17:53 |
VanessaE |
PilzAdam: no, those flowers don't use plants_lib |
17:53 |
VanessaE |
they're mapgen-based + slow spreading growth |
17:53 |
PilzAdam |
lol, intercal 128 and chance 256, are you kidding? |

17:54 |

I think that's the plan :) |
17:54 |

PilzAdam: I made it really slow so you wouldn't complain that flowers are too easy to get. |
17:55 |
PilzAdam |
also s/flowers:flower_*/flowers:*/g |
17:55 |
VanessaE |
now where they're added to flowers/mapgen.lua, that code should be moved to the main mapgen instead, so that the routines from lines 2 through 30 or so don't have to be duplicated. |
17:55 |
VanessaE |
PilzAdam: only if you provide aliases - otherwise that is guaranteed to ruin maps |
17:56 |
PilzAdam |
sure, aliases then |

i am replicating xycraft with xytest |
22:28 |
RealBadAngel |
try to describe, maybe in forums, how it should work |
22:30 |
Kacey |
i cant describe how it wouldwork |
22:30 |
VanessaE |
<PilzAdam> (for the log) turning stuff to dry shrub in the desert is fine as long as things can live for at least a brief time. I'm okay with the selection box being changed, but I don't think it needs to cover the whole node for something that's only half the volume of the node at most. |

for making connected glass node look like one big glass and not look like individual glass nodes? |

(for the log) when you will want to add certain smaller nodebox to already placed in node set of nodeboxes, such change is a MUST HAVE |
22:32 |
RealBadAngel |
its called placing prediction |
22:34 |
RealBadAngel |
for example adding frame corners - selected face shall be highlighted with shape of a box showin which edge will be used when put |
22:36 |
RealBadAngel |
to make story short, it shall show the user what will happen if he place wielded nodebox there |

a) such glass draw type is almost finished and coming soon |
22:38 |
Kacey |
aaah |
22:38 |
Kacey |
and what about the multi-block function? |
22:39 |
RealBadAngel |
b) i will definitely try to implement storage tanks with it |
22:39 |
Kacey |
i want tanks in xytest D: |

the multiblock, you mean storages (tanks) bigger than a single node? |
22:42 |
RealBadAngel |
engine can provide way to make them look so |
22:43 |
RealBadAngel |
but its up to modder to decide what to do with them |
22:43 |
NakedFury |
Kacey that is exactly what I posted in that minecraft link |
22:43 |
NakedFury |
but also works for bookshelves and 2 chests side by side |
22:45 |
RealBadAngel |
btw, if you folks want to have chests that will open when accesed i suggest to start learning blender |
22:45 |
RealBadAngel |
because it will be possible |
22:46 |
RealBadAngel |
but animations will be needed just :) |
22:46 |
[0gb_us] |
Why would we want opening chests? |
22:46 |
NakedFury |
animated opening chests |
22:46 |
RealBadAngel |
because theyre cool as hell? :) |
22:46 |
NakedFury |
yeah man |
22:47 |
NakedFury |
and would animated pistons or pumps work better too? |
22:47 |
RealBadAngel |
what i mean exactly is drawtype mesh is coming soon |
22:47 |

They don't seem cool to me, but whatevr. |

Sparkling crystals does sound good though. |
22:50 |

sparkling crystals can be done now with just an animation to the textures |

that is exactly what im afraid of ;) |

VanessaE |
heh |
22:55 |
VanessaE |
you're worried it'll be another thing like the argument you had with the big glass slabs thing |
22:56 |
RealBadAngel |
well, im thinkin now how to display part of the texture |
22:56 |
RealBadAngel |
to represent amount of liquid in the storage tank |
22:56 |
RealBadAngel |
well i do know |
22:57 |
VanessaE |
storage tank? you mean pipeworks? |
22:57 |
mauvebic |
use 1 node instead of ten, with nice formspec (or pipewrench tool), what i did |
22:57 |
Kacey |
no, multi-block tanks |
