im not crazy about the new full water level: placing a pump above it makes it look hovering |
00:42 |
VanessaE |
yeah, me neither |
00:42 |
VanessaE |
the same thing happens to waterlilies, seaweed, anything else that's raillike or signlike |
00:42 |
mauvebic |
engine or lua change? |
00:43 |
VanessaE |
engine change - shaders. |
00:43 |
VanessaE |
I suppose I could extend the bottom of the node by exploiting the visual_scale= parameter.. |
00:43 |
mauvebic |
so theres no way to set water level to 100% of the node? |
00:43 |
VanessaE |
yeah, turn shaders off. |
00:44 |
mauvebic |
anything that can be fixed? |
00:44 |
VanessaE |
I'm not sure how, but yeah it's fixable in the shader files used in the game |
00:45 |
PilzAdam |
c55 said it should be done in c++ and not in shaders |

grrr, is anyone having 'over swap usage' of minetest when joining a server with a lot of mods? |
00:46 |
Exio |
| ram: 117/877 | swp: 1467/580 | |
00:47 |
Doc22_ |
i think (someone correct me if im wrong) that it means that your hard drive's swap partition is too small |
00:47 |
Exio |
mt runs smooth, 55~ FPS, but that is annoying :P |
00:47 |
Exio |
Doc22_: 2 GB aren't enough? wut |
00:47 |
Doc22_ |
a lot of mods can easily take up that much |
00:47 |
Doc22_ |
but im not sure |
00:47 |
Doc22_ |
thats all I can think of |
00:47 |
VanessaE |
well that sucks...visual_scale is ignored when using nodeboxes :( |
00:48 |
Exio |
Doc22_: for me it is weird because mt runs smooth ... i dont have any lagspike or whatever |
00:48 |
Doc22_ |
nonono |
00:48 |
Doc22_ |
swap wont affect fps |
00:48 |
Doc22_ |
swap is what is used for copying /moving files |
00:49 |
Exio |
? |
00:49 |
Doc22_ |
in this case, installing them |
00:49 |
Exio |
uh? |
00:49 |
Doc22_ |
(the mods) |
00:49 |
Doc22_ |
and it cant hold it all at once |
00:49 |
Doc22_ |
its part of the hard drive partition |
00:50 |
Exio |
Doc22_: i think you don't get my point |
00:50 |
VanessaE |
Doc22_: um, no. that's not what swap is normally used for. it is used for programs that need to allocate memory but can't if the physical RAM is already entirely spoken for (or nearly so). When that happens, the OS maps some swap space on disk into memory and uses that to operate from. In theory, only old, seldom-used code gets pushed out to swap first, so that physical RAM can still be used for programs that are actually ru |
00:50 |
VanessaE |
nning. |
00:50 |
Exio |
heeey VanessaE |
00:50 |
Doc22_ |
hmm |
00:50 |
Doc22_ |
well im not an expert |
00:51 |
Doc22_ |
thats why I added (correct me if im wrong) |
00:51 |
Exio |
i started writing something like that |
00:51 |
Doc22_ |
just throwing stuff out there lol |
00:51 |
Exio |
:( |
00:51 |
VanessaE |
if you have 1024 MB of RAM and you ned to allocate say 1500 MB of RAM for whatever programs are running, about 500 MB has to be pushed off to disk, so the OS will start by moving data out of memory that hasn't been used in a while. |
00:51 |
VanessaE |
need* |
00:53 |
VanessaE |
(assuming that there are no >1024MB chunks that MUST be locked into RAM) |
00:54 |
VanessaE |
and yes, operating out of swap most definitely WILL kill your FPS if there's enough swap activity, especially if some of Minetest's code has to operate from there. |
00:54 |
Exio |
or at least it will cause some 'lagspike' when loading the stuff |
00:55 |
VanessaE |
Exio: that depends on how much has to be recalled into physical memory at any one time. |
00:56 |
VanessaE |
if you're talking about thousands of little 1MB lumps of data filling up your swap, you'll probably see it as erratic, low FPS. If it's big chunks (say over 10MB), it'll look more like lag. |

"3 to 8 decoder" |
04:38 |
Kacey |
alright obviously my math was wrong |
04:39 |
Kacey |
i noticed with the 2,4,8 and so on decoders were exponential |
04:39 |
VanessaE |
yup |
04:39 |
VanessaE |
a 4 bit input would decode to 16 outputs. |
04:39 |
Kacey |
but 3 is not |
04:40 |

1 bit decodes to 2 outputs. 2 bits to 3. 3 to 8. 4 to 16, 5 to 32, and so on. |
04:40 |

2 bits to 4 |

right |
04:41 |
Kacey |
only even bits i gues |
04:41 |

2 ^ #bits |

= # of outputs. |
04:41 |

well for every position there are two possibilities so i (think) bit pow 2 |

2 to the power of #bits. |

maybe this question is stupid, but is it possible to implement shiny, mirror-like surfaces using shaders? they need not be truly reflective |
12:15 |
Jeija |
I was trying that, and it should be possible somehow using shaders. I had some strange blueish reflection-stripes in the end, but I couldn't have realistic water refraction. However I managed to code water waves: https://github.com/Jeija/minetest/tree/shader_playground |

a question for lua coders, is it possible in minetest to use functions from other mods? modA e.g. has func_a can modB use func_a ? |
12:56 |
TB|Vibe-X |
or are they seperated |
12:56 |
kaeza |
yes |
12:56 |

if that function is not local, then yes |

too convoluted IMHO |
12:58 |
sapier |
I'm not very talented in creating guis |
12:58 |

you should add a label between the "Price/Selection/etc" row and the player inv |
12:58 |

to separate it a bit |
12:59 |

proably reducing upper inv to 2 lines and moving "selection ... takeaway" up? |

maybe a trader selling 16 goods is fine enough |

my large bridges do that. it may happen that you fall down from them from one side. but it mostly works |
17:35 |
PilzAdam |
rubenwardy, I dont recommend make nodeboxes bigger than one node, the textures look really ugly when you do it (to be more precise the texture gets sized to the size of one node and the "other" node just has the color of the last pixel in this direction) |
17:35 |
VanessaE |

NekoGloop |

sokomine, have you been thrown 5000 blocks from spawn when logging in? i spawned on top an other player and couldn't move, and then his character had some blocks in it, like if they were dropped and tangled in him |
17:41 |
VanessaE |
(the same holds true for the default 16px texture also) |
17:42 |
PilzAdam |
VanessaE, are you crazy? you cant counter that; its a fact that one side doesnt work correclty |
17:42 |
VanessaE |
PilzAdam: then explain why it works for me? |
17:42 |
sokomine |
pilzadam: those things may happen. but grapical glitches are common anyway. when running/restarting a world several times without exiting the game inbetween i loose more and more images and get more and more errors. even under normal circumstances there are random textures missing (i.e. whole block has the same color) for no apparent reason |

the fridge in the screenshot is tiled vertically, your screenshot is horizontal - try it vertically and see what happens |
17:45 |
sokomine |
mika: maybe connected to the new player attachment system. but that gave us 3d-players and carts :-) the bugs are less worse than those irritating 2d-players for me |
17:46 |
PilzAdam |
VanessaE, are the textures resized? or are they just put on the nodebox if they are too big |
17:46 |
VanessaE |
they are just put on straight. |
17:46 |
VanessaE |
no resizing. |
17:46 |
sokomine |
vanessa: that might be true. the fridge certainly works well and has a good, working texture. plus it goes up...not sideways. so trouble with the collision box not beeing large enough or working just from one side does not happen |
17:46 |
VanessaE |
they are tiled (or supposed to be) in all directions to cover the whole nodebox |
17:48 |
PilzAdam |
VanessaE, and again wrong: the textures are first resized at the size of a node and the repeated to match the nodebox |
17:48 |
thexyz |
VanessaE: if you want to avoid that glitch, don't make nodebox bigger than node |
17:49 |

they all take that space in the game because you cant place 2 smaller nodeboxes in the same place |
17:56 |
thexyz |
as API doc says |
17:59 |
sokomine |
there had been some situations where i wished for two nodeboxes in the same space. my houses have a smaller magnification factor than most other houses compared to real ones. but too many nodes make the game load slow - and i can't see most of the normal stair+-stars anyway :-( |

but how about the doors? they might work as enlarged nodeboxes. it might just be that they are less efficient at closing off a space at the upper part |

Obiewan1111 |
Say I make a really big map, seriously big, infact and upload it, if I put liscence: WTTPL (Or whatever that is), is it completely legit? |
21:46 |
Obiewan1111 |
What does the licence even mean? |

Obiewan1111: How do you want people to be able to use the map? |

sokomine, you can already do that with a mod if you'd really like to |

but with version 7 of the mapgen, making a totally flat map is trivial |

If I had known how to gather air, I would have stockpiles some before the glitch was removed. |

us_0gb: and /giveme air seems to be off limits too :( |

Really? Nice. |

nothin' says you can't just fetch from the commit where the bug was most evident ;) |

Also, I don't have /give on the server that I want air on. |

I just tried "/giveme air". It does still work. |

Awesome! |
23:10 |
marktraceur |
I mean, stupid. But also awesome. |
23:10 |
us_0gb |
"/giveme ignore" also works. |
23:11 |
Uberi |
huh |
23:11 |
marktraceur |
us_0gb: That's weird |
23:11 |
us_0gb |
I think when I tried "/giveme unknown", it failed though, even though that IS a regestered node. |
23:11 |
us_0gb |
Or maybe it worked. I forget. |
23:12 |
marktraceur |
us_0gb: Maybe it's supposed to be default:unknown ? |
23:12 |
us_0gb |
No. The code registers ":unknown". |
23:12 |
Uberi |
try __builtin:unknown |
23:12 |
Uberi |
ah |
23:12 |
Uberi |
well probably won't work |
23:12 |
Uberi |
I tried /giveme : to get the player hand and it failed |
23:13 |
us_0gb |
Nive. But you have to remove the preceding colen. |
23:13 |
us_0gb |
But that would be an empty string |
23:13 |
us_0gb |
"/giveme :air" does not work. |

Bye! |

Does anyone have really vehement opinions on vendor/currency mods? |
23:58 |
VanessaE |
I don't care much for such mods to be honest |
23:58 |
Uberi |
yes |
23:58 |
Uberi |
well not really |
23:58 |
Uberi |
I prefer to trade actual items instead |
23:59 |
Uberi |
like MESE crystals, for example |
23:59 |
Uberi |
MESE is a great currency |
23:59 |
marktraceur |
VanessaE: I'm inclined to agree, but having some ability to trade is good, and currency seems like the cleanest way to do it |
23:59 |
Uberi |
plus there is natural inflation from the mining industry |
23:59 |
marktraceur |
Uberi: My understanding is that mese is used to create currency, so it essentially is currency except that it's broken into littler bits when you craft |
