Cause I'm doing it again since it's been I think nearly a year, so if anyone would like to participate, let me know, basically I gather basic information such as OS & location (continent), then what changes you think should be made |

Anybody knows why formspec doesn't show 1.2 but 1.200123blahblahblah ? |
08:04 |

hmm because your not truncating the value? |

But, how do I know the value? I mean, I can't just truncating 1.6999blahblah to 1.6. |

that leads to: local deserialize=minetest.deserialize(file:read("*a")) |

16:50 |
rdococ |
tenplus1 == eleven |
16:50 |
tenplus1 |
*howls* |
16:52 |
rdococ |
oh, right, people probably don't know what I mean |
16:52 |
rdococ |
lol |
16:53 |
rdococ |
in a game of werewolf (though there are many flavours), there are usually a pack of 'werewolves', and a group of 'villagers', and the villagers, with help from special roles, try to find and vote out the wolves |
16:54 |
Shara |
I'd be curious to see how you made it work |
16:54 |
rdococ |
depending, again, on the exact flavour you're playing, someone being voted out (suspected as a werewolf by the majority of the village, basically) could either mean jailing or full-on hanging |
16:54 |
tenplus1 |
gotta shoot them with silver bullets, if you shoot villager you're out |
16:54 |
rdococ |
I haven't started yet, though |
16:55 |
rdococ |
I've actually played two favours of the game online (well, three, but one wasn't to my taste). one is on IRC, and the other is on Roblox. |
16:56 |
rdococ |
s/fav/flav/ |
16:56 |
rdococ |
I was thinking of creating a version on minetest |
16:57 |
rdococ |
oh, and each night, the werewolves vote on someone to hunt |
16:57 |
rdococ |
though, again, it depends on the version you play |
17:00 |
Shara |
My worry would be - what happens to the players who are out? Kind of boring for them |
17:00 |
rdococ |
there may be a lobby with parkour and stuff |
17:00 |
rdococ |
my idea is that there would be a lobby, which would have things to occupy players who are out |
17:02 |
rdococ |
then there would be a daytime town area, for voting other players out. night could either be done with buildings inside the town area, or a separate resting place-ish area |
17:02 |
rdococ |
either way, at night, the players should be teleported, and nametags hidden |
17:03 |
tenplus1 |
lolol, nice one krock |
17:06 |

Getting so tired of players telling me they've paid for ad removal on their apps because official Android MT is worse than the apps. |
21:36 |
Shara |
Why is this??? |
21:36 |
sfan5 |
nobody wants to work on the android app |
21:37 |
Shara |
Yet how many devs have worked on some of those apps? |
21:38 |
Shara |
It's ridiculous. |
21:43 |
Krock |
it's ridiculous that those who would be interested in working on the app aren't into open-source or contributing |
21:43 |
Shara |
I simply don't want someone else making money from the server I run and pay for. |
21:43 |
Shara |
I don't run it for that. |
21:45 |
sofar |
hmmm |
21:47 |
IhrFussel |
Minetest will NEVER have an official iOS app, so we will never get those users to use the right app |
21:47 |
Shara |
It's happening with android players as well, Fussel |
21:47 |
IhrFussel |
Yes but most of my mobile players use iPhone or iPad |
21:48 |
Shara |
I just walked an Android player through how to get the official app, and after a bit he said the controls were so bad he'd prefer to switch back and pay |
21:48 |
Shara |
It's not the first time this has happened. |
21:48 |
Shara |
Always the same reason - the controls are bad/difficult |
21:48 |
IhrFussel |
Actually it's just the movement that's stupid in the app...it uses arrows instead of a joystick like most other apps do |
21:50 |
IhrFussel |
It's extremely difficult to walk left/right cause the arrow buttons are so close by |
21:50 |
Shara |
Is that the only problem? |
21:50 |
|
davisonio joined #minetest-hub |
21:51 |
IhrFussel |
Pretty much...all other buttons are necessary (jump, sneak) ... plus most 3rd party apps don't have the debug menu or noclip/fast |
21:52 |
IhrFussel |
Maybe you could also improve the way you open the chat/inventory/drop stuff |
21:52 |
Shara |
I am assuming these are on screen, touch-screen type "buttons"? |
21:52 |
IhrFussel |
Yes virtual touch butttons...one sec |
21:52 |
Shara |
I wish I knew more about app development, because if it's just two buttons being too close together, it doesn't sound difficult to fix |
21:54 |
IhrFussel |
Shara, https://goo.gl/images/zuKfYf |
21:55 |
Shara |
Thanks Fussel |
21:55 |
Shara |
I don't even know if I have anything capable of running it to test on |
21:56 |
IhrFussel |
It's from github, I looked for the latest interface (0.4.16) |
21:56 |
Shara |
Question is what's bad about this, that isn't bad on apps? |
21:56 |
IhrFussel |
Older Android versions looked worse but the arrows were always the same |
21:57 |
Shara |
other apps* |
21:57 |
IhrFussel |
The problem is that you can not precisely press the direction buttons most of the time...other clone apps replaced the arrows by a virtual joystick that you can simply hold in the direction you want to go |
21:58 |
IhrFussel |
360° movement |
21:58 |
Shara |
And is there any reason, beyond no one feeling like working on it, that the official app can't have such a thing? |
21:59 |
IhrFussel |
I'm guessing no core dev who's actually interested in working on Android knows how to do that |
21:59 |
IhrFussel |
And I imagine it to be a lot more complicated compared to 4 simple buttons |
21:59 |
Shara |
It's kind of sad, given that it's how so many players are using the game |
22:00 |
IhrFussel |
Core devs could look at Multicraft's code which actually adds that joystick I think |
22:01 |
Shara |
From a player on my server: "I hope MineTest change joystick because when I want walk is hard" |
22:02 |

This is what Multicraft's UI looks like |
22:04 |
paramat |
i've asked in the forums, had someone sort of interested but they disappeared |
22:04 |
paramat |
if i was good with android code i'd add the joystick |
22:05 |
Shara |
I've only done some very basic android apps, nothing even close to this |
22:05 |
IhrFussel |
You could "copy" the Multicraft code or not? I mean not steal 1:1 just the basic idea of how to implement it |
22:05 |
Shara |
And I have no easy way to test if I try to do something |
22:05 |
paramat |
it seems MT core devs don't care about mobile devices, except sapier, maybe we can ask him |
22:07 |
Aerozoic |
still now mobile MT 4.16 either |
22:07 |
Aerozoic |
still no* |
22:07 |
Shara |
paramat: the problem is that the number of mobile players is getting pretty high |
22:07 |
paramat |
if i coded joystick i would have to cluelessly copy paste from an app, which is not a good way to develop, and maybe would break app licenses? not sure. maybe we could ask MoNTE48 for permission for code? |
22:08 |
sofar |
monte gave permission for us to use his code |
22:08 |
sofar |
someone just has to do it |
22:09 |
paramat |
yes exactly, mobile users affect servers a lot |
22:09 |
paramat |
ah |
22:10 |
Aerozoic |
Oh i installed from F-droid which only has 4.15. Looks like google has 4.16 |
22:11 |
Shara |
Looks like F-droid isn't kept up to date |
22:12 |
Shara |
But I send players to Google anyway |
22:12 |
Aerozoic |
Yea F-droid has to be manually installed. Not for kids. |
22:14 |
Shara |
More from the same player: "Arrows on joystick is very small to, and arrow to up is confused" |
22:14 |
Shara |
Seems to confirm what Fussel explained. |
22:14 |
Aerozoic |
So that circle in bottom left of multicraft makes you walk wherever you put your thumb? |
22:15 |
IhrFussel |
Aerozoic, yes, I'm currently looking for the src code that implements the virtual joystick |
22:16 |
paramat |
Shara maybe you could add an issue saying what you said here, asking for virtual joystick control, then we can tag sapier, and maybe we can copy across multicraft code? |
22:16 |
Aerozoic |
I came across multicraft's github a few weeks ago, idk how i found it |
22:17 |
Aerozoic |
Although i think you meant within the code specifically for the joystick, lol. yeah good luck! |
22:17 |
Shara |
paramat: Hmm, is there no issue about android control problems yet? |
22:18 |

22:25 |
paramat |
no |
22:26 |

I think the app is just called "Multicraft - Freeminer" |
22:27 |
paramat |
there are several 'multicrafts', we mean the main one https://github.com/MultiCraftProject/MultiCraft |
22:27 |
Aerozoic |
Yeah the name is what made me think that. |
22:28 |
Shara |
Thanks, paramat |
22:31 |

The app is this one or not? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.MultiCraft |

paramat |
oh hehe it does say freeminer |
22:32 |
paramat |
yes that one, links to the github page |
22:32 |
IhrFussel |
Well it says "Free Miner" |
22:32 |
paramat |
they really shouldn't use 'freeminer', however freeminer is now shut down |
22:33 |
paramat |
i guess they mean 'free miner' |
22:33 |
IhrFussel |
I think they mean "a miner app that's free" |

you can't, license conflict |

22:56 |

ok, someone said we were allowed to use ther code, let's see what monte says |
22:56 |
IhrFussel |
I honestly don't see where the virtual joystick is defined |
22:56 |
paramat |
*their |
22:57 |
IhrFussel |
Could it be in Java? |
22:57 |
sfan5 |
no it's not in java |
22:57 |
sfan5 |
paramat: since he himself changed to license to lgplv3 (with the nice side effect of no code reuse possible) i doubt it |
22:58 |
paramat |
meh |
22:58 |
sfan5 |
honestly you just need someone to fix the controls to suck less, it's not that complicated |
22:58 |
IhrFussel |
But he could tell us how to do it without using his exact code |
22:59 |
IhrFussel |
The joystick is the biggest problem |
22:59 |
sfan5 |
>how to do it |
22:59 |
sfan5 |
joysticks aren't rocket science |
22:59 |
sfan5 |
a competent dev can implement this in their sleep |
22:59 |
paramat |
anyway, i feel bad for server owners due to the unofficial forks, this seems to be a critical problem with open source multiplayer games |
22:59 |
paramat |
not easy for me though, i wouldn't have a clue how to |
23:00 |
paramat |
ok sfan can you do it in bed tonight? :] |

yeah i don't blame you sfan |

IhrFussel |

23:09 |
paramat |
oh besides, i couldn't test, so i can't work on it |
23:10 |
shivajiva |
I can't tell if sfan5 is saying he's not competent enough to do it, or trying to berate paramat's efforts, when he can't be bothered himself. Funny how this stuff comes across to the onlooker :) |
23:11 |
sfan5 |
neither |
23:11 |
rubenwardy |
at least the engine code is useful by pc users too |
23:11 |
rubenwardy |
i dont want to work on something that would solely be ripped by all the forks |
23:11 |
rubenwardy |
and monetised |
23:13 |
Shara |
Problem is servers are basically being monetised because the official is so bad that Android players don't want to use it |
23:13 |
shivajiva |
ergo parts of minetest development is controlled by the forks ability to monetise the work |
23:16 |
shivajiva |
shame really |
23:19 |
paramat |
well, most players will use the fork apps anyway even if the official one is good, just because there are so many of them, and many mobile players are clueless to quality or 'officiality' or don't care |
23:19 |
paramat |
however the official one should be improved of course |
23:19 |
paramat |
it should be the best really |
23:19 |
Shara |
Most (who are not really young) will switch when confronted about it, which is what happens on my server when they complain about ads |
23:20 |
paramat |
the forks tend to be more sloppy |
23:20 |
paramat |
good to hear |
23:20 |
paramat |
i'll PM lordironspatula again in the forum, or whoever it was .. |
23:25 |
paramat |
oops, it was 'lordfingle' |
23:32 |
paramat |
PM sent |
23:51 |
rubenwardy |
however, 0.5 might negate this |
23:51 |
rubenwardy |
as most Android clients likely won't update |
23:53 |
paramat |
i hope they won't but expect they will :] |
23:53 |
paramat |
however multicraft is not adding 0.5 changes so |
23:53 |
rubenwardy |
I am tempted to make my own ethical clone |
23:53 |
paramat |
if so, why not work on the official one? |
23:55 |
paramat |
i guess, more freedom to make it different |
23:58 |
paramat |
hm and multicraft has had > 1000,000 downloads (!) so since they're not updating to 0.5 that will be significant |
