celeron55 Shara, reading logs for this channel, perhaps we need a 'minetest-offtopic' channel? there is so much offtopic casual chat happening in this channel, about 50%, it is irritating to filter through this when reading logs to keep up to date with MT stuff, it is a habit carried over from -project |
00:36 |
paramat |
or maybe 'chit chat goes to minetest'? |
00:37 |
benrob0329 |
Id say chit chat could go to an offtopic chat |
00:37 |
benrob0329 |
minetest is generally newbies asking for help |
00:37 |
Shara |
paramat: I don't want to say no off topic at all, because part of people being able to work togethe ris being free to talk to each other, but given how busy it's getting here, you may have a point |
00:37 |
paramat |
yes a little is ok |
00:38 |
Shara |
The log today was kind of huge |
00:38 |
paramat |
as in dev |
00:39 |
benrob0329 |
Tbh Im not even going to try and read the log at this point |
00:39 |
Shara |
I skim, instead of fully reading, but I'm only guaranteed to see something if my name is used |
00:40 |
Shara |
To be honest, I don't think any of us expected this channel to pick up activity so quickly |
00:40 |
paramat |
i had to scan through a huge amount of offtopic chat to pick out MT stuff, i'm too busy to waste time like that :] |
00:40 |
VanessaE |
let's not make it too strict though |
00:41 |
VanessaE |
otherwise it becomes too much like -dev |
00:41 |
Shara |
VanessaE: same thought. Got to hit a balance |
00:41 |
Shara |
I guess let's see what c55 has to say about an offtopic channel |
00:42 |
VanessaE |
just as long as azekill and ABJ don't find their way in here, I think we'll be fine :) |
00:42 |
Shara |
Considering -hub is meant to be a place where it's easy for contributors to speak to devs, if devs are having trouble picking out stuff they should probably look at, it does need thinking about |
00:42 |
VanessaE |
true enough. |
00:44 |
paramat |
dev is not very strict, which is nice and makes it more relaxed, and ontopic is much wider here being anything MT-related |
00:45 |
Shara |
I doubt c55 is awake now, but let's see what he says. |
00:45 |
paramat |
since 'chit chat goes to minetest' another channel is possibly not needed |
00:45 |
VanessaE |
that's fair |
00:46 |
VanessaE |
#minetest has always had a pretty big ratio of offtopic chatter |
00:46 |
Shara |
It always seemed mostly dead when I was in there |
00:46 |
VanessaE |
it's pretty variable. |
00:48 |
paramat |
here a think a minimum of offtopic is ok, to make it more relaxed |
00:48 |
Shara |
Well, I will be sad if I can't occasionally moan over the lack of doughnuts. :P |
00:49 |
Shara |
But if you have to wade through pages of non-MT things to find a tiny bit of MT stuff, then it's not working quite right |
00:49 |
paramat |
i agree, joking is ok i think, because it's minimal |
00:50 |
Shara |
I guess the difference is one off comments vs. big conversations |
00:50 |
paramat |
i like to joke in -dev and would never consider that unacceptable |
00:52 |
VanessaE |
wait wait |
00:52 |
VanessaE |
we're out of donuts?! |
00:52 |
Shara |
See the problem!! :( |
00:53 |
VanessaE |
paramat: besides, if joking were disallowed, I'd never be able to say much in -dev ;) |
00:53 |
VanessaE |
(that's about all I can do anymore, everything else goes over my head) |
00:56 |
paramat |
i love the humourous stuff in this channel, that's fine and i would never want people to even remotely feel restricted on that, a channel would become dull and no fun |
00:57 |
paramat |
long conversations about smartphones, monitor resolutions ugh .. |
00:57 |
VanessaE |
yeah. |
00:58 |
Shara |
I just kind of drift off when people start talking about that stuff |
00:58 |
Shara |
Sort of thought I was the only one though :P |
00:58 |
Shara |
Pretty much everyone seems to care more about phones than I do |
01:01 |
Shara |
anyway, before you get spammed by my head hitting the keyboard here, good night :) |
01:01 |
VanessaE |

tenplus1 |
hi celeron |

hides |
08:14 |
celeron55 |
the problem doesn't seem to be offtopic itself, but the inability to filter it out when reading the channel |
08:15 |
celeron55 |
i don't know if there are any ways to practically do that other than not talking offtopic |
08:16 |
paramat |
see earlier discussion about offtopic http://irc.minetest.net/minetest-hub/2017-04-08#i_4862027 |
08:16 |
celeron55 |
i mean, we could require people to prefix their messages with "offtopic: " if they talk offtopic; i wonder how that'd go |
08:16 |
celeron55 |
seems quite unwieldy |
08:17 |
tenplus1 |
too many channels become annoying... I prefer connecting and focusing on one channel |
08:17 |
Krock |
I agree with tenplus1 in this point |
08:17 |
paramat |
i think excessive offtopic here is a problem, but only 'excessive' |

^^ |
08:18 |
tenplus1 |
we do talk offtopic at times, but it makes the channel interesting and brings in more people knowing you can let your hair down at times |
08:18 |
VanessaE |
celeron55: I think the simplest answer is to move offtopic to #minetest |
08:18 |
paramat |
yeah we already have minetest for long offtopic conversations, no need for another channel |
08:18 |
VanessaE |
everyone in here is in there already |
08:18 |
VanessaE |
(well most of us are) |
08:19 |
celeron55 |
personally i'm fine with offtopic stuff being here |
08:19 |
paramat |
offtopic gets near 50% in here sometimes, too much |
08:19 |
celeron55 |
but then again i don't read everything anyway even if it isn't offtopic |
08:20 |
tenplus1 |
ehe |
08:20 |
paramat |
but, to be clear, as explained earlier, i encourage humour and some offtopic, for a more relaxed and fun channel :] |
08:21 |
tenplus1 |
VanessaE: I'm adding Hemp to Farming Redo, any particular crafts/recipe's you'd like to see added |
08:21 |
tenplus1 |
hi paramat |
08:21 |
VanessaE |
tenplus1: rope and oil are about the only in-game materials I can think of that hemp could be used for |
08:21 |
VanessaE |
(in the real world you can also make concrete out of it, or textiles) |
08:22 |
tenplus1 |
yeah, many good uses, but will leave that to mods :D |
08:22 |
celeron55 |
one thing that might work would be to moderate the log after-the-fact, adding a way to hide long offtopic parts after someone has scanned through it and marked them |
08:22 |
celeron55 |
but i don't think it's worth the effort |
08:22 |
tenplus1 |
oil yes, will add rope... |
08:22 |
VanessaE |
tenplus1: suggest you check for some other mods like castles or moreblocks. aliases instead of node defs, where possible |
08:22 |
VanessaE |
etc |
08:23 |
paramat |
indeed that's not worth the effort |
08:24 |
celeron55 |
so if there's a long offtopic discussion, just assume nobody read whatever ontopic you had to say at that time and say it later :P |
08:26 |
celeron55 |
it's like a peer-to-peer protocol in a non-switched network |
08:26 |
VanessaE |
10base2 :) |
08:28 |
tenplus1 |
VanessaE: so many other mods make there own rope, rope boxes etc. and castle has functions set for that so I wouldnt wanna override anything existing |
08:28 |
VanessaE |
tenplus1: good :) |
08:29 |
tenplus1 |
I did look into the canola thing but hemp seemed more useable and provides oil you were wanting to add |
08:30 |
VanessaE |
right, but do bear in mind that homedecor and pipeworks derive it from leaves |
08:30 |
VanessaE |
(craft 6 + empty vessels bottle -> bottle of oil, I think) |
08:30 |
VanessaE |
oil is one of those sort of "base" materials that ought be added to mt_game |
08:30 |
tenplus1 |
I was going to add a 3x glass + 4x hemp seeds = bottle of hemp oil |
08:31 |
VanessaE |
use a vessels bottle rather than glass |
08:31 |
tenplus1 |
but there's time to figure recipe's still... just finished drawing textures in gimp |
08:31 |
tenplus1 |
yeah |
08:38 |
tenplus1 |
VanessaE: 6x leafs or 6x seeds for oil ??? |
08:38 |
VanessaE |
I would say 8 seeds + bottle |
08:38 |
tenplus1 |
yeah, sounds about right :D |
08:38 |
VanessaE |
simply because the seeds represent much less mass than leaves |
08:38 |
tenplus1 |
so 8 seeds and 6 leaves |
08:39 |
tenplus1 |
thanks :D |
08:40 |
VanessaE |
yw |
08:43 |
tenplus1 |
hrm, can bottles of oil fuel a furnace you think ? |
08:45 |
VanessaE |
I don't know, good idea though |
08:46 |
VanessaE |
but then one could make the argument that you may as well just burn the leaves/seeds |
08:46 |
VanessaE |
(plus a furnace won't return the empty bottle) |
08:46 |
tenplus1 |
yes it will, we do that with lava buckets and have it return bucket :) |
08:46 |
VanessaE |
oh? |
08:46 |
VanessaE |
well what do I know then :) |
08:46 |
tenplus1 |
minetest.register_craft({ |
08:46 |
tenplus1 |
type = "fuel", |
08:46 |
tenplus1 |
recipe = "farming:bottle_ethanol", |
08:46 |
tenplus1 |
burntime = 240, |
08:46 |
tenplus1 |
replacements = {{ "farming:bottle_ethanol", "vessels:glass_bottle"}} |
08:46 |
tenplus1 |
}) |
08:47 |
VanessaE |
I didn't realize a furnace obeyed that directive. |
08:47 |
tenplus1 |
I do this with ethanol |
08:51 |
tenplus1 |
tree burntime is typically 30 seconds, so maybe hemp oil could be 20 |
08:56 |
TommyTreasure |
mod question: can a section of a mod be turned off with an override? |
08:57 |
VanessaE |
depends |
08:57 |
VanessaE |
if it's inside a global function, sure |
08:57 |
VanessaE |
by re-defining the function |
08:57 |
VanessaE |
same is true if you use some global variable to decide whether to execute some code |
08:58 |
VanessaE |
if it IS a global function, I mean |
08:58 |
TommyTreasure |
its not likely this particular mod has much future, but there are parts that i like, and other parts that have conflicting craft recipes, and duplicate name of other mods. (tech_tweak) |
08:58 |
TommyTreasure |
remember, i'm a super beginner at lua |
08:58 |
VanessaE |
everyone's a beginner at first :) |
08:59 |
TommyTreasure |
at my age, i'll be a beginner for a long time! lol |
08:59 |
VanessaE |
heh |
09:00 |
TommyTreasure |
for instance, the tech_tweak uses the same recipe as etheral for stone ladder. no need to have both, and i kind of like the etheral version better |
09:01 |
tenplus1 |
w00t, hemp addition final :) |
09:02 |
tenplus1 |
am thinking 3x hemp leaf = 1x paper ? |
09:02 |
TommyTreasure |
<< can't spell ethereal today. twice in one sentence! sorry |
09:04 |
VanessaE |
tenplus1: sounds about right |
09:05 |
VanessaE |
I keep thinking something else is needed to go with that |
09:05 |
tenplus1 |
leaves are small, maybe 6 horizontal = paper... and 6x vertical = string |
09:06 |
VanessaE |
maybe extract the leaves into bulk pulp first? |
09:06 |
VanessaE |
then one becomes paper, 2 for string maybe? |
09:06 |
tenplus1 |
so bucket of water surrounded by leaves ? = 8x hemp pulp |
09:06 |
VanessaE |
that could work |
09:07 |
VanessaE |
I've always been a fan of more complex crafting paths |
09:07 |
tenplus1 |
ehehe... and 2 rows of leaves and 1 row of string = 6x hemp rope |
09:07 |
VanessaE |
none of this simple foo -> complex bar with nothing in the middle :) |
09:07 |
VanessaE |
that could work but I don't know how hemp rope is made |
09:09 |
tenplus1 |
hemp fibres are pulped and woven into string and rope |
09:10 |
tenplus1 |
we can make it versatile but not that easy :D |
09:12 |
tenplus1 |
will call it hemp fibres tho, not pulp |

red-001: the reason I personally dislike the notion of dual-boot is that with a VM, you have your primary/host OS that does 90% or whatever of what you need, then you can fire up the VM with guest to cover that last 10 percent without interfering with whatever else you were doing |
23:14 |
VanessaE |
with dual-boot you're forced to reboot and kill your productivity |
