hi, about how much bandwidth is needed to run a server, let's say with just a single user; I'm trying to figure out why my server is having serious lag issues (ie 10 seconds+ latency when loading chunks) |
03:03 |
katp32 |
it seems I'm getting only about 2-3mbps to the server so I'm guessing that's it, just thought I'd ask to confirm |

katp32: do also check disk latency |
03:53 |
katp32 |
wasn't sure how to check it; using linux |
03:54 |
katp32 |
I doubt it though, because I did monitor disk usage, and it seems to drop off only shortly after a player joins, whereas it takes minutes for all the chunks to appear for the client |

That's interesting, he even copied the minetest forum verbatim at some point (with links back to minetest.net), and apparently likes making accusations about people of producing a certain very illegal kind of pornography. |

Hello everyone, for a minetest server, what should the active_object_range be set to with 5.2-dev ? I see some saying 3 and some saying 4.. Others 7! Default says 3 however currently the server is set to 2. |
19:13 |
Krock |
defaults. |
19:13 |
sfan5 |
well that depends |
19:13 |
sfan5 |
what would you like to achieve by changing it? |
19:16 |
erstazi |
sfan5 and Krock thanks for responding. Currently we are noticing a drastic change since 0.4.17-1 and 5.x with how ABMs are handling. We are noticing flickering on/off with technic machines/lamps and also how cacti grow |
19:16 |
sfan5 |
while players are nearby? |
19:16 |
erstazi |
sfan5: yes, with technic for sure. |
19:17 |
sfan5 |
how near? if more than 48 nodes that behaviour is expected |
19:17 |
erstazi |
for cactus, it used to be completely grown when a player would return to an area. Now it requires a player to be nearby to grow (might be a different issue) |
19:17 |
erstazi |
sfan5: I would say within the 16x16x16 |
19:17 |
sfan5 |
in any case running with active_object_range = 6 is totally fine if your hardware can handle it |
19:18 |
sfan5 |
hm, that sounds like an actual issue |
19:18 |
erstazi |
sfan5: with more data, we can submit an issue on bug tracker |
19:18 |
DS-minetest |
the flickering technic machines sound more like a too high power demand |
19:19 |
erstazi |
DS-minetest: even with low load, it does flicker on the server |

DusXMT: Wouldn't that be defamation per se? Of course, I'm assuming American law. |
21:58 |
rubenwardy |
US doesn't offer many protections against this kinda thing, galaxie, |
22:00 |
galaxie |
Too broad then? I've read most of the site some time ago and didn't see any such accusations. |
22:01 |
galaxie |
Where I'm from (maybe state law varies), accusing someone of a crime/felony is defamation per se, which means you don't need to prove damages, which is the most likely cause for a defamation suit to go nowhere. |
22:02 |
galaxie |
But yeah, still hard to win. I was just curious. |
