Minetest is an educational game |
00:46 |
rubenwardy |
it's a button on the second to last tab in the main menu |

Teaches you languages |
00:46 |
anon46853 |
hmm |
00:47 |
rubenwardy |
it's because your computer language is Japanese :) |
00:47 |
paramat |
in minetest.conf add 'language = en' |
00:47 |
anon46853 |
um where do I find the minetest.conf file |
00:47 |

~/.minetest/minetest.conf |
00:47 |
rubenwardy |
I think |
00:48 |

it's a text file in your minetest directory |
00:48 |
anon46853 |

00:49 |
anon46853 |
there is no .conf file |
00:49 |
anon46853 |

00:50 |
paramat |
there will be one somewhere |
00:50 |
anon46853 |
I couldn't find it |
00:50 |
anon46853 |
just did a system wide search |
00:50 |
paramat |
no, it's created automatically, don't add one |
00:51 |

i wonder if it's only created once you play in a world ... can't remember |

anon46853 |
sad irc is dying |

anon46853 |

01:22 |
ChimneySwift |
well considering they're both devs an this is the official chat channel for minetest I think you're all good :p |
01:23 |
paramat |
MT IRC is fairly active |
01:24 |
paramat |
and almost all the devs won't go anywhere else |
01:24 |
paramat |
discord's for the kiddies ;) |
01:24 |
paramat |
the quality of discussion is higher here too |
01:28 |
rubenwardy |
how do you know that without spying in discord? |
01:29 |
ANAND |
o_O |
01:29 |
octacian |
I was just gonna ask that |
01:29 |
ChimneySwift |
dun dun dah |
01:29 |
octacian |
Unless you're there, you don't know :P |
01:29 |
ANAND |
Could've been a general opinion too, though |
01:29 |
ChimneySwift |
lol |
01:30 |
octacian |
There tends to be more lower quality discussion there, but just because its more active. Even more of it tends to be of near equal quality to that of IRC. |
01:30 |
octacian |
At least it's usually more active. not today though lol |
01:31 |
ANAND |
For kiddies or not, 'tis where the players are. If someone is deeply involved with a server, joining that server's Discord (if one even exists) is kinda mandatory. :) |
01:32 |
ChimneySwift |
it's about equivalent to joining their forum :P |
01:33 |
paramat |
heh no i'm not there, but i'm probably right about the quality |
01:34 |
paramat |
and yes, just because there are more people there, and generally younger and less experienced |
01:34 |
ANAND |
Being partial towards IRC, I hate to say this, but Discord has been the place for a lot of deep on-topic discussions too. :P |
01:35 |
ChimneySwift |
IRC tends to be much more consistent quality, but theres still a lot of good quality conversion. Modding, development, general help, and quality off topic too |
01:36 |
ChimneySwift |
it's good MT has a presence on a platform with a larger young audience, it gets new people involved and curious, and somewhere we're they can ask for help from more experienced people |
01:38 |
paramat |
yeah, essentially i'm wary of the signal to noise ratio, even though there is apparently some signal there |
01:38 |
ChimneySwift |
additionally, it gives a more approachable way to access the core audience of the game which can help development |
01:38 |
ChimneySwift |
yeah, there's more noise than here for sure, but it's not all bad :) |
01:39 |
ChimneySwift |
ofc, whether or not you like discord is a whole other conversation :P |
01:41 |
paramat |
yes, good points |

heh, all this talk of IRC vs Discord... I actually find IRC a lot easier to use, of the two. Especially when you want quick in-browser access; Discord's site is bloated and slow, while webchat.freenode.net is quick and simple. |

well IDRK but it sure seems as though all the APIs required are there. some things just haven't been ported yet |
20:51 |
rubenwardy |
basically just as bad :) |
20:51 |
Fixer_ |
rubenwardy: it is not that i5, but firefox is slow as fuck |
20:52 |
Fixer_ |
rubenwardy: quantum or chrome are fast as ferrari on that pc |
20:53 |
Fixer_ |
i have tooons of bookmarks and 67 tabs opened, prequantum just can't process that |
20:54 |
GreenDimond |
67 tabs.. pah |
20:54 |
GreenDimond |
I know someone who has about.. 200? |
20:54 |
Fixer_ |
GreenDimond: and only few of them are actually loaded |
20:54 |
GreenDimond |
They use waterfox |
20:55 |
Fixer_ |
GreenDimond: they are not loaded tabs, cold start is like 5-10 on i5+ssd |
20:56 |
Fixer_ |
i'm using firefox since literally first version, and its UI always felt _laggy_ |
20:56 |
Fixer_ |
when some tab loads in background - you feel the heat everywhere |
20:56 |
Fixer_ |
Peak Lag was FF44 or near it |
20:56 |
Fixer_ |
then they did some optimisations |
20:57 |
Fixer_ |
but Quantum is speedlight ahead, it is not subjective, it is insta-start with mostly similar addons and bookmarks |
20:57 |
Fixer_ |
and everything loads noticeably faster, no more dial up feal |

Chromium still feels faster in my experience, especially on JavaScript-heavy websites |
20:59 |
Calinou |
this is even more true on mobile, where I use Bromite now (privacy-enhanced fork of Chromium with built-in ad blocking) |
20:59 |
Calinou |
it doesn't block everything as it's not a proper ad-blocking add-on like uBlock Origin though :( |
20:59 |
Fixer_ |
Firefox is like using a donkey |
20:59 |
Calinou |
so I still see social share buttons and stuff like that on mobile |
20:59 |
Fixer_ |
then you sit in your chromium ferrari and HOLY SHIT |

21:02 |
Calinou |
oh, it has a new logo now :) |
21:03 |
Calinou |
it also has a DuckDuckGo search option, which I can't live without now |
21:03 |
Calinou |
(Chrome/Chromium doesn't ship with it, and you can't add it on Android) |
21:07 |

firefox runs perfectly fine for me |
21:08 |

rubenwardy: quantum, but prequantum one is not perfectly all |
21:09 |

I don't use old versions |

Calinou and Fixer_: I use DuckDuckGo as well, and haven't tried Bromite, but for Android the Lightning web browser is another great option. Fast, open-source, and supports ddg perfectly. |
22:39 |
Pilcrow182 |
^ no ad blocking in that, though, as far as I know. So Bromite may still be better depending on your use-case |
22:40 |

ad blocking is necessary feature |

I have an azerty keyboard, and for some reason minetest does not recognize one of my keys. |
22:53 |
xrogaan |
Outputs this in the console: `Could not find EKEY_CODE, using orig. X11 keycode instead: 11' |
22:53 |
xrogaan |
(when I press the é key) |
22:55 |
xrogaan |
Why is it that game engines try to define every single key in existence, and always fails to do just that because it's insane. |

Hi |
23:30 |
rubenwardy |
xrogaan: we don't handle that, Irrlicht does |
23:38 |
xrogaan |
so the error message is an irrlicht one? |
23:39 |
xrogaan |
urgh, they still use svn. |
23:43 |
xrogaan |
rubenwardy: in any case, it's not handled properly by the game. There is no feedback, no error message. |
23:44 |
xrogaan |
Irrlicht seems to default to the X11 keyevent though. |

as long as the KeyCode is known, it can be mapped on xmodmap to retrieve a "human" name. |
