Several players have a protocol version of 0 on my server...how old again does a client need to be to have 0? |
10:26 |
sfan5 |
IhrFussel: 0 is not a valid protocol version |
10:27 |
sfan5 |
not sure but I'd say it just mean the client version is unknown (even though that doesn't make sense) |
10:30 |
IhrFussel |
sfan5, the protocol version seems to be empty then... I applied red-001's code which is "local version = 0 local player_info = minetest.get_player_information(joinn) if player_info then version = player_info.protocol_version end" |
10:31 |
IhrFussel |
Not empty...nil/NULL whatever |
10:31 |
sfan5 |
no in that case it means the player information did not exist |
10:34 |
IhrFussel |
VERY WEIRD...players RANDOMLY seem to return a non-existent version...the same player sometimes has 27 or 0 |
10:37 |
sfan5 |
sounds like a race-condition to me |
10:38 |
IhrFussel |
There can't be any race conditions since I only call the function ONCE on_joinplayer() |
10:39 |
sfan5 |
no |
10:39 |
sfan5 |
the race-condition here is that another threads fills in the player information and it might or might not be available already in on_joinplayer |
10:40 |
IhrFussel |
So you suggest minetest.after? |
10:40 |
sfan5 |
you could try that |
10:41 |
IhrFussel |
Should 0.1 be enough? |
10:42 |

dunno, try it |

The protocol version got bumped 2 times in ~ 1 week? o.o |
11:13 |
Lord_Buckethead |
apprently |
11:13 |
Lord_Buckethead |
I guess we went from hating protocol bumps to doing them for the fun of it |
11:16 |
IhrFussel |
Well...I understand the bump if it's really essential for the new feature (like sound pitch) |
11:16 |
Lord_Buckethead |
it wasn't |
11:17 |
Lord_Buckethead |
it's ok to break recent dev versions |
11:19 |
IhrFussel |
Lord_Buckethead, umm...so the protocol version is just an internal way to mark "waypoints" in dev now? |
11:19 |
Lord_Buckethead |
it's a way to avoid breaking stuff |
11:20 |
Lord_Buckethead |
like breaking stable versions |
11:20 |
IhrFussel |
Yes but if you introduce a new feature you HAVE TO bump the prot version or else older clients might not handle it...or not? |
11:21 |
Lord_Buckethead |
well its ussually seen as ok to break recent dev builds as people that are using dev builds likely have the means to update |
11:22 |
IhrFussel |
Well unless the feature is just server side (which the pitch is AFAIK) |
11:22 |
sfan5 |
protocol bumps don't break anything |
11:22 |
Lord_Buckethead |
no it's client and server side |
11:22 |
Lord_Buckethead |
the server sends a new vaule to the client |
11:23 |
Lord_Buckethead |
and iirc the client will crash to main menu if that value isn't there and it tries to read it |
11:23 |
sfan5 |
that's not how it works |
11:23 |
IhrFussel |
Oh so the client calculates the pitch and plays the sound? I thought the server calculates everything and sends the media to the client (but that wouldn't work in runtime so it makes sense) |
11:24 |
|
DI3HARD139 joined #minetest |
11:26 |
sfan5 |
Lord_Buckethead: the client and server will agree on a version they both support, the client will only try to read values it knows that are present (for that version) and the server will only write values for the same conditions |
11:26 |
Lord_Buckethead |
I know |
11:27 |
Lord_Buckethead |
I was pointing out what would happen if the client tried to read the value but the server didn't send it |
11:27 |
Lord_Buckethead |
e.g. if there wasn't a protocol bump |
11:28 |
sfan5 |
true, however that situation (should) never happens |
11:29 |
Lord_Buckethead |
so what are the rules for protocol bumps and dev clients? |
11:29 |
Lord_Buckethead |
is it that it's ok to break something as long as the break isn't a crash? |
11:29 |
sfan5 |
unless someone makes a mistake, nothing will break |
11:32 |
Lord_Buckethead |
huh so I guess the guidelines changed then |
11:33 |
sfan5 |
what? |
11:33 |

11:41 |
DI3HARD139 |
They tend to have trouble communicating. Seems to depend on what commit the client and/or server was built from |
11:42 |
IhrFussel |
That would be bad if the clients the devs supposedly still support don't work properly |

So, I've been able to disable tool wear/breaking. But I haven't figured out how to disable wear/breaking for tools being used as weapons to fight enemies. When a tool is used to attack, it still wears & breaks because that mode is not affected by 'uses=0'. |
21:54 |
AntumDeluge |
Does anyone know how I can disable it? |
21:55 |
AntumDeluge |
I wouldn't think it would be 'damage_groups', because that sounds like it's related to how much damage the weapon deals. But, I will try it. |

It looks like my answers lies in the 'HitParams' structure: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/blob/683ab3a154a40f13dd1bcd54ba111f7b21e98483/src/tool.h#L102 |

AntumDeluge, usually the mods decide if wear occurs |
22:40 |
Jordach |
(aka mobs, etc) |
22:41 |
AntumDeluge |
But the amount of wear should be defined in the mod where the tool is defined. |
22:42 |
AlexYst |
I agree. The tool knows how strong it is, the thing hit with it doesn't. |
22:45 |
AntumDeluge |
I tried adding 'hitparams' & 'hit_params' to the register_tool definition. But that does nothing. |

Out`Of`Control |
can i update mod without restarting server? |
22:46 |
Out`Of`Control |
on the fly |
22:46 |
AntumDeluge |
e.g.: 'hitparams.hp = 0', 'hitparams.wear = 0', 'hit_params.hp = 0', etc. |
22:46 |
Jordach |
Out`Of`Control, changing anything in MT needs a restart, period |
22:47 |
AntumDeluge |
Out`Of`Control, I mods are loaded into memory at launch, I believe. |

You only need to restart the world though, not the entire application. Just exit to the menu and go back in. |
23:04 |
AntumDeluge |
AlexYst, that's if you are playing singleplayer. If you are running a server, you need to restart the entire server. |

AntumDeluge: Oh ... right ... I've been unable to host a server for a while due to a lack of an Internet connection, so I've totally forgotten about everything but single-player. My bad. |
23:12 |

For a server, yeah, shutting down the world means shutting down all of Minetest. |

Documentation on 'register_tool' is pretty scanty: http://dev.minetest.net/minetest.register_tool :-\ |

ThomasMonroe |
does anyone here know how to use the minetestmapper on a server? |
23:38 |
rubenwardy |
ThomasMonroe, you'll need to stop the server, run the mapper, then resume |
23:38 |
rubenwardy |
it's traditional to do this during the back up window |
23:39 |
rubenwardy |
the C++ version only takes 10s of seconds for a big portion of a world, better than backing up |
23:39 |
rubenwardy |
iirc |
23:40 |
ThomasMonroe |
i meant for me as a client, running the mapper on a server |
23:40 |
ThomasMonroe |
ik of a person who does that |
23:41 |
rubenwardy |
hmmm |
23:41 |
rubenwardy |
not sure what you mean |
23:41 |
ThomasMonroe |
he told me to use the GUI |
23:41 |
rubenwardy |
so the client is mapping the world? |
23:41 |
ThomasMonroe |
yes |
23:41 |
rubenwardy |
do you mean the minimap? |
23:41 |
ThomasMonroe |
no |
23:41 |
ThomasMonroe |
he created a picture of the world from his client |
23:41 |
rubenwardy |
well, the only way I'd suggest is to use local world downloading |
23:42 |
ThomasMonroe |
https://filebin.net/lavtg3lk3rq1zt32/2017-06-14_01.20.23_server_mt.rrhgameservers.ml_48265.png |
23:42 |
ThomasMonroe |
how would that work? |
23:42 |
rubenwardy |
download the map locally, run mapper on that |
23:42 |
rubenwardy |
you enable a config, connect to the server, then it saves to a world called SERVER_SERVERIP_PORT |
23:42 |
rubenwardy |
or smth |
23:43 |
ThomasMonroe |
which config? |
23:43 |
rubenwardy |
we need a !setting command to fuzzy match config options |
23:43 |
rubenwardy |
ThomasMonroe, search for "local" or "save", I gtg |
23:44 |
ThomasMonroe |
found it |
23:44 |
ThomasMonroe |
its under client/network/enable_saving_of map downloaded from server |

I have a feeling that tool/weapon wear from battle cannot be disabled from Lua side. It seems that wear is determined by the engine according to how much damage is dealt to an entity. |
