micheal65536 |
hi i'm rewriting a mod that adds mobs to the game and there's something i don't understand about ABMs |
15:33 |
micheal65536 |
the mobs are spawned using ABMs |
15:34 |
|
Wuzzy joined #minetest |
15:34 |
Tre |
hi Wuzzy |
15:34 |
micheal65536 |
currently the mod contains a line 'stop_abm_flood()' with comment 'prevent abm-"feature"' |
15:34 |
Krock |
and ABMs are called from the core with the specified interval/chance |
15:35 |
micheal65536 |
what this function seems to do is wait 0.5 seconds before allowing mobs to spawn again |
15:35 |
micheal65536 |
however the abm intervals are all in the range of tens of seconds to a few minutes (the time between spawning rounds) |
15:35 |
micheal65536 |
what could the purpose of this line be? |
15:36 |
sfan5 |
interval doesn't mean that the abms couldn't happen all at once |
15:36 |
Krock |
the abm is executed on each node |
15:36 |
micheal65536 |
i also don't get how the abm catch-up thing works, and i'm wondering if this line has something to do with that (because catch-up isn't disable even though it hink it should be) |
15:36 |
Krock |
thus, they sum up depending on how many nodes with the specified type there are |
15:36 |
micheal65536 |
i realise the abm executes on all the nodes at the same time |
15:37 |
micheal65536 |
that's why there's the 'chance' parameter, which the mod currently sets to around 10000 |
15:37 |
micheal65536 |
so my understanding is that the chance parameter will stop the abm from spawning a mob on every single node |
15:38 |
micheal65536 |
my understanding is that with a chance of 10000, only 2.604166667 mobs will be spawned in each 64-by-64 area in each abm tick (where the frequency of the ticks is dictated by the interval parameter) |
15:38 |
micheal65536 |
so what is this abm "flood" that is being referred to? does it have something to do with catch-up? |
15:38 |
rubenwardy |
catch means that an abm will be ran more often than `interval` when the block is loaded |
15:38 |
micheal65536 |
why would that be wanted? |
15:39 |
rubenwardy |
grass growing |
15:39 |
Krock |
smelting ores in the furnace |
15:39 |
micheal65536 |
is there any other situation where abms may run more often than the interval setting |
15:39 |
micheal65536 |
Krock: my ores don't smelt when the block is unloaded |
15:39 |
micheal65536 |
Krock: also i think smelting doesn't use abm |
15:39 |
Krock |
depends on the mod. default furnace uses node timers AFAIK |
15:40 |
Krock |
if it was made with ABMs, the catch-up will try to make it look like it smelted while the block was unloaded |
15:41 |
Krock |
like described in the lua api file |
15:41 |
micheal65536 |
so basically catch-up tries to say "if abm was supposed to run every minute, and the block's been unloaded for five minutes, then call the abm five times when the block is loaded again"? |
15:41 |
micheal65536 |
and setting abm_definition_table.catch_up to true is enough to disable this? |
15:42 |
micheal65536 |
what about the comment "thus if chance is 1 and interval is 1, disabling this does nothing if omitted, it is set to true" on the wiki? |
15:44 |
Krock |
no, set it to "false" to disable it |
15:45 |
micheal65536 |
what about the "thus if chance is 1 and interval is 1" part? |
15:45 |
Krock |
from interpreting that sentence, it will reduce the interval and chance to 1 when doing the catch-up function, thus it won't take an effect on ABMs that start with these params |
15:46 |
micheal65536 |
oh, i see, that could be it |
15:47 |
micheal65536 |
so to summarise, ABMs will be called after every "interval" seconds with a probability of "chance" |
15:47 |
micheal65536 |
and never called any other times if "catch_up" is set to false |
15:48 |
micheal65536 |
meaning that setting catch_up to false is sufficient to disable the "abm flood" referred to in the comment in the code that i'm rewriting, and there should be no need to implement a timeout oneself between successive abm calls? |
15:49 |
|
Allonphone joined #minetest |
15:50 |
Krock |
not sure |
15:50 |
Krock |
but disabling catch-up definitely reduces some flood |
15:55 |
calculon |
not sure, but i suspect abms are not called multiple times to catch-up, but only with greater chances |
15:55 |
calculon |
that would explain why it has no effect if chance=1 |

PureTryOut[m]: no but it can be made controllable from a mod at least. |
21:02 |
VanessaE |
the minimap has to be in-engine to perform well enough, but managing it from Lua is viable. |
21:03 |
PureTryOut[m] |
really? why wouldn't it perform well from Lua? |
21:03 |
PureTryOut[m] |
even with LuaJIT? |
21:03 |
VanessaE |
because Lua is an interpreted scripting language |
21:03 |
VanessaE |
and even LuaJIT can't match the speed of pure C++ |
21:05 |
PureTryOut[m] |
sure but isn't it enough for a minimap? |
21:05 |
VanessaE |
no |
21:05 |
VanessaE |
Lua <-> C++ also incurs an unavoidable performance penalty |
21:05 |
PureTryOut[m] |
and some kind of C++ plugins would be nice to have then, if performance does actually limit the stuff you can do |
21:05 |
VanessaE |
so all of those get_node() or vmanip calls, if they were to exist, would still be very slow |
21:06 |
VanessaE |
C++ plugins will likely never happen |
21:06 |
PureTryOut[m] |
why not? |
21:07 |
|
Fritigern joined #minetest |
21:07 |

because that would require some kind of just-in-time compiler for the client |

21:08 |
PureTryOut[m] |
well true... |
21:08 |
PureTryOut[m] |
I don't know but it seems limiting if you can't make a minimap entirely in Lua |
21:08 |
VanessaE |
it's not that you couldn't. |
21:08 |
PureTryOut[m] |
a minimap is just an example, there is probably more stuff that can't be done otherwise |
21:08 |
VanessaE |
it would just be slow |
21:08 |
VanessaE |
besides, why do you need this? |
21:09 |
PureTryOut[m] |
I don't need it, but I like the mods to be able to control everything, and something like a minimap is a big part of that |
21:09 |
VanessaE |
you can turn the minimap off in a mod, or that'll be the plan anyway |
21:10 |
VanessaE |
or change its shape, probably change whether radar mode or overview mode are available. |
21:10 |
VanessaE |
I wouldn't be surprised if you could also restrict the zoom level |
21:12 |
PureTryOut[m] |
again, the minimap is just an example. I'm just dissapointed by the slowness of Lua |
21:13 |
VanessaE |
it can't be helped really |
21:13 |
|
Wuzzy joined #minetest |

I guess |
21:16 |
VanessaE |
the only viable solution would be for minetest to bundle luajit with it (always compiled for gc64), and to improve in every way possible, the performance of Lua <-> C++ switches. |
21:17 |
juhdanad |
I don't think Lua is slow. |
21:17 |
juhdanad |
At least, many mods work well now. |
21:18 |
benrob0329 |
Its slow compared to a compiled language yes |
21:18 |

hm *pokes ShadowBot* |

[04-22 14:53] <VanessaE> ~tell juhdanad I planned on handling itemstack colorization in unified dyes. a regular dig action ought to return the node as you see it in the world, shift-dig ought to return the neutral-colored node + dye. not yet implemented. |
21:18 |
benrob0329 |
But when it comes to scripting languages, Lua/JIT is about as fast as they get |
21:19 |
VanessaE |
Lua today is really about the same as BASIC was back in the old days - we had BASIC compilers, and they made such programs quite fast compared to the interpreter, but they were still nowhere near as fast as custom-coded assembly or even compiled C. |
