Hi everyone :) is there a mod which gives the possibility to give to each new player on server an particular item (I think to a book filled with an introduction text) |
09:29 |
Alcyone2 |
? |
09:30 |
kaeza |
you mean give_initial_stuff? |
09:31 |
kaeza |
not sure if you can give written books though |
09:32 |
Alcyone2 |
yes something like that, adding to the initial stuff a book explaining few things |

That interesting because it brings a lot of information on mods |

Alcyone2 |
that's* |
09:37 |
Alcyone2 |
And I'm also thinking to this |
09:38 |
Alcyone2 |
but first I want a king of book with text (or command, why not) you can have everywhere with few special information |
09:38 |
Alcyone2 |
I'm currently setting up a server for leisure and educational purpose in my local hackerspace |
09:40 |
Alcyone2 |
I will use the 31000 nodes in every direction to set several layer (cave_realms, nether, other worlds, etc...) and for example I want to give few information about at whih layer players need to dig to find them |
09:40 |
Alcyone2 |
That's just an example |
09:40 |
Alcyone2 |
It's not exactle the same purpose than the rules written at spawn point |
09:41 |
Alcyone2 |
It's just few information about all the things added to the game !) |
09:41 |
Alcyone2 |
:) |
09:41 |
Alcyone2 |
but not really to a particular mod, for that I'm interested in documentation system mod |
09:41 |

I think the book will work just fine in that case |

CSM will require clients to utilize for RAM for Minetest right? |
13:12 |
IhrFussel |
more RAM* |
13:18 |
Fixer |
IhrFussel: i think yes |
13:19 |
Fixer |
IhrFussel: depends on mods itself, how heavy they will be |
13:21 |
IhrFussel |
Fixer, do you think there will be mods that run purely client-side? Like...the server does practically nothing? |
13:27 |
IhrFussel |
Cause I tested a few mods earlier that are considered "heavy" and 1 mod can increase RAM usage by 20-30 MB ... if I imagine a server with 10 of such heavy mods or 20 less heavy ones mobile users with 512 MB are already screwed |
13:30 |
IhrFussel |
My server requires ~ 600 MB RAM in total without CSM which is even pretty high on a 1 GB RAM phone/tablet (cheap devices barely have more than 1 GB anyway) |
13:32 |
IhrFussel |
It's a shame that only a fraction of mods seem to care about mobile users even though they are a large part of the total user base |

Hello! Is the Minetest development finished? Wiki says it is in alpha stage, is that? |
14:19 |
juhdanad |
Definitely not. Minetest is actively developed. |
14:19 |
IhrFussel |
luizsab, the version number should tell you that it is not finished "0.X.XX" |
14:20 |
luizsab |
and is it the alpha stage? |
14:20 |
IhrFussel |
But it should run stable enough to pretty much guarantee a decent experience (in singleplayer and multiplayer) |
14:21 |
IhrFussel |
Errors caused by mods are external errors IMO and shouldn't count as development |
14:22 |
luizsab |
Yes, it is awesome to me. I need just information/confirmation, I'm helping with the wiki translation |
14:22 |
IhrFussel |
Oh then yes it's in Alpha |
14:23 |
IhrFussel |
AFAIK |
14:23 |
IhrFussel |
At least nobody here ever mentioned it being Beta |
14:23 |
sfan5 |
i associate alpha with half-broken software |
14:23 |
luizsab |
And this information does not seem current |
14:23 |
sfan5 |
minetest runs pretty much perfectly since a few years |
14:24 |
sfan5 |
it's just not finished |
14:24 |
IhrFussel |
sfan5, Beta means it's in a testing stage before full release...that's how most other games define "Beta" |
14:24 |
sfan5 |
yeah however this doesn't really work here |
14:24 |
sfan5 |
there is no "full release" planned |
14:25 |
IhrFussel |
Well then go ahead and update the wording xP |
14:26 |

14:27 |

i can see 0.4 being very long term |
14:27 |

we could change to 4.15.0 |
14:28 |
juhdanad |
Yes! There is smooth lighting, it is a big change. |
14:28 |
IhrFussel |
How was it different? |
14:28 |
paramat |
0.3 had no Lua modding |
14:28 |
sfan5 |
clearly 0.5 needs to have some big innovation |
14:28 |
sfan5 |
how about we port it to java? |
14:28 |

IhrFussel, does your server have "disable_escape_sequences" set to true? |

Did you see my message about the compile date? Is it supposed to work with a server build compiled Jan 3? |
20:32 |
red-001 |
it should |
20:34 |

red-001, did you try on a 0.4.15 stable server yet? |

not yet |

wait so whats the protocol version of your server? |

What's the proper way to get the position of an entity? getpos() (as in "self:getpos()") just crashes with an "attempt to call a nil value" error. |
20:38 |
red-001 |
try get_pos |
20:38 |
cheapie |
That makes it crash sooner (before it even gets there) with the same error. |
20:39 |
cheapie |
Huh, and now that's giving the same behavior as getpos()... which is still a crash, either way. |
20:40 |
cheapie |
If it helps, this is in an "on_step" function in an entity definition. |
20:40 |
agaran |
cheapie: from where you get 'self' then? |
20:40 |
cheapie |
It's passed as a parameter to the on_step function, according to the docs. |
20:41 |
IhrFussel |
red-001, how to see the protocol version? |
20:41 |
cheapie |
I basically have "on_step = function(self)", containing the line "local pos = self:getpos()", which is where it's crashing. |
20:42 |
cheapie |
I also tried moving a different line that uses "self" above that line, and it crashes on that one (get_properties()) as well. |
20:45 |
|
rubenwardy joined #minetest |

OK, further reading and experimentation seems to indicate that I need to use "self.object" instead. That could /probably/ be made a bit more clear. |
20:46 |
red-001 |
IhrFussel, could you check if your server was compiled just before the commit that removed chat prediction got merged? |
20:47 |
IhrFussel |
red-001, it is the commit from Jan 3...the prediction got removed after that |
20:47 |
IhrFussel |
WAIT |
20:49 |
IhrFussel |
That explains it...my register_on_chat_message() works like this: message arrives, check if moderator or admin, then send to each player EXCEPT for the sender cause the prediction was still enabled at that time |
20:50 |
IhrFussel |
That means any client that connects with a disabled version will not see their own messages |
20:50 |
red-001 |
yeah removing chat prediction was kinda a mess |
20:51 |
IhrFussel |
So that means I'll have to send the message to the sender too now...and if the client is an older version they will see the message twice |
20:52 |
red-001 |
could you just return false in the message handler if they are not a mod? |
20:52 |
red-001 |
that way only mods and admins will be forced to update |
20:53 |
IhrFussel |
No, it loops through all players to append [H], [MOD], [Admin] to the message |
20:53 |
|
Exagone313 joined #minetest |

red-001 |
are there a lot of helpers/mods? |
20:54 |
IhrFussel |
You can check with /moderators and /helpers if you are still on |
20:55 |
IhrFussel |
Or I can count them for you |
20:56 |
IhrFussel |
14 moderators and 7 helpers...but the loop is to display the rank to all others |
20:57 |
IhrFussel |
So I can either ignore the new clients for now and they will not see their own messages...or I send the older clients the same message they see on their client again |
20:58 |
red-001 |
well if you don't need to change their message you can let minetest handle it |
20:58 |
red-001 |
so just return false if it's a normal user |
20:59 |
IhrFussel |
I'll post part of my register chat message code one sec |

cheapie: actually moving player who is seated across column of nodes? |
21:33 |

The stone there is the elevator car (I don't have any actual textures or anything for it yet). It turns into an entity, which moves up/down with the player attached, and then turns back into a node again. |
21:33 |
cheapie |
The "with the player attached" part is the hard part so far. |
21:34 |

I have the position sorted out so far, now I just need to stop them from falling through when it stops. |

move player -bit- more above so when entity->node happens player can't have enough time to fall thru? |
