08:03 Bro666 sfan5: Hi, how are you doing? I am using your teaching mod. I think the concept is great, that it can make arithmetic and spelling really exciting for kids. But I have a question.

08:16 Bro666 Hi. I am writing about using Minetest as an educational tool, but I have a problem with the teaching mod. I set up a user with the teach privileges as the mod explains, and, in creative mode, lay out the puzzles, including the checker node.
08:16 Bro666 What I want to do next is leave the answer blocks laying around so students can find them, take them to the puzzle and place them.
08:16 Bro666 So I do that, but when I log in as a "student" user, I can't pick the solution nodes up.
08:16 Bro666 I think: "Fair enough, if I could pick up these blocks, I would be able to demolish or manipulate the puzzles the teacher has set up."
08:17 Bro666 So I log in as a third player in creative mode and drop the solution nodes round about the puzzle
08:17 Bro666 When I log in as a student user, I still can't break and pick up these blocks.
08:17 Bro666 What am I missing?

08:44 Fritigern Bro666: You may be better off asking in the forum. Specifically in the topic about this mod.
08:46 sfan5 Fritigern: there's not topic about that mod
09:03 Bro666 Yes, I realised. I have posted the question
09:04 Bro666 https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14363
09:05 sfan5 uh yes
09:06 Bro666 I couldn't find a topic for the mod, so I posted it in General discussion
09:06 sfan5 Bro666: students can only destroy nodes that are above solution nodes
09:06 Bro666 sfan5: So where do they get the blocks to answer the questions from then?
09:06 sfan5 creative inventory
09:06 Bro666 Do they have to be in Creative mode?
09:06 Bro666 Ah
09:07 Bro666 Exactly
09:07 sfan5 Bro666: like this https://kitsunemimi.pw/tmp/ph_GCppPdO5C.mp4
09:09 Bro666 Right. I was looking for a way to scatter the blocks around, the students would have to go looking for them and come back to the puzzle to reclaim their prize, which would be rare items or minerals.
09:09 sfan5 how about a node like the checking thing
09:09 Bro666 If they are in creative mode, there's not much point, since they already have access to most things.
09:09 sfan5 but just one that allows student to break nodes that are above?
09:10 Bro666 Ah!
09:10 Bro666 I see.
09:10 sfan5 ok, i'll add that
09:10 Bro666 Yes. Nice workaround
09:11 Bro666 So I lay down a dummy checker node, put the block on top of it and the students can then pick it up, right?
09:11 Bro666 That sounds like an excellente solution
09:11 Bro666 One more question...
09:11 sfan5 yes
09:12 Bro666 It seems that that students can place and destroy an answer node time and time again on a checker node
09:12 Bro666 So they could, intheory
09:12 Bro666 reclaim the prize an infinite number of times
09:12 Bro666 Is there any way of avoiding that?
09:13 sfan5 ah
09:13 sfan5 so you want to lock puzzles when they're solved?
09:13 Bro666 Yes
09:15 technics joined #minetest
09:16 Bro666 If you give them a prize of a diamond, they could in theory, amass an infinite amount of diamonds just by deatroying and solving a puzzle time and time again. It is not a big issue, but in my scenario it would be better if they couldn't do that.
09:17 sfan5 ohhhhh
09:18 sfan5 Bro666: players can break all nodes
09:18 sfan5 *except* the lab nodes
09:18 sfan5 unless it's a node with a letter/digit above a checker
09:18 Bro666 Aha.
09:19 Bro666 So i put the puzzle above chekcers, and students can mess with it. Good solution! Do I can download that now?
09:20 sfan5 wait

12:01 sfan5 Milan: you should post a more complete log file, that one error message is not very helpful
12:01 Milan sfan5, but there arent any as i know
12:02 Milan and its really randomly so i cant say, hey guys, its maintenance for xminutes to reproduce with trace or something
12:02 Milan :(
12:02 Milan i also doesnt find errors from ssdb
12:03 Milan the docs from ssdb tell "DO remember to configure your Linux kernel parameters about max open files, refer to [1] and [2]. Or you will see error messages like Too many open files in log.txt, or Connection reset by peer on client side. "
12:04 asl97 it's probably just some users force closing the client while in the middle of connecting
12:05 Milan but its currently very often and very annouying for the players :'(
12:05 Milan -u
12:05 asl97 it appear in the chat message?
12:06 Milan it is the server log message, the client just recive a rtt -1 and a very late timeout if any
12:07 Milan sometimes the players are still shown as online in /status
12:07 Milan cat /var/log/ssdb/log.txt |grep files does not give any result
12:08 Milan this is the complete line:
12:08 Milan 2016-04-03 11:44:11: ERROR[Server]: Server::ProcessData(): Canceling: No player for peer_id=227 disconnecting peer!
12:09 asl97 then there is really no real problem, the player just disconnected for some reason like network problem or force closing
12:11 Milan i recive it sometimes too, my computer/network was not busy
12:11 Milan i just play and somewhen if noone ansers i checkout rtt an "oh, im disconnected...again"
12:11 Milan *answers
12:14 Milan yesterday there was two new players, so we was ~7players and after a few minutes *bam* 6x peer disconnect
12:15 asl97 all at the same time? the network issue might be on your server side then
12:15 Arron how to invrae minetest quality ?
12:16 Milan asl97, yes, but we had this trouble at first with ovh and moved to php-friends with the server. it is again, so i dont think its a network issue...

12:49 sfan5 yes that works too
12:55 Milan asl97, maybe its happens from time to time, but i recogniced that its really often if players playing around with mesecons/pipeworks/mini_sun <- where are much objects handled
13:27 asl97 Milan: afaik, object are heavy and noisy, the sudden network load cause by them could cause a disconnection
13:29 STHGOM joined #minetest
13:31 Milan asl97, but i am using a kvm, not just some small little bad server on my home or something!
13:32 Milan and the network load is not heavy
13:33 asl97 on some server I been on, entering an area with lots of active object can cause a spike from just ~4kb to 250++kb
13:33 asl97 sometimes the server can't handle the spike, sometimes it's the players

15:38 milan_ Krock, which database youre using?

15:38 Krock sqlite3
15:38 milan_ then its a minetest problem. good to know
15:38 milan_ but sad because that means i cant fix it by optimize properties
15:39 Krock I think it's rather a problem that there are some lag spikes
15:39 Krock that take some hundreds of miliseconds
15:39 Krock thus, the ABM gets less "calculation power" and causes that warning

17:32 DoyleChris question about github
17:33 sfan5 just ask
17:33 DoyleChris technic had 5 files updated, how do i get just those files
17:33 DoyleChris im on the page thta shows the file changes
17:33 sfan5 how did you download technic
17:34 sfan5 if you used the .zip file you can't, you need to download the while archive again
17:34 sfan5 if you used git from the command line you can just run "git pull"
17:34 DoyleChris ok and just replace the files that where updated
17:35 DoyleChris i made some modifications to technic on my computer and didnt want to overwrite them.
17:35 est31 yes git pull only downloads the updated things
17:35 est31 if you did modifications, its more complicated than git pull, but still very easy
17:35 est31 you can use git stash for example
17:35 Milan est31, there was no errors before it, the full line is: 2016-04-03 11:44:11: ERROR[Server]: Server::ProcessData(): Canceling: No player for peer_id=227 disconnecting peer!
17:36 Milan aqnd sometimes it happens very very often for many players at the same time
17:36 sfan5 yeah no Milan
17:36 sfan5 what does the log before say?
17:36 sfan5 no matter what
17:36 Milan diggin and placing...
17:36 sfan5 there will be messages before that
17:36 sfan5 hm
17:36 Milan i am serious, there is nothing, just this
17:37 sfan5 since you're using a custom database backend i suggest you to check the error handling code
17:38 DoyleChris "git stash" is that on the website
17:39 est31 DoyleChris, you best head to #git channel then you can explain them what you want to do
17:39 Milan sfan5, it doesnt tell there are too many files for example thats what confusing me, and the ulimit is telling about the correct preferiences, now im not sure how to figure it out :/
17:39 est31 they have the best resources
17:40 sfan5 no i dont mean that
17:40 sfan5 Milan: ssdb is not a database backend integrated into minetest
17:40 sfan5 or is ssdb using the redis protocol?
17:40 est31 yes it seems to
17:40 DoyleChris how do i get there
17:41 Milan sfan5, ssdb stores as leveldb and speek redis
17:41 est31 DoyleChris, /join #git
17:41 Milan so mientest is configures for redis...funny thing: its much faste then with redis
17:41 est31 type that into chat
17:41 sfan5 huh
17:42 sfan5 someone should take a look at the redis backend then
17:42 Milan sorry for typos...

17:43 Milan but not every time
17:44 Krock est31, I think most clients also support joining channels by clicking the hashtag
17:46 Milan by the way...for regular the objects problem is just because something like pipeworks but the chunk where its happen is "clean"

20:32 VanessaE snap a screenie, circle the building, and shoot me the coords. X is across the top of the image
20:34 Milan still cleaning objects...
20:34 Milan maybe a bunch of objects
20:35 VanessaE give it time
20:35 VanessaE /clearobjects can take hours.
20:35 Milan the database doesnt give errors and is very active....
20:36 Milan okey...lets wait...^^

20:53 turd Hi VAnessa
20:53 VanessaE hi.
20:54 turd m running a server with 1 GB ram and it's at 65% mem. Is that normal? not many mods
20:54 alket joined #minetest
20:55 Dragonop turd, a mod could be really resource consuming, so, how many mods is not important.
20:55 turd its ubuntu server. I use "top" command to ciew memory and its from minetestserver
20:57 LazyJ joined #minetest
20:58 turd well while im here id also like to know what i need to backup to save and transfer the world and player details to a new server
20:58 turd i installed by compiling the dev version
20:59 Milan ...a progress bar for cleaning objects would be a nice to have :D
20:59 turd and i have 2 directories /minetest and .minetest

21:03 cimbakahn HELP!
21:04 turd help how?
21:04 VanessaE qwrwed: https://daconcepts.com/vanessa/hobbies/minetest/qwrwed.we
21:04 VanessaE took a while to find the area.
21:04 cimbakahn I found out why i couldn't connect to Nigel's server. It was because i didn't have 0.4.13-dev. I had 0.4.13 only.
21:04 qwrwed Sorry, was just about to post coords
21:05 cimbakahn So i got rid of the previous version and installed 0.4.13-dev.
21:05 VanessaE qwrwed: I saved the whole region, down to around 5 or so meters below ground
21:06 VanessaE plus a bit to the east and south to capture some trees
21:06 qwrwed May need a bit deeper than that
21:06 qwrwed I'll check though
21:06 cimbakahn I was telling everyone before that everytime i installed 0.4.13-dev i had problems. And now i am having problems again.
21:06 VanessaE more like 10 nodes below actually
21:07 VanessaE looks like enough to capture the main cavern under the region
21:07 VanessaE missed some caves though
21:07 VanessaE nothing in them but torches, though
21:08 VanessaE aw shit
21:08 VanessaE there's stuff under the heliport too
21:08 cimbakahn Here is the problems i am having ----> http://pastebin.com/7aBWvqN7
21:08 * VanessaE goes lower
21:10 cimbakahn Also my cache folder is missing under /home/user .......
21:10 * VanessaE waits for the revised area to save..
21:13 turd cimbakahn when i installed dev( probably the wrong way) i got 2 directories. "minetest, and hidden .minetest" maybe your cache is in either or. Mines usually in the hidden one
21:13 cimbakahn Also "u_skins" has been uninstalled a long time ago.
21:14 turd try edit minetest/worlds/world/worldname.mt and unmark u_skins

21:28 cimbakahn I took the cache folder from the previous version of minetest i had installed and copyed it and put it into the .minetest folder, since i was missing it.
21:29 cimbakahn Is the media folder under /home/user/.minetest/cache/media supposed to have 13528 items in it?
21:30 cimbakahn It just sounds like alot.
21:31 Dragonop media is downloaded from servers
21:32 cimbakahn Can i delete everything in the media folder?
21:33 VanessaE cimbakahn: if you want
21:33 VanessaE your client will just re-download as needed
21:34 cimbakahn Thank you VanessaE!
21:41 qwrwed VanessaE, still saving?
21:42 VanessaE yep.
21:42 VanessaE worldedit is abysmally slow.

22:15 sofar yes
22:15 sofar do you have an old copy of mesecons?
22:16 sofar the door thing was fixed a while back in mesecons
22:16 cimbakahn I have minetest-mod-mesecons
22:17 sofar update it. I think you have an old copy
22:18 Milan LOL ERROR[Server]: ServerEnv: Trying to store id=1908 statically but block (-21,-1,20) already contains 49 objects. Forcing delete.
22:18 Milan aber a so long clearobjects
22:19 Milan *after
22:19 cimbakahn ok.
22:20 cimbakahn Is this the one ----> http://mesecons.net/
22:21 cimbakahn Or is this the one ----> https://github.com/Jeija/minetest-mod-mesecons
22:22 VanessaE both of those are the same, cimbakahn
22:22 VanessaE the latter is the actual software repo
22:22 VanessaE the former is the project's home page/website.
22:23 cimbakahn ok. Thank you!
22:24 VanessaE Milan: something's creating new objects - increase your per-mapblock limit. max_objects_per_block = xxx in your minetest.conf
22:24 VanessaE consider that a temporary solution until you find out what's creating too many objects.
22:25 VanessaE (I use a value of 500 on two of my servers)
22:26 VanessaE qwrwed: I gave up on that first saving try. did a git pull and re-build in Release mode (was RelWithDebInfo) and now trying again.
22:27 qwrwed Alright
22:31 Milan VanessaE, i did...a restart was just missing, will see if its change

22:38 cimbakahn What does this mean by rolling release ----> [Modpack] Plantlife [rolling release] [plantlife_modpack]
22:39 Milan well...somehow my server seems slow now :(
22:41 VanessaE cimbakahn: it means the author (me in this case) doesn't do version numbers.
22:42 VanessaE instead the "release" is just whatever you happen to download (or clone) on any given day.
22:43 cimbakahn I need plantlife & moretrees. Which page do i get them from? https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4394&sid=e51bc376de044283992ed6899a7aecfa#p62987

22:44 VanessaE that second link is correct
22:44 VanessaE https://github.com/minetest-mods/plantlife_modpack
22:44 VanessaE and...
22:44 VanessaE https://github.com/minetest-mods/biome_lib
22:45 VanessaE you need this last one to use the other two. it's the library that does all the hard work.
22:45 cimbakahn ok.
22:56 Milan is there a valid reasom why my server is slow after /clearobjects?

23:32 cimbakahn Ok. Where are the pages for bobblocks, carts, & instabuild ?
23:32 Niebieski Yeah I guess. I don't know their names, I wasn't there when they existed. xD
23:32 cimbakahn Sorry if i am being a pest. This is just extremely frustrating to me.

23:37 VanessaE can't be done.
23:37 cimbakahn I found this but i don't know which one to click on ----> https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?id=1274
23:38 VanessaE for something like a C64 or C128 you need a full-on PC, and a decent one at that
23:38 VanessaE (because of the analog nature of the sound and video chips)
23:39 cimbakahn instabuild is a way to throw up an entire building with one click.
23:39 VanessaE cimbakahn: https://github.com/minetest-mods/BobBlocks
23:39 VanessaE this is the minetest-mods-team's fork of bobblocks, since RabbiBob isn't really maintaining it anymore
23:40 Niebieski It must be hard to collect original parts then.
23:45 cimbakahn I wonder if this "https://github.com/minetest-mods/BobBlocks" has the same stuff in it as the previous one......
23:51 VanessaE qwrwed: I can't save the area out.
23:52 qwrwed Damn
23:52 qwrwed Would it be possible only to get the area under the heliport?
23:52 VanessaE let me try saving JUST the heliport and its underground part.

23:56 VanessaE at least that's the coords on the old map
23:57 VanessaE those two files should be enough to cover your area
23:57 VanessaE but the unknown nodes that made up your wind turbines and angled walls on that large tower probably won't come back in
23:57 Fixer VanessaE, need quick help, is this correct as mod? http://pastebin.com/raw/0JLTNgXG i need to execute first line
23:58 qwrwed That's fine, as long as everything is in there somehow or other
23:58 VanessaE Fixer: I think so.
23:58 VanessaE Fixer: assuming os.execute works on your machine
23:58 Fixer it is not
23:58 Fixer crap
23:59 Fixer hmm, ping -n 4 127.0.0.1 should help
