msantana: I use mint 17 and the links on those pages go to vers 4.10 not 4.12 |
11:55 |
msantana |
whtemple1959: I understand, but do you really need the latest version? |
11:56 |
ElectronLibre |
Having the latest version is important. |
11:57 |
whtemple1959 |
msantana: I am exploring this game and one of the mods requires vers 4.12 as a new guy to Liux I am having trouble reconciling why there is a win vers 4.12 but not a Linux vers 4.12. seems to me the OS community would support Linux first and win tertiary |
11:57 |
ElectronLibre |
The devs themselves advise to upgrade quickly, especially because there will probably be a protocol break in the next release and servers needs to send special informations to masterserver (public servers) to avoid incompatibility with future clients. |
11:58 |
ElectronLibre |
If there is no way you can get 0.4.12 binaries for you distribution... you have to compile it by yourself. |
12:02 |
ElectronLibre |
Try this => http://dev.minetest.net/Compiling_Minetest#Compiling_on_GNU.2FLinux |
12:04 |
msantana |
ElectronLibre: Thanks for your information. I didn't know that was so important to use the latest version. |
12:04 |
whtemple1959 |
ElectronLibre: you will laugh and mumble many things but I have ratrely been successful at compliing anything so I try to stay away from that task. the question remains though why does the OpenSource community seem to be more interested in supporting windows rather than Linux? |
12:06 |
ElectronLibre |
I think it's maybe because they compile more often and simply on Linux, it doesn't bother them. But on Windows, compiling is like hell, so the binaries are given on minetest.net . |
12:07 |
msantana |
whtemple1959: The packaging maintenance is a task supported by distributions not by minetest or other application |
12:07 |
ElectronLibre |
But if you're bothered by compiling, there are scripts very well made to do this automatically. |
12:08 |
ElectronLibre |
^ Yes and there is also what msantana says. |
12:08 |
whtemple1959 |
ElectronLibre: to be honest this is only the beginning of my many questions. but you statement bring up the basic issue of Linux "coders" and their arogance at not considering those of use who cannot programm but desire a better option than windows |
12:09 |
whtemple1959 |

“pirating†|
17:33 |
VanessaE |
there's no excuse to pirate windows. |
17:33 |
Calinou |
Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.†In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.) |
17:33 |
Calinou |
If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy†to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying†(or “prohibited copying†for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.†|

How does Minetest's cache handle nodes from different versions of the same mod from different servers, i.e. one server has an old version of the mod where the node uses nodeboxes and another server uses the newer version that uses mesh nodes? Is a new file created in the cache for each or is the existing file over written each time when joining the other servers? |

ripdisk, download the engine and game from GitHub either as clones or as zip files. Then use the README's "sudo apt-get" line that includes all the dependencies. After that run the cmake with the server build option instead of the client. |

I use the zip files. After extracting, rename "minetest-master" and "minetest_game-master" to just "minetest" and "minetest_game". Then move "minetest_game" into the /minetest/games/ directory. |
21:39 |
LazyJ |
Then I go back to the /minetest directory and open a terminal there. |
21:40 |
LazyJ |
In the terminal I do the "sudo apt-get <stuff>" to make sure my dependencies are up-to-date. |
21:40 |
LazyJ |
Then I run this cmake for *client** build: |
21:40 |
LazyJ |
cmake . -DRUN_IN_PLACE=1 -DENABLE_FREETYPE=ON -DENABLE_CURL=ON -DBUILD_CLIENT=1 -DENABLE_GLES=1 -DENABLE_SOUND=ON -DENABLE_GETTEXT=1 -DENABLE_LEVELDB=1 |
21:41 |
LazyJ |
The "-DENABLE_LEVELDB=1" won't work if you don't have LevelDB installed. |
21:42 |
LazyJ |
"-DBUILD_SERVER=1" is what to use for a server setup instead of "-DBUILD_CLIENT=1". |
21:43 |
LazyJ |
The "-DRUN_IN_PLAC=1" will build Minetest in that directory and not spread it out in various places in your system. |
21:44 |
LazyJ |
No "/usr/share/some_parts_here", no "./hidden_folder_of_minetest",... everything stays together with RUN_IN_PLACE making it easier to keep an eye on Minetest things. |

whtemple1959: if you can't spell "new" and figure out the difference between a git repository and an apt repository, I'm not sure you are ready to run a server. |

whtemple1959 |
LazyJ: sorry chubby fingers...that is why I hate command line procedures... I ahve gone back to here https://packages.debian.org/sid/minetest-server and although it will take all night to insure all dependencies are met I will work through them all and then install the server |

whtemple1959: just follow the README, from this spot: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/blob/master/README.txt#L102 |
23:12 |
VanessaE |
it's just copy&paste. |
23:12 |
LazyJ |
There is also a "sticky" post or two on forum.minetest.net -> "Servers" forum that will contain more bits of info. |
23:12 |
VanessaE |
except that someone wasn't paying attention to line lengths in that doc, so make sure that line 106 is copied in full |

VanessaE: I just wanted to enjoy a common game with my son without him sitting in my lap and silly me thought that putting a mintest server on my file server so he and I could play together on cold winter days was a good idea. of cours as always Linux throws too many curves for this old dog to understand |
23:18 |
VanessaE |
you don't need to compile the server for that |
23:19 |
VanessaE |
you can use the client to launch a local server also |
23:19 |
est31 |
compiling the server is only neccessary if you need to execute it on a box that doesn't have Xorg dependencies installed |

Start Minetest as usual on your strongest computer, then click on the "Server" tab, select the world you wish to run (you might have to start one first in client mode if you don't have one already), fill in your player name and password in the appropriate fields (to the left), then click on the "Start Game" button. |

VanessaE: please do not laugh. I did try that from the start but our old broken down PCs just could not handle running a server and a client at the same time. I do hope that Santa will be able to bring us newer PCs for Yule.. if I were a character i the game you would see me banging my head aganst some blocks. |
23:24 |
VanessaE |
whtemple1959: then you did it wrong :) because that's exactly how Minetest already runs in "singleplayer" mode. |
23:25 |
VanessaE |
when you launch the client, go to the "server" tab and plug in a username and password for yourself to use as the admin, give a port number to run the server on. select a world to run, click "start game". |
23:25 |
LazyJ |
From that point start Minetest on another computer that is connected to your home network. On *that* computer go to the "Client" tab, enter a different playername and password then in the "Address" field enter "localhost" and the Port should be 30000 (default). |
23:25 |
VanessaE |
tell your kid to connect to your machine's LAN IP at that port |
23:25 |
VanessaE |
tell him to sign in with his own name and a password you two can remember. |
23:25 |
VanessaE |
done. |
23:27 |
whtemple1959 |
VanessaE: it does not surprise me...in the least. let me step away and re-attempt to make it work I will take notes and come back. Thank you VanessaE and LazyJ...to be continued. |
23:27 |
LazyJ |
Good luck ;) |
23:28 |
LazyJ |
Ah, crud. |
23:28 |
LazyJ |
Not "localhost" but the IP of the computer you want to connect to. |
23:29 |
LazyJ |
"localhost" is for testing two Minetests running on the same machine (useful for testing mods in a server setup). |
23:30 |
LazyJ |
whtemple1959, it will take several tries to get things figured out. Minetest is a bit convoluted. |
23:31 |
LazyJ |
and too sparce in the useful documentation department for most of us. |

I have compiled to different minetest 0.4.12 server on two different boxes, in both cases when users connect there is no TNT. |
23:41 |
iio7 |
I have tested with vanilla, is this a known issue? |
23:44 |
LazyJ |
iio7, try enabling TNT in your minetest.conf. From the /minetest/game/minetest_game/minetest.conf.example (different from the engine's "minetest.conf.example"): |
23:44 |
est31 |
TNT is disabled by default iio7 |
23:44 |
LazyJ |
# Whether the TNT mod should be enabled |
23:44 |
LazyJ |
#enable_tnt = <true in singleplayer, false in multiplayer> |
23:44 |
est31 |
so turn off minetest edit the file LazyJ mentioned and start minetest again |
23:45 |
iio7 |
Ah, of course, thank you very much! |
