Is the goal of minetest to become an opensource clone of minecraft or just to make something similar? |
02:11 |
Wuzzy |
gnatt: 2nd. |
02:11 |
Wuzzy |
Actually, Minetest is mainly an engine now. |
02:13 |
Wuzzy |
some people tried to make games for Minetest which are more similar to Minecraft, but so far, they are all still quite far away from Minecraft when it comes to actual gameplay. |
02:15 |
* Brains |
suspects that is because it becomes more fun to fiddle with various bits instead of chasing the clone. |
02:15 |
gnatt |
There is no red stone, right? |
02:16 |
Brains |
I think mesecons is supposed to be the redstone equivalent. |
02:16 |
Brains |
(Though not all the way there yet.) |
02:17 |
gnatt |
So is minetest trying to be very minimal and rely on mods like mesecons to add that, or would mesecons ever be bundled into minetest |
02:17 |
|
roboman2444 joined #minetest |
02:19 |
Brains |
I believe the view is that minetest should be an engine and that that kind of functionality would be in a mod. |
02:20 |
Brains |
I suppose technically minetest doesn't even come with a game if you grab it from git.. (Packaged builds usually include a couple of games as a concession to the newbiees.) |
02:20 |
Brains |
-e |
02:23 |
gnatt |
So what's the goal of minetest? To try to replace minecraft for the average consumer or just be something neat to tinker with? |
02:23 |
gnatt |
Hope that doesn't come off the wrong way, just heard about minetest today and curious |
02:25 |

compunerd joined #minetest |

would hazard to guess that the answer is both and more. With a flexible engine and a community of mods, there is no reason why ex-Minecrafters couldn't be happy right along side the tinkerers and the folks making new games. |

I'd say more of a tinker-thing. |
02:26 |
fireglow |
Gameplay wise, minetest isn't a replacement for minecraft, too many things are missing |
02:26 |
fireglow |
oder under-done |
02:26 |
Brains |
Minetest isn't even a game without, well, games / mods. |
02:27 |
gnatt |
Brians, yeah that was misleading. I think I get that now. minetest.net mentions minetest the engine and minetest the game, minetest_name |
02:28 |
Brains |
gnatt: Folks were getting confused by the fact that the engine wasn't enough to do anything with so a minimal game was bundled in... Just enough to get things running and maybe play around with. All the cool stuff is in the various games/mods. |
02:29 |
* Brains |
usually plays on a local server running the dreambuilder game. Carbone, technic, and a number of others are pretty popular too. |
02:29 |
* Brains |
may be somewhat distracted as he's bouncing a cranky server. |
02:30 |
gnatt |
Might be the wrong place for this, but the dropdown menus on minetest.net are almost impossible on win 8.1 chrome |
02:32 |
Brains |
Not sure who maintains that, actually. |

how so? |

program output should not be covered by license |

I mean, you can download gitorious, and install it on your server. thats free |

yes, and you have to give full source code to anyone who accesses it. |

partially incorrect |

and that automatically supports foss software development |
17:47 |

GitHub lets you make proprietary software as long as it is public |
17:47 |

you can just add no license |
17:47 |

est31: you can't have github on your own server |

which isn't exactly the same as normal github |
17:48 |
est31 |
thats true. why would I want if it already supports my open source project? |
17:48 |
ThatGraemeGuy |
because maybe you want to host something that shouldn't be public |
17:48 |

because GitHub may eventually 1) make changes you don't like, 2) go down, 3) go paid for everyone… |

I could rollback to before this commit: https://github.com/VanessaE/pipeworks/commit/6abed742e865b81b98f0122d86878d53d9283e81 |
18:12 |

I'll try now with ONLY pipeworks enabled |
18:13 |
est31 |
could you bisect pipeworks? that would be great |
18:14 |
fireglow |
okay, only mod on that server is pipeworks, and the problem is there |
18:14 |
fireglow |
this might be related to https://github.com/Sokomine/locks/issues/9 (server crash with shared locked chest and filters) |
18:15 |
est31 |
could be this : https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?p=169628#p169628 |

trying now myself... |

I don't know what to do. Only thing is to post an issue to pipeworks, since it interferes with default items |

I can reproduce it btw |

the forum recommendation is still not bad |
18:39 |
est31 |
try it https://github.com/est31/pipeworks.git |
18:39 |
est31 |
you can do sth like git remote add est31 https://github.com/est31/pipeworks.git |
18:39 |
est31 |
and then go git checkout est31/master |
18:39 |
est31 |
faster than newly cloning it |

hm yes, that still crashes. But that locked chests work again is superb |

tim_flatus, it prevents interacting from too far away, prevents moving too fast, prevents digging too fast or impossible nodes |
19:11 |
Calinou |
it does not prevent noclip and flying |

there is Lua API integration for every of these checks |

That is the way textures appear for mesh node models that 0.4.11 supports. |
19:48 |

Don't ever brew tea in a glass French press. The lack of oils caused the plungers mesh to snag and ruined it. |
20:03 |
tim_flatus |
There is a reason why the french call them cafetieres |
20:04 |
tim_flatus |
Tea should be made in a warm tea pot |
