all you need to do is start the server, announce, shut down |

How can i find out if my server announces the corrrect/correctly formatted info to the server list or not? I mean, is there a debug setting to make it visible, or a tool that i can install? |
20:42 |
sfan5 |
just check the server list |
20:42 |
sfan5 |
also there is no reason why it would not announce correctly formatted data |
20:42 |
sfan5 |
if the JSON is invalid the announce is ignored by the server list |
20:43 |
Fritigern |
So, changes are that the JSON is invalid then |

Fritigern |
*chances |
20:43 |

maybe |

from which IP do you announce? |

I'm pretty sure I know what went wrong |
20:58 |
sfan5 |
the problem is that the server list wants you to announce from the address you host the server |
20:58 |
sfan5 |
and 2601:8:a900:824:e0a9:dbb8:7186:c9ba is not the same as 67.170.30.149 |
20:58 |
sfan5 |
so you need to: |
20:58 |
sfan5 |
either |
20:58 |
sfan5 |
1) set bind_address to 67.170.30.149 |
20:58 |
sfan5 |
or |
20:59 |
sfan5 |
2) get a (sub)domain that resolves to both your v6 and v4 (aka. both the addr you use for the http request and the addr the server is hosted at) |

sfan5: if the ip (or domain) from http request is different than the server_adress the server isn't listed? |

Salbei_: if the IP of the HTTP request is not the server IP (or any of the A/AAAA records of the domain) the server isn't listed |
21:36 |
Salbei_ |
ok now I know why im not listed |
21:37 |
Salbei_ |
that is a problem for me |
21:38 |
Salbei_ |
why don't only check the server_adress? |
21:38 |
sfan5 |
thats what it does |
21:40 |
Salbei_ |
no u said it check if server_adress is different of http request ip |
21:40 |
Salbei_ |
it isn't listed |
21:41 |
sfan5 |
yes |
21:41 |
Fritigern |
sfan5: Did that perhaps change recently? |
21:41 |
sfan5 |
do you mean I should compare server_address with server_address |
21:41 |
sfan5 |
Fritigern: the IP check was re-enabled 19th sep |
21:43 |
Fritigern |
Then what changed recently? My server was stil listed two weeks ago, and now it doesn't. I didn;t change stuff, so something else should have changed that messes with things. |
21:44 |
sfan5 |
it's probably the IPv6 thing |
21:44 |
|

sfan5 |
whatever |
21:44 |
Salbei_ |
no i mean you shouldn't compare server_address parameter from server and server IP from http request |
21:44 |
sfan5 |
I'll temporarily disable the check again |
21:44 |
sfan5 |
Salbei_: but then everyone could pretend to be someone |
21:45 |
Fritigern |
I reverted to before Zeno's ip v6 commit, and that didn;t help. Going back further |
21:45 |
Salbei_ |
hum itsn't wrong |
21:46 |
Fritigern |
sfan5: Were imposters a big problem? |
21:46 |
sfan5 |
no |
21:46 |
sfan5 |
but there is no reason to design something insecure just because nobody takes advantage of it |
21:48 |
Salbei_ |
yes its right |
21:49 |
Salbei_ |
but an another solution don't exists? like an kind of ping to the server_adress by ur script |
21:49 |
Fritigern |
I went back to before Zeno's refactor, and i am listed again |
21:50 |
Fritigern |
I am now at 0.4.10-167-g9e811a9 |
21:50 |
Salbei_ |
im listed too now |

sfan5: the ipv6 thing still bothers me. Moreover, i tried a few sites which would report and/or convert my ip v6 and i am getting different results from each site. |

sfan5: What if you were to turn off v6 support on server.minetest.net? Would that not force all connections to be v4? In which case you would be able to reliablly use the checks again |

sfan5: I did a couple of tests, and IPv6 is very inconsistent, and can not be used to discover the IPv4 address as this short list shows: http://pastebin.com/bVV7EK6h |
