02:43 |

02:44 |

I'm curious how much extra effort the computer has to go through in very developed areas. |
02:44 |
VanessaE |
ah |
02:45 |
LazyJ |
A city block full of animated water, torches, lights, protection settings, locked storage, waving plants and leaves. |
02:45 |
VanessaE |
not all that much for the *server*, but the client will work pretty hard when it loads up a bunch of entities |
02:45 |
LazyJ |
As compared to a vanilla world's undeveloped areas. |
02:46 |
VanessaE |
the biggest CPU for clients would be particles (jin_xi is working on that), nodeboxes (RBA's got that) and entities (not sure who's working on those) |
02:47 |
VanessaE |
on the server it's mostly water/lava flow, and whenever you have a slow mod of course |
02:47 |
zat |
there should be a way to make efficient finite liquids |
02:48 |
Zeno` |
and light |
02:48 |
LazyJ |
I've seen error messages in chat about too many objects detected and MT was deleting them. Usually when flying into an ungenerated area. |
02:48 |
zat |
why not burrowing clients processing? |
02:48 |
VanessaE |
zat: it's been tried before and ...it was a failure :-/ |
02:48 |
zat |
VanessaE: burrowing? |
02:48 |
VanessaE |
zat: finite water, in general |
02:48 |
Zeno` |
actually, last time I profiled light was the biggest CPU user for a generic world with no buildings |
02:48 |
zat |
VanessaE: what can be so hard considering its so slow? |
02:48 |
VanessaE |
Zeno`: oh yes, light too. |
02:49 |
VanessaE |
zat: you'll have to talk to proller about it, and then try to piece together what *really* happened :P |
02:49 |
Zeno` |
oh wait.. you're talking about client. Light is on the server :/ |
02:49 |
LazyJ |
iirc, all the graphic stuff in MT is shouldered by the cpu. MT doesn't utilize the graphics card's abilities. |
02:49 |
zat |
proller: <3 |
02:50 |
zat |
LazyJ: could that be fault of irrlicht? |
02:50 |

As for flowing water and lava, players like fountains and waterfalls. |
02:50 |
VanessaE |
LazyJ: that's not entirely correct, but too much of it is, yes |
02:50 |
zat |
Minetest really needs Cryengine |
02:50 |
zat |
or unreal |
02:50 |
zat |
:D!!!!!! |
02:50 |
VanessaE |
zat: no, there's just too much stuff done in realtime that should be cached or set up ahead of time to be handled by the GPU |
02:50 |
Zeno` |
zat, no, the engine needs to use more GPU, simple as that :) |
02:50 |
Zeno` |
and what VanessaE said |
02:51 |
Zeno` |
The way Minetest is currently written using Cryengine would make no difference |
02:51 |
zat |
I think that finite water can be perfectly done with CPU serverside |
02:51 |
Zeno` |
It'd look exactly the same as well :D |
02:51 |

02:52 |

PNDyman joined #minetest |

The problem I had with finite water was it broke water elevators (and scenic waterfalls). Long, flowing water lends to the "fantasy" nature of Minetest. |
02:53 |
Zeno` |
Traversing an array in memory is not such a big deal if the data is able contiguous |
02:54 |
Zeno` |
But it's not, and as things currently are can not |
02:55 |
Zeno` |
Mainly because NodeId, param1, param2 are stored in the same object, so there are huge gaps between each node id (meaning cache misses) |
02:55 |
Zeno` |
and the inability to use fast functions like memcpy() etc |
