Time Nick Message
00:00 VanessaE so how large are the cubes now? :P
00:00 hmmmm pff I'd have to say like half the size
00:01 hmmmm if you change BS that won't do anything because everything else is scaled to the same constant
00:02 hmmmm to make cubes bigger in minetest you'd need to lower the player's head and make walking slower
00:02 hmmmm i feel that walking is too slow the way it is and running is too fast
00:02 hmmmm there needs to be a happy medium
00:03 kaeza walking is fine, but running is definitely too fast
00:03 hmmmm maybe have a run and a run meter and what not
00:03 hmmmm sprint rather like all other games
00:03 hmmmm one that can't be disabled via privileges
00:04 hmmmm this sort of crap is what a client-side lua is ideal for

02:08 hoodedice Hey kahrl!
02:09 hoodedice 0.5.0 or 0.4.10 next?
02:09 Peacock 0.4.9.0.1 :P
02:10 hoodedice XD
02:10 hoodedice Peacock: Rich piece of advice
02:10 hoodedice If you have anything less than USB 3.0, don't install ubuntu on it
02:10 hoodedice XD
02:10 Peacock the major feature of 0.5.0 will be "lagfree" :P
02:11 hoodedice Hahaha
02:12 hoodedice I do have a faster 4 GB USB drive... But I need 16 GB
02:13 hoodedice john_minetest!
02:13 Peacock i gots 16 and 32
02:13 Peacock but why do you need more than 1 or 2 for a liveimage?
02:13 hoodedice 16 GB is fucking slow
02:13 hoodedice Can't even run firefox without lag
02:13 Peacock were talking about thumb drives right?
02:14 hoodedice 4 GB was faster, since I used it as virtual disk
02:14 hoodedice Yes
02:15 hoodedice I 'installed' Xubuntu into the 16 GB flash drive
02:16 Peacock ah fuck i never run a system off a drive unless im trying to repair an install, which i've given up on doing for linux going on six years now lol
02:17 hoodedice This toaster has a 75 GB HDD, with 35 GB free.
02:17 hoodedice And it doesn't 'belong' to me either
02:18 hoodedice Well, at least xchat doesn't lag XD
02:22 Peacock i should hope not, irc's been around a long time lol
02:25 hoodedice My respect for HDDs has increased tenfold
02:27 hoodedice WHY THE FUCK IS IT INSTALLING GNOME DESKTOP?
02:27 Peacock it's a feature (TM)
02:27 hoodedice Ubuntu, you're drunk, go homw
02:33 hoodedice Just checked on Amazon: Read speed is 12 MBps
02:34 hoodedice Slower than my phone's SD Card @30+MBps with tweaks and stuff. I think I should noatime this
02:36 trauerlicht if you lag, try irssi :)
02:36 hoodedice irssi? googling
02:36 trauerlicht irssi => xchat alternative
02:36 trauerlicht irssi  + screen = <3
02:37 hoodedice xchat doesn't lag
02:37 Peacock terminal chat :P for people who dont feel l33t enough
02:37 trauerlicht Peacock: sure :)
02:37 hoodedice It's only during bootup and firefox
02:38 Peacock though, a *real* chats with punchcards and courier pigeons :P
02:38 Peacock *real hacker*
02:38 trauerlicht hoodedice: ask yourself why. maybe xchat is the killerapp hehe
02:38 hoodedice XD
02:39 hoodedice Bahaha. it's not. Xchat is lite as fuck
02:39 trauerlicht ok, the only positive fact of irssi is screen
02:39 trauerlicht i cant close it with my own dumbness
02:39 hoodedice That's why it ships with Xubuntu by default
02:40 hoodedice There is no one *dumber* than me
02:40 hoodedice I am the only one who can delete the MBR without keeping any recovery disks at hand
02:41 Peacock didnt know those still existed, the last two pc's i bought didn't have recovery disks lol
02:41 hoodedice recovery disks = Xubuntu live CD
02:41 Peacock was quicker just to pirate windows than try and get a hold of the disc im entitled to lol
02:42 hoodedice I used unetbootin to install AND uninstall
02:43 hoodedice I haven't put in any AMD drivers yet...
02:43 hoodedice And I've heard that catalyst on Linux is crappy
02:44 trauerlicht hoodedice: ok, last thing to mention: you cant close irrsi accidently. this is not possible. (ok, if you take a hammer and slam your pc *accidently*)
02:44 Peacock opensauce gfx drivers are much worse :P
02:45 hoodedice trauerlicht, I can't close xchat by mistake either
02:45 hoodedice Pressing the  x button wil minimize it
02:45 trauerlicht ok, next time i try to think much more simpler :)
02:46 hoodedice XD
02:46 hoodedice Hmm, it's improved now
02:46 hoodedice I think all the crappy low-level updates are over
02:46 trauerlicht but screen is really nice. you can copy a console into another console.
02:47 trauerlicht and close it by mistake and reopen it ...

11:51 reactor How's the science?
12:14 Hirato the science is pretty groovy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rjbtsX7twc
12:28 ImQ009 joined #minetest
12:35 reactor Hirato: :D
12:36 reactor Hell, I've been reading about String theory. Unfortunately, I've been reading the wrong book. Space of Inner Shape by Yau - pure meta, not even a single equation. :(
12:37 trauerlicht reactor: and do you believe in it? im musician and i like the concept thou :)
12:39 reactor Well, as far as I've gotten with reading about it (I'm yet to find proper literature on the theory itself), I like it.
12:39 MinetestBot GIT: sfan5 commited to minetest/minetest: Fix curl dll not getting installed when sound is disabled 3875a77bf8 2014-01-21T04:35:26-08:00 http://git.io/DqVX8g
12:39 reactor I like the idea of using geometry to explain interactions.
12:42 reactor Especially good is the fact string theory doesn't add dimensions just because, it can tell how many we need (although, some of its variants say the umber is 26 and some say it's 10). M-theory is 11-dimensional.
12:45 cornernote i think M-Theory is 10+1 - the 1 being time... but don't quote me on that
12:46 reactor The hell I know, I've been only reading meta.
12:46 reactor I wasted a semester on that book.
12:47 cornernote yeah, theory without math is ... well .. little more than philisophy
12:48 reactor it wasn't even about theory
12:48 cornernote not that there is anything wrong with philosophy
12:48 reactor Well, it wasn't even theory, I mean, it was _about_ theory.
12:48 cornernote just annoying when people confuse it with science
12:48 reactor Philosophy is hard exactly because it's not relying on a language as convenient as math.
12:49 cornernote Philisophy apeals to common sense
12:49 cornernote if we did science that way, we would believe that bowling balls fall faster than golf balls =)
12:49 reactor Math appeals to it, too (to some extent).
12:49 reactor Science does affect common sense.
12:50 cornernote science goes against common sense in many cases
12:50 cornernote it reshapes our common sense
12:50 cornernote not the other way around, like philosophy
12:50 reactor I see your point now.
12:50 reactor I'll be back in a second.
12:51 cornernote u subscribe to any good science channels on YT ?
12:52 cornernote i like these:  minutephysics, scishow, sixty symbols, vsauce
12:52 cornernote the university of youtube =)

14:59 VanessaE or is it executed if a node CAN be placed (even if the placement failed)?
15:02 VanessaE e.g. if a placement action is blocked by the protection code, or by the existence of some smaller node in that space (e.g. microblock or something), will after_place_node still be called?

20:23 squishydale I am a tech for a school.  I think we are going to use MT in some classes
20:24 Jordach squishydale, you're not the first
20:24 squishydale minecraft has become a fad in public schools lately, but I can't sell my administration on buying licenses for kids, etc, etc
20:25 Jordach squishydale, some might have their own
20:25 squishydale yes, a lot of my kids already do
20:25 squishydale another problem is the hardware required
20:26 Jordach squishydale, i can say somewhat against that
20:26 squishydale for our laptops, we purchase a lot of low-power stuff for the battery life
20:26 Jordach yeah
20:26 squishydale i've personally tested minecraft on a few of those, and it runs horrendously slow
20:26 Jordach something like Lubuntu would be a decent choice for low comsumption

20:27 squishydale minetest is fairly snappy tho
20:27 icecream he he
20:27 Jordach failing that, Puppy
20:27 icecream hi Jordach
20:27 Jordach o hai IceCraft
20:28 squishydale is there a way for me to test how many max_players?
20:28 squishydale command or something in the server?
20:28 Jordach squishydale, proller has something for that
20:28 Jordach you can create commandline robots to test it
20:28 squishydale oh cool
20:28 Jordach but i don't know it, (i've heard of it)
20:29 icecream Jordach: BnS is officially dying (yay)
20:29 Jordach say wut
20:29 proller minetest does not support headless client
20:30 proller freeminer - support
20:30 icecream Reason: Spring is now mod on bns. So total dictatorship
20:30 Jordach proller, freeminer is full of unfinished patches
20:30 proller you can test minetest with freeminer bots ;)
20:30 Jordach icecream, uhoh
20:30 proller Jordach, minetest is whole unfinished
20:30 Jordach icecream, such dicktator, such ass, many fucks not given
20:30 proller wich patches unfinished?
20:31 PilzAdam squishydale, /set max_players   in-game to read the setting
20:31 squishydale fantasitc
20:31 icecream wow rude Jordach
20:31 squishydale thanks PilzAdam

21:18 Jordach http://mg.viewskew.com/u/jordach/m/walking-test-3/ <- one hour later
21:35 * VanessaE peeks in...  proller, ask my users why they seem to have no significant trouble playing.  Today's peak was 29, and lately my servers have been floating to the top of the server list.
21:35 VanessaE I've been taking the top slot away from you.  your argument is invalid.
21:35 VanessaE and I don't even know wtf I did to make it work as well as it does!
21:36 Jordach VanessaE, walking test 3 :)_
21:36 VanessaE meh, minecraft :P
21:36 Jordach VanessaE, i remembered why IK was fucking useful
21:36 VanessaE Jordach: don't do a "right face!" as he turns coming out of the doorway.
21:36 Jordach i just move three bones for a walking pose
21:37 VanessaE make the turn more organic.  it's too sharp
21:37 VanessaE the rest looks good, maybe a little slow and methodical
21:37 VanessaE like he's....sneaking almost
21:37 Jordach VanessaE, i'll smooth it out with more keyframes
21:37 proller VanessaE, but wait 10-60 seconds to load block...
21:37 Jordach each step is 15 frames, the video is played at 24
21:37 VanessaE proller: nope.avi
21:37 VanessaE no one else has to wait
21:38 VanessaE blocks load super fast for me and almost everyone else.
21:38 VanessaE proller: I blame the network between Canada and Russia.
21:38 proller no, its not network.
21:38 VanessaE then explain the problem, because no one else is complaining of such lags
21:39 VanessaE the only time my servers lag is due to mapgen lag.
21:39 VanessaE the network NEVER lags unless that occasional sign-on glitch happens, and there's already a fix pending for that.
21:40 Jordach proller, you're deluded with grandeur of FM being network wise superior
21:40 proller try to join and walk when 15+ users online
21:40 Jordach you can remove the network wise and it's the same
21:41 daswort omg i have a nice plattform build in the hill above the sea and a few days ago i throw a few snow balls in the water, but the never reached the sea. so now i swimm in the sea and several snow balls come from the sky and splash (with sound in the water.
21:41 daswort or is there an entity that throws snow balls?
21:41 VanessaE daswort: they were stored when you threw them
21:42 VanessaE daswort: they went into unloaded blocks and got stashed away I guess
21:42 VanessaE when the blocks loaded, the entities loaded too, and continued their journey.
21:43 daswort cool
21:43 daswort btw are snow balls useful for some purpose?
21:43 VanessaE yeah, for splatting people in the face ;)
21:43 VanessaE really though, for making snow blocks
21:44 VanessaE which, with the snow biomes mod, can be turned into snow/ice bricks I think
21:45 PilzAdam daswort, lol
21:45 daswort i tried 3x3 snow balls in the crafting menu but no luck VanessaE
21:45 Jordach it might be 2x2
21:46 daswort oh 2x2 i see, a bit cheap
21:46 daswort thanks Jordach
21:49 bas080 joined #minetest
21:51 daswort is there a mod where torches emit light when hold by a player`
21:53 PilzAdam only a hacky one
21:56 JackGruff PilzAdam, is that feature ever going to be in? Because it doesn't look like something mods can do alone
21:56 PilzAdam there is a pull request for it, put it only works with shaders
21:56 JackGruff so...?
21:56 PilzAdam and gameplay advantages when using shaders is not good
21:57 JackGruff oh. you're are afraid those who can't use shaders will be at a disadvantage?
21:57 PilzAdam yep
21:57 JackGruff well
21:57 JackGruff maybe it could be a server restriction
21:59 VanessaE brb
22:00 Hirato joined #minetest
22:02 daswort but a high viewing range is also an advantage which is on the side of player with more powerful hardware, same for shaders
22:02 daswort btw: the fog doesn't cover holes in the world if vieweing range is 1005+
22:04 PilzAdam do you mean missing mapblocks by "holes in the world"?
22:05 daswort i think, yes. large chunks that aren't generated because the player isn't near enought
22:05 PilzAdam thats because the server decides what to send to the server
22:06 PilzAdam *to the client
22:06 daswort local game
22:06 PilzAdam the view range has no effect on it
22:06 PilzAdam you have to change max_block_send_range or so in minetest.conf for that
22:09 daswort mgv6_freq_desert defines how large deserts are or how often? because i get a high density of deserts…
22:09 PilzAdam yea, I guess
