Hi |
03:35 |
OldCoder |
ShadowNinja, VanessaE I did a git clone of |
03:35 |
VanessaE |
hi |
03:35 |
OldCoder |
https://github.com/minetest/minetest.git |
03:36 |
OldCoder |
Hi |
03:36 |
OldCoder |
then cd into the folder |
03:36 |
OldCoder |
then |
03:36 |
OldCoder |
git checkout stable-0.4 |
03:36 |
OldCoder |
then git pull |
03:36 |
OldCoder |
said up to date |
03:36 |
VanessaE |
that seems right |
03:36 |
OldCoder |
why didn't it revert any of the changes from upstream bleeding edge? |
03:36 |
* OldCoder |
is curious |
03:36 |
VanessaE |
that I don't know, but 0.4.8 is already out of date due to bugfixes |
03:36 |
OldCoder |
when I did the git clone |
03:37 |
OldCoder |
shouldn't it have pulled the latest? |
03:37 |
OldCoder |
nvm bugfixes curious about how it works |
03:37 |
ShadowNinja |
OldCoder: The checkout updates your working directory. |
03:37 |
OldCoder |
But I saw no downloads |
03:37 |
OldCoder |
Shouldn't it have downloaded more files? |
03:37 |
OldCoder |
t y for thoughts |
03:38 |
ShadowNinja |
OldCoder: No, as master contains all of the commits in stable-0.4. |
03:38 |
OldCoder |
Ah |
03:38 |
OldCoder |
so git clone |
03:38 |
OldCoder |
gets stable too? |
03:38 |
OldCoder |
But are you now recommending |
03:38 |
OldCoder |
git bleeding edge? |
03:39 |
ShadowNinja |
OldCoder: Yes, as stable is a subset of master. I would recommend master due to SQLite rollback and a LevelDB fix. |

I've downloaded the and vines and ropebox mod and the plants_lib, but can't seem to figure out how to make rope or a ropebox. I've tried several different configurations with assorted plants and leaves and it never does anything. I'm trying to get my gold laden body out of a very precarious position in the bottom of a volcano, there's starting to get a stack of corpses in there. |

Has anyone successfully run a Minetest server from a VPS? |
08:19 |
VanessaE |
I do. |
08:19 |
VanessaE |
Five of them, from a Linode instance, to be exact. |
08:20 |
xiong |
I'm sure you do. You, of all people, are probably not serving off a laptop. |
08:20 |
VanessaE |
heh, nope. |
08:20 |
xiong |
However, all the docs I'm turning up seem geared to that crowd: the "I wanna run a server off my laptop through my home broadband connection when Mom and Dad aren't looking" crowd. |
08:21 |
xiong |
I believe I have successfully installed minetest-server 0.4.8 in my VPS. |
08:22 |
xiong |
I theorize that minetest.conf will need to be substantially different from one in which key mappings are given. |
08:22 |
VanessaE |
not really. |
08:23 |
xiong |
Well. |
08:23 |
|
aheinecke joined #minetest |

... for some value of "substantially". I'm autistic so I consider anything past a blank line, significant. |
08:24 |
VanessaE |
here's te config I use on my survival server: |
08:24 |
VanessaE |
http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/6518609/ |
08:24 |
VanessaE |
the other four are substantially similar |
08:25 |
VanessaE |
differing mostly in the MOTD and master server stuff (lines 17-24) |
08:25 |
xiong |
Ha, far out. |
08:25 |
VanessaE |
creative is the only other one that uses the remote_media feature |
08:25 |
xiong |
I did the stupidest possible thing and started the server with no config file at all. Connected from my own desktop client. Works. |
08:25 |
VanessaE |
(for that, you need to set up a webserver; I use nginx, per thexyz's suggestion) |
08:27 |
VanessaE |
lines 27-29 and 32-34 are mod-specific, you can ignore those. line 16 is a leftover from an old config |
08:28 |
VanessaE |
at the very very least, you need the name= and server_*= lines, and you should have a static_spawnpoint and motd. |
08:28 |
VanessaE |
the rest just depends on personal preference, level of risk (e.g the map save interval), etc. |
08:29 |
xiong |
Um... but I started the server without any of that. |
08:29 |
VanessaE |
yep I know |
08:29 |
VanessaE |
without a name= parameter, the server doesn't know who the admin is. |
08:30 |
VanessaE |
without the server_*= lines, it won't announce to the master server lisr |
08:30 |
VanessaE |
list* |
08:30 |
VanessaE |
motd is for other clients, works like an irc motd but shorter. |
08:31 |
VanessaE |
a static spawnpoint is a must. without it, people may spawn inside trees, in the water, underground, etc. instead of wherever you want them to, e.g. a specific building |
08:31 |
VanessaE |
rollback recording is essential to protect against griefing to some degree. you can use it to undo others' damage. |
08:32 |
xiong |
Well, the last thing I want to do with a testing server is announce it. |
08:32 |
VanessaE |
default privs almost always needs to be set, as without it I seem to recall everyone gets shout, interact, and eh I forget the other one. maybe noclip. You'll likely want to avoid granting interact by default, but you may on the other hand want to give everyone fast, perhaps fly. |
08:32 |
xiong |
No, I don't mean to continue from this point. No configuration, no mods, nothing. |
08:32 |
VanessaE |
ok |
08:33 |
VanessaE |
well surely you will leave the 'testing' phase and make it public, or at least shared to a few friends. you still need at least some of that ^^^ |
08:33 |
xiong |
I'm just happy it works at all. That puts me over several bars, including a half-hour lecture from the Debian wonks about how I should never have installed the unstable package the way I did. And they may well be right... but the proof of the pudding is, it works. |

Microchip: the short version is that the JIT compiler runs through the code in a few seconds, one time, at server start-up. After that, until the next start, only the compiled results are run. |
18:22 |
VanessaE |
what costs a few seconds at startup saves minutes, possibly hours for really complex code, over time. |

No; and I don't see, then, why I want to do any configuration at all, of any kind, outside of some dedicated user account. |
21:15 |
xiong |
It's a service; it should be run by a service (fake) user. |
21:15 |
xiong |
I mean, it's not an essential service so why have it anywhere outside of '/home'? |

it uses both |
21:17 |

i want to use only gpu, my cpu is poor and don't want to put all effort on it :] |
21:18 |
Calinou |
you can't |
21:19 |
Calinou |
CPU will always be needed for a GPU to work |
21:19 |

rendering calls put stress on the CPU too |

Calinou: can you please change moreblocks/stairsplus to use the invertwall feature of the rotate_and_place() call. forcewall is turning out to be rather cumbersome in practice, at least with stairs/slabs. |

Esteban, the IRC mod can use any channel as relay |
21:54 |
Calinou |
however, if someone uses this channel as a relay, I think the bot would get quieted (which means people can say stuff to the server, but not the inverse) |
