well you might have tornados in the midwest, but compared to english weather and cooking, i'd rather take my chances with a tornado/sharknado XD |

01:50 |

i figured out the problem, it was a namespace thing |

P, these shadow glitches you see in asteroid lvm/pm, could they be shadows from asteroids above which have been generated but have not yet appeared because the player has not 'looked' at them yet? Also perhaps test with +16 -16 removed from 'calc lighting'? |
03:31 |
Peacock |
do i need p1/p2 at all? it doesnt say so in the api.txt |
03:32 |
Peacock |
did you find any such shadows yourself? |
03:32 |
paramat |
relevant discussion on shadows http://irc.minetest.ru/minetest/2013-11-17#i_3440850 could be a problem |
03:33 |
paramat |
i didnt find glitchy shadows in the pre-LVM version |
03:33 |
paramat |
if there was a shadow there was something above casting it |
03:33 |
* paramat |
looks at code |
03:34 |
Peacock |
well it's definately something to do with calc_lighting |
03:35 |
Peacock |
i wish we could simply disable shadows all together, they've never worked properly lol |

03:38 |
paramat |
yeah api.txt doesnt mention p1,p2, but those seem to be required in use |
03:40 |
paramat |
so it seems possible shadows will get glitchy and ugly in an asteroid realm :( |

Peacock, hmm-mm's LVM example has "minetest.set_mapgen_params({mgname="singlenode", flags="nolight", flagmask="nolight"})" at the beginning, not certain what 'nolight' does but might help |
04:36 |
Peacock |
yeah, just noticed while exploring, when i go below y <0, all the asteroids are dark |
04:37 |
Peacock |
(another example of minetest being hardcoded for one game lol) |
04:39 |
Peacock |
do you know how i'd set it to not get fugly shadows on the lower half of the map? |
04:45 |
Peacock |
is it wise to set SCAL5 any lower than 16? or should i rather reduce ORECHA? |
04:47 |
paramat |
no idea about dark asteroids, i think we may need hmm-mm's help :) |
04:48 |
paramat |
SCAL5 less than 16 will make the perlin ore distribution too fine, i would say 32-128, i chose 128 to create asteroids rich in particular ores |
04:49 |
paramat |
since asteroids are apparently super rich in ores an ORECHA of 3*3*3 mght be a good idea |
04:49 |
|
Menche left #minetest |
04:50 |
paramat |
noise5 now varies from -1 to 1 in asteroid lvm/pm so you should adjust your ore noise ranges accordingly |
04:50 |
Peacock |
the thing is i need each asteroid to have a variety of ores, maybe not all 7 of them, but 4-5 would be good |
04:51 |
paramat |
OCTA5 = 1 means noise varies from -1 to 1 |
04:51 |
Peacock |
thats already done :-) |
04:51 |
Peacock |
i adapted your 0.11 lvmversion |
04:52 |
paramat |
ah okay SCAL5 defines the distance over which you will find all ores (roughly) |
04:52 |
paramat |
so i would go 32 or 64 |
04:53 |
Peacock |
i set scal5 to 16 and orecha to 3pow3, im just looking now for a big asteroid to scan it for ores |
04:54 |
paramat |
you certainly need the singlenode mapgen to disable normal landscape at y = 0 |
04:54 |
paramat |
otherwise the normal terrain is generated then immediately removed by asteroid mod |
04:54 |
Peacock |
yeah, whats even weirder is sometimes i arrive at a new area, the asteroid is dark and parts of it lighten up |

06:15 |
hmmmm |
the answers to the questions: |
06:16 |
hmmmm |
the lua documentation doesn't mention the minp and maxp parameters to calc_lighting because they're not existing any longer. i removed them because the lua modder would never need that sort of power and it'd only serve to screw up the lighting, i'm not sure if a modder can use it a way other than i originally had it that'd work as intended |
06:16 |
VanessaE |
your timing is impeccable, as always ;) |
06:17 |
hmmmm |
set_lighting sets lighting in the voxelmanip exactly to the light you specify, does not calculate |
06:17 |
hmmmm |
the nolight flag is a mapgen parameter that disables all lighting computations, which is very helpful for when you're doing a total mapgen replacement in lua |
06:19 |
hmmmm |
in order to not get lighting glitches, you have to either set the nolight flag or call vmanip:set_lighting({day=0, night=0}) before calling vmanip:calc_lighting() in order to get correct lighting results |

also, there's airplane mode and such. The carrier can't reach your phone if it doesn't know where it is, doesn't know where it is if it's not being pinged, and the phone won't ping towers in airplane mode due to restrictions on stuff like airplane use... |

it's kind of ironic, but in the old proprietary commercial world, the software controlled the users, and they didn't like it. GNU and Apple provided 2 different solutions: in the GNU world, users control the software, and in the Apple world, users like being told what to do. |

Warr1024, I was able to reproduce your bug: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/issues/1012#issuecomment-28837080 |
21:26 |
Warr1024 |
awesome |
21:26 |
PilzAdam |
I recommend to change the chat key to fix it |
21:26 |
Warr1024 |
this only happens with enter? |
21:26 |
PilzAdam |
or upgrade to Irrlicht 1.8 |
21:26 |
PilzAdam |
AFAIK yes |
21:27 |
Warr1024 |
upgrading isn't a great general-purpose solution since many OS's ship with pre-1.8 irrlicht by default, and building updated versions from source, or adding PPA's is not trivial for most users... |
21:27 |
PilzAdam |
yea, thats because my first suggestion is to not use enter ;-) |
21:27 |
Warr1024 |
A lot of my friends and I are used to binding enter to chat. |
21:27 |
Warr1024 |
it's probably one of the more popular bindings... |
21:28 |
PilzAdam |
enter is pretty far away from WASD or the mouse... |
21:28 |
Warr1024 |
yeah, but when you type you aren't just using wasd. |
21:28 |
PilzAdam |
true |
21:29 |
Warr1024 |
switching between play/chat mode tends to require at least movement of the mouse hand. |
21:29 |
Warr1024 |
I actually use ASDF/Space instead of Space/SADW. |
21:29 |
PilzAdam |
well, the backtrace is there, people can fix it if they want |
21:29 |
Warr1024 |
it's less intuitive, but tires out the fingers much less. |
21:29 |
DanCooper |
Warr1024: how is that? |
21:30 |
PilzAdam |
I need to sleep now; bye |
21:30 |
DanCooper |
do you have problems with crouching or anything like that? |
21:30 |
Warr1024 |
bye |
21:30 |
Warr1024 |
inb4 :-) |
21:30 |
Warr1024 |
DanCooper: not much. I crouch with LShift, and I usually bend my pinky and use my knuckle if I'm going to do it for a long time. |
21:31 |
Warr1024 |
Space = forward, D/F are strafe left/right, S is backwards, an A is jump. |
21:31 |
DanCooper |
Warr1024: do you play all fpses like that? |
21:31 |
DanCooper |
i was going to try that for awhile |
21:31 |
Warr1024 |
I do, but the results are mixed, depending on the play style. |
21:32 |
Warr1024 |
basically, just rest your hand on the home keys |
21:32 |
Warr1024 |
then assign buttons with the most commonly-used (especially sustained or rapidly-repeated) functions to the strongest fingers. |
21:32 |
Warr1024 |
i.e. thumb, then index/middle, then ring, then pinky. |
21:32 |
Warr1024 |
I also often assign functions to nearby alphabetic keys. |
21:33 |
Warr1024 |
(of course, all of this is on a USA 101-key layout; int'l users will need to adapt accordingly). |
21:33 |
bas080 |
how would i give someone the privs to revoke and grant privs? |
21:33 |
bas080 |
basicly make someone admin on the server where i am the admin |
21:33 |
Menche |
the privs priv allows granting privs |
21:34 |
Warr1024 |
does the privs priv allow granting the privs priv? |
21:34 |
bas080 |
am checking |
21:34 |
Menche |
or basic_privs allows granting interact and shout (i think) |
21:35 |
Warr1024 |
DanCooper: the main weakness I've found with ASDF/Space is that the pinky tends to get overused, esp. for jumping. I work around this by meticulously building stairs on any well-travelled path :-) |

Warr1024: why would you use pinky for jumping? |
21:49 |
Warr1024 |
DanCooper: I dunno, I used thumb for forward, middle and index for strafe left and right, and ring finger for backwards. |
21:50 |
Warr1024 |
I want to be able to do any reasonable combination of any of those while jumping, so I can't reuse an existing finger; that leaves only the pinky for the jump key. |
21:51 |
Warr1024 |
I don't really want to break up the semi-intuitive D/F strafe pair either. |
21:51 |
Warr1024 |
otherwise, for something like MT, I guess I'd go with forward, jump, then strafe, then backpedal. |

from what I understand, it happens when the cart tries to move into a chunk that isn't loaded in memory (seems like the graphical representation an the actual chunk data are separate, so you may be able to see chunks that aren't actually loaded, but I could be wrong) |
23:39 |
Partmedia |
are chunks ever unloaded after being loaded? |
23:41 |
deltib |
I don't know that much about the inner workings of the engine, I'm basing this on what I've heard other people say and my own observations, but yes, I believe the chunks are loaded and unloaded as you move around |
