any recommendations for a VPS provider? perferrably in the USA. my current provider is ceasing their VPS operations at the end of july |

horror stories welcomed too. nothing worse than choosing a vps with problems. |
16:11 |
VanessaE |
well you sure as hell don't wanna go with whoever it is that's hosting the forums :P |
16:11 |
TommyTreasure |
i totally agree on that one! |

too lite |

150G storage suits my current needs |
16:12 |
VanessaE |
also, unless they've improved their DDOS handing, avoid Linode. |

current service was very affordable, and had almost flawless service for 2 years |
16:14 |
VanessaE |
you might consider a Kimsufi or SoYouStart dedicated server. the former is a little slow but cheap af, while the the latter costs a bit more (but is still inexpensive) and is quite fast |
16:14 |
VanessaE |
and they're OVH subsidiaries, so good DDoS protection |
16:14 |
TommyTreasure |
i'm paying 20/mo for the 150G storage, and can't remember the rest of the specs |
16:15 |
TommyTreasure |
at least the current one gave a 4 month heads up |
16:15 |
VanessaE |
kimsufi's cheapest in-stock server is about $18/mo: KS-7Intel i3-21302c/4t3.4GHz8GB DDR3 1333 MHz 2TB 100 Mbps/128$17.99 |
16:15 |
VanessaE |
https://www.kimsufi.com/us/en/servers.xml |
16:17 |
TommyTreasure |
2TB? wow! |
16:17 |
VanessaE |
their disk speeds leaves a little bit to be desired, but for low-end uses, you can solve that with some aggressive cacheing. |
16:18 |
VanessaE |
I use a SoYouStart server to run my stuff on, so maybe I'm slightly biased ;) |
16:18 |
TommyTreasure |
that could be an issue. 2 maps, and a small, low volume web server |
16:18 |
VanessaE |
nah, it isn't THAT slow |
16:19 |
VanessaE |
I just meant in my use-case (my servers really need the speed the SSDs in their current box provide) |
16:19 |
TommyTreasure |
'tis when you're near the limit for registered nodes :) |
16:19 |
VanessaE |
heh |
16:19 |
TommyTreasure |
neither one of my games are high volume |
16:19 |
VanessaE |
give Kimsufi a try then :) |
16:20 |
VanessaE |
it's paid monthly if you want, so you can quickly go elsewhere if it doesn't work out |
16:20 |
TommyTreasure |
i usually do auto pay |
16:20 |
VanessaE |
(can you tell I'm biased against VPSs? :P ) |
16:21 |
TommyTreasure |
what's the diff with SoYouStart? |
16:21 |
VanessaE |
as I understand, SYS gets their servers from OVH when they're retired/decommissioned, then Kimsufi gets theirs from SYS under the same conditions. |
16:22 |
VanessaE |
so it's basically as you go from one to the next, the servers get faster and more expensive. |
16:23 |
VanessaE |
you know, different market segments. |
16:23 |
TommyTreasure |
42/month is out of my budget though.. :( |
16:24 |
VanessaE |
so go to the $18/mo one. :) |
16:25 |
VanessaE |
(no I don't get some kind of commission, I'm just a satisfied customer :) ) |
16:26 |
TommyTreasure |
the reason my current one gave was that their "OpenVZ 6" was at end of life, and they wouldn't be renewing |
16:29 |
sfan5 |
OpenVZ 7 exists though, so sounds like unwillingness to continue |
16:29 |
TommyTreasure |
i guess they make much more profit in their web hosting part of the business, than on their vps part |
16:32 |
rubenwardy |
I use the $18 kimsufi it performs worse than a VPS |
16:32 |
rubenwardy |
Because it's a HDD |
16:33 |
TommyTreasure |
i've had zero issues with ipxcore, exept for one of my own mistake |
16:34 |
TommyTreasure |
in fact, i have 2 accounts with them |

hmmm, seems my provider also offeres kvm services too. now i'm totally confused on their notice to me |
16:40 |
TommyTreasure |
so confused, i can't spell either except nor offers :) |
16:41 |
sfan5 |
sounds like they are only removing part of their vps offerings |
16:41 |
sfan5 |
since KVM is an alternative technology to OpenVZ |
16:41 |
TommyTreasure |
time to open a ticket with them and find out. thanks for the input and info though |
16:43 |
TommyTreasure |
maybe not so affordable though, i'd have to add additional disk space. would probably double my cost |

:'( |
23:34 |
Sokomine |
make that a severe dislike |
23:35 |
Sokomine |
i do like realtest, and i want to support wuzzys new version of it. but..somehow..the alias problem got more severe there for my mods |
23:35 |
Sokomine |
handle_schematics often works on content_ids...which is very bad if the node as such does not exist |
23:38 |
Sokomine |
well...at least there's some slow progress now.... |
23:44 |
rubenwardy |
get_content_ids should work on aliases |
23:48 |
Sokomine |
doesn't seem to do it. had several crashes with that |
