github has a comment box at the bottom of every commit |

15:01 |
Bobr |
my old towers on dual boot |
15:01 |
rubenwardy |
You can't turn off shaders |
15:01 |
Bobr |
^ |
15:01 |
rubenwardy |
Only make minetest pretend they don't exist |
15:02 |
tenplus1 |
if it has VT-x support you can have virtualbox on it and have 1 desktop running xubuntu and the other running win7/10 fast as in native speed |
15:02 |
rubenwardy |
Shaders aren't slow, and can actually make a game faster |
15:02 |
tenplus1 |
if the gfx card is fast enough, yes... |
15:02 |
Mr_Pardison_ |
but the frame drops on older hardware.... |
15:02 |
rubenwardy |
It's just minetest sucks |
15:02 |
Krock |
rubenwardy: only if you can move the CPU tasks to the GPU |
15:02 |
Bobr |
i kinda set my old towers on fire... XD |
15:07 |
rubenwardy |
The fact of the matter is that it's impossible to turn shaders off, so the slow down is either due to data transfer or more calculations |
15:07 |
rubenwardy |
And I'm placing my money on the former |
15:08 |
Fixer |
rubenwardy: they are very slooow on hardware I've tested |
15:08 |
rubenwardy |
Either that, or maybe they're doing some crazy emulation shit in the integrated processor |
15:08 |
Fixer |
i recommend disabling shaders to everyone running it on weak cards or on integrated |
15:09 |
rubenwardy |
Shaders cannot be disabled |
15:09 |
Fixer |
in minetest? |
15:09 |
rubenwardy |
The setting just means that minetest doesn't send any new information or compile custom shaders |
15:09 |
rubenwardy |
There will still be shaders on the GPU |
15:10 |
Fixer |
disabling shaders in minetest settings helps a lot, especially on weak gpus |
15:11 |
Mr_Pardison_ |
yup. |
15:11 |
rubenwardy |
Does minetest still use tangent space based on that setting? Or was that fixes |
15:12 |
Fixer |
probably fixed |
15:12 |
Bobr |
new wifi bois |
15:13 |
Fixer |
but there still performance penalty |
15:13 |
tenplus1 |
if I disable shaders it jumps from 34fps up to 50'ish |
15:13 |
tenplus1 |
so if they are always running why the hit ?! |
15:14 |
rubenwardy |
More data transfer probably |
15:14 |
Fixer |
and difference in picture is minimal |
15:14 |
Fixer |
so why play with subpar 34 fps when you can get decent 50 fps? |
15:15 |
tenplus1 |
I have everything disabled just for that... 50fps+ |
15:15 |
tenplus1 |
something needs tweaked to improve performance |
15:17 |
Fixer |
that glorious SFS patch reduced penalty to just 10% (down from 50%) for my now dead HD6870 gpu |
15:17 |
Fixer |
i should test performance with/without on intel hd 2500 |
15:17 |

15:18 |
rubenwardy |
Excess data transfer |
15:18 |
rubenwardy |
Weaker GPUs can't deal with as much transfer |
15:18 |
Fixer |
but it did not help on my 2009 laptop with intel hd, with shaders performance was like 5 fps, without - 25 fps... |
15:18 |
tenplus1 |
only does that on 5.0 though fixer, 0.4.17 doesnt have it yhet |
15:18 |
Fixer |
tenplus1: it was fixed long ago |
15:19 |
tenplus1 |
ohh, so it is in0.4.16 then ? |
15:19 |
Fixer |
yes |
15:19 |
rubenwardy |
My point anyway is that shaders aren't inherently bad, it's just minetest doesn't do them well |
15:19 |
tenplus1 |
kewl |
15:19 |
rubenwardy |
And there's little benefit in their current state anyway |
15:20 |
rubenwardy |
But in the future I think it should be fixed so that shaders with no extra settings is not much slower even on weak hardware |
15:20 |
rubenwardy |
Then we can add features that require shaders to actually be practical |
15:20 |
rubenwardy |
Like hand held torches |
15:20 |
Fixer |

15:24 |
