13:09 rubenwardy test
13:09 rubenwardy odd
13:15 Fixer rubenwardy: passed
13:15 ThomasMonroe even
13:16 Fixer heh, neat https://i.redd.it/mj1m6dnck5o01.png
13:16 Fixer it has small error, but still impressive trick
13:17 Mr_Pardison very impressive indeed.
13:17 ThomasMonroe heh never thought of doing that

13:52 Fixer in minetest https://i.imgur.com/YFlwrwN.png
13:54 twoelk looks cool
13:54 twoelk now mirror the player :-D
13:56 Fixer only strange thing is lighting is different for roofs
13:56 Fixer both are corals, both have equal lights, yet one is much darker
13:57 * rubenwardy wonders how hard a mirror would be
13:58 Mr_Pardison I could ask someone who is adept with lighting over on RC if they would be able to do this kind of thing with the lighting levels being the same.

14:04 Fixer lol https://i.imgur.com/d1SQQQD.png
14:11 Fixer probably it is caused by block shading
14:11 Fixer hmmm
14:14 Shara Fixer: more I look at tool progression, the more problems I find...
14:15 Fixer Shara: yes, it is total cf
14:15 Shara I'm making summary of all issues
14:15 Shara There's absolutely nothing about how tools are handled which doesn't hurt my head
14:16 Shara Issues with steel/bronze aren't even close to the top...
14:27 Fixer here is original that inspired me https://i.redd.it/mj1m6dnck5o01.png
14:28 Shara Saw it above... funny enough, the mistake in it stopped me understanding what it was meant to be at first

14:30 Fixer we can rotate chests \o/
14:31 ThomasMonroe O.O we can?!?
14:32 Fixer yes, look on my screenshot, mirrored ones are upside down - https://i.imgur.com/d1SQQQD.png
14:32 Fixer via screwdriver
14:33 ThomasMonroe :O
14:33 Fixer eh, too bad we can't rotate doors, that will be epic
14:33 ThomasMonroe *mind blown*
14:34 Fixer closer look https://i.imgur.com/pGb6G3M.png
14:35 ThomasMonroe neat

14:40 Fixer Shara: another though, forbid digging of same types by same type of tool, for example stone with stone, steel with steel, instead require higher tool, stone tool on wood, steel wood on stone, diamond tool on steel/metals, beginning of progression is tricky though
14:41 Fixer Shara: that was unrelated to that you posted
14:42 Fixer just a neat idea
14:42 Fixer how can you work with steel tools on steel? :D
14:42 Shara Yes, one I thought about before
14:42 Fixer it has same hardness
14:42 Fixer or wood digging rock? that is silly
14:42 Shara I'd prefer a syste where same level tool and node = very slow digging, but digging anything of a lower level is efficient
14:42 Shara system*
14:43 Fixer good thing to keep in mind: do not make gameplay boring
14:43 Shara But as it is... you can dig all but one cracky node within a couple of minutes of finding a tree (assuming you know what you're doing)
14:44 Shara So you go from nothing to pretty much maxed out capability in terms of what you can access in no time at all
14:46 Fixer yes
14:47 Fixer minecraft does this better, their ores are rare as hell, apart from coal, finding iron at game start is very painful to me
14:47 Fixer in minetest ores are readily available -> fast progression
14:48 Fixer don't forget there are two problematic couples of tools: bronze vs steel, and diamond vs mese
14:49 Fixer Shara: my suggestion that can help is add special abilities for bronze and mese tools
14:50 Shara depends on the abilities
14:50 Fixer Shara: say, bronze will have "silk-touch" ability, so you can pick up blocks with ores and stones without converting them to lumps and cobbles, nice for decorative purposes
14:51 Shara Those are barely what I'd call decorative
14:52 Fixer some people like to use those, stone with ore I've seen on some servers (hometown, LL, jt2)
14:53 Fixer so you can put stone with iron in your decorated shaft or cave
14:53 Fixer one sec
14:57 Fixer Shara: https://i.imgur.com/2njcLn6.png
14:59 Shara Yea, I know.. I just find it weird/ugly
14:59 Shara Probably because I find the ore textures ugly.. but I never saw any I liked in texture packs either
15:03 Fixer adding abilities to some of those tools will be better way, or people will just use steel and diamond/mese and be done with it
15:03 Shara Needs better abilities than that
15:03 Fixer possibly
15:04 Fixer also, we have tons of hoes... i hope they have at least different durability

15:11 Fixer Shara: i've read that text, yes, it is confusing, and a big mess, just look at how much tools we have, almost all colour of the rainbow - https://github.com/minetest/minetest_game/issues/1681#issuecomment-347047311
15:12 Shara Yes - was even staring at that when I started writing
15:12 Fixer six tiers of tools, literally
15:16 Fixer few ideas: much more rare metal ores at the surface? (up to level -256 for example), special abilities OR removal of some tiers (like bronze and mese), bronze is costly so needs special case, what is the case for mese tools? adding more cracky groups is not possible without redefining current stuff?
15:17 Shara The way the levels work is... confusing
15:17 Fixer hoe problem maybe not a problem if you pretent you like FANCY hoes :D
15:17 Fixer it is
15:17 Shara You get both cracky = whatever and maxlevel = whatever to define what can be dug
15:18 Fixer probably because initial chaotic development of MTG in early days with then addition of stuff without thinking
15:18 Shara But in one, higher number means more difficult to dig, in the other it means easier
15:18 Shara Seems like, apart from the case of diamond block, all maxlevel exists for is making digging a little slower
15:19 Shara for diamond block, it also further restricts which picks can dig it
15:20 Shara (note that I've only checked default nodes.lua and not other MTG mods, so maybe there are other special case nodes)
15:20 Fixer it is hard to understand even on fresh head
15:22 Fixer also, paramat often said that game should be simple, yet we ended up with 30 tools with very unclear progression :D
15:38 Fixer removing them will be too extreme and sad to players
15:39 Fixer better approach is somehow rebalance current tools, add abilities to bronze and mese, think about cracky, rare metal ores near surface
15:39 Fixer good luck with that :D
15:40 Shara I honestly don't know if it can be done
15:40 Shara But at least I stared at it enough that I think I understand the problems now

16:48 twoelk I think mt can cope with silly tools - after all it's about making meaningfull decisions - you only make a wooden axe once and then you learned your lesson - so leave the oppertunity to make wrong decisions, it ads to the experience
16:49 rubenwardy maybe, but I'd say it's better to have some progression
16:51 twoelk said nothing to exclude progression
16:52 twoelk and am all for redesigning tool balance, just saying there might be a place for silly tools
17:00 sofar I've always thought a tin bucket would be great
17:13 Fixer probably
17:20 Fixer copper only use is tin pretty much :)

17:43 twoelk copper is more important in mods like technic
17:45 twoelk maybe the weighting should be somewhat nonlinear - like a diamond shovel being decorative but else a stupid idea as it breaks too fast to be of any use

19:34 rud0lf minetest.register_on_punchplayer(func(player, hitter, time_from_last_punch, tool_capabilities, dir, damage)
19:35 rud0lf can "hitter" be something else than player? more precisely, can hitter:get_player_name() throw "attempt to index a nil value" ?
19:36 rud0lf or return nil?
19:39 sfan5 sure, mobs can punch players
19:42 rud0lf hm
