let me present a contrary anecdote: I own two odroids, both have seen prolonged periods of 24/7 use and are completely fine |
00:33 |

Is it normal that MT network packets seem to block my entire internet? |
14:46 |
IhrFussel |
It's like whenever someone joins/leaves or some other packets are sent my PC will delay every other connection |
14:47 |
Megaf |
IhrFussel: It depends on how your NIC is connected to your system |
14:47 |
Megaf |
On systems with very weak CPUs and USB NICs Minetest will drag the whole system down, yes |
14:47 |
Megaf |
for example, the first gen Raspberry Pi |
14:47 |
Jordach |
UDP does screw up crap network connections |
14:47 |

Shara i agree that the mapgen limit setting should not remove anyhting, it should only stop new terrain generation outside the limit. this was hmmmm's intent too |
14:55 |
paramat |
problem is some are seeing it as 'the new edge of the world' and wanting to eliminate everything beyond it |
14:55 |
red-001 |
it can? |
14:56 |
Shara |
Hi paramat |
14:56 |
paramat |
looking at 'objectops over limit' that is set to 31000 so where is the code that removes objects at 'mapgen limit'? |
14:57 |
Shara |
I've already had what seems to be two more attempts to generate extra map yet again on RC, so as you can imagine, not feeling very happy that I can't stop ANY new mapblocks being created |
14:58 |
IhrFussel |
paramat, objects being removed if outsie mapgen limit was intended to fix server crashes |
14:58 |
Megaf |
<IhrFussel> paramat, objects being removed if outsie mapgen limit was intended to fix server crashes |
14:58 |
Megaf |
I remember that |
14:59 |
Megaf |
My server was a victim of a bug of objects outside the mapgen crashing teh server |
15:00 |
paramat |
Ihr no you're confusing 31000 with 'mapgen limit' setting |
15:00 |
Megaf |
? |
15:00 |
IhrFussel |
No , the server will crash if ANY entity tries to run outside the mapgen limit |
15:01 |
paramat |
everything out to 31000 should always work, 'mapgen limit' should only limit mapgen (obviously) |
15:01 |
IhrFussel |
But when players stand at the edge of mapgen and suddenly a mob tries to spawn outside it will crash the server AFAIK |
15:01 |
paramat |
if it crashes it is because of code elsewhere that is treating 'mapgen limit' as the 'edge of everything, we will remove that code too |
15:01 |
Shara |
I know there was an issue with things falling off maps before |
15:02 |
Shara |
Had thought about this myself |
15:02 |
Shara |
But auto-deletion of entities shuld surely only occur on a mapblock that has not been generated, regardless of current mapgen_limit |
15:02 |
IhrFussel |
Shara, that sounds like a good method...check if the block has been generated before removing the entity |
15:02 |
paramat |
i've done more work on the edge of the world than anyone, i suspect there is some silly code somewhere that needs fixing |
15:03 |
paramat |
when you reduce 'mapgen limit' the already-generated world outside remains visible and explorable, so it should remain fully functional too |
15:04 |
IhrFussel |
I agree, so would that check be easy to add to entity/object removal? |
15:04 |
Shara |
paramat: Sorry for adding to your workload (I know it's something I'm good at...) but would this be something you could take a look at? |
15:05 |
paramat |
i seem to remember entities can fall off into ignore, that is a problem, ignore is solid to players though, it should be solid for mobs too |
15:06 |
paramat |
you don't need to ask, it's something i was already intending to fix, but forgot =) |
15:06 |

15:13 |
Tenplus1 |
IhrFussel: mobs redo api has an altered version of lib_mount so it works a little easier with rotated mobs |
15:14 |
Tenplus1 |
what issue ? |
15:14 |
IhrFussel |
Sudden halting |
15:14 |

omg, that GNU yak has always been so annoying to me |
15:14 |
Tenplus1 |

Like when I'm on a horse and I accelerate it halts me .. same with cars and both seem to use code from lib_mount |
15:15 |
Tenplus1 |
oh so you are using lib/_mount and it's halting ?? |
15:16 |
IhrFussel |
I'm not sure if it's really linked to lib_mount yet...boats don't seem to have that halting issue and they don't use lib_mount |
15:16 |
Tenplus1 |
could be the inertia damage that causes issue, you can disable that I think |

IhrFussel |

15:19 |
Tenplus1 |
havent had time, waiting for download link for my distro |
15:19 |
paramat |
Megaf , for your game, a mod can force a core mapgen to be used, that works in 0.4.16 / 0.4.17 stable |
15:20 |
IhrFussel |
Tenplus1, I tried to set the stepheight to 2.1 to see if it that changes something and suddenly the cars didn't stop anymore but instead regularly seemed to drive over an invisible wall that's 2 nodes high o.o |
15:21 |
Tenplus1 |
erk... |
15:22 |
Tenplus1 |
sounds like the lib_mount part has been altered since last I looked, especially if it's glitching this easily |

check the example horse code for riding and maybe you could alter the vehicle to use mob api instead for testing, see if it has same issue |

tools do need a bit of work |

16:44 |

16:44 |

an anvil would be a handy node to place sword into and add more steel/diamond/ore to drepair it |

They have no value, you cant sharpen them, they dont last |
16:47 |
benrob0329 |
They're all the same |
16:47 |
rubenwardy |
having to do the danger zone and shrinking size would be annoying |
16:47 |
Tenplus1 |
this is why I like ToolRanks, it gives a tool stats and better wear the more you use it :D |
16:48 |
tumeninodes |
would possibly require vmanblechk |
16:48 |
benrob0329 |
Heck, even if you could sharpen it they're so cheap why bother? |
16:48 |
Tenplus1 |
once we can add buffs to tools they will become more important and worth repairing |
16:48 |
tumeninodes |
though a danger zone could maybe be done with damaging "air" |
16:49 |
Sokomine |
Tenplus1: take the anvil in my cottages mod :-) it does not require any additional material for repair. just punch the anvil with the tool in with the hammer |
16:50 |

Sokomine: You make quite an assumption there :D |
16:55 |
Tenplus1 |
do you have to manually HIT anvil with hammer ? |
16:56 |
Sokomine |
anyway...having to add one from the material used for the tool in order to do the repair might be acceptable. still...hitting the anvil multiple times is also fun. tools can last longer. they can be made more expensive without destroying gameplay |

17:00 |
Shara |
But unless anyone feels like helping me make everything, it won't happen any time soon |
17:00 |

the cost is in theory the hammer getting used. except that the hammer is relatively cheap and can be fixed the same way. so...yes, it's cheap. but it's also fun. and you have to carry hammer+anvil with you :-) |

18:10 |

Could physical = false be the reason??? |
18:11 |
Tenplus1 |
wait, the car entities arent physical = true ? |
18:11 |
IhrFussel |
They are, carts are not true |
18:12 |
Tenplus1 |
oh, carts get stuck easily going uphill if they are true, so false it is |
18:12 |
Tenplus1 |
they are controlled node by node so it's ok |
18:13 |
IhrFussel |
But I want to test if cars also don't stop anymore when I put physical = false |
18:13 |
Tenplus1 |
they may end up going through nodes and walls |
18:14 |
IhrFussel |
Just for testing...if that fixes it now then the problem is something about physical entities touching "solid" stuff |
18:15 |
Tenplus1 |
so long as stepheight = 1.1 then it should drive without stopping unless you go into a 2 high wall |

I will have to reinstall my system because I made the mistake of using blocks too large for Ext4 when creating the filesystem. Now I am running out of inodes all the time. So there we have it, a lesson. When installing Debian and using Ext FS and asked about FS type, between news, normal, largefile, do not chose largefile, never! For normal use and ok performance use normal, for max efficiency in storage size use news. |

Sokomine: the person logging in multiple players at once in my server from an IP address that is a VPS provider is noclipping through walls without moving their feet to try and generate as much map as they can |
21:33 |

after all they do have to deal with horrible controls |

Autorun is directly assisting with this |

jump is the least of android control problems, it's the other control issues that are the problem. we could add it as an option for all platforms |

paramat, i was getting ready to say that auto-jump might actually be a neat setting to have for desktop |

that's DUMB |

Jordach, what are you talking about? |

that throws any decent use away |

it's like the insecure api |

local HTTPApiTable = minetest.request_http_api() |

Sokomine, your movement is wayy smoother when you enable auto forward...the one by sallee was more like robotic (step, pause, step, pause) |
21:50 |
sofar |
Jordach: have a look at github.com/sofar/mt2fa |
21:52 |

Fussel, getitng multiple groups of players, 7 at once on RC doing this now |
21:53 |
IhrFussel |
Shara, Sokomine demonstrates auto forward and it's really a lot smoother... are they also moving in steps on your server? |
21:53 |
red-001 |
it would be kinda ironic if the keymap was so badly documented that however this is just rewrote it from scratch |
21:53 |
red-001 |
whoever* |
21:53 |
Sokomine |
IhrFussel: strange. well, that is how automove works. it's practical for travelling maybe 1-2 minutes (following other players who are showing something) but does require human interaction in order not to crash into a wall or fall into a hole |
21:57 |
red-001 |
not letting dead players move should really be enabled even if anticheat is off |

i really like the stock distribution of minetest/game, that's resulted from the work of so many people, and in particular paramat in regards to the code itself as well as managing the project and being so involved, and always sticking to his principles. just wanted to say thanks. |
