Hello guys...is it normal that my root server already uses swap even though the memory usage is below 15% ? |
13:34 |
Mr_Pardison |
depends on your swap setting. |
13:36 |
IhrFussel |
The swappiness is 60 |
13:38 |
IhrFussel |
Total RAM is 11 GB, in use 574 MB, cached 10 GB |
13:38 |
Mr_Pardison |
I'm not completely sure but that probably isn't normal. |
13:38 |
shivajiva |
that's a lot of cache |
13:39 |
nerzhul |
It's normal |
13:39 |
nerzhul |
if you server is a VM set vm.swappiness=10 |
13:39 |
nerzhul |
10GB cache means the OS has 10GB disk data in memory |
13:40 |
nerzhul |
it can be anything on disk, it depend on the recent usage, disk cache is always used and you should always have it else you will kill your disks :p |
13:41 |
shivajiva |
The disk cache will grow until you have no free memory left... |
13:41 |
shivajiva |
When you need more memory, some blocks will be evicted from the disk cache to make room. This eviction is controlled by a policy designed to maximize efficiency. E.g. "LRU": evict the Least Recently Used block. |
13:45 |
IhrFussel |
The only big file on my root server is map.sqlite ... all other files are mainly a few KBs |
13:46 |
nerzhul |
IhrFussel, anything can be in disk cache, binaries, logs ... |

So, I have a question about how to change the key that activates and deactivates the woodcutter mod function where it cuts down the tree. |
13:51 |
Mr_Pardison |
I'm trying to change it since the default key used is sneak and that is used for other stuff. |

I have isolated the areas that I need to change to lines 294-332 |

cache and buffers are good IhrFussel |

also, using swap is ok, it's just the kernel puting htere stuff that doesnt need to be in RAM |

As long as you don't have the streets_compatibility mod installed, there will be lots of similiar error messages. There is no need for worry, it's simply an unkown node. |
14:00 |
IhrFussel |
Is that an unknown node? I think the position has been added to those (not sure if that got backported to 0.4.17 though) |
14:01 |

Here is my swap line of free -m: Swap: 3899 4 3895 ... so why exactly is it using 4 MB swap when there is 10 GB memory available? |
14:01 |

It depends on what your server loads...a simple client with no mods just MTG should max require 50 MB RAM ... a lightweight server maybe 200, a more heavy one (like mine) 700-800 MB ... do you use LOTS of nodes on your server? Mine has 1,700 nodes |

I had this issue on CTF |
20:51 |
Shara |
Have seen the issue before |
20:52 |
Shara |
Problem is, you'd have falling nodes float on top of things you can't usually build on top of otherwise. |
20:52 |
Shara |
Which is also kind of bad |
20:52 |
Shara |
I actually had issues with my handholds mod because of this and had to work out a way around it |

rubenwardy |

But why does the "hit" node have to drop itself? |
20:53 |
Shara |
What else should happen to it? |
20:53 |
sfan5 |
IhrFussel: probably because it's not on the bugtracker |
20:53 |
sfan5 |
if they believe this to be a fairly important issue they should make sure the devs see it |
20:53 |
rubenwardy |
swear I made an issue about this |
20:53 |
Shara |
Either the existing node is replaced (so it's dropped or lost) or you let falling nodes float magically on top of things you can't usually build on |
20:54 |
Shara |
I never made an issue because I can't see a good solution |

Have the falling node cease to exist if the node it would occupy is protected and not air? |
20:55 |
rubenwardy |
maybe drop as item? |
20:55 |
Shara |
Hmm, maybe |
20:56 |
rubenwardy |
can a player make nodes in a protected area start falling? |
20:56 |
rubenwardy |
yes actually, if they dig beneath |
20:56 |
Shara |
I've only ever seen it used to grief twice in over two years on RC either way |
20:58 |
Shara |
But maybe the falling node dropping as an item would be best if the landing place is protected |
20:58 |
IhrFussel |
sfan5, that's why I posted it here...to inform you about its existence since I'm not the author |
20:58 |

Well, it's also fine to shut it down because you don't feel like it anymore, but of course it isn't so great for players |

Anyway, rubenwardy / sfan5: would dropping the falling node as an item if it lands somewhere protected be a solution you'd support? |
21:12 |
Megaf |
Mr_Pardison: wathing the first episode now, just amazing |
21:12 |
sfan5 |
Shara: it sucks if a player lets stuff fall in his own protected area but sure |
21:13 |
Shara |
obviously if it's your own area you should be able to drop it as a node |
21:13 |
Mr_Pardison |
griefers are the problem with that. |
21:13 |
Shara |
though then you get weird inconsistent behavior depending on who owns an area... but that could be okay for this perhaps? |
21:13 |
Shara |
Mr P, yea, a way to counter using falling nodes to grief from above an area is what we're talking about ;) |
21:14 |
Mr_Pardison |
I can definitely get behind that. |
21:17 |
IhrFussel |
There is still the general problem that you can make any node drop by letting a falling one fall on it ... that's what made my player light nodes drop before I changed them to invisible light sources |
21:18 |
IhrFussel |
That problem isn't just in protected areas... players can obtain nodes they shouldn't get normally |
21:18 |
Shara |
Make 'any' node drop? |
21:18 |
Shara |
How? |
21:19 |
IhrFussel |
If you let a san node fall on any other node (that's not buildable_to AFAIK) the hit node will drop |
21:19 |
IhrFussel |
sand* |
21:20 |
IhrFussel |
Let me recheck |
21:21 |
IhrFussel |
Okay...seems like the falling node needs to be a certain one (didn't work with sand) |
21:21 |
Shara |
Ys, so not any node. That soundsed kind of weird :P |
21:22 |
rubenwardy |
you can use that exploit on ctf flags, btw |
21:22 |
rubenwardy |
as I posted in the topic |
21:22 |
Mr_Pardison |
Shara seems to be having the same problem that Megaf and I were having earlier. |

21:24 |
* Mr_Pardison |

21:24 |
IhrFussel |
rubenwardy, do you know by any chance which nodes work for the dropping? I tried steelblock, meselamp and water sources so far |
21:24 |
Shara |
No. She's probably part rex though. |
21:25 |
rubenwardy |
? |
21:25 |
rubenwardy |
they need to be walkable = false |
21:25 |
rubenwardy |
so try ladders, plants, torches, etc |
21:28 |
IhrFussel |
Yep works with any rail |
21:29 |
IhrFussel |
Maybe we could make it so that if the hit node is walkable = false then drop the falling one instead? |
21:30 |
rubenwardy |
it shouldn't destroy the node if it's not diggable |
21:30 |
rubenwardy |
so it should check that it has at least one digging group |
21:30 |
IhrFussel |
But there is the group unbreakable too |
21:35 |
Megaf |
falling nodes shouldnt destroy nodes, period |
21:37 |
IhrFussel |
I think in most cases it would really make more sense to let the falling node drop instead of the hit one ... sounds more logical to me |
21:38 |
Megaf |
or just let the falling node stay on top of the node it has fallen on |
21:39 |
Megaf |
as it was placed there |
21:39 |
IhrFussel |
Megaf, that already happens but isn't possible when the hit node is walkable |

Any node with walkable = true (rails, ladders, torches etc) can be dropped when you let a falling node fall on it which is a very good way of griefing but enables more than that (obtain unbreakable nodes you should never get in the game) |
