hello! i've recently (in the last few months) encountered an issue in which my mt server with 97% uptime is not showing in the master server list. since i have not changed any settings the problem stumps me (it is possible my hosting provider changed something - i use digitalocean). can anyone tell me again what the requirements are for announcements to work correctly? i can successfully ping the server list from the server, so my out |
14:53 |
mars |
p.s. also, players are able to connect and play normally. it is only the announcement that is not working. |
14:55 |
sfan5 |
your domain (if any) needs to resolve and your server needs to respond to connections |
14:55 |
sfan5 |
note this also applies to ipv6 if you have configured it with your domain |
14:56 |
mars |
i have both ipv4 and ipv6 public addresses, however only ipv4 is enabled in the minetest.conf. the domain name does resolve (i can reach it from my home computer). |
14:56 |
sfan5 |
do you have ipv6 configured with your domain? |
14:57 |
|
Gael-de-Sailly joined #minetest |
14:59 |
mars |
i'n not sure actually. according to the digitalocean control panel, my server does have a public ipv6 address, however i have never been able to use it or test it, because my home isp doesn't support ipv6 out of the box yet |
14:59 |
mars |
so i've always relied on ipv4 |
14:59 |
sfan5 |
what's your domain? |
14:59 |
mars |
arklegacy.duckdns.org |
15:00 |
sfan5 |
no ipv6 on there |
15:00 |
sfan5 |
the "nslookup" tool might be able to check this if you're on windows |
15:00 |
mars |
ok. ipv4 should be working though. |
15:00 |
mars |
i am on linux |

from the server, i can ping the server list (ping and ping6 both work). |
15:06 |
mars |
i guess that means my outgoing connection works? |
15:06 |
sfan5 |
generally, yes |
15:08 |
sfan5 |
any easy way to fix this might be to just configure IPv6 with your domain, in the hopes that it will work |
15:10 |
mars |
i would have, but i can't test since my neighborhood isp isn't handling ipv6 yet |
15:11 |
mars |
could you try ping6 2604:a880:800:a1::e0:3001 ? |
15:11 |
sfan5 |
wrosk |
15:11 |
sfan5 |
works* |
15:11 |
mars |
that's the public ipv6 as stated by the DO control panel |
15:11 |
mars |
ok |
15:11 |
sfan5 |
with digitalocean you can generally expect ipv6 to work correctly out of the box |
15:12 |
sfan5 |
one more thing: if you decide to do this, make sure set ipv6_server = true in minetest.conf |
15:12 |
sfan5 |
(don't worry, people with ipv4 will still be able to connect) |
15:12 |
mars |
good to know |
15:13 |
mars |
i have bind_address = 138.197.78.5 in the conf, should i remove that? |
15:13 |
sfan5 |
yes |
15:18 |
mars |
rebooted the server with ipv6 enabled ... seems to work, i and another player have been able to connect |
15:18 |
mars |
checking my ip from within the game shows an ipv6 address |
15:19 |
mars |
(it used to only show ipv4 address for me) |
15:19 |
mars |
thanks a lot! at least that's 1 problem gone now :) |
15:20 |
sfan5 |
your domain still doesn't seem to have an IPv6, so this might just be a coincidence |
15:21 |
mars |
there's an apache server running there (port 80 i think), not sure how it is configured. |
15:22 |
sfan5 |
https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=a%3aarklegacy.duckdns.org this is what I mean |
15:27 |
mars |
i just realized my ip address as shown in-game is actually an ipv4 address but formatted to look like ipv6 (::ffff: in front of it). this is due to network translation i assume? |
15:28 |
sfan5 |
"network translation" is not the exact term, but yes |
15:32 |
mars |
hmmm, it is still not showing up in the server list. not sure how long it should take |
15:34 |
mars |
just found this in my debug.txt: servers.minetest.net/announce not found (HTTP response code said error) (response code 500) |
15:35 |
mars |
yep, it says that once a day, going back some months to when the problem started |
15:37 |
sfan5 |
there might be a single 500 when restarting the server |
15:40 |
mars |
oh, it tries again. do'h! so false alarm i guess |
15:42 |
mars |
the server's name is "Must Test" btw. it still doesn't show up, but i think this problem is beyond me ... |
