TenPlus1 |
hi folks |
14:41 |
TenPlus1 |
does anyone know HawyEye who's currently running the minecity server ??? |
14:54 |
TenPlus1 |
all it quiet in the minetest house, not even a whisper, or even a mouse ;P |

<Scout> TenPlus1: Yeah, I know HawkEye, do you need to get in touch with em? |
15:01 |
MTDiscord |
<Scout> erm, wait they left, how do I leave a message for em xD |
15:11 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> You don't, at least, I don't think you do from the Discord side. |
15:13 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> Also, wow, yeah, they actually disconnected ... who the heck actually does that? IRC really only works if you have a bouncer or something, and can stay always connected, otherwise what's the point of even asking questions when you have no way to get the responses? 🙄 |

<Scout> well darn lol |

<savilli> Some people use IRC from their mobile phones, where staying online is quite energy consuming |
18:49 |
Warr1024 |
Doing that directly without a bouncer doesn't sound sane. I use TheLounge as my client, which also handles the "bouncer" thing for me... |
19:19 |
MTDiscord |
<savilli> Doesn't it require to be installed on your server? |
19:20 |
Krock |
@savilli IRC is a godsend for prepaid SIM cards |
19:21 |
Krock |
chat for an hour, with less than 1 megabyte consumed |
19:23 |

also no: there's plenty of free BNC services out there. problem being that you basically share the account with them |
19:27 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> I mean, one option would be to have one "low security" account on a cloud bouncer, and then your own "high security" account that you connect directly for. Your bouncer account could still receive replies on your behalf |
19:27 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> though you'd have to tell people about that of course, like "let me know, or if I'm not around, tell TenPlus1Plus0, that's my other account" |

doesn't anyone nerdy enough to use IRC have a spare VPS lying around they can throw ZNC on though 🙃 |
19:36 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> contabo or netcup; a $5/mo VPS should be plenty to run a bouncer and a whole lotta other stuff. |
19:38 |
Krock |
that's enough for 1000 bouncers |
19:38 |
Krock |
(and a whole lotta other stuff.) |
19:39 |
MTDiscord |
<Scout> thats a lot of bouncers :o |
19:40 |
ROllerozxa |
indeed it's not particularily demanding, it can gladly coexist on a VPS that already hosts a couple websites and a minetest server |
19:41 |
ROllerozxa |
just be sure to get a VPS provider that allows you to control your rDNS for funny hostname |
19:51 |
MTDiscord |
<Warr1024> The real reason you might need your own VPS and can't just use a tiny fraction of somebody else's is really just liability: it's hard to find somebody with whom you have enough mutual trust to share a service like that. |
