I created an average lag mod...players can send /lag to see the average value for the last 60 seconds |
00:21 |
IhrFussel |
WAYYYYY more useful than the shitty max_lag |
00:38 |
IhrFussel |
Now I added a "critical" counter that increases if server step took longer than 0.5 secs |
00:46 |
IhrFussel |
If anybody's interested in the mod code let me know per !tell ... good night! |

Are there on_dig callbacks for tool registrations? I want to create obsidian tools (super strong, but super weak), but I don't think I can get the durability low enough. |
09:52 |
tenplus1 |
you can use the global on_dig functin to check for node and take more wear away |
09:52 |
tenplus1 |
*check for tool |
09:53 |
rdococ |
kay |
09:54 |
rdococ |
so do I have to get the digger's wielded item? |
09:54 |
tenplus1 |
yeah, and if "mymod:obsidian_tool" then do whatever you wanna do |
09:54 |
rdococ |
ah. |
09:55 |
tenplus1 |
of you could use the tool's after_use function |
09:55 |
tenplus1 |
to remove MORE wear |
09:55 |
rdococ |
ah |
09:55 |
rdococ |
what parameters does it have, though? |
09:55 |
tenplus1 |
after_use = function(itemstack, user, node) |
09:55 |
rdococ |
ty |
09:56 |
tenplus1 |
so itemstack:add_wear(whatever) ; return itemstack |
09:56 |
tenplus1 |
that way you control the wear level entirely :P |
09:56 |
rdococ |
yay! |
09:57 |
rdococ |
after_use seems to have another parameter (digparams) - so I've decided to take 5x the normal wear the node would give |
09:57 |
tenplus1 |
oops, missed that one :D |
09:58 |
rdococ |
Wow, that wore out quick O_o |
09:58 |
tenplus1 |
eheheheh |
09:59 |
rdococ |
I could only dig 11 nodes :P |
09:59 |
tenplus1 |
super strong but very low durability :) hah |
09:59 |
rdococ |
(in this case, default:stone) |
09:59 |
rdococ |
wow, currently the obsidian sword deals 10 points of damage |
10:00 |
rdococ |
that can kill an entity in two hits |
10:00 |
rdococ |
(that is, if the entity's a player) |
10:02 |
tenplus1 |
I kinda wish the minetest engine itself had the ability to change a tool's metadata to alter it's speed/uses/drops etc |
10:03 |
rdococ |
that would be cool |
10:04 |
rdococ |
(I guess for now you can swap out the tools for different tools, though) |
10:04 |
tenplus1 |
toolranks mod is good for that juyst now with it's level support, making tools last longer |
10:04 |
rdococ |
I'd like a set of gold tools which would be slow, but last a long time. |
10:07 |
tenplus1 |
hrm, on mc it's the other way around... goold digs fast and has low durability |
10:12 |
rdococ |
minecraft is weird. |
10:12 |
rdococ |
it has obsidian that's durable, and gold that digs fast |
10:12 |
rdococ |
it's like having a super hard and tough pillow vs a super soft rock |
10:12 |
tenplus1 |
ehe yeah... yogscast has a series called "Ozone" where the lag is terrible and thast's on an amazing spec system with 8gb memory running only minecraft |
10:13 |
rdococ |
were there any mods? |
10:13 |
tenplus1 |
oh yes, full modpack for the "Ozone" subgame |
10:16 |
rdococ |
hah, minecraft has a subgame :P |
10:17 |
rdococ |
(ha ha! minecraft needs patching for mods :P) |
10:17 |
tenplus1 |
yeah, many ppl seem to make adventure, challenge games with a list of what to accomplish :D |
10:17 |
rdococ |
minecraft seems to be more survival-oriented than minetest, which is fine by me |
10:17 |

although I would like to see an engaging minetest survival subgame |

10:47 |

Also means you're not testing your code before adding to server |

true... dangerous... also what if something breaks, hope you have backups |
10:48 |
rdococ |
what if someone steals one of your ssh devices? |
10:48 |
IhrFussel |
That is right Shara, I test my code live in production and usually am able to fix crashes fast |
10:49 |
Shara |
Still means more disruption for the server. |
10:49 |
Shara |
Players want a stable server that never crashes to begin with |
10:50 |
IhrFussel |
I think my server runs extremely stable: The server has been online 99.7800 % of the time (1162.2374 / 1164.826 hours) |
10:51 |

You wnat minetesthosting servers with 4 players max and all default mods to get their time at the top? |
11:18 |
Shara |
want* |
11:19 |
tenplus1 |
how about sorting by uptime, lag and player average ? |
11:21 |
IhrFussel |
Shara, almost all minetesthosting.com servers are at the very bottom, they don't even count as "active" right now |
11:22 |
IhrFussel |
Mainly cause they only allow 4 players which means even IF such a server is full the score it gets will be low |
11:22 |
Shara |
Fussel, that is an example only. |
11:23 |
IhrFussel |
Shara, let me rephrase it: Active servers that meet certain requirements (player count, average count, uptime, lag) should be rotated so that each of them can have a healthy userbase |

I just think in terms of what new players are likely to experience |
11:25 |
tenplus1 |
important sorting points about servers are 1. stability (uptime) 2. ping time (lag) and 3. players (average) |
11:26 |

Raven262: I made ethereal saplings biome specific so they had to grow on it's own soil, but... you can use the built-in bonemeal or even bonemeal mod itself to fast-grow saplings on any dirt with any light level... |
11:36 |
Shara |
I don't really care howw professional it "looks", since I can just tidy it up if I want to use it :) |

11:37 |
Shara |
Awesome thanks. Any specific license if I do work it into something? |
11:37 |

whne entering a protected area. so players don't stuck in rotation loop |
11:37 |
tenplus1 |
I *could* add a globalstep feature to check every 1 second or so which area you are inside and show information, yes |
11:38 |
CWz |
cool. some players complained about the lack of it. |
11:39 |
Shara |
tenplus1: I'd like that too |
11:40 |
Shara |
It's somethign from areas mod I really miss when using protectors |
11:40 |
Shara |
something* |
11:40 |
CWz |
is it still not a good idea to have protector mod with areas |
11:40 |
CWz |
the landrash mod has it |
11:40 |
tenplus1 |
only reason I havent added it is because I'd need to do a find in area search for closest protector and extract information per step... was just htinking of lagg on each player |
11:41 |
Shara |
CWz: I'm not talking about using them together |
11:41 |
Shara |
I do have both mods on DL, but areas mod use is limited to admins only for filling in problem gaps between protectors |
11:42 |
Shara |
(for example: if I fixed grief in a place 10+ times already, then it needs something) |
11:42 |
CWz |
i know, question was unrelated |
11:43 |
Shara |
And until protectors mod allows some kind of general admin protector node that can be dropped anywhere, I'm kinda stuck |
11:43 |
CWz |
Hmm worldedit |
11:43 |
Shara |
How does WE connect? |
11:45 |
tenplus1 |
we ? |
11:45 |

worldedit |

Hmmm |
11:47 |
ThomasMonroe |
hi ten |
11:47 |
CWz |
we need 6 more tenplus1s |
11:48 |
Shara |
I will try that sometime, but I don't give WE out to most of the team anyway |
11:48 |
Shara |
And I'm not sure what happens when you force protection to overlap... |
11:48 |
tenplus1 |
if you place a protector using worldedit it wont work |
11:48 |
tenplus1 |
it'll have no metadata for owner |
11:49 |
CWz |
hmm seemed to work for me |
11:49 |
Shara |
I'd like an admin protector... can place anywhere but doesn't prevent people who already placed protectors from building |
11:50 |
tenplus1 |
too many checks to do that |
11:50 |
Shara |
pity |
11:50 |
tenplus1 |
if WE places protector then only admin can remove it |
11:50 |
Shara |
special admin protector node would fix the biggest problem the mod has |
11:51 |
tenplus1 |
gaps ? |
11:51 |
Shara |
yup |
11:51 |
tenplus1 |
that's up to the player to place them in such a way to cover the area needed |
11:51 |
CWz |
true |
11:51 |
Shara |
And then you get gaps between buildings in cities that no one can protect |
11:52 |
tenplus1 |
the tree and food farms at spawn in Xanadu are done in such a way that players can take/replant but not damage surrounging |
11:52 |
Shara |
That's pushing hassle onto players/admins for bad mod design, and really, you can't expect all players to work together to handle it perfectly |
11:53 |
Shara |
I have several areas around DL spawn that get actively griefed over and over (or did until I added areas as well) |
11:53 |
Shara |
Paths between buildings were gettng dug up so players could steal the materials and so on |
11:53 |
CWz |
i think rnd has similar mod to protectors which fixes the gap issue by having the protectors be placed in a fixed grid |
11:54 |
tenplus1 |
o.O bad mod design.... *ahem* |
11:54 |
Shara |
CWz: problem then is it can interfere with building design as well |
11:54 |
Shara |
tenplus1: I love the mod, or I wouldn't use it, but it's a real problem |
11:55 |
tenplus1 |
yeah CWz, he uses map meta to write protector into upper node or something to handle map blocks |
11:55 |
tenplus1 |
if I'm thinking of correct mod |
11:56 |
tenplus1 |
protector redo is made to be easy to use, but does require some planning to cover/protect large areas... hence the protector tool that evenly spaces things out |
11:56 |
CWz |
i believe this is the one rnd showed me: https://github.com/ac-minetest/basic_protect |
11:56 |
Shara |
One single person can always plan... but when two players' building areas spread and meet up, you get a gap |
11:57 |
Shara |
Then players want to connect things with roads... but no one can protect the gap |
11:57 |
tenplus1 |
gaps can be covered easily with protector placement |
11:58 |
tenplus1 |
if it's say a 4-wide area missed out then a specifically placed protector underground can cover that aera |
11:58 |
Shara |
I've seen pletnty of situations where it is impossible |
11:59 |
Shara |
plenty* |
12:00 |
Shara |
If you have a 4x4 gap between different people's protections, there is often no way to place a protector where it wouldn't overlap with someone else's |
12:00 |
CWz |
i think areas mod also seems to have protect block on ve's servers |
12:02 |
tenplus1 |
doesnt krock have a simple protection mod that works using map blocks ? |
12:02 |
tenplus1 |
my only quam with areas and the like is it has to save a list of protected areas which can be easily corrupted |
12:03 |
Shara |

My potions mod will have a "potion" attribute per player that holds a serialized table that maps each effect name to the server time at which the effect was given. If one drinks two of the same potions, the time will be reset. |

16:40 |
IhrFussel |
It is no subgame, I edited the files manually ... it is actually almost impossible to have a level system as a standalone mod but still integrate it into many other mods |
16:41 |

For example: You get EXP from monsters but the level code also needs code from the monsters code...they cannot depend on each other (MT disallows this) |

Grandolf, A level system is really easy now with extended player attributes...back when I created the level system that wasn't a thing yet so I use files to store the EXP ... all you really need is player:get_attribute("exp:exp") then you add whatever EXP the player received and player:set_attribute("exp:exp",newexp) ... now you simply add EXP for certain callbacks like on_dignode() on_craft() etc |
17:01 |
rdococ |
it has to include the mod name? |
17:01 |
IhrFussel |
I do it like that to prevent conflicts |
17:02 |
Grandolf |
use :exp:exp then :P |
17:02 |
rdococ |
ah |
17:03 |
rdococ |
so I can now create and suggest a mod to be installed on the server, and then... rdococ:set_attribute("exp:exp", math.huge) :P |
17:03 |
rdococ |
jk |
17:03 |

For the level definition you simply crate a function that looks kinda like this: if exp > 100 then level = 2 end if exp > 300 then level = 3 end etc etc... then you compare the old level to the new level and if it's higher BAM level up |
17:04 |
rdococ |
ha ha, you don't use a table lookup :P |
17:04 |
rdococ |
it'd be better to have a table which maps level to exp required |
17:04 |
rdococ |
{0, 100, 300, etc.} |
17:04 |
Grandolf |
youve got unknowns at -3488,4.5,-2843 IhrFussel, they are from the castle mod |
17:05 |
rdococ |
and then, if exp > lookup[level] then level = level + 1 end |
17:05 |
rdococ |
or if you want to make sure no level gets skipped, "while exp > lookup[level] then level = level + 1 end" |
17:05 |
IhrFussel |
Yes I know cause I updated that mod sometime in the past and it changed some names |

17:06 |

isnt it possible to do something like oldmod:name=newmod:name ? |
17:06 |
Grandolf |
yes |
17:07 |
IhrFussel |
With 160 mods on your server you CANNOT manage all of them ... plus I also work on non-mod code and I work on mod ideas I didn't finish yet |
17:07 |

thats what moderators r 4 :) |

Grandolf |
its possible to set up a live file that is able to be managed from several pc's with sshfs i think |
17:09 |
IhrFussel |
I don't want others to edit my files...I am a bit egoistic in that case, but it also makes managing easier when I exactly know what I did |

tenplus1, update regarding my mobile network provider: There was a tech problem and they gave me credit back now and activated my tariff |
18:10 |
tenplus1 |
glad to hear... all working now ? |
18:11 |

They told me to wait another hour before I use it...just to be safe |
18:13 |
tenplus1 |
the countdown begins :D |
18:15 |
IhrFussel |
They said I waited a little too long...usually you have 48 hours to recharge your account and extend the tariff BUT when the 48 hours are over you get a text message about it...I recharged RIGHT before the text message was sent they told me so the system was confused |
